INTRODUCTIONThe Annual Report adheres to the BUSM Division of Graduate Medical Sciences template for our yearlyprogrammaticreviewandbudgetmeeting.MISSIONThemissionoftheMentalHealthCounselingandBehavioralMedicine(MHCBM)Master’sDegreeProgramatBostonUniversity School ofMedicine is to provide exceptional academic and clinical fieldwork experiencethatemphasizesthecorecompetenciesofclinicalmentalhealthcounselingwithcomplementarytraininginbehavioralmedicineandneuroscience. AccreditedbytheCouncil forAccreditationofCounseling&RelatedEducationalPrograms (CACREP), theMHCBMProgramplacesgreatvalueonexcellence,diversity, integrity,socialjustice,advocacy,collegiality,equalityofopportunity,andinterdisciplinarycollaboration.OurProgramoffers theoretical, experiential, clinical, and research-supported activities related to clinical mental healthcounselingwithadults, adolescents, and childrenon themedical campusaswell as in community settings.We accept and educate a broad range of outstanding students who seek careers as clinical mental healthcounselors. The Program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling&Related Educational Programs(CACREP) throughOctober 2022. We continue to refine ourwebsite and online standing, attend graduateschoolfairs,andgivetalksatinstitutionsthathaveyieldedapplicantsinthepast. Thisrecruitmentstrategyincludes targeting educational institutionswith significant numbers of ethnic, racialminority students and1st-generation university students. The incoming class is approximately 21%minority students, includingAsianandPacificIslander(9%),Latino/Hispanic(9%),andBlack/AfricanAmerican(3%).

ProgrammaticChanges

In response to data from student and course evaluations, our annual faculty retreat, and administrativemeetingswithBUSM,wehavemadeoraremakingthefollowingchanges.

FacultyandStaffResponsiveness:Dr.RachelLevy-BellwaspromotedtoAssociateDirectorinJanuary2017.TheProgramsuccessfullyrecruitedafull-timestaffmember, JohnCiervo,LMHC(Title:AssistantDirectorofFieldPlacement),whowillassistwithclinicalplacementsandworkwithadjunctfaculty,primarilyinclinicalsupervisioncourses.Mr.Ciervo’sstartdateisearlyOctober2017.TheProgramwasalsograntedapprovaltorecruitandhireafull-time,earlymid-careerfacultymemberwhowouldbegininFY19.Theidealcandidatewill have a doctoral degree in Counselor Education & Supervision who has expertise in counseling,neuroscience, and research aswell as a national reputation among counseling organizations. This facultymemberwouldhelpleverageouruniquenicheinthecounselingprofession(onlyCACREP-accreditedclinicalmentalhealthcounselingprograminamedicalschool)andsecureresearchandtraininggrants.

Coursework:We continued tomake a number of changes regarding teaching and courses to bettermatchstudentneeds.First,thiscomingyearincludesnewinstructorsforGroupDynamics,InternshipSupervision,BehavioralMedicine&AppliedHealthPsychology,Psychopathology,andMentalHealthAssessment.Second,inFall2016,weconductedapilotproject forthecourse,Marriage&FamilyCounseling,byofferinga2-dayvideo training for an evidence-based couple counseling model, which was developed by the UniversityOutreachProgramoftheGottmanInstitute.Almostalloftheenrolledstudentsvoluntarilyparticipatedintheproject and received the training. As a result, the studentsearned andwere awarded theGottmanLevel1ClinicalTrainingCertificateofCompletion.Thestudentsoverwhelminglypraisedthetraining,whichwillnowbe a permanent component of the course moving forward. Third, Dr. Laurie Craigen spearheaded themodification of the course, Human Growth & Development, into a one-week summer intensive (Sunday-Thursday). ThecoursewasconductedduringthethirdweekofMay2017atasmallhotelinProvincetown,MAwhere11studentsparticipated.AlthoughDr.Craigenservedasthecoursedirector,allcorefacultywereguest lecturers and one Program alumna, JillianAlfeo, LMHC, also lectured. Because the coursewaswell-received,thecoursewillbeofferedagainasanintensiveinSummer2018.

Clinical: During the 2016-2017 academic year, we added 13 new programs to become official counselingtrainingsitesforourstudents.Wecreatedmoreopportunitiesforstudentstoengageinintegratedhealthcaresettings,outpatient,school,inpatient,partialhospitalizationprograms,eatingdisorder,andsubstanceabuseservices. This year, we lost 3 training sites due to program closures. Students currently have access toapproximately140trainingservices.

Recruitment:Wehavemademodifications to our recruitment strategywith twoprimary goals inmind: 1)increase the number of applicants to the program by upwards of 50%; and 2) increase the number ofmatriculatedunderrepresentedminoritystudents. Sucheffortswillincludefocusingonstatesthathavethehighest concentration of licensed professional counselors; expanding our targeted audience to psychology,human services, sociology, and education majors; contacting academic advisors who submitted letters ofrecommendations for our incoming students; identifying and contacting undergraduate career servicecounselors who focus on arts and sciences and the helping professions; focusing on race- and/or ethnic-specificstudentundergraduateorganizations;andenhancingourwebsite.
