“Opening doors for the people in our communities…”

A letter from the Director: Dear Friends, This year is my 18th with HSMM. I have watched the agency grow in so many ways during my tenure, but this past year has seen some retraction in a few areas and new opportunities in others. During this past year, we celebrated our first anniversary as the lead agency in Clinton County, what is known as the Housing Assistance Resource Agency, or HARA. We had a successful roll out of our work in Clinton County and were welcomed by all. Many new partnerships were formed. Foreclosures have dropped slightly in both Barry and Eaton County. Keeping close ties to the County Treasurers has helped us to assist many people who are going through property tax sale foreclosures. The agency held its 17th golf outing. Because proceeds have been dropping over the last few years, the Board of Directors determined to no longer hold this event. Going forward with other fundraising ideas has been a topic of many conversations over the year. A year-end giving campaign and a Holiday Homelessness Prevention event were planned and executed this last holiday season with reasonable success. Ending Veteran homelessness continues to be a national endeavor, but funding for the SSVF program was cut during the last appropriations. This change caused a loss of funds for us and directly impacted 2 full time employees and the 60 or more Veterans we had been serving each year. We have found ways to reduce the impact on the Veteran, but it still remains a loss to the greater community. The PATH Program, a street outreach program, started in May of this year in the Tri-County region. This program has made great strides in finding street homeless persons and getting them connected to services and into housing. The MSU College of Human Medicine has joined in the efforts and is providing street medicine: taking the doctors to street patients! This unique partnership is leading to more discussions with the MSU School of Law to provide free street legal work. Great things are happening! Blessings to you and yours, Denise

Mission Statement

The Mission of Housing Services Mid Michigan is to assist low to moderate income individuals and families fulfill their need for affordable, safe, and sanitary housing through the participation in federal, state, and local programs and services. Through coordination of such programs, and local providers, Housing Services Mid Michigan will strive to provide a “continuum of care” approach to better serve the diverse needs of program participants and encourage their economic self-sufficiency.

The number of individuals experiencing chronic homelessness

declined by 18 percent, over 19,000 people, between 2010 and 2017. On a single night in January 2017, more than 40,000 veterans were

experiencing homelessness. In 2017, twenty-one percent of the people experiencing homelessness

were children (114,829 children). About ten percent were between the ages of 18 and 24, and nearly seventy percent were over the age of 24.

During 2016 and 2017, homelessness increased overall by one

percent, affecting nearly 4,000 people. Women made up a somewhat greater share of sheltered individuals

(30%) than of unsheltered individuals (26%). Over a longer time period, 2007-2017, individual homelessness

declined by 11 percent (43,619 fewer people). During that same time period of 2007-2017, sheltered homelessness

among families, in major cities, increased by 14 percent, affecting 10,798 people.

HSMM’s Director Named the Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness’ 2017 Community Champion

Congratulations, Denise!

PROJECT RESOURCE CONNECT

In 2017, the Eaton County Continuum of Care held its 9th annual Project Resource Connect (PRC) event at the First Lutheran Church in Charlotte. PRC is a grant-funded “one-stop shop” for those in our community who are homeless or who are low-income, to help them in gaining access to resources for housing, health, and employment. This January event was able to assist over 100 participants.

The event hosted 21 agencies, including SIREN/Eaton Shelter, the Eaton County Health Department, CACS, Peckham, Inc., and others. They offered housing information and referrals, employment search assistance, and interview tips, as well as a free lunch. Each guest also received a gift bag of personal care items such as soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and razors. Clothing, including winter coats, were available for all members of the family.

HSMM’s AmeriCorps member, Mikayla Bower, took the lead on coordinating the event.

If you would like to be involved in next year’s event, call us or check the HSMM website for volunteer opportunities.

Welcoming PATH to the Tri-County Area

Projects for Assistance in Transition from Homelessness

The PATH team is a partnership between Housing Services Mid Michigan and Advent House Ministries, serving Clinton, Eaton, and Ingham counties. PATH began in May 2017. The program’s goal is to reduce or eliminate homelessness for individuals with serious mental illness or co-occurring serious mental illness and substance use disorder. The team’s focus is on building trust with individuals and families disconnected from shelter and housing by providing strength-based, short-term case management. The PATH team’s activities are framed around face-to-face interactions with people living on the streets, in vehicles, camps, or in other non-traditional settings unfit for human habitation, to engage with them and connect them to appropriate services. These services are offered through various area agencies, such as the Housing Assistance Resource Agency, emergency shelters, Community Mental Health, SOAR/Social Security Benefits, and other community resources.

2017 Golf Outing: For the 17th year , Eaton Federal Savings Bank sponsored a golf outing on our behalf. The outing was held at Centennial Acres Golf Course. The funds which were raised help keep our services available to Mid Michigan residents. A special thank you goes out to all of our sponsors and participants.

Our Board of Directors has decided to take a different approach to fundraising going forward. We are planning a series of smaller fundraisers throughout the year.

For example, November is National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Month. As part of November’s fundraising, Mark’s Place, in Eaton Rapids, donated 10% of their sales for one day. That was a big hit! In conjunction with National Giving Tuesday, which is the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, we raised $1,784.50

We are planning other events at various local establishments to encourage the area’s residents to be part of our mission.

Your donations to these events are crucial in making sure families avoid homelessness in Eaton County.

Thank you to our event sponsor, Eaton Federal Savings Bank!
