Significant and unprecedented challenges are facing our global community—from climatechangetorefugeecrisestostrainsondemocraticsystemsofgovernance.Theseseriousproblemsrequireus towork together—acrossborders, cultures, andcontinents—innewand inventiveways.Recenttrendssignalinganextremeshifttowardreclusion,isolationism,andhyper-nationalism,underscoreanimperativeforincreasedglobalinterconnectedness.

Working in partnership with the Picker Center at the School ofInternational andPublicAffairs,we have been able to identify areas andobservepublicpolicyinitiativesinBrazilthatcouldbeusedasmodelsforotherpartsof theworld.Examplesof successful case studies includeonedonefortheBravaFoundationthatlooksattheeducationalreformintheStateofRio and another forComunitas that examined strategicplanningpracticesinfivemunicipalitiesindifferentpartsofBrazil.

STRATEGIES FOR GROWTH: THE CHANGING ROLE OF THE STATE CONFERENCE

Aspartofathree-yearresearchinitiativeledbyColumbiaUniversity’sCenteronGlobalEconomicGovernance(CGEG),thetwo-dayconference“StrategiesforGrowth:TheChangingRoleoftheState”washeldinRiodeJaneiroandinSãoPauloincollaborationwithGetulioVargasFoundation(FGV)andUMBrasil.

The project also included conferences hosted by the ColumbiaGlobal Centers in Paris and in Beijing and was developed following theglobalfinancial crisis and thechallenges thathavebeen facedbyEurope,EastAsia,andLatinAmericabothindividuallyandcollectively.Topicssuchasfiscalandstructuralpolicy,monetaryandbankingissues,andinstitutionallegitimacyandtransparencywerediscussedbyspecialistsonbothdays. Maria Silvia BastosMarques, President of the BrazilianNationalDevelopment Bank (BNDES) and a member of the Rio Global CenterAdvisoryBoard,gaveakeynotespeechinRio,andIlanGoldfajn,Presidentof the Central Bank of Brazil, provided the keynote in São Paulo. BothaddressedhowtheirinstitutionsarepreparingtoovercomechallengesfacedbyBrazilinaglobalcontext.

Throughout2016,studentsfromColumbia’sFuFoundationSchoolofEngineering andApplied Sciences and fromCoppe (Rio de JaneiroFederalUniversitySchoolofEngineering)participatedinthematicDesignChallengesaimedatsolvingurbanproblemssuchasurbanwaterandremotesensingissuesaspartof theRioInnovationHubproject.Variousprototypeswerecreated,rangingfrompedestrian-poweredstreet illumination toamobileappable todetectAedesaegypti (theZikaandDenguemosquito) inwaterusingsimplephotocapture. ThepartnershipbetweenColumbiaGlobalCenters|RiodeJaneiroandthetwouniversitiescreatedtheCOPPE-ColumbiaCenterforUrbanSolutionstodevelopsolutionsforurbanproblemsthroughhigh-impactprojects,aswellaspromote technologicaldevelopment and applied research in areas such assustainabledevelopment,bigdataanalysis,internetofthings(IOT),precisionmedicineandothertechnologies.

Oneofourtopthemesin2016wasCreativeWriting.Throughouttheyear,theCenterofferedover10programscoveringsuchtopicsasliterarytranslation, TV writing, the roles of writers in the age of the internet,maternity, womanhood and gender in fiction. Altogether, the programsreachedover480peopledirectly.TheTVwritingprograms(3workshopsand2MasterClasses)alonereachedover240people.

In a recent ranking of The Wall Street Journal/Times HigherEducationCollegeRankings,ColumbiaUniversitywasthehighestrankingIvyLeagueInstitutionand3rdintheoverallranking.Studentoutcomes,resources, environment and engagement are the four categories thatcomprisetheWSJ/THErankings.Columbialeadsinstudent outcomes,measured by post-graduation salaries and graduation rate, as well as inresources,measuredbyacademicspendingandstudent-to-facultyratios.Columbia alsoperformedwell in the areasofenvironment,whichusesmetricssuchasthenumberofinternationalstudentsenrolledandtheracialandethnicdiversityof faculty and students, andengagement,which isbased mostly on results of a student survey that covers topics such asteaching and interactions with faculty and other students and whetherstudentswouldrecommendtheirschool.
