2014—year in review

Mission StatementThe mission of Squam Lakes Natural

Science Center is to advance understanding of ecology by exploring

New Hampshire’s natural world.Dave MartinChair, Board of Trustees

Iain MacLeodExecutive Director

It was a record setting year at the Science Center. More visitors passed through our gates than ever before. One of the big new attractions was the Coyote Exhibit which opened on May 1. The male Coyote has been with us for a few years and is leash-trained and has been used in programs. Being well socialized to people – particularly children – he loves his newfound role and is very outgoing. His posturing in front of the glass as he sometimes greets, sometimes “threatens” the visitor is a living example of Coyote social behavior and display.

The new Wood Energy exhibit was also very popular. Our expert interpretive exhibit design team managed to make what on the face of it might seem like a dry topic into a fun interactive learning experience. We particularly like the “how many pieces of bread can be toasted with the energy stored in a one pound block of maple” method of interpreting a BTU – all fun and clever . . . and who knew you could buy foam toast – 76 pieces no less.

Out on the lake our cruise business had another excellent year. The Bald Eagle pair built a new nest on Long Island and managed to fledge three eaglets once again (over achievers!). One eaglet fractured a leg during what was probably a clumsy landing attempt and was rehabilitated and released back to the nest area in October. Our cooperative Loon Tours with our good friends at the Loon Preservation Committee were hugely successful once again – a great example of cooperation for mutual benefit.

Another example of good partnering was between the Hobo Railroad in Lincoln and the Science Center for the “Nature by Rail” series, which was recognized by NH Magazine for the 2014 Best of NH awards as an Editor’s Pick for “Best Business Partnership in a Recreational Category.” The Science Center also received a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence Award for 2014, which honors hospitality excellence that consistently achieves outstanding traveler reviews on TripAdvisor. We were selected by the readers of Parenting New Hampshire magazine as a “Family Favorite” award recipient for Favorite Environmental and Educational Center.

Our Osprey Tracking project continued to grow and new grants allowed us to satellite tag two more Ospreys and continue to follow birds tagged in previous years. We received a grant from the 3M Eco Grant program, which will allow us to create a multi-state network from New Hampshire to Florida with nature centers and schools from each state participating. More on that in the 2015 report.

Finally, as if all that wasn’t enough, our Nature Matters Capital Campaign neared its $4 million goal. We were within just a few thousand dollars by the end of the year . . . and wrapped it up in May 2015. We will share a final Nature Matters report with you next year. Thank you to all of you who contributed to the campaign and to the Science Center in so many ways throughout the year.

You make all our successes possible.

Thanks,

Squam Lakes Natural Science Center

AudienceAudience can mean many different things. It’s clear from these tables of numbers and charts that your donations help us to touch many people in a variety of ways. Whether it’s a member who visits the live animal trail once a week, or a school field trip of first graders who have never seen a live beaver before, or tourists from out of state who enjoy Squam Lake’s unique beauty and wildlife when they take a cruise on Squam Lake, everyone finds a way to learn about and appreciate our natural world.

The annual Parsons Volunteer Recognition Dinner was at Camp Deerwood on September 3, 2014, thanks to generous support from Camp Deerwood, Cross Insurance Agency, and Patty Stewart Associates. Located in the Trailhead Gallery, the Volunteer Appreciation Display “Volunteers Complete the Picture” is updated annually. Volunteers who achieved the 200-hour level in 2013 were: Ellen Edersheim, Dennis Hager, Barb Laverack, Dom Marocco, Irene Marocco, and Joan Martin. Nancy Beck, Nance Ruhm, and Gary Robertson advanced to the 500-hour category and Jim Barry moved to the 2,000-hour level.

The President’s Volunteer Service Award is a national program honoring Americans who inspire others to volunteer through their commitment and example. Iain MacLeod presented the Bronze Service Award for volunteers giving 100 to 249 hours in 2013 to: Nancy Beck, Dot Chekas, Andy Eaton, Dennis Hager, Pat James, David Martin, Susan McKimens, John McRae, Denise Moulis, Nance Ruhm, Judy Sniffen, Carol Stewart, Lea Stewart, and Bruce Whitmore. Volunteers Jim Barry and Gary Robertson received the Silver Service Award for donating between 250 to 499 hours in 2013.

Wood-burning Fuel PlantABOVE: Visitors learned about energy choices at the new Wood Energy Exhibit, which was funded by the Nature Matters Capital Campaign. It contains two GARN boilers that provide heat for the Welcome Center, Trailhead Gallery, including Blue Heron School, Webster Building, and Tamworth Pavilion. The boilers will also heat the Water Matters Pavilion, scheduled to open in 2016.

ABOVE RIGHT: A new Coyote Exhibit was created that features an adult male coyote along with interpretation about coyotes in New Hampshire. Donations from the Hilltop Foundation and Noah Foundation funded the exhibit.

RIGHT: A $33,264 3M Eco Grant was awarded that will enhance Project Osprey Track. The multi-year project uses the tracking of Ospreys with GPS satellites as a teaching tool to foster awareness and understanding of bird migrations. The grant will allow the Science Center to create an eastern flyway network through participating nature centers and schools in 15 states from New Hampshire to Florida through which migrating Ospreys pass on their way to South America. Other funding partners include Eversource (Public Service of New Hampshire), which has helped fund the project since its inception in 2011, Jane B. Cook 1983 Charitable Trust, Meredith Bay Colony Club, and the Science Center’s own Innovative Project Fund.

Highlights for 2014 made possible with your help

ABOVE: The Annual Meeting and Summer Celebration on August 9 was highlighted by a presentation from Dr. Alan Rabinowitz, CEO of Panthera, a nonprofit organization devoted to saving the world’s wild cat species. Dr. Rabinowitz shared his amazing life story and work. These sponsors supported the event: Trintje and Andrew Gnazzo, Fran Mandeville, McLane Law Firm, Noah Foundation, Lea A. Stewart, Christopher P. Williams Architects, and Zoo New England. Cottage Place on Squam Lake, The Common Man Restaurant, Lakes Region Tent & Event, and Tuckerman Brewing gave in kind donations of services. Volunteer Event Committee members Nancy Beck, Andy Eaton, Trintje Gnazzo, and Carol Thompson were led by Chair Lea A. Stewart.

ABOVE: Instructor Keenan Leip and Geocamp participants. A new Guided Discovery internship started in 2014 that provides a college student experience working with children in our summer programs.

ABOVE: Marcia Wilson with a Northern Saw-whet Owl and Eastern Screech-Owl. “Eyes on Owls, held on November 22, was a great success with two sold out showings and delighted audiences. Squam River Landing, Owls Landing Campground, Snowy Owl Inn & Resort, and Owl’s Nest Resort and Golf Club sponsored the visit from Marcia and Mark Wilson.”

ABOVE: MarketPlace Associates of Cambridge, Massachusetts, reviewed Howling Coyote Gift Shop operations and merchandise to identify opportunities for increased sales and service.

Annual Report • Fiscal Year 2014

FinancialSummaryThis year we have continued to summarize our audited financial information to show the impact of the Nature Matters Capital Campaign in 2014 and 2013 as compared to regular operations. Complete Audited Financial Statements and the Form 990 Tax Return may be found on our website, www.nhnature.org, under the tab for Support.

Operationally, (not including depreciation, investments, and capital campaign), the Science Center ended 2014 with a surplus of $12,285 as compared to our budget. We ended 2013 with a deficit of $32,151 as compared to our budget. In 2012 we had a deficit of $12,854.

As you can see from the financial information shown here, during 2014 we increased our total assets and total equity. In addition, operating revenues in 2014 increased significantly more than the increase in expenses. This leaves the Science Center in a healthy financial condition, which is better than the prior year.

If you have questions about the Science Center’s financial information, please contact Finance Director Brian Eaton or Treasurer Ken Evans.

Respectfully submitted,

Kenneth H. Evans Treasurer
