A Word from the CEO...The opioid problem in our country has hit epidemic proportions. On average, 115 Americans die each day from an opioid overdose. That is over 41,975 people annually. In 2016, there were over 63,000 overdose deaths from all drugs. 66% of those deaths involved a prescription or illicit opioid. To give a sense of proportion, about 3,000 people died in the tragedy of 911, 36,914 people died in the Korean War and 58,220 American military died in the Vietnam War.

Pennsylvania had the highest age-adjusted overdose death rates in the country in 2016. New Jersey overdose deaths rose 21% from 2014 to 2015.

2017 GrowthPyramid Healthcare experienced yet another year of exciting growth in services and locations in 2017. In Pennsylvania we opened a new outpatient facility in Hawley and a new residential program in the Lehigh Valley, and moved the Pittsburgh and Altoona outpatient locations to new offices. Bed expansions at the Duncansville, Pittsburgh and Hillside locations were completed along with the conversion of Quakertown from an adolescent to an adult program. New Jersey saw the development of outpatient detoxification services in several locations, the expansion of co-occurring treatment for middle school students and the open-ing of our Waypointe residential young adult mental health program. In North Carolina Pyramid Healthcare completed the acquisition of Tapestry eating disorder treatment programs and expanded the operations into a new outpatient

location in Asheville and developed a new residential program in Fletcher.

2018 Continued ExpansionThis year looks to be of even more significant growth. We will open two residential drug/alcohol treatment pro-grams by the end of 2018, one in Dallas, PA and the other in Hammonton, NJ.

Coming in 2019A residential adult eating disorders program will open in PA (see below) by the start of 2019. New private schools for children with autisim will open in Altoona and Chambersburg, PA. Pyramid Healthcare will open its first outpatient mental health program in Atlanta, GA, with a second location to open soon after that.

The demand for the high quality services that Pyramid Healthcare and its affiliate companies provide is significant, and we look forward to expanding our network to help those in need.

Seeds of Hope is a service line specializing in the treatment of eating disorders under the Onward Behavioral Health umbrella. Seeds of Hope offers a full continuum of outpatient services, including partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, individual therapy, and weekly meal support groups. In 2016, Seeds of Hope expanded from one to four locations, now covering southeastern Pennsylvania with offices on the Main Line and in Phila-delphia, Lancaster, and the Lehigh Valley.

In Fall 2018, Seeds of Hope will open its first residential eating disorders program. Located in serene Lake Ariel, Pennsylvania, Seeds of Hope at Mountainside will offer 12 beds for adult women. The Seeds of Hope at Mountainside residential program will compliment the unique approach to treating eating disorders that we have embraced in the outpatient

system by treating the whole person and addressing the underlying anxiety disorder that precipitates disordered eating. This work will be accomplished using a multi-modal approach consisting of process group therapy, expressive art therapy, educational nutrition and cooking interventions, mindfulness, and various holistic treatment modalities. Clients will learn pragmatic solutions throughout the healing process as they prepare to return to everyday life.

Seeds of Hope at Mountainside is another step forward for Onward Behavioral Health in developing a comprehensive network of services within the behavioral health continuum. Seeds of Hope at Mountainside is also the first residential program to open within the Onward Behavioral Health matrix of care.

THE

middle school Program aT HigH focus cEnTErs

Partial care and intensive outpatient Programs (ioP) for ages 10 - 13The onset of psychiatric symptoms can often occur during a teenager’s middle school years. Depression, anxiety, and even self-harm are becoming more common in pre-adolescence, and can cause significant disruption in a teen’s life. if interventions are introduced early in these situations, these youth will have better success in navigating the ongoing challenges that they may face during adolescence and even long term.

The Middle school Psychiatric Program at High focus centers has been designed to address the unique needs of the preadolescent population. a multidisciplinary team works with each child and his or her family to address various psychosocial stressors and develop effective coping strategies. Therapy groups focus on teaching these coping skills as well as communication skills, self-esteem building, and mindfulness skills, all while keeping in mind the patient’s level of maturity and social develop-ment. Experiential therapy is a core component, with art therapy and pet therapy also incorpo-rated into the curriculum. Psychiatric evaluation is provided along with medication monitoring as needed.

These ser-vices are combined with our traditional model of process therapy groups, individual and family meetings, psychiatric evaluations and ongoing medication monitoring as needed.

Since opening in 2015, the Middle School programs have thrived. Six of our seven sites now offer these services, with Cherry Hill scheduled to open in the fall. In addition to enhancing our services, the Middle School programs have contributed to significant growth in our overall program census. From 2015 to the end of 2017, excluding our two most recent start-up sites, the overall average daily census for our Adolescent Psychiatric Programs has increased from 90.9 to 117.56. This is an increase of 30% in less than two years. Including all seven sites, the overall average daily census of our adolescent programs has increased by 55% during that time.

Due to the success of the Middle School tracks, we are currently exploring the viability of further expansion of mental health services along the developmental range. Unfortunately, children are presenting with psychiatric difficulties earlier and earlier. Our goal is to build on the effectiveness of the High Focus Centers’ Middle School programs!

The Middle School Psychiatric Program at High Focus Centers

In October 2015, High Focus Centers’ Paramus location opened their first clinical program to serve a child population. The Middle School Psychiatric Program at High Focus Centers was designed to address the unique needs of the preadolescent child. Adolescent (ages 13-18) psychiatric programs have demonstrated success and growth at High Focus Centers since their inception in 2002. However, this expansion of services broadened the focus and required our clinical leadership to develop a curriculum that would effectively treat preadolescents.

The result is a model that is overseen by a multidisciplinary team that works with each child and his or her family to address various psychosocial stressors and develop effective coping strategies. Therapy groups focus on teaching these coping skills, as well as communication skills, self-esteem building, and mind-fulness skills, all while keeping in mind the patient’s level of maturity and social development.

The new curriculum emphasizes “exper-iential” therapy as a core component. It includes an increased number of therapy groups dedicated to art therapy, yoga, movement, and pet therapy.

Pyramid Healthcare has moved into the Metro Atlanta Behavioral Health market under the direction of Executive Director Thomas Connell. Pyramid Family Behavioral Healthcare was developed in March of 2018. After extensive market analysis and collaboration with providers in the metro Atlanta market, Pyramid Family Behavioral Healthcare will provide out of network psychiatric

Intensive Outpatient Programming (IOP). The clinical suite located in Johns Creek (North Atlanta region) is 3,964 square feet of renovated medical/office space. In 2017-2018, the Pyramid Healthcare system participated in six successful CARF accreditation visits. Each of the six visits resulted in a three-year accreditation. This is the third three-year accreditation for Onward Behavioral Health, and the second for October Road, and the Pyramid Healthcare programs.

This accreditation decision represents the highest level of accreditation that can be given to an organization and shows the organization’s substantial conformance to the CARF standards. An organization receiving a three year accreditation participates in a rigorous peer review process. It has demonstrated to a team of surveyors during an on-site visit its commitment to offering programs and services that are measurable, accountable, and of the highest quality.

As stated in the notification letter from CARF “This achievement is an indication of the organization’s dedication and

will draw from the large primary clinician (psychiatrists, clinicians, psychologists) market in Atlanta and capitalize on the absence of Psychiatric IOP in the Atlanta market. The clinical team will focus on the treatment of mood disorders (Depressive disorders, Bipolar Disorder and Anxiety disorders). The program will focus on treating escalating referrals, individuals with mental health needs that can not be met adequately by weekly psychotherapy or general psychiatry appointments. The anticipated growth of the program over the next 12 months includes serving roughly eight individuals per IOP group. The space will support Pyramid Family Behavioral Healthcare by providing four concurrent IOPs: Adult Day IOP, Adult Evening IOP, Adolescent Day IOP, Adolescent Evening IOP. The

location will also provide the behavioral health community with monthly training seminars, family therapy groups, family intensives and couples intensives.

In addition to the new site for clinical services, the Pyramid Healthcare Assessment Center will open in sister suite 100B. This location will serve as a corporate base for Georgia operations. This location will provide assessments Monday through Friday for behavioral health needs. The Assessment Center will serve as the access point for not only Pyramid Family Behavioral Healthcare but for the Silver Line in the Atlanta market. This southeast call center will absorb call center services for current operations and provide call center services for Pyramid Healthcare southeast operations moving forward.

commitment to improving the quality of the lives of the persons served. Services, personnel, and documentation clearly indicate an established pattern of conformance to standards…Your organization should take pride in achieving this high level of accreditation.”

CARF is an independent, nonprofit accrediting body whose mission is to promote the quality, value, and optimal outcomes of services through a consultative accreditation process and a focus on continuous improvement of services that center on enhancing the lives of the persons served. Founded in 1966, the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities establishes consumer-focused standards to help organizations measure and improve the quality of their programs and services.
