A MESSAGE FROM THE

Board of DirectorsDear Friends,

2015, MADA’s most amazing year yet. Growth in the midst of progress. Taking

possession of our new building. Increasing our output in all our services to the

most vulnerable. Ongoing renovations during the entire year.

The new kitchen was inaugurated with Passover cooking in March. Immediately

thereafter the offi ce staff moved in, while food services still continued at the

Plaza. The last touches in the kitchen were completed in May and then all the

food prep started at full tilt at our new facility supplying our onsite and off site

cafeterias and Shabbat to Share meals as well as staging and delivery.

The Food Bank distribution, however, continued at the Plaza until midsummer

when it fi nally moved into half sized premises on the ground fl oor of our new

building. At the same time the reinforcement work on the rest of the ground fl oor

to support the second fl oor extension of the Cons Family Dining Hall (Simcha

Hall) was well underway.

Suddenly, a few weeks before Rosh Hashanah, we were informed that due to

circumstances Montreal Food Baskets would not be able to supply their Rosh

Hashanah food baskets to the needy. MADA to the rescue. We temporarily

halted the renovations in order to use the Cons Family Dining Hall for staging

and packing 2000 food baskets. This was the beginning of our merger with the

Montreal Food Baskets, now in eff ect for every Passover and Rosh Hashanah.

Thereafter at a frenetic pace, to make up for lost time, the Cons Family Dining

Hall was completed just in time for the October Ribbon Cutting featuring Mayor

Coderre.

Throughout this year of transforming MADA from a grass roots enterprise to

becoming an established critical force for goodness to the most needy in our

community, we maintained our focus, thank G-d, on who we serve, how we serve

and why.

Read on and you will fi nd out that in 2015 MADA provided services to 18,960

clients all at no cost to them. Most incredible, but true!

In these trying times, MADA is being called upon to increase our services to the

disadvantaged. We are committed to do everything in our power and beyond to

help. However….

You are the one that makes all this possible. Your generous fi nancial support,

whether in money or in kind. Your readiness to give of your time to volunteer. Your

moral support.

Montreal would not be the same without MADA.

MADA would not be the same without You!

A MESSAGE FROM THE

Executive DirectorDear Friends,

The Lubavitcher Rebbe has compared our people to a handshake, noting that like each fi nger, “you and

I are only fragments of the whole until we come together.”

As I refl ect upon 2015, I am amazed by the amount of transition and growth that we have experienced,

both within the organization and community wide. The purchase of MADA’s new building, which is

referred to as MADA’s ‘New Home,’ indicates, on a new level, that MADA is Montreal’s central address

for fi ghting poverty and loneliness. What intrigues me is the huge impact our mission has on our

supporters and volunteers. We are not just touching the lives of patrons; we touch over 18,000 people

in communities across Montreal. It is heartwarming that we now have a ‘home’ to receive everyone.

MADA worked tirelessly this year to renovate the building, giving consideration to the needs of the

patrons, staff and volunteers so we can function as one entity. The task of packing, moving and

renovating was challenging because it was of utmost importance that the changeover should not aff ect

the services, since most of our patrons would not cope if there would have been an interruption.

We now see the growing and moving pains starting to settle and must thank our volunteers and patrons

for their dedication throughout the transition. At the same time our donors have been stepping up to

make this dream a reality by off ering their trades and fi nancial gifts in support of the new building.

MADA is called a Community Center. As we grow and reach out more and more into the community

we see the fragments of people from all walks of life coming together with one common goal of caring

and taking care of each other. A community is made up of families and we are proud to be welcoming

everyone to come together as partners in the battle against poverty and as a united ‘MADA Family.’

May we continue to work as a whole – as a true family – and may your continued good deeds hasten

our immediate Redemption.

Sincerely,

Chaim S. CohenMADA Community Center Executive Director

2016 FILL THE PANTRY FOOD DRIVE

MADA thanks its sponsors, organizers and volunteers for making this year’s

“Fill the Pantry” food drive an unparalleled success. Fill the Pantry Food

Drive celebrated the Montreal community’s eff orts to join hands in fi ghting

poverty.

Starting in the schools, each class brought in a specifi c food item, to help

“Fill the Pantry” of a needy family. Then, the schools had an assembly, where

the students had the opportunity to fi ll boxes with each of the nonperishable

foods they brought. The students took great pride in the understanding that

they could make a signifi cant and meaningful diff erence in someone’s life.

The food drive culminated in a fun-fi lled day at Quartier Cavendish on

Sunday, April 10, where people were encouraged to bring nonperishable

food products as donations. The event included entertainment and activities

for the more than four hundred children who attended. We also had hands

on volunteering, encouraging participants to come to MADA and volunteer

with greater frequency.

We were honoured to have David Birnbaum, MNA for D’Arcy McGee, show

support as a representative of the city. We accomplished our goals of raising

awareness and fostering compassion with a call to action to help those

struggling with basic necessities.

Your help is always welcome for MADA’s future Fill the Pantry Food Drive!

GROUND BREAKING

MADA’s new home opened offi cially in 2015 with Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre’s offi ciating at the ribbon-

cutting ceremony. That was just the fi rst phase of building MADA’s new headquarters, which has become the

central address for fi ghting poverty.

The fi rst phase was a full year of innovative renovations, allowing MADA to move into its new Decarie Blvd.

location. Every room and aspect in the renovated building was planned and built to provide dignity and warmth

to those less fortunate.

Supporters of our building committee and building campaign donors encouraged us to take the next vital step

in supporting the many clients who require handicapped accessibility. MADA is proud to say that in 2016 we

started the groundbreaking necessary to build the long-awaited front entrance extension that will house an

elevator for the handicapped.

Only through the continued support and the generosity of Montreal’s community can MADA continue to meet

the needs of the less fortunate. As Mayor Coderre said “MADA’s services are vital for the Montreal community!

Montreal would not be the same without MADA. And MADA would not be the same without all of its volunteers

and supporters.”

CORPORATE TEAM BUILDING & COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERING

MADA’s goal is to ensure that no one is left behind in our community. Daily life

can be diffi cult without a secure income, family or friends. What is the secret to MADA’s success in reaching

out to the less fortunate? The answer lies in the devotion, eff ort and compassion of our dedicated volunteers.

MADA’s vast range of volunteers confront the stark reality of the unrelenting loneliness and poverty that face

so many in our midst. They never imagined that life could be fi lled with such adversity. Recognizing how

grateful they must to be for the blessings life has off ered them, families coming to volunteer pass the message

on to their children: “Be grateful and give thanks by giving back to the community!”

MADA has also become a focal point for corporate team building. Companies are contributing fi nancially

and then staff members are experiencing the hands-on eff ect of volunteering as a team. This team building

experience provides an atmosphere of unity in the offi ce environment or place of business and a sense of

community.

In an interview in the Canadian Jewish News, a philanthropist in our community spoke of his introduction

to volunteering at MADA. “I wanted to give “tzedakah” (charity) by giving of my time and energy, not simply

writing cheques. Through the volunteering experience, I learned of the incredible work that MADA does, not

only in feeding the poor and supplying them with bare necessities but in giving comfort to the lonely.”

This year, MADA exceeded the previous years’ number of volunteers: over two thousand throughout all the

departments. Many volunteers claim that they get more than they give! They thank MADA for providing them

with the opportunity to fi nd fulfi llment, all the while benefi ting the community.

Through caring and sharing, our clients, volunteers, donors and supporters are enriched. Let us continue to be

the driving force that unites us into one compassionate and inspirational family.

In November, MADA’s Young Women’s Leadership hosted its fi rst annual

exciting paint night to raise awareness among its peers and to benefi t MADA’s

services.

Members reached out to the community for donations of prizes for the event

entered in a Chinese auction, to helped fi ght hunger in Montreal.

Co-chairs Estee Fagen and Ali Lydynia thank all who attended and sponsored

the event, helping support MADA in a joint quest to ensure that those living

in poverty are secure in the knowledge that their basic needs are met — and

done so in a dignifi ed manner. The event was a great success, and we look

forward to other young women’s events.
