Flowers Before Bread

“I am so grateful that our dear friend has seen her 100th! I’ve been thinking of the harvest that Ijust reaped – all from responding to an ad. What did I reap? 15 years of being in the company ofa sweet little woman who, to my knowledge, has never uttered a complaining word!! Dear Friends:

We frequently get ‘thank you’ notes and calls from our oldfriends: we have shared many of them with you over theyears. But notes like the one above are a rare treat. Theyspeak of the second half of our mission: to provideopportunities for volunteers to join with elders in thecelebration of life.

Over thirty-five years ago our Boston doors opened andwe began the wonderful work of bringing volunteers likeShirley together with lonely and isolated elderly womenand men. Some say that we are creating friendships, but Irather think of it as opening doors – providingopportunities for people to welcome others into their lives. This is what happens every day at Little Brothers-Friendsof the Elderly: doors are opened, companionship isoffered, service is given – lives are made better.

Last year we saw 1,690 volunteers knock on doors andgive 31,770 hours of friendship and service to our oldfriends. You will see how these hours were spent andglimpse the faces of some of the 839 elderly women andmen who welcomed us into their lives.

I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to you for your trustand faithful support of our work. I sincerely hope that these slidesbring a smile to your face, and that they serve as proof of thevalue of your contributions. In truth, so very many doors wouldremain closed were it not for your support.

Why I SupportLittle Brothers

I first heard about Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly as I happened upon a Yard Sale they were hosting at theirSouth End facility on Columbus Ave in 1984. I found thefolks there to be very charming and sweet, and there was a "funkiness" to the operation at the time. The building wasold and cramped, but people made due - intent on serviceto the elderly.

They had a sign up sheet for volunteers at the Yard Saleand as I love to cook, they put me in the kitchen for theholidays. They eventually connected me with a perfectmatch - a couple who lived just a few doors away fromme: Henry & Mamie.

I was always attuned to older folks and at that time wasvery close to my Grandmother. When I was very young I was brought to a downtrodden ward in a nursing home tosee a relative: the shock of it made an impression on meand made me want to help older folks.

I think the work of Little Brothers is crucial: we live intimes of disparity and of sometimes grinding isolation. In atime when we're made to think we're so connected

through technology, we also yearn for more meaningful, truerconnections - both for volunteers and for isolated elders. As Imentioned above my first match by Little Brothers was avery powerful gift. A particular thrill has been to become afather and to share the experience with my daughters.

Mamie and Henry were dear friends. Henry’s death in 1990was very sad but I stayed close with Mamie through theyears, and am very glad that she got to know my children. When Mamie moved into a nursing home we continued tobe constant companions to her. We lost a dear member ofour family when she passed away in 2004.

From my own experience, I think the relationships and bondsthat result from the holiday events are of tremendous value:it's great to be there for Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving. But if the match of volunteer and elder really takes hold andan ongoing, meaningful relationship comes to be, well that'san incredibly powerful gift.

Every year our programs are supported with in-kind gifts of

supplies, foods, event space, and staff. While we can not list everyone here wedo want to acknowledge some of these
