Effective leadership delegates wisely, allowing others to get things done. Effective leadership sets goals, communicates, and gives recognition, always looking for lasting solutions. The 2016-2017 Academic year has set the stage for transformative change at UB. There are great expectations.

I commend the administrative and academic leaders within the University for the tremendous team spirit amidst this tide of change. We are grateful to all the University partners for the patience, confidence and support given. Future generations will be proud.

The Board of Trustees, Management, Faculty, Staff and Students would like to acknowledge Mr. Alan Slusher for the commitment, personal investment and contributions he brought to the role of President over his tenure (2014-2017); and to thank him for his gracious support during the transition.

Teaching & Learning

The University of Belize, in its 2016-2017 academic year, identified key levers to develop a stronger and more-distinctive profile for its Teaching and Learning framework. The result comprised three components:

• Engaged with Partners in support of teaching and learning for work-integrated learning experiences, internships and mobility for students

• Conducted community outreach efforts thatcontributed to public conversations

• Expanded key programs across the University’s campuses and through the University’s online platform

Research & Innovation

Research and publication are important for a university’s growth and for nation building. During the 2016-2017 academic year, the University of Belize strived to develop an academic environment encouraging research to teaching, knowledge creation and innovation. This year the University of Belize:

• Engaged research partners to strengthen research performance and impact at institutional and individual researcher levels

• Contributed to Belize’s knowledge and advancement with research publications on key research areas

Faculty of Management and Social Sciences

• Partnership with UWI - Cavehill to develop MBA Program

• Contributed to the Development of Belize’s National Entrepreneurship Framework

• EU Sugar Belt Project - Expanding Access, Assuring Quality, Ensuring Relevance: Strengthening Early Childhood and Secondary Education in Northern Belize

• Expanded Associate of Early Childhood Education to the Belize City & Punta GordaCampuses.

Faculty of Nursing, Allied Health and Social Work

• Development of Bachelor’s in Pharmacy & Bachelor in Medical Laboratory Science

• Establishment of Belize Association of Medical Laboratory Professionals

• FNAHSW and Ministry of Health Partnership: Quality Improvement Framework

Faculty of Science & Technology

• Engineering Students won the XVIII Concursode Diseño y Construccion de ModelosEstructurales V Fase Internacional(XVIII Competition of Design and Construction of Structural Models V International Phase) in Chetumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico.

• Developed Management Plan for the Belize River Water Shed

• Partnership with Republic of Korea for the establishment of a Modern School of Engineering

Regionalization of UB

UB Participated in the Second Binational Seminar at the Universidad de Quintana Roo(UQROO).

Environmental Research Institute

• Implemented Bird Monitoring Project (UB –American Bird Conservancy)

• Implemented Panthera Poject (UB – Panthera)

• Implemented Darwin Sustainable Forestry Project (UB, Oxford University & Darwin Initiative)

Student Experience

• Second Place – Intramural in La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge

• ATLIB Champions – UB Lady Black Jaguars: Football and Basketball

• 598 Students participated in internship programs

• 12 Students participated in Student Exchange Programs i.e. to USA, Canada and Spain

Infrastructure Development

• Pavement of Roads and Parking Lots in Belmopan Campus

• Renovation of Audio-Visual Room in Belize City (FMSS)

• Painting of Buildings in Belmopan and Belize City Campuses

• Expansion of Medical Laboratory, PC Lab and Jaguar Student lab

Taking Care of our Faculty & Staff

Goals for this year included: Revising current performance management tools, Faculty Contracts, and the development of a Contributory Pension Plan. The HR Director continued to offer staff professional development opportunities by implementing a Confidentiality Pledge, sponsoring a faculty and staff Sports Day and encouraging community volunteerism.

Financial Statement

In the 2017-2018 academic year, UB strived to break even from a loss position - to become more efficient, to increase productivity and to reduce waste. The chart shows the University’s Financial Position for 2016-2017.

“A vision for this University should not be constrained, as a vision is a destination, and great Universities were built through hundreds of years of dedicated, steady, work. We have a long journey ahead that will be sometimes marred by challenges but then that is the role of leadership – to set the course and steer the ship to its port of destination through heady, rocky and calm waters.”
