School Vision

Every student equipped to thrive.

School Motto Our school motto Aim for Excellence recognises the importance of encouraging each student to always strive to do their best and reach their potential. School Values All members of the school community will act in line with and demonstrate the school’s values: excellence, integrity, perseverance, fairness and respect. School Philosophy Learning Our priority is to develop a strong foundation in education via the basic skills of reading, writing and mathematics and our broader academic programme. We also believe that students should be recognised and encouraged for their diverse talents and be provided with the opportunity to share and extend their special skills. We aim to create opportunities for our children to experience success by providing a broad-based curriculum. Leading We provide an environment where students develop self-respect, confidence and an enthusiastic attitude towards life. We pride ourselves in providing a quality, value-based education programme and aim to develop resilient leaders who understand diversity and lead with intellect and empathy. Life Lifelong education is essential for ongoing personal growth, creativity, resourcefulness, independent thought, and in developing an inquiring mind. We will provide an environment where learning is stimulating, enjoyable and interesting and is undertaken in an atmosphere of mutual respect. Love Family is vital to the overall success of each child’s education, and we gladly welcome parent/caregiver participation in our school’s activities. Our school offers the security of a close working relationship between students, teachers and families. We believe it takes a village to raise a child and we value partnerships beyond the school gate.

Student Attendance The student attendance level achieved was 91% over the year for the compulsory schooling years (PP – 6). Supportive programs were in place to encourage positive school attendance and this included family contact through a SMS service. The school would contact the parents if absences were not explained, and ongoing absences would be followed up with a family meeting with the Principal. School staff encouraged full attendance through the provision of a very engaging school environment.

The school strength was in writing and this was significant in Grades 3&5. The Grade 3 students achievement was one of the highest in the like school cohort. The school should celebrate the achievement in writing and the writing associated skills. In 2016 the school offered accelerated learning options for gifted and talented students and specialized gifted and talented programs for children in Grades 3-6. For children of special needs, teachers established Individual Learning Plans to support learning and

specialized programs particularly focused on developing the skills of children in Grades 1-3. Strong partnerships between school and home were established and regular student support meetings were offered each term in addition to the parent teacher interviews and formalized reports. Teachers report that these additional partnerships had a positive impact on student learning. Areas for Improvement - What we may improve The school will monitor maths development in the school especially in Grades 3-5. The school does note that this is the first year that a maths deficit was evident and due to small cohort numbers this may be a cohort anomaly. Teachers will continue to review the school curriculum and monitor school performance in this area. In 2017 the school has introduced Mathletics as a mechanism to promote maths work at home and school and will reward student achievement with certificates at the school assembly. Celebrations - What we are doing well The Pioneer Village School staff worked hard to provide the community with events that celebrated learning and events included an annual friendship week and friendship breakfast for the school community, orientation events, teacher-interview sessions with parents and students, carols evening, end of year award presentation and graduation, buddy system across all grades, multicultural day, book week dress up day and book week associated activities, school annual, school camp for Grade 6 graduating class and P&F school social functions. In line with the school values the students were extensively involved in the performing arts, and students participated in the school performance, dance program and classroom music program. The school swimming program was a highlight, as well as other sporting activities such as the school cross country and athletic sports. Parents were significant partners at many of these events and supported student educational development.

Pioneer Village School staff aimed to provide a positive environment for learning and focused on sound transitions across the school. We offered a transition program for children moving from kindergarten to pre-primary. School sessions for preschooler families were held to help families familiarize themselves with the school environment. As part of this process staff coached parents on what to expect when their child begins school. The early years’ staff worked diligently to meet the high standards of operation and the standards of the National Quality Framework. This year we also made significant improvements in our gifted and talent program and special education delivery. We developed stronger relationships with Australian Independent Schools Western Australian (AISWA) and utilized a shared psychology service regularly. The school staff worked with the school community to improve outcomes by revising policy engaged and engaged in future planning. As a community we updated many of

the school policies. The Board and school staff completed a Strategic Plan for 2016 - 2020. Areas for Improvement - What we may improve At Pioneer Village in 2017 we aim to address the mechanisms for school feedback. We would like to improve the number of families that contribute to annual surveys. To date we have experienced a low rate of return from whole of school family feedback information. The Board will address family feedback as a priority in the new-year. Celebrations - What we are doing well The school completed many tasks to maintain the school facilities. The major works completed included the painting of many of our classrooms and refurbishment of the Grade 4&5 classroom. We completed grounds work to stop water flow onto the adventure playground, and fixed the run off. We improved safety by replacing all door handles with fire safe levers. We improved our play facilities with nature play ideas including the development of the chess set and “horses”. We acknowledge the generous support of the school P&F, families and local business who have supplied significant financial and human support to these projects. We relocated many of the rooms and services to enhance school development which included moving many classes and the library to improve the village community feel. We provided for a specialist Science room, in line with national science agenda to create a platform upon which to teach STEM (Science Technology Energy and Maths) program in the coming years. This reorganisation enabled the centralisation of resources to better support the teaching across the school. We also received a small grant to facilitate science learning and provided after school classes during the school year. Our budget has been well managed to provide for student learning and is prioritized in line with the school values and maintenance of infrastructure. Parent Satisfaction Summary & School Staff Survey Parent satisfaction with the school has been completed by the Board and feedback was valued and appreciated. Despite a low return rate the community reported positive comments about the school and the provision of education at Pioneer Village. The school have responded throughout the year to parent and staff feedback and have made changes to school programs and have enhanced resources to meet community needs. The school student survey was initiated 2016 and from the feedback it is evident the students feel a strong sense of belonging within Pioneer Village School.

Areas for Improvement - What we may improve In the future we will continue to address classroom facilities with ongoing maintenance. We have very keen families in the community supporting nature play and we will aim to develop greater play spaces for children that incorporate this idea of natural playgrounds. The school has raised funds in 2016 to support development in this area in 2017 and this project has the support of the P&F.
