From the Board and AdministrationFor several years, the Board of Directors has focused less on management and more on visioning as we have restructured our administration and completed our strategic plan. In 2017-18, the school was in a position to accomplish many of the plan’s intermediate and ultimate goals. We are fortunate to have strong enrollment, a passionate and skilled faculty, a dedicated parent body, and a robust and committed Board.

To achieve the goals set out in our strategic plan, we have:

• formed a Human Resources Committee assigned to propose a multi-year strategy to bring salaries up to community standards and to support the administration in clarifying personnel policies;

• increased salaries by 5% for the coming year and removed pre-existing salary caps;

• created a Long-Term Site Planning Committee to guide the best use and expansion of our buildings and grounds;

• approved the re-formation of a Funds Development Committee to support the Board and staff in setting and attaining development goals;

• formed a Leadership Committee to improve communication among the College, Board, Parent Council and Administration.

This past year has been the culmination of my 22 years working in the administration of the Eugene Waldorf School. I have watched the school mature while still remaining true to its founding principles, including involving the teachers in all aspects of the school that affect the educational experience. The result is a vibrant school community—both within and outside of the classroom—one that works through mutual respect, and a desire to learn and grow together.

I am honored to have been a part of it and I am thrilled to welcome our new Administrator, Ellen Mahoney. I know Ellen will lend her warmth and expertise to an institution that has an enormous impact on children’s lives, and the adult community of parents and teachers that surround them. I will continue in a supportive part-time role through December of 2018.

The calling to be part of this school is truly life-changing for all who have a part in its development. I am grateful for the time I have spent here and look forward to being part of its continued maturation and growth through my ongoing participation as an alumni parent and supporter of EWS into the future.

From the Faculty ChairThe vitality of a community is maintained through the growth and transformation that take place with each new impulse from those that bring their gifts to it. Any healthy ecosystem thrives on this dynamic, and the cycle of the year provides fresh opportunities for the renewal of the garden that is our community here at the Eugene Waldorf School. This quotation, from the founder of Waldorf education, has served as a beacon to our work this past school year and our continued commitment to fulfill its promise, as we move into a new phase in the school’s history.

It is with great joy that I have joined EWS as the full-time Faculty Chair. The warm welcome and support shown me have enabled me to step into this role with enthusiasm and to find my way to best support the work of the school. Working with our long-time Administrator, Molly Wilson, has been an enriching experience, and she will be missed as she moves towards a well-deserved retirement.

We are fortunate indeed to have a capable faculty, a strong College of Teachers, a supportive Board of Directors and active Parent Council. Our carefully crafted strategic plan—developed through the work of these important pillars—has given us all guidance this past year and will continue to inspire us. Here are some projects of note from the 2017-18 school year:

• The College of Teachers formed a Community Inclusion Committee to expand the dialogue regarding how the school and pedagogy may best reflect the many facets of our school’s culture.

• Strong mentoring has ensured that all faculty members have master teachers who guide and support them.

• Regular teacher evaluation has served to maintain the integrity of our program through valuable opportunities for continual improvement.

• In the school’s ongoing work with the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America (AWSNA), careful attention to the recommendations of the visiting accreditation team and our efforts to improve the school, based on these recommendations, have strengthened our program and maintained the value of a Waldorf education.

The College and Faculty have been proud to serve the children and community this past year. It is our combined love for the children and their continued well-being that join us in a common purpose. I hope to better serve our inspiring community as we become more acquainted in the coming years.

A Tribute to Willi MullerWritten by Weston Tracy

At the start of this year, one of the school’s founders, Willi Muller passed away.

I had the privilege and joy of being one of Mr. Muller’s students from first through eighth grade.

He was a pillar of the school as he was a pillar of my childhood. His firm morning handshakes, sweater and tie uniform, and his Swiss gravitas were all hallmarks of my young life.

He was the paragon of composure, carrying himself with a singular uprightness. I took his richness of character for granted as a child. But now, being away from the Waldorf community for 22 years, I’ve found that those with his steadfast, selfless moral drive are rare, and so valuable.

I’ve looked through old photos, class books and his beautiful, handwritten year-end reviews; trying to remember everything I could. What I remember most fondly were the many times his reserved manner was betrayed by his childlike excitement for knowledge. His lessons were alive with his own wonder for the material, and his joy at seeing us finally grasp it.

He was especially enthusiastic when we’d have a science block, or be out in nature. Any time our class gets together, we inevitably retell stories of field trips and science experiments gone awry. Many fine shirts were ruined, and many students were thrilled with daring adventures, all in the noble pursuit of exploration.

He held a fierce conviction in his values. But he was welcoming of challenge, and would sit with me for hours when I had questions. He embodied a dichotomy that I still try to emulate; he held the confidence of knowing without it suffocating his enthusiasm for discovery.

He left me with a deep love for life-long learning and a fierce conviction to act in the world with nobility and kindness. I couldn’t have asked for a better teacher. I am so glad that the Eugene Waldorf School continues to thrive and spread the ideals that he cherished and so purely embodied.

From the Parent CouncilWithin the Eugene Waldorf School, the Parent Council is the primary forum for parent ideas. We offer a place to work together to bring inspirations and initiatives into fruition. Through this work we strive to build healthy relationships within our community.

Over this past year, our focus was to engage the parent body in multiple ways to strengthen connections between parents, faculty, and students. Through our working retreats and parent surveys, we identified areas of interest and created more opportunities for parents to become involved. We kept the community informed through regular updates in the Wren, posting in the EWS Parents Facebook group, and through monthly email summaries of the Parent Council meetings.

Parent Council’s focus in 2017-18 included:

• Organizing social events — family game night, skate night, Community Café, parent skill-sharing gatherings, guest reception tables before assemblies, faculty appreciation luncheon, and volunteer appreciation at the Annual General Meeting.

• Providing outreach to new families — all-school picnic to welcome new families.

• Creating an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee — hosted the film Cracking the Codes and led an identity activity at the Annual General Meeting.

• Hosting educational events — Boys Alive with Janet Allison and The Seven Core Principles of Waldorf Education with Elan Leibner.

• Providing leadership — hosting leadership dinners and participating in monthly leadership meetings with the Board, Administration and College to facilitate a deeper understanding of the workings of the various groups within the school.

As we look forward to the coming year, Parent Council hopes to expand our work in meaningful ways to meet the evolving interests and needs of our world.

Waldorf Education is turning 100 years old! The first Waldorf School was founded in Stuttgart, Germany in 1919. Today there are over 1,100 Waldorf schools and almost 2,000 Waldorf kindergartens in some 80 countries around the globe. More schools are opening all the time. We are making our centennial an occasion to further develop Waldorf education for contemporary times and focus more consciously on its global dimensions. There are exciting projects happening on all continents. Keep your ears and eyes open and be part of the movement: 100 years are just the beginning!
