2 NCGA ANNUAL REPORT

REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT

I’m pleased to report that the state of the Northern California Golf Association is strong…and growing stronger.

Our collaboration with the Women’s Golf Association of Northern California (WGANC) and the Pacific Women’s Golf Association (PWGA) has already resolved a number of outstanding issues and it is my hope that the remaining concerns can be addressed in time for a vote on unification in 2019. I believe our work, as a collaborative team, has allowed the NCGA to learn more about the needs and desires of the members of the WGANC and the PWGA, and likewise, they have learned more about how the NCGA functions through membership on some of our committees and participation with several of our Board meetings. Unification doesn’t mean abandonment of any of the history and traditions of the WGANC and the PWGA—I truly believe we will enhance that history and tradition, and build exciting, new traditions for the future.

With the solid work of Kristen Nostrand and our Growth Committee, we have achieved an impressive resurgence of new memberships in our organization. This, at a time, when golf was being written off as a dying sport. Thanks to all of you for your skill and innovation in bringing the game to all golfers in Northern California.

Kristen also deserves thanks for her efforts in creating a new innovative veterans program within the NCGA. Under her leadership, we have created new veteran’s associate clubs, a new veteran’s NCGA card, a new site being constructed for use by veteran’s organizations to post their tournaments and, ultimately, a Veteran’s Cup tournament. Thanks for all of the hard work by you and your team.

The “Ryans”, Ryan Gregg and Ryan Farb, have embarked on an even more ambitious tournament schedule for 2018—more than 550 days are scheduled. On top of all of that, the new 2019 Rules are going into effect on January 1, and the entire crew of Rules gurus have been holding seminars and on-site classes to bring everyone up to date on the new Rules of Golf. Well done all!

Lest we forget, The USGA Girls’ Junior Championship was held at Poppy Hills this past July to rave reviews from the players, their parents and the USGA. Despite the fog delays, our volunteers made the event an event to remember for a lifetime. Thank you volunteers for your tireless efforts on behalf of tournament golf!

Our Handicap and Course Rating committee, led by Jim Cowan, has been working diligently with members of both the NCGA, the WGANC and the PWGA to incorporate the course rating system to efficiently rate courses for both men and women golfers. All involved have said that the process is working well, and the collaboration has become a hallmark of cooperation. Thanks to Jim and his team!

REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT

Financially, the NCGA is strong due to the efforts of our Finance committee and our very own Aana Fitzgerald and her team. They do all of our budgets, track expenditures, and file all of the necessary paperwork needed by the business so that the rest of us can concentrate on golf issues. Thank you to you and your team Aana!

You can’t function without IT, and we’ve got it! Lenny Fudenna and his staff really make the organization run, and run efficiently. From communications, to website development, to maintenance of the systems, Lenny’s team is the best.

Youth on Course. After nine years, this will be my final year on this excellent program, and I will miss it. Adam Heieck, the leader of this program, never ceases to amaze me. From a modest beginning to a national program, every month seems to bring news of yet another state addition to the Youth on Course family. Allowing kids to play golf for $5 or less at great golf courses makes golf accessible, plus scholarships and caddy programs, makes this an effort worth supporting by anyone who loves golf—or just loves to help kids.

I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge the effort and the support of Joe Huston, NCGA CEO, who makes all of this possible. Joe is a business man, a great golfer in his own right and a passionate believer in the game. Without his help, given some of my challenges this year, I simply could not have made it to this point. Thank you Joe, for your help, your kindness and your friendship. Finally, Malinda Oliver, better known as “Mo”, is irreplaceable. She makes sure everyone’s written material is in on time, organizes everything for everybody, is gracious despite my constant foibles and makes sure that all of the trains are running on time. She is kind and resourceful. And she makes sure there’s always candy at the meetings. Thank you Mo, from the bottom of my heart.

I’ve been proud to wear the “Blue Jacket” for the past nine years. Not because of how it looks, but what it signifies. It means history and tradition. It means adherence to the rules. It means we all stand for something more important than ourselves. And it means we will continuously make changes to make the golf an ever better game, and more accessible for all. Thank you for the honor and privilege of wearing the “Blue Jacket”. It has meant more to me than you’ll ever know.

Respectfully submitted,

Tom BoneNCGA President

POPPY HOLDING

Poppy Hills

One of the highlights of 2018 at Poppy Hills was the hosting of our first national championship, the U.S. Girls Junior Championship. The event received rave reviews from players and parents and the course was in fantastic condition. The field was highlighted with the top junior girls golfers from all over the world, including some of Northern California’s own like Lucy Li of Redwood Shores, who shot a women’s course record 9-under-par 62, and the event’s champion Yealimi Noh of Concord.

The NCGA membership really noticed the great course conditions and seemed to truly enjoy the experience, either as part of 60+ NCGA competitive events, the 220+ club events or just a foursome with friends. We reached nearly 47,000 total rounds, up more than 2% from last year. It is also interesting to note the average member is driving almost two hours, making Poppy Hills a true home course for all NCGA members, not just those in the Monterey area.

Our support of Youth on Course continues to grow with an expanded caddy program. A total of 246 loops were made by YOC caddies this summer, by far those most in Northern California. We also hosted more than 600 rounds of junior golf at $5, while offering complimentary practice facilities for all YOC members.

The Champions Tour made its annual visit with the PURE Insurance Championship and we attracted some of the game’s top names, including Vijay Singh, Bernhard Langer and Scott McCarron. All professionals were very complimentary of the course and conditioning.

POPPY HOLDING

Poppy Ridge

One of the top priorities for Poppy Ridge in 2018 was maintaining tournament quality course condi-tions for players year-round, and we saw those efforts reflected in the increased total rounds from last year, now up to nearly 57,000 rounds.

Ridge continues to offer NCGA members one of the best golf values in Northern California in a location easily accessible from nearly all of Northern California’s most populated areas. Ridge continues to be a major supporter of NCGA events, hosting Members at 15 tournaments including JTNC, Weekend Net Tour and NCGA Championships.

As always, a large focus has been on balancing nontraditional food and beverage business with the golf experience. As the clubhouse continues to be utilized as a banquet and wedding venue, our procedures and processes have improved to provide our NCGA members with the best experience possible while utilizing the building to maximize revenues.
