LET'S GO, RVA! | 3
Active living, to me, is about much more than
exercise. I’ve met most of my neighbors (now friends)
while taking walks. I’ve become familiar with the
North and South Sides and the East and West Ends
while running or biking. I’ve grown to treasure the
James River and our park system while hiking. I’ve
marveled at how hip RVA has become, and how
proud I am to live here, while sharing the energy of
outdoor festivals such as Dominion Energy Riverrock.
And from traveling on foot and by bike on our
streets and sidewalks, I’ve become more aware of
important issues that affect our community, such
as public transportation and bike and pedestrian
safety. Active living has connected me to our city and
community, and Sports Backers is the driving force
behind active living in RVA. Sports Backers events
motivate tens of thousands to get off the couch and
join a collective celebration of active living, while
showcasing the beauty and dynamism of our city
and boosting our local economy and civic pride.
Thousands of our school children and their volunteer
coaches have joined Sports Backers Kids Run RVA
clubs to make movement part of their regular routine.
Sports Backers Fitness Warriors pay it forward
by teaching free classes in their neighborhoods,
fostering future classes of Warriors, and enlisting
their colleagues and classes to join the battle against
a culture of inactivity. Sports Backers’ work with local
and state governments is informing and changing
basic infrastructure - more bike and pedestrian lanes,
sidewalks and public spaces - and public policy (such
as the Vision Zero initiative) to ensure active living
is safe and accessible to everyone. Sports Backers’
impact is about more than improving physical fitness
and health, though those are important positive
outcomes; Sports Backers’ active living movement
connects us all to our city and community.
Sincerely,
Maureen C. Ackerly
Board Chair
Active l iving, to me, is about much
more than exercise. . . Active l iving
has connected me to our city and
community."

SUPPORTING the REGION’S ACTIVE LIVING NETWORK
The transformation of a culture takes
time and commitment through cross-
sector collaboration. Sports Backers
took on the challenge to establish
itself as the convener around active
living and has become the backbone
organization leading a cross-sector
partnership for active living.”
– Sherrie Armstrong, President and CEO of the Community Foundation for a greater Richmond
WE ARE
SPORTS BACKERS CREATES TWO NEW SCHOLARSHIPS
Sports Backers created two new
scholarships in the amount of $2,500 each
in memory of staff members Cheryl Lockett
Oliver and Raymond Delaware Patterson.
These scholarships were presented for the
first time at our 27th Annual Richmond-
Times Dispatch/Sports Backers Scholar-
Athlete Awards. Annual scholarships are
awarded to one college-bound senior girl
and boy who have achieved a minimum GPA
of 2.5, and are in need of financial aid to
pursue higher education.
GOV. NORTHAM AT MOVEMENT MAKERS
Governor Ralph Northam shared his opinion
on the benefits of a community that
prioritizes healthy and active living at our
sixth-annual Active RVA Awards presented
by Cigna. The event was held the same day
as the Movement Makers Active
Living Summit. The awards honored
123 area schools and 44 companies.

Since the opening of the bike
lanes on Franklin Street, I have
changed my routes and use this
every t ime now. I love it . I have
been riding with cars for so long,
I had no idea how amazing riding
in protected bike lanes could be. I
just wanted to say thank you for
your contributions and efforts.”
– Jessica, Richmond Resident
FRANKLIN STREET BIKE LANE
Construction concluded on a two-way protected
bike lane on the north side of Franklin Street. Sports
Backers Bike Walk RVA staff and advocates were
joined by Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney to officially
open the new bike lane and ride it on Bike to Work
Day. The celebration capped off Sports Backers
fifth-annual RVA Bike Month
presented by Bon Secours.

CELEBRATING ACTIVE LIVING through EVENTS
We had an amazing experience
yesterday! Running my first
marathon with friends was great
but doing it at America's Friendliest
Marathon was unlike anything
I expected. That t it le is so well
deserved. From the employees, to the
volunteers, to the runners...Everyone
was so kind and encouraging.”
–Tara, Anthem Richmond Marathon Participant

RUN BIKE RELAY PRESENTED BY RAGNAR DEBUTS
Not even record-setting rainfall
of over seven inches on race
day could sidetrack the debut
of Run Bike Relay presented by
Ragnar in June. The 125-mile
roundtrip overnight team relay
from Richmond to Jamestown
and back was forced to reroute
around flooded trails, but
received rave reviews from the
80+ teams that participated.

“The Fitness Warriors program is
an amazing platform. Through this
initiative, lives are being changed.
As Warriors, we’re tackling the
important public health issues in
our communities. This program is
making a difference.”
– Terrica Woolridge, Fitness Warrior
TWO CLASSES OF WARRIORS
For the first time our Fitness Warriors
celebrated two classes completing the
program in a year. These 32 graduates
have gone on to teach free group fitness
classes at least once a week in vulnerable
areas throughout the Richmond region.
RICHMOND ROAD RUNNERS CLUB
AND SPORTS BACKERS JOIN FORCES
Our partnership with the Richmond
Road Runners Club has enabled Sports
Backers to provide grants to 33 schools
and community groups seeking funds to
support new and existing run clubs or
to put on school-based running events
during the past school year.

Leadership
We recently had staff members join the boards for
the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation and SwimRVA,
both partner organizations in making active living a
reality for more Richmonders. We have staff members
serving on a total of 11 boards across the region.
Bike Walk RVA
RVA Bike Month consisted of 55 events,
largely organized by volunteers, and 4,000
participants! According to the League of
American Bicyclists, the Richmond region’s
bike month has the largest number of events
(regardless of community size) in the nation.
Events
Over 6,100 participants took part in the Anthem Corporate
Run on June 7th, setting a new event registration record and
demonstrating the importance of workplace wellness initiatives,
team-building programs, and business-to-business networking
opportunities to companies of all sizes in the Richmond area.
Active RVA Certified Companies & Schools
In 2018, Sports Backers recognized 44 companies and 123
schools and early childhood education centers across the
region for being Active RVA Certified and for integrating
physical activity as part of their culture.

ROCKIN' the river life AND TURNIN' 10!
May marked the 10th Dominion Energy Riverrock festival. Coinciding with the anniversary the
festival was named the 2017 ‘Green Event of the
Year’ at the annual Virginia Green Travel Start
Awards program. The Dominion
Energy Riverrock website also
got a makeover with a redesign
and rolled out in time for our 2018
registration launch.
THEY LIKE US! THEY
really LIKE US!
Both the Anthem Richmond Marathon and the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k presented by Kroger were honored on the BibRave100 list of the best races in America. A combination of
runner nominations, running industry surveys, and
online votes from runners contributed to the list,
which named the marathon as one of the 15 best
26.2-mile races in the U.S. and the 10k as one of
the top 15 at that distance.
VETERAN MTT coach RETIRES
Don Garber (pictured top right
with wife Betsy), the only head coach in the 16-year history of the Sports Backers Marathon Training Team, hung up his (very colorful) shorts at the conclusion of the 2017
season. During his time at the helm, Don, along
with his team of extraordinary volunteer coaches,
turned marathon training from a solitary pursuit into
a group activity and inspired and prepared over
15,000 people to realize their dream of running 26.2
miles. Enjoy sleeping in on weekends, Don!
WE LIKE, WE like TO PARTY!
We always like a good party and
the 40th running of the Anthem Richmond Marathon in November gave us plenty of
reason to let our hair down! All three races –
the full marathon, half marathon and 8k – saw
participant increases and we recognized the
four “Old Lions” who have completed the
marathon all 40 times!

WE’RE the hottest thing ON TWO WHEELS!
The League of American Bicyclists
recognized Sports Backers with a
Gold Level Bicycle Friendly Business
award for 2017. A Bike Friendly
Business since 2013, this marks the
first time we’ve earned Gold status,
acknowledging Sports Backers as
an organization that is transforming
the American workplace.
VOLUNTEERS – OUR life BLOOD!
Our annual Volunteer Thank You
Reception in November gave us the
opportunity to recognize over 7,000
volunteers who make what we do
possible. A huge thanks to our volunteers
of the year, Garry Whelan (Bike Walk
RVA), Margaret Maslak (Sports Backers
Event Volunteer), Annette Sirica (Kids
Run RVA), Theresa Caldwell (Fitness
Warriors), and Jill Meads, Judy Wood, and
Maggie Rice (Training Teams).
EXPANDING our impact THROUGH CAMPAIGN
DONATIONS
We surpassed the $2.5 million fundraising goal
for our Building an Active Future campaign,
raising a total of $2.52 million. Thanks to generous
commitments and donations Sports Backers will
be able to expand the economic impact of sports
tourism, continue working to improve bike and
pedestrian infrastructure, increase accessible
fitness programs, and strengthen our active living
partner network. Let’s go, RVA!
ANDRE INGRAM HEADLINES Scholar-Athlete Awards
DINNER
In just 48 hours in early April, Andre
Ingram went from anonymous 10-year minor league
journeyman to the talk of the sports world, scoring
19 points for the L.A. Lakers in his NBA debut at
age 32. The Highland Springs High School graduate,
who was the Times-Dispatch/Sports Backers male
Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2002, capped off
his memorable spring by serving as the keynote
speaker at this year’s 27th annual Times-Dispatch/
Sports Backers Scholar-Athlete Awards.

Sports Backers successfully surpassed its Building an Active Future campaign
goal, raising a total of $2.52 million. “Funds from the Building an Active Future
campaign allow us to double down on our most impactful work and expand our
reach even further into vulnerable communities,” said Maureen Ackerly, Chair of
the Board of Directors for Sports Backers. “Through this campaign, we are able
to continue to provide residents of greater Richmond with access to safe and
affordable active living opportunities on a daily and weekly basis.”
“As a longtime Sports Backers volunteer, participant, and donor, I’ve seen over
the past decade how our region’s active, outdoor culture has been enhanced
and promoted by Sports Backers,” said campaign chairman Roy Grier. “Sports
Backers’ staff and volunteers are already hard at work using the funds raised
through this campaign to build a more active future for all residents of our
region and bring physical activity to all corners of our community.”
Sports Backers will work towards these goals in accordance with the
organization’s five-year strategic plan and community activity and health
initiatives, including Bike Walk RVA, Fitness Warriors, Kids Run RVA, and
Active RVA.
The success of the Building an Active Future campaign is thanks to
contributions and pledges from corporations, foundations, community
leaders, and regional governments.
A big thanks to our campaign committee!
