Anewlook,arenewedpassion
Inour12thyearofopera^on,TurningLeaf(Inc.)hasexperiencedmany exci^ng changes within the organiza^on. As somemayhave witnessed, parts of this service appear different: newwebsite,addi^onalspecial^esinourstaffteam,newpromo^onalmaterials,andaheightenedsocialmediapresence.
Turning Leaf (Inc.) receives its oversight from generous,hardworkingmembersofourBoardofDirectors. Themassiveimpact this service has had on the lives of vulnerable andmarginalized people is in part due to the governance,accountabilityandguidanceof these investedvolunteers. It iswith deepest gra^tude thatwe acknowledge the departure ofseveralmembersfromtheBoard:SusanBrazil-Smith,PaulNyhof,and Steven Fitzpatrick. Their contribu^ons will have a las^ngeffectonouropera^onsandculture.Inaddi^on,newmembersGeorgePasieka,FemiOrigundeandRuthKresnyakwill joinourcurrent Board (Raj Perumal, JoeMacek, Todd Nadeau) to ourBoard of Directors and look forward to the exci^ng new yearahead.

SELKIRK
Since2010,TurningLeafhasbeenapresenceintheSelkirkcommunity.Thoughwestartedwithone3–bedroomtownhouse,servingadultswithdualdiagnosis,todayTurningLeafSelkirkoperates6adjoinedtownhouses(our first ever “cluster” model). This unique model serves as ourResiden^alProgramflagshipandhashelpeddozensofpeoplestrugglingwithsevereaddic^on,conflictwiththelawandmentalillness.
WINNIPEG
TurningLeaf’sfirstCFSTransi^onalHome(HendersonHouse)celebrated 1 year anniversary in August 2017. This servicetreats and protect 3 high risk young women from sexualexploita^onandsubstanceabuse.
WinnipegisalsohometomanyResiden^altreatmenthomesforthosestrugglingwithsevereaddic^ons(“HarmReduc^onUnits”),conflictwiththelawandforwomenatriskofsexualexploita^on(“WomenatRiskUnit”).
PORTAGELAPRAIRIE
March15th,2017markedthecomple^onofconstruc^onforanewmul^-unitresiden^altreatmenthome.Withcapacitytoprovidetreatmentandhousingto7par^cipants,thishomewasdesignedwithtwosinglebedapartmentsaiachedtoa5-bedresidence.Thisinten^onaldesignallowsforpar^cipantstograduatetolesssupervisedsepngsoncetheyacquirelifeskillsnecessaryforindependentliving.Thishomeisalsouniquelyequippedtoworkwiththoselivingwithintellectualchallenge(e.g.,FASD)whileinconflictwiththelaw.Thetrainedteamworkdiligentlywiththepar^cipantstochangetheirbehavior,healfromtraumaandreunitewithfamily.
Aqerdecadesofsolventandalcoholabusebecauseofthetraumaheexperiencedasayouth,“Danny”celebratedonefullyearofsobrietyattheSelkirkCluster.
“Annie”fromHendersonHousehascelebrated4weeksofstabilityfollowinga
verydifficultstrugglewithmentalillness.Hercommitmenttoherhealthispromp^ngthepoten^alforreunifica^onwithfamily(thegoalforherwhenshemovedtoTurning
Leaf).
“Manny,StacyandDarren”haveallcompletedtherequiredhoursfromtheFineOp^onProgramandhavebeendoingsowellwithmee^ngProba^onrequirementsthattheyhavereceivedfree-^meinthecommunity!Notonlyhas“Darren”completedproba^on,hefoundemployment!Allthreehavehadnore-involvementwiththelegalsystemwhilelivingintheTurningLeafhome!

HABKIRKHOUSE(REGINA)
HabkirkHousewasTurningLeafSaskatchewan’sfirstservice!Designedtobetheprovince’sfirstTransi^onalService(whereyouthtransi^onintoadultsystemfromCFSwithouthavingtomovehomeswhentheyturn18yearsofage),thistreatmenthousehasclearlybecomeahomeforthe4youngwomenwholivethere.Anotherexampleastohowaservicecanbetailoredtomeettheneedsofthepar^cipants.
“Brynne”cametoHabkirkHouseasa
youngwomanstrugglingwithmentalillnessandintellectualchallenge.Herstruggledeeplyimpactedherrela^onshipwithherfamily.However,inrecentmonths,Brynnehasmetwithmassivesuccess:herrela^onshipwithherfamilyhasmendedandshehastransi^onedintoherownindependentlivingapartment.HabkirkHouseprovidedherwiththesecureandtrus^ngrela^onshipssheneededtoengageintreatmentforherexperiencesoftraumaandacquiretheday-to-dayskillssheneededtoliveindependently(e.g.,cooking,cleaning,banking,managingstress,makingfriends,etc.).
TheHabkirkHousehassuccessfullytakenallfouryounggirlsthroughthetransi^onintoadultserviceswithgreatsuccess!

HabkirkstaffteamwerethefirstinSaskatchewanhistorytobetrainedtoperformperitonealhomedialysisforMary,whoisexperiencingrenalkidneyfailure.Typicallyperformedinhospitalorbyfamilymembers,theHabkirkteammadeitpossibleforMarytostayhomeforthistreatmentinsteadofgoingtohospitaldaily.ThisteamwentthisextramiletoensureMaryreceivedthequalityoflifeshedeserves.

Onahill,onthesouthernoutskirtsofMooseJaw,sitsafour-plexservingashometoasmanyas5intellectuallychallengedadults.ReferredtoastheTrinityApartmentComplex,thisuniquehousingmodelallowsforthepar^cipantstoresideintheirindividualizedapartmentswithoneapartment,onsite,staffed24hours/day.Thisonsitestaffedapartmentallowspar^cipantstoliveindependentlywithaccesstohelpfromtrainedstaffany^metheyneedit.Itishere,withinthisTurningLeafMooseJawcommunity,thatpeoplelike“Trevor”and“Roy”canleavebehindthe“old”lifestyleofconflic^ngwiththelawandadoptthe“new”lifestyle:therapy,medica^on,safedecisionsandmembershipinacommunity.
GUIDEDLIVING
Analterna^vetotradi^onalgrouphomeliving,GuidedLivingmatchesfamiliestopar^cipants,allowingformentorshipandfriendshiptooccurinahome-environment.Thestrengthofthismodelistherolemodelling–theguidedliving–theTurningLeafteammemberprovidesthepar^cipant.Theseguidedlivingscenariosfosterthedevelopmentofskillssuchasmoneymanagement,cooking,menuplanning,laundry,homecleanlinessandthedevelopmentofappropriateandposi^verecrea^onalhabits.

OnNov.20th,2016,Winnipeg’sMetropolitanEntertainmentCentreservedashosttoaninnova^vefundraisingevent:TurningLeaf’sAnnualManitoba
LiileBigShots.Hundredsoffriends,familyandsupportersfilledthisbeau^fulvenuetowatchdozensofyoungdancers,mar^alar^sts,singers,jugglers,andmusicians.AnannualeventservingasManitoba’sexclusiveamateurtalentshowforyouth,thisunconven^onalfundraisingopportunityallowsustoreachpoten^alnewsupportersthroughsponsorshipopportuni^es,connectwithourtargetmarketoffamilieswithdisposableincome,andreachouttopoten^alvolunteers.ThenextManitobaLiileBigShotsonOctober22,2017promisestobeevenmorespectacular!

DONATIONS:GIFT-IN-KINDAnimportantcomponentofTurningLeafisthesupportwereceivefromfriends,familiesandcommunitymembers,includinglocalbusinesses!Lastyear,supportersofTurningLeafprovided$69,995.00inproductandservicestoouragency.Thisradicallyoff-setopera^onalcostsandmetthemanyneedsourpar^cipantshaveincluding:food,clothing,medicalservices,hygieneitemsandmore.
REGINA’SNEWCLUSTERAPARTMENTS!
Since2015,TurningLeafhasbeenapresenceinSaskatchewan.In2016,TurningLeafopenedRegina’sfirstClusterApartment.Thisuniquecommunallivingexperience(wherepar^cipantsresideinneighboringapartmentswhileastaffteamoccupy/provideservicesoutoftheirownapartment)allowsforsupporttobegivenwhen
andhowit’sneededtothe4intellectuallychallengedadultsstrugglingwithmentalillness.Thissupportedlivingarrangementallowedfor“Steven”toliveindependentlyincludingcleanhisapartment,makehisownmeals,andinvitehisproudgrandmotheroverforsupper.
WINNIPEG’SNEWCLUSTERAPARTMENTS:EDISONANDSHERBROOKE!
Thiswasaperfectmodelfor“Candace”whohadpreviouslyresidedattheCFShousewithTurningLeaf.TheCFShouseworkedtostabilizethisyoungwomanthroughaperiodofintensere-vic^miza^onandsexualexploita^on.Tragically,Candacewasoqentargetedfor'traphouses'(gangcontrolledloca^onswhereaddicted,vulnerableyouthwenttousenarco^csandwere“trapped”/forcedtostayun^ltheyengagedinsextradetobereleased).Assheturnedageofmajority,Candaceneededadifferentsepngwithdifferentsupportsdesignedtomeetheruniquehigh-riskneeds.However,shewasnotamenabletothe24-hourmodel.OncetheSherbrookeClusteropened,Candace’sclose-knittreatmentteamstronglyadvocatedforhertolivethere.Shecurrentlylivesinthissafehousing,receivesmedicaFon,medicalcareandcounselling,hashands-ontrainingformealprepara^onandlaundryandishealingatherownpace.

CLINICALTurningLeafisexcitedtoannouncetheaddi^onofElderLindatoourhelpingcommunity.ShebringsadeepTradi^onalspiritualitytotreatmentandsupportofourmarginalizedandvulnerablepar^cipants.Whenshe’snotvisi^ngwithpar^cipantsone-on-one,ElderLindacanbefoundconsul^ngwithourclinicalcasemanagers,helpingtheminformtheirtreatmentofpeopleincrisiswithtradi^onalprinciples,valuesandteachings.Welookforwardtotheupcomingyearwhenthosewhodesireitcanpar^cipateinsmudges,sweats,prayers,counseling,andsweetgrassceremonies.AstheclinicalprocessinformsallpartsofTurningLeaf,ourClinicalPsychologistsarethehubofallprogrammingandarerou^nelyconsultedbyClinicalcasemanagersandtheirteams.Thisyear,weareexcitedtobringEllerbyandAssociatesonboardforclinicalconsulta^on,assessments,therapyandmentorshipofourtreatmentteams.InTurningLeafSaskatchewan,ClinicianAndreaMcKay(Psych.Provisional)providescoretherapeu^candconsulta^onservicestoReginaandMooseJawtreatmentteams.Priortomee^ngwithMs.McKay,“Jeff”residedinanins^tu^onalsepngwherehewasgivenmedica^on(e.g.,PRN)every^mehismoodschanged,heexperienceddarkeremo^ons(grief,anger,frustra^on)andescalated.Hertherapeu^cconnec^onwith“Jeff”hashelpedhimdevelopthecri^calinternalcopingstrategiesandemo^onalregula^onskillsneededtolivesafelyinhisneighborhood.

Originallystartedtoserve5intellectuallychallengedmeninconflictwiththelawbeingdischargedfromotherorganiza^onsbecauseoftheirpast,TurningLeaf’sDayServicecon^nuestodowhatithasalwaysdone:serveasanalterna^vedrop-incommunitysepngforthoselivingwithintellectualchallengeandmentalillnessthatwouldotherwise“fallthroughthegaps.”Itisherethatpar^cipantscomeMondaythroughFriday,acquirelifeandemploymentskills,par^cipateinleisureandvolunteerac^vi^esandtransi^onintosupportedemploymentdesignedjustforthem,whenthey’reready.Withtwoloca^ons(DayServiceMarionandDayServicePortageAvenue),thisrecrea^onal/educa^onalservicenowoffersadona^onbank,laundryservices,afullkitchenformealprepara^onandcookingtrainingopportuni^es.Ourhopefortheupcomingyearistoofferaclassforinternalandexternalindividualstocomeforclasses.

MeetJasmine:Jasmine,whowasoLenviolenttowardsstaffwhentheytriedtohelpher,hadalonghistoryoftraumaandacompletedisconnectfromherfamilyoforiginwhenshemetElderLinda.ThroughtheElderrelaFonship,Jasminehasachievedstability.Sherecentlyhadherspiritanimalandnamingceremony.
Jasmine’sconnecFonwiththeElderhasaidedherinaddressingherexperiencesoftraumaandrepairingrelaFonships,puSngherbackonapathofhealing.

OnJuly5th,2017TurningLeafhadthepleasureofhos^ngthe5thAnnualTurningLeafGamesattheUniversityofManitobaStadium.Wewelcomedover150par^cipantsfrommanyfantas^cagenciesshowcasedtheirskillcompe^ngineventssuchaslongjump,shotput,soccerkick,100-metredash,and400-metredash.WebeattheheatwithwaterboilesgenerouslydonatedbyWorldofWater,andFreezePopsdonatedbySobey’sUnicity.WewerealsoluckyenoughtowelcomeKellyParkerfrom94.3TheDrivewhobroadcastedtheeventliveonloca^on.Thedaywasahugesuccessforeveryoneinvolved,andwecan’twaittoseewhatnextyear’sgameswillbring!
INTAKEDEPARTMENT
IntakeCoordinatorMelisaFalkandherteamarethefirstpointofcontactforfamiliesandadvocatesofpeoplefallingthroughgapsinoursystem.Since2016,MelissahasensuredTurningLeafremainshighlyresponsiveforourprovincialpartnersandhur^ngfamiliesinneed.Here’ssomeexamples:
• 83newpar^cipantshaveacquiredfundingandstartedservicewithTurningLeaf!• 29par^cipantsprocessedandwai^ngtobeapprovedbyProvincialfunders• Intakeiscurrentlyworkingtheirwaythroughawai^nglistof40people.• Over150generalcallerscalledbackandgivenguidancetonavigatethesystemorresources–
that’sanaverageof3.5callershelpedaday!• AndthankstoMelissaandherteam,4%ofallprobonoreferralshadtheirfundingstatuschange
from“Ineligible”to“eligible”andnowhavethefundingtheyneedtostaysafe,liveindependentlyandbehappyinourcommunity.

TRAININGPROGRAM
OurtrainingdepartmentbecameformalizedinMay2016.Implementa^onofformalizedrecordkeeping,anonlinetrainingcalendarandbringingmoreeduca^onalopportuni^estotheemployeesaresomeofthemajorachievementsoverthisinauguralyearofthedepartment.Weareexcitedtonowoffermanyin-housetrainings,includingASIST(AppliedSuicideInterven^onSkillsTraining)andGuidetotheVulnerablePersons Act (VPA). Trainings are evaluated on-going,which includes a component of a “wish to learnabout”.Thispiecespeakstotheemployeebody“WishList”foropportuni^estheyarecuriousabout,thatcouldhelpthemintheirdailyworkinsuppor^ngpar^cipantsandintheirownprofessionaldevelopment.

Asaresultoftheirsugges^ons,weareexcitedtobring “Time Management”, “PTSD Awareness”and“Naviga^ngSystems”inFall2017.Bywayofcrea^ng and redeveloping parts of thedepartment,weareabletofosterouremployeeson-goingandhopefullyincreasingtheirawareness,theirconfidenceandtheirprofessionaldevelopment.Indevelopingandonlinetrainingcalendar,staffareabletoseeataglancewhatopportuni^esareavailabletothemandwhen,andcanscheduleaccordingly.Thisbenefitsboththeirworkschedule,butalsoreducesimpactonpar^cipantsupport.In2018,weareexcitedtofurtherourinclusion,andmobilizethedepartmentintooursatelliteregionstomakingtrainingmoreaiainableforall.
VOLUNTEERPROGRAM
WeopenedourdoorstovolunteersinJuly2016,withmuchan^cipa^onforwhatthistypeofcollabora^oncouldmeanforourcommunity.Inourfirstyear,wewereabletoairact26individualvolunteers,aswellas 3 Group volunteers. Individual volunteers are community members wan^ng to help, while groupvolunteersarecorporate,oralargegroupofpeoplewhowanttocommitoneeventata^me.Gratefully,we’vehadover1700+hoursworkedwhichequatestoappx$35,000inemployeewages.Thisisexci^ngas it suggests that services areenhanced; front line staff canmanage the supportsweprovide,whilevolunteers manage behind-the-scenes coordina^on of our services. We don’t know how we workedwithoutthem!

Volunteersareanasset,especiallyinhelpinguswithourcommunitylunches.WeareproudtohaveheldourfirstvolunteerledcommunitylunchatourEasterBrunch2017.Thismeansthatemployeeswereabletofocusonpar^cipantsandtheirenjoymentoftheevent,ratherthanbebehindthescenescoordina^ngset-up and service. Beyond the amazing commitment to our widely-popular community lunches,volunteershaveassistedusinprovidingsupportsatdayprogram,eventplanningandprep(forMBLiileBigShots,andTurningLeafGames),aswellasday-to-dayassistanceinadministra^vework(suchasdataentry,marke^ngassistance,andorganizing).
Wearealsogratefulfortheimplementa^onofourdatabase‘Volgis^cs’.Thisdatabasesortsalldetailsoftheworkthatvolunteersdo(suchashoursworked,tasksaccomplished,siteloca^onsandmore.)Havingthisinforma^onataglanceiscrucialinupda^ngrecordsandprovidingdatatothevariousdepartmentsthatrequireitfortheirownprocesses.Withitsefficiency,theVolunteerManageranddepartmentcanrunsmoothlyandformallywithconfidenceknowingthebackboneoftheprogramisbeingproficientlyhandledbyitsreliable“assistant”,Volgis^cs.

Asthisreportisbeingwriien,TurningLeafteammembersareimplemen^ngtheApricotCaseManagementSoqware.ApricotCaseManagementSoqwareisaproductofSocialSolu^ons,aU.S.basedcompanythatprovidesperformancemanagementsoqwareforhumanservicesorganiza^ons.Apricotisasafe,adaptable,comprehensiveyetuser-friendlysystemthatwilladdressavarietyofadministra^veneedsinany(orall)ofTurningLeaf’sprogramsanddivisions.Uponlaunch,itwillprovideanimmediateandconsiderableboostinefficiencyinseveralkeyareas:ongoingcasemanagement,outcomesmeasurement,volunteertrackinganddonormanagement(tonameafew).OnceApricotisfullyestablishedandtested,TurningLeafwillbeabletoprovidepoten^alandexis^ngfundingbodieswithquan^fiabledatathatclearlydemonstratesmanyofourservicedeliveryaccomplishments,strengthsandsuccesses.Inaddi^on,Apricotwillhelpusinternallyiden^fyserviceshort-fallswhileassessingtheefficacyofspecificendeavorsorini^a^ves.
