We provide a year-round, high-quality Early Learning and kindergarten program for 2 to 6-year-old children whose families are living at or below the poverty level and need child care due to work, school or disability. We offer an extended learning program for school- age siblings during summer and holiday vacations. Our community is international. We explore our ethnic diversity and recognize cultural competency as essential to preparing children to be leaders. A comprehensive wellness program includes annual dental, hearing, vision, and speech assessments for early diagnosis of physical or developmental concerns. Individual speech therapy and small group support for language development is offered on-site.

Two home cooked meals and a snack ensure that children meet their daily nutritional requirements while enjoying foods from our many different cultures. While instruction occurs in English, the following 11 other languages are spoken by the children and at least one staff person at the Day Home: Amharic, Arabic, Cambodian, Cantonese, English, French, Mandarin, Mongolian, Portuguese, Spanish, Tigrinya, and Vietnamese.

The Day Home at a GlanceDearest Friends, The Day Home remains as committed as ever to our mission of preparing children and families to live independent, meaningful lives. The staff is honored to support parents and guardians as they work towards a better quality of life, and we are privileged to care for our community’s youngest and most vulnerable children.

A quality early childhood education sparks a child’s curiosity, builds their knowledge about self and world, teaches fundamentals of inquiry, reading and writing, as well as nurtures their physical and mental health.

Every child deserves this opportunity to develop the strongest possible foundation to fulfill their greatest potential in intellect, character, productivity, relationships, and realization of their unique purpose from their earliest years.

Time-honored humanitarian and activist, Mahatma Gandhi, said “If we could change our-selves, the tendencies in the world would also change.” As I watch our little ones act with the strength, intelligence, and compassion they have developed here, I believe they are more capable of leading happy, healthy lives and creating a better world for everyone’s benefit because of their start at the Day Home.

We cannot do this work alone and are thankful for the role you play in keeping Saint Vincent’s Day Home strong and able to continue meeting the many challenges our families and children face.

Yours in service,

Kathleen Shaheed Interim Executive Director

The Year in Review 2015

A Solution for Families Generations of Success

Third generation Day Home student, Makalah, enjoyslunch with her friends.

Remembering her first visit, Sheila says,

“The woman at the front desk was so warm and had compassion for my situation.” J’Grace enrolled right away.

Sheila and J’Grace headed home after a long day.

Jermel credits the Day Home with help-ing her develop the self-awareness and tenacity to pursue a law degree and balance the demands of a busy career and motherhood.

After the local Early Head Start closed, Sheila Price didn’t know who would keep her granddaughter, J’Grace Turner, while she worked fulltime. As family breadwinner, she needed to keep her cashier position at Jetro Cash & Carry in Oakland and didn’t have much time to look around for childcare that she could afford. Fortunately, a friend told her about the Day Home. Remembering her first visit, Sheila says, “The woman at the front desk was so warm and had compassion for my situation.” J’Grace enrolled right away. Over a year later, J’Grace is almost four years old and beaming with self-confidence. Sheila was so moved by J’Grace’s social development that she wrote an open letter to the teachers thanking them for their guidance and warmth in helping J’Grace develop her independence, communication, and manners. Asked to describe the Day Home, Sheila statedsimply,

“It’s Family.”

Contra Costa Deputy Public Defender, Jermel Thomas came to the Day Home with her two siblings in the early 1980s while living with her aunt. Growing up in nearby public housing, she never imagined she would someday become an attorney. Jermel believes the loving interaction she had with her Day Home teachers each day helped her build a positive foundation for her education and adult life. She cherishes her childhood experiences here and remembers the joy of tending the garden, making flower bracelets at recess, and caring for Sister Adrienne’s many bunnies, guinea pigs and snakes. Her Aunt Lavella credits the support she received with allowing her to successfully take on the responsibility of raising three nieces and nephews on her own. Lavella says, “The Day Home was a lifesaver.” In fact, she recalls, “The children couldn’t wait to get there, and they never wanted to leave!” Two more generations followed Jermel to the Day Home. Her nieces and nephews, now successful young professionals, also attended the Day Home. Her sister’s 3-year-old foster child, Makalah, enrolled this year and is thriving. While her start may have been rocky, Jermel credits the Day Home with helping her de-velop the self-awareness and tenacity to pursue a law degree and balance the demands of a busy career and motherhood.

“The children couldn’t wait to get there, and they never wanted to leave!”

Financial Report

95% of children live in Oakland and 5% from other East Bay cities

72% of parents worked full-time; 20% of parents were students or seeking employment and 5% were on disability.

3% of children were in foster care programs.

The 2015-16 fiscal year brought an unexpected increase in California’s investment in early childhood education. With this modest rise in government contract revenue, the Day Home closed the year with a surplus. This signals that the austerity we adopted in response to the 2008 recession can give way to a conservative, but expansive, approach to our programs; adding additional services, enrichment opportunities, and life experiences our children and families need to thrive.

Private support will always play a crucial role in the Day Home’s ability to pursue its long-term mission. As stewards of your generous support, we are excited to plan ahead for new opportunities while managing a reserve for unanticipated expenses and the ever-present potential for reduced government funding.
