Dear Members and Friends,

This issue of Business Connections is quite special. In it we

pay tribute to the Father of Uzbekistan, the late President,

Islom Karimov, while also congratulating both his succes-

sor, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat

Mirziyoyev, and the newly elected President of the United

States, Mr. Donald J. Trump.

We also celebrate two anniversaries, the twenty-fifth of

Uzbekistan's independence, and the twentieth of AmCham's

establishment.

The New Year presents a wide array of challenges which we

hope will also include many new business opportunities.

AmCham Uzbekistan wishes to extend its congratulations to President Donald Trump who is inaugurated as forty-fifth president of the United States of America.

After a long and arduous journey President Trump suc-ceeded in overcoming the many obstacles and challeng-es that a political outsider might be expected to encoun-ter, but his message was clear, and the American public re-sponded. President Trump faces a complicated agenda of both domestic and international issues that will require his

full attention, but we are confident that he will be success-ful. President Trump is a business person and we are con-fident that he will bring his extensive skills and contacts to bear in dealing with these important matters as well as oth-ers which might arise.

We as AmCham extend our warmest greetings and pledge our support to continue developing the busi-ness ties that unite the United States of America and the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Congratulations and Our Warmest Greetings

First President of AmCham Uzbekistan, Mr. robert l. HortonMy years in Uzbekistan were some of the most rewarding years of my career and I can give AmCham Uzbekistan much of the credit for it being such a positive experience. You might ask,

"was business good and everything that I had hoped for?" The answer would be "No", it was difficult but there were also ma-ny positive aspects. Convertibility was always an issue and our company, Uz-Texaco, was never what it could have been with operations in a free economy, but we survived and it was a re-warding experience because of AmCham. AmCham provid-ed a forum for discussion with international businesses op-erating in similar difficulties, as well as a social environment balance that gave us wonderful friends and contacts need-ed, with both a local and expat perspectives.

I congratulate AmCham Uzbekistan on celebration of its 20th year of service to its members. We miss you and will always appreciate all that you do. Sincerely,

Robert L. Horton

Dear Members of the AmCham Family,

The U. S. Embassy congratulates the American Chamber of Commerce in Uzbekistan on its 20th anniversary! The Embassy has been a proud supporter and partner with AmCham over these past two decades. AmCham is a key fo-rum for Uzbekistan’s business commu-nity and an important avenue for the Embassy to interact with the private sector. AmCham members play a vi-tal role in helping the Embassy under-stand the nuances of Uzbekistan’s busi-ness landscape, and we have teamed up with AmCham on numerous initia-tives over the years—from ambassado-rial outreach events to visits of high-lev-el U. S. government officials. The past

year saw the Embassy, in coordination with AmCham and other partners, or-ganize a successful, first-of-its-kind gov-ernment-business roundtable, which brought more than 30 representatives from U. S. companies to Uzbekistan to explore business opportunities.

Such events play a fundamental role in enabling the Embassy to fur-ther its commitment to fostering op-portunities for American businesses abroad. Without the strong relationship we enjoy with AmCham, such efforts would be impossible. We are therefore proud and honored that, in 2015, the Embassy was invited to occupy a seat on AmCham’s board of directors, bring-ing that relationship even closer.

Of course, our joint activities with AmCham are an embodiment of

the broader work the Embassy un-dertakes day in and day out to fos-ter social and economic growth in Uzbekistan. Helping others is a funda-mental aspect of our activities here.

Our Public Affairs Section is active-ly engaged in Uzbekistan and is par-ticularly committed to outreach in the areas of cultural preservation, ed-ucational exchanges, and English lan-guage learning. Since 2001, the U. S. Embassy has preserved ten cultur-al sites throughout Uzbekistan with an investment of over $300,000 through the U. S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation, including the

“Painting of the Ambassadors,” which is located in the Afrosiab museum in Samarkand, and over 700 items in the Ark of Bukhara. We are currently work-ing with the Uzbek government to pro-vide training on cultural preservation and to determine what might be ap-propriate preservation sites for 2017.

The Fulbright program, one of the State Department’s flagship ex-change programs, has been active in Uzbekistan since 1992. The pro-gram offers grants to Uzbek students to study at the graduate level in the United States, and to U. S. students and scholars pursuing independent research and teaching assignments

in Uzbek. Since its inception, over 170 Uzbek and 74 U. S. students have been selected for the program.

In December 2012, former Pre-si dent Karimov issued decree 1825, man dating English language instruc-tion to begin in the first grade. To this end, we have increased the number of English Language Fellows and Spe-cialists across Uzbekistan. We have al-so created new English Access Micro-scholarship Programs, which provide English language skills to students through after-school classes and ses-sions, in order to help the government achieve this goal.

The Embassy also holds six pub-lic events each week for Uzbek stu-dents: Chai Chat, Conversation Club, Education Advising and three English language lessons.

Economic partnership is also es-sential to the U. S.—Uzbek relationship, and the U. S. Agency for International Deve lopment (USAID) has played a pivotal role in promoting economic prosperity.

The U. S. government, through USAID, is providing training and fa-cilitating events and exchanges that help increase regional trade and con-nectivity in Uzbekistan. Our regional trade activities, like business-to-busi-

ness trade forums and workshops for small businesses, have helped facil-itate hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of signed letters of intent to do business and are directly contributing to regional economic connectivity.

USAID’s Agricultural Value Chains (AVC) program is a prime example of such an initiative. Launched in Sep-tember 2016, this five-year, $14 mil-lion program is designed to improve the Uzbek horticultural sector through effective techniques aimed at increas-ing fruit yield and quality. The new pro-gram, which targets stone fruits, mel-ons, vegetables and grapes and cov-ers 12 provinces in 33 districts across Uzbekistan, will also create new job opportunities and improve income throughout the local community.

In closing, we thank AmCham for the vital role it plays in Uzbekistan and for its enduring friendship with the U. S. Embassy. As U. S. firms adapt to a changing environment in Uzbekistan, one constant is the strong support you can expect from your colleagues in the Embassy. We look forward to many more years of fruitful and dy-namic collaboration.

Sincerely, Pamela L. Spratlen U. S. Ambassador to Uzbekistan

our MeMbers: business is noT jusT abouT THe Money

nesTlé anD CreaTing sHareD value ConCepTNestlé is a shared-value pioneer, lead-ing the way in the concept’s develop-ment from its earliest stages. Nestlé Company is determined to do busi-ness in ways that deliver both long-term shareholder value and provide the greatest benefit to society. Nestlé’s ap-proach begins with the understanding that for its business to prosper over the long-term, the communities it serves must also prosper.

As the world’s leading nutrition, health and wellness company, Nestlé is best positioned to create shared value in the following areas:

nestlé and farming development in uzbekistanEvery year, the Nestlé factory in Na man-gan processes thousands tons of milk, but it has the capacity to produce much more. Nestlé supports the development of farming in Uzbekistan by producing

dairy products from large farms, as well as from individual farmers.

Nestlé requires that its dairy prod-ucts be of the highest quality and com-ply with all required health standards. Nestlé is the primary, if not the single largest, consumer of milk in the region. All farms of the Fergana valley follow ex-tremely high sanitary requirements. The majority of these are equipped with pri-vate laboratories which conduct prima-ry tests for fermentation and fat. Milk from vaccinated cows must be quar-antined for two to three weeks until the medicine completely leaves the ani-mal. The farms cooperating with Nestlé Uzbekistan strictly maintain this quar-antine. If antibiotics are found in the milk, the entire batch is returned. Nestlé co-operates only with suppliers who abide by these strict standards.

In accordance with the concept of “Creating Shared Value” Nestlé al-so contributes to the development of animal husbandry in the country, pro-

moting best practices according to the latest industry standards. Nestlé partners with hundreds of farms, whose staff are constantly monitor-ing the quality of feed, care for animals, etc. Nestlé Uzbekistan assists farmers by providing consulting services, train-ing of agro-veterinary practices, and other nuances of the industry.

The collaboration of Nestlé Uz be-ki stan with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) deserves special mention. This partnership began as part of ongoing activities in the field of supply-chain development. During this time, IFC experts assisted in in-creasing the volume and improving the quality of veterinary services pro-vided by Nestlé suppliers.

lessons” which was developed in co-operation with the Ministry of Public Education and aimed at promoting healthy food culture as an important component of a healthy lifestyle. By embracing the concept of Health and Wellness, Nestlé products are not just tasty, but also healthy—the exact ap-proach to nutrition being taken as the basis for creating educational materials.

Teachers will introduce this program to second-graders during in class time, and during school activities. The pur-pose of this training course is to devel-op a healthy food culture, necessary for a healthy lifestyle. Moreover, this curric-ulum contains information about nat-ural history, botany and etiquette. The

“Healthy Nutrition lessons” program corresponds directly to the concept of Health and Wellness.

The Healthy Kids Program in Uz be-ki stan has already been distribu ted to more than 11 thousand students. More-over, we have successfully incor po rated as a part of “Project Wet” a Heal thy Hyd-ration Module into the “Heal thy Kids” program book. Addi tio nal ly, the Healthy Kids Program is an important compo-nent of the Creating Shared Value con-cept, as its objective is to raise nutrition and health awareness and promote physical activity among school-age chil-dren all over Uzbekistan.

In the previous year, 6000 text-books and manuals for teachers have already been printed and distribut-ed to school students in Tashkent

City and Namangan region. Tashkent: 4500 text books in both Russian and Uz bek languages. Namangan: 1500 text books in Uzbek language.

This year, 5000 new textbooks and manuals for teachers with improved Healthy Hydration topics have already been printed and given to school stu-dents of such regions as Nukus, Mangit and Bukhara. Nukus: 1000 textbooks in Russian language. Mangit: 1500 text-books in Uzbek language. Bukhara: 2500 textbooks in both Russian and Uzbek languages.

Nestlé Uzbekistan has in total pro-vided 11 thousand students with text-books in more than 60 schools across the country. We are planning for six more participating regions during the course of this year, reaching an addi-tional 10,000 students.

without business support. Therefore, our sincere desire is to help make this world better through tangible social programs and projects.

One of our social projects is sup-porting the Tashkent Federation of Den-To FUDOKAN Karate-Do.

The federation was founded by Rustam Bekmuratov (black belt, 3rd dan) and officially registered by the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Uzbekistan on the 23 May 2003. The Federation pays special attention to the fact that karate is not only sport, but a lifestyle for those who have cho-sen «The way of the heavenly hand».

For more than five years BAKER TILLY Uzbekistan has been render-ing not only material assistance (hel-mets, gloves, bags for training, etc.), but also pro bono consulting support in legal aspects of the activities of the Federation. We actively participate in development of organizational and administrative aspects, acting as ad-visers and organizers of meetings with embassies of various countries, inter-national organizations, and large com-panies, to attract additional support.

Since 2015, students of the Fe de-ra tion have benefited from the oppor-tunity to study and undergo training un-der the guidance of Yamashita Hi deya-si- sensei (3rd dan), a Japanese mas-ter of Godzyuru karate-do, who sha-res not only techniques of karate, but also the true traditions of Japa ne se martial arts and culture. His arrival and

work in Uzbekistan became pos sible thanks to the support of the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and BAKER TILLY Uzbekistan.

In December, 2015, students and coaches of the Tashkent Federation took part in the World Cup of Den-To FUDOK AN Karate-Do, and the International tournament of Godzyuru karate-do, organized by the United World Karate Federation (UWKF) in Belgrade, Serbia. In those competi-tions eight students of the Federation won 13 medals, including 4 gold, 3 sil-ver and 6 bronze.

These accomplishments of the Ta s h ke nt Fe d e r at i o n of D e n -To FUDOKAN Karate-Do are only the be-ginning. An increasing number of com-mitted students continue to work and train every day to further the rich and noble tradition of karate in Uzbekistan.

Presently, more than 600  stu-dents undergo regular training in 15 do-jos (gyms) of the Federation at high schools throughout the city. The na-tional team of the Federation, con-sisting of 50 students and 10 coach-es, have participated in seminars and undergone belt certifications by Soke Ilya Jörg (10th dan), the founder of the traditional Fudokan karate and CEO of the World Fudokan Karate Federation.

Support to the Tahskent Fede-ra tion is just one example of how BAKER TILLY Uzbekistan recogniz-es the importance of social prog-rams and projects. BAKER TILLY Uz-

be ki stan is dedicated to creating an environment of equal opportunity and providing hope for a happy fu-ture, and a chance for young students of Tashkent Federation of Den-To FUDOKAN Karate-Do to become full-fledged members of our society.

boXing book2016 marked the 100th anniversary of the arrival of professional American boxer Sydney Jackson in Tashkent. He traveled to the Russian Empire during the First World War, which was followed by several rebellions, revolutions, and Civil War. He educated many outstanding boxers and coaches who in their turn raised the next generations of talented Uzbek sportsmen. In the years which followed, Uzbek boxers had the upper hand in the All-Union and international compe-titions, and one of them, Rufat Riskiev, became World Champion in 1974.

2016 was also the fiftieth anniver-sary of Sydney Jackson’s passing, but his devotees and followers continued developing the Uzbek boxing school he founded. Since 1966, the interna-tional boxing tournaments devoted to Jackson’s memory are held on an annu-al basis. In 2016, as a commemoration of these remarkable dates, the Uzbek boxing team won three gold, four sil-ver, and four bronze medals at the

Monthly Meeting on november 24, 2016His Excellency Neithart Höfer-Wissing, Ambassador E x traordinar y and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Germany to Uzbekistan was the honorary speaker at the November Monthly Meeting.

Introductory remarks were made by Hugo Minderhoud, AmCham Trea-su rer, member of the Board of Di rec-tors, and Honorary Consul of the King-dom of the Netherlands and Kingdom of Belgium.

His Excellency Neithart Höfer-Wis-sing, gave an extensive review of the business climate and economic situ-ation in Germany, as well as an over-view of present ties and options for the future development of bilater-al cooperation between Uzbekistan and Germany.

The question “Why do business with Germany?” was thoroughly cov-ered. Germany is the fourth largest

economy, third largest exporter, and third largest importer in the world. Germany is also Europe’s largest mar-ket with 21% of EU GDP. The main rea-sons for Germany’s economic suc-cesses are it's large number of small and medium sized enterprises, as well as extensive investment in re-search and development (ranked 4th worldwide), which annually contrib-utes 80 billion Euros. tion, and many other positive aspects of a healthy investment climate, which were all discussed in the presenta-tion by His Excellency Neithart Höfer-Wissing.

One of the problems reviewed is Germany’s excessive energy con-sumption. A top priority is to cut energy consumption by half while at the same time maintaining sol-id economic growth. Germany also has a goal to cut CO2 emissions by 80% and to increase the share of re-newable energy to 60% of total ener-gy consumption.

Renewable energy is one of the many areas of Uzbek-German coop-

eration. There are several wind and solar energy projects in Uzbekistan which are being implemented in co-operation with German partners.

His Excellency Neithar t Höfer-Wissing expects that the business relations between Uzbekistan and Germany will continue to grow. As of today there are 60 organizations with German interests in Uzbekistan. These include the German-Uzbek Business Council, German Trade a n d I nv e s t m e n t C h a m b e r, a n d German Chamber of Commerce, all which support and promote fur-ther business ties between Germany and Uzbekistan. There is also the

M anager Training Programme of the German Federal Ministr y for Economic Affairs and Energy under which Uzbek managers have visited Germany. Every year about 1500 stu-dent s travel from Uzbekist an to study in German universities.
