Mission CASA of Oklahoma County provides trained court-appointed volunteers who advocate for

the best interests of abused or neglected children in the juvenile court system.

Dear Friends,

Often we do not have to look far for inspiration. Oprah Winfrey’s words resonate deeply with those of us affiliated with CASA of Oklahoma County (CASAofOKCo). Her words define the very philosophy that you, our advocate volunteers and supporters, express everyday with your investment in our mission.

Many of you have told us that it was a calling that brought you to the Court Appointed Special Advocate Program or you found your calling with us. In truth, I believe it is this calling that underlies the success and thriving nature of our program. Passionate and committed, our advocate volunteers drive over 140,000 miles annually, giving thousands of hours to do what parents either cannot or will not. They bring hope where there is none, help children and families find value and self-worth where it is lost, and offer consistency where there is instability.

Among the largest urban CASA programs in the nation, our staff, board members, advocate volunteers and those of you who so generously and consistently support us are committed to ensuring that each child in need of an advocate has one. Despite court changes, challenges created due to shortfalls of foster homes and efforts imposed on child welfare under the Pinnacle Plan, CASAofOKCo embraced change and accepted our challenges with passion and commitment. With your help, 231 volunteers advocated for 783 children — a 6% increase from FY2013.

Contributing to our success and to provide the best tools for our advocates, we implemented changes that increased volunteer capacity, enhanced our volunteer training and made CASAofOKCo a better place to volunteer. We continued to nurture opportunities for partnerships and strategic collaborations. These enriched relationships have increased our efforts to give volunteers additional options to serve, helped expedite family reunifications, cultivated the upcoming students of social work and bridged efforts systematically.

As the number of children in foster care increased during the year, approximately 70% of children were left without the benefit of a CASA volunteer, leaving much work to be done. The heart of our organization will remain on the needs of the children we serve, however, we hope you will join us as we increase focus on volunteer recruitment and community awareness.

The Problem

One night there was a knock on our door. Mom opened it and people were standing there with papers in their hands. One was a police officer. They talked for a few minutes and Mom started crying. The people took me and my brother aside and said we were going to come with them for a little while. I knew Dad had hurt Mom in the past and Mom would sometimes take things to make her act different and sleep a lot. So I had seen police before, but nothing like this had ever happened.

Our first night, we stayed in a shelter. I knew what it was because I’d heard Mom say she stayed there when she was a girl. She moved a lot when she was younger and never learned how to cook, clean, or keep our electricity on. She didn’t know how to do any of those things.

My brother and I had to stay with two different foster families over three years. Luckily, halfway through our case, my brother and I got a CASA volunteer.

Advocacy

Our CASA volunteer helped Mom learn all the things she never learned when she was a girl. She helped her make a schedule for her day-to-day routine with us so we all knew when dinner was, when to take baths and to check our homework. She helped Mom learn to cook yummy food that she could make after work. Our CASA volunteer also would take Mom and us to the zoo for fun days out together. I was really happy too, because the CASA volunteer got my mom and Grandma to get along again so I could see my dad’s side of the family more often!

My CASA volunteer worked so hard for us. She even helped Dad learn his role in our family even though he doesn’t live with us anymore. She made sure our foster family was supportive of Mom – and I’m so happy we still get to see them because they loved us too!

Success!

Before we had a CASA volunteer, the people Mom would visit in court didn’t think we should live in her house anymore. Our CASA volunteer worked so hard to help make things better, though. So in the end we did get to go back home with our mom! Nowadays we eat at the table like a family! Even though Dad doesn’t live in our house, he still visits us all the time and helps Mom with chores and making meals. Our foster family helps Mom too since we don’t see Mom’s family anymore – we even get to spend time with the foster family when Mom has errands to run or work to do! Our foster family and our CASA volunteer still come to our birthday parties and holidays. And so does Grandma, since she and Mom are friends now! One of the best parts was Thanksgiving – Mom made the whole meal for the first time ever and we ate our first Thanksgiving meal as a family... And our CASA volunteer was right there with us!

Q. Why do you think your CASA volunteer comes to see you?

A. To see how I am and to see if my mom is doing what she is supposed to. She goes to court and tells the judge what I am doing and what I need.

In FY2014 over 12,000 children were in foster care in the state of Oklahoma. 23% were in Oklahoma County.

Q. What do you enjoy most about your CASA volunteer’s visits?

A. I feel like I can talk to her about anything and everything. She makes me feel so special and I can tell she cares about me. I couldn’t ask for another CASA.

FY2014 SERVICE FACTS

We served 341 families — for an average over 2 kids per family/case. Our volunteers drove 140,482 miles. These advocates served 17,139 hours. Our program made 48% of all reported CASA contacts statewide, for a total of 32,325. CASAofOKCo successfully completed and passed quality assurance for National CASA, OK State CASA and VOCA required site visits and/or audits.
