PRESIDENT’S REPORT I would like firstly to thank all of those people who gave a lot of their time during the season as without such assistance there would be no University Cricket Club. Ryan Kiddle as secretary, delegate to CI and chair of selections, Pembo as treasurer and everyone’s first port of call with a question and organ author and Tim Carter as coach and selector. Thanks also to all captains, Mitch Calder as assistant coach and Dr Bob Wheway as vice president and sponsor for our scholarship program. It was another successful year with three team making the semis, unfortunately no silverware. First’s fell short in the semi, thirds lost the toss and got rolled on a wet pitch and the Blues in 4ths lost a close one in the semis. It was the Blues first semis appearance in a long time. Seconds just couldn’t string games together and the Reddies after a post-Christmas resurgence lost the last round and missed the semis. The University club is truly an International club with a large number of players being International students from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Their level of enthusiasm is unbeatable; they are always the first at training and contribute greatly to the club. A lot of the International students skills developed over the season as mostly they had not played on synthetic pitches or turf before and will be an asset for the club over the next few seasons whilst they complete their studies. Congratulations to Taun Stanham for winning the IDCA first grade batting averages and Abhay Singh for taking out the fourth grade bowling averages. Again this season we received no financial assistance from the University nor do we look like ever getting any assistance. There was monies allocated to URAC from SAF funding but after all of our work with the committee set up to administer the funds a decision was made to only fund capital purchases which did not assist any of the sporting clubs. We don’t need capital items we need help with costs such as ground hire that goes back to the University. Our scholarship program has grown, this year we had 11 scholarship holders funded by donations from Dr Bob and a large number of UOWCC Alumni. Without this program a number of students would not be able to afford to play cricket. The club is stronger for this initiative set up many years ago and will continue to grow. Our Master’s team had two games this season, a loss to Keira and win against the Gentlemen of Nowra. Hopefully we will have more games next season as monies from those games goes towards our scholarship program and of course gets past players back in the fold. The club is knocking on the door of winning a trophy and hopefully next season will be our season. To all players I hope you enjoyed the season and will come back next season. Bruce Tosswill President

SECRETARY’S REPORT During the 2014-15 season we looked to build on what was a promising previous 12 months both on and off the field. We hoped to go one better after just missing out on major silverware in all grades in 2013-14 – however disappointingly not all went according to plan at the pointy end of the season. In saying this coach Tim Carter’s ongoing vision, direction and leadership of all players at the club meant that a strong and successful culture continues to develop. Along with his assistant caoch/first grade Captain Mitch Calder they have worked determinedly with the 1st grade squad to build not only their skills but confidence in their ability as a young team. The loss of key players from last year’s team who narrowly were defeated in the final meant a small rebuild was needed, but strong recruitment and retention of other key players meant a successful and committed side was on the paddock week in week out. Uni Cricket managed to secure a place in the finals in 3 out of 4 grades in the 2014-15 season, again narrowly missing out on the Club Championship. Our 3rd Grade side won the T20 final vs Wests in a game in which Peter Somerville was also named Player of the Final. Beaten Semi Finalists in 1st Grade and 3rd Grade along with Minor Premiers in 3rd Grade and Quarter Finalists 4th Grade Blue, all players should be commended in turning around the clubs on field performances throughout the 2014/15 season. Thanks to the Captains for their assistance and patience with selections throughout the year -

Mitch Calder (1st Grade), Michael Williams (2nd Grade), Dan Morris (3rd Grade) Jim Scardanas and Arif Mehmet (4th Grade). I would also like to again thank Bruce Tosswill as President. His leadership and commitment to the club continues to ensure we continue to be in a strong position as we look to the future both on and off the field. Bruce was also awarded life membership at the last AGM for his services to Uni Cricket over many years. Again club stalwart and Treasurer John Pemberton should be commended for the tireless effort he puts in to ensure the ongoing success of the club every year. The club is in a very strong financial position thanks to Pembo and he goes above and beyond his role as Treasurer to ensure the viability of the club. Our Committee again worked tirelessly off the field to ensure we were as successful as possible on the field. Along with re-election of the majority of the Executive at the AGM, various new and existing members put their hands up to support the club – Strategic Planning/Vice President Bob Wheway, Juniors Michael Williams; Team Performance Mitch Calder. These and others also filled a number of other vacant roles – Ryan Kiddle Chairman of Selectors, Kurt Majoor Club Captain, Sandeep Kunder Web Master; Doc Mockler Gear Steward; Sander Kroes Juniors; Lee Sproal Social Committee; and Bruce Tosswill 1961 Club. Many thanks to all for their efforts. Many hands make light work and anyone who has just the smallest amounts of spare time to assist next year – your help would also be appreciated. Thanks also to our Club Patrons, Deputy Vice Chancellor Judy Raper and Vice Chancellor Paul Wellings for their support. Sponsors The Master Builders Club continued to be Major Sponsors of the UWCC – it’s 12th year of sponsorship agreement. As such the weekly post game Call of the Board and Player of the Day presentation together with other functions were held and strongly attended by all at the Builders. Our popular members cash draw ensured a strong weekly attendance also. All UWCC members became members of the IMBC – part of their fees. It is vitally important that all club players support the Builders Club on Saturday evenings. We welcomed on board Dicey Rileys as a Silver sponsor who assisted us in raising funds through monthly Friday meat raffles and their Joker Poker promotions. Thanks again to Tim Carter who at times single-handly kept this alive and assisted in building a positive relationship with their management. Peter Woods from PM Woods & Associates continued as a Silver sponsor. Thanks to Peter for his continued support. We again thank sponsor Fitness 4 All for their 2nd year of support, assisting with the costs of our uniforms. Diskray continued their long standing support of the UWCC. Thanks also to Margaret Pemberton for her support of the 1st grade team every week. Drive Mining (thanks to Miles Brown), MC Scientific, ADC Constructions and Sportspunter.com again supported our scholarships scheme, along with Bob Wheway from the University of Wollongong’s Faculty of Engineering. Bob also continues to pursue any links the club can have with the University. Scholarships / Representatives Corey Suckling, Sharath Shailesh, Taun Stanham, Rob Lane, Kurt Majoor, Vijay Karthik, Rhys Voysey and Vivek Nandigam were awarded Club Scholarships for the season. We also offered an Engineering Scholarship to York Stanham. Thanks to Bob Wheway for his ongoing support of this scholarship. The 1961 Club also awarded scholarships to Amit Balgi and Tarun Muthanna. Rhys Voysey, Taun Stanham, Mitch Calder and Andrew Page were selected in the Cricket Illawarra Representative Squad. General Matters As part of a planned partnership between UOW and the Bradman Foundation, a University XI was again selected to play a Foundation XI at Bradman Oval on 22nd February. A mix of players from all grades travelled by Fitness 4 All’s mini van to Bowral keen to retain the trophy, however they were narrowly defeated by a strong Bradman side – Vijay Karthik was selected as Man of the Match.

Front – Bhanu Ravichandran, Vijay Karthick, John Pemberton, Mitch Calder, Sander Kroes, Arif Mehmet. During the preseason the club played a T20 under lights at UO1 vs the St George Under 21’s in which we were unsuccessful. We also defeated Keira in our only other trial match to retain the Dick Dallas Trophy. The clubs Masters team continued to playing matches on Sundays vs Keira and GONE teams (pictured below). More scheduled matches will be played next season.

John Pemberton was awarded life membership of Cricket Illawarra for his services to cricket in the region. Pembo has not only played the game for countless years but also serviced the game as an administrator for almost as long. See his statistics in later in the report. The 2014/15 season financial accounts show a profit of $2,929.92. This was most unexpected as a deficit of $3000 was in the budget. Factors that lead to the profit include Fitness4all paid for all playing and training shirts ($6500), Dicey Riley raffle income $2760, increased scholarship & sponsorship support from past players & life members, a couple of wet Saturdays in February (a saving of a $1000 per wet Saturday) and most players paid their Saturday night Builders club fines. Many thanks to our scholarship donators (Jeff Carberry, Al Lowis, Mark Dawes, Miles Brown, Bob Wheway, John Blackmore, Mark Mackeras, Steve Maconachie, Simon Irish) and life members Ian Stone, Garry Mockler, Geoff Mettam, Jim Scardanas, Barry Reid, Andy Thorne, Peter Somerville, Lee Sproal, Paul Jones, Richard Baker. We must also thank our sponsors, especially our major sponsor Illawarra Master Builders, as well as Peter Woods & Associates, Diskray, Fitness4all, Bob Wheway, MC Scientific, Sander Kroes, AGC Constructions. Dicey Rileys Hotel and Sports Punter. Without the support of our sponsors and scholarship donators we would struggle to survive. I know it sounds like the proverbial broken record but we did not receive any funding support from UOW and URAC again this season and once again we pay URAC ground hire fees way above the standard Wollongong City Council charges. Considering all UOW students pay a $283 Student Amenities Fees, the lack of UOW support is very disappointing. The committee is committed to keeping costs for UOW students as low as possible. The $200 fee represents a high subsidy by the club as it costs the club about $500 per player each season. Can we

keep doing this? In the short term yes but in the long term it is imperative that the UOW starts to support its Cricket Club. John Pemberton, Honorary Treasurer

CLUB COACH REPORT How do you define success? Last season we were defeated in the Grand Final after finishing last the previous year. We had a successful season. This year we were beaten in the semi-final with the consensus being that we played more consistently throughout 2014/15. I think success can be defined as positive progress which I think we have made. I also think that in the last two seasons, we as a cricket club have been very successful. All but second grade made the finals this season, which meant that we were in very good shape, vying for the Club Championship. Unfortunately no team made the Grand Final. Our playing numbers overall were very good and the mix of multiculturalism throughout the club was a very positive thing for UOW cricket and the University in general. This season we had five players represent Cricket Illawarra. It is a credit to those players that they have been performing well and been offered the opportunity to play at a higher level. As I am sure all of those players are aware, it is a great honour to play representative cricket and be given the opportunity to apply their craft against better players, which can only improve their game. I hope they can continue their fine form at both club and rep level. At club level we had some excellent performances with the ball however our batting let us down at times. To give you an example, in first grade, there were eleven (11) half centuries made and only one was converted. This conversion rate, or lack of it, is the difference between finishing fourth or first on the ladder and improving the win-loss ratio. The bowling however was excellent. We welcomed Tarun Muthanna to the club this year and his experience playing in Sydney showed every time rolled his arm over. He might not have got as many wickets (15) as he would have liked but on numerous occasions he bowled maiden after maiden and built so much pressure that the batsman would eventually get himself out. Rhys Voysey had another fine year with the taking 36 wickets with the best figures of 5/4. Murray Crowe, also a new player to the club this season took 21 wickets with best figures of 4/69. Simon Irish was next best in the wickets with 18 followed by Vijay Karthik on 16. There is no doubt, however, our inability to convert starts into big scores cost us numerous opportunities to win games. I hope as a batting group we can continue to build on this and convert at least 50% of our half centuries next season. Off the field the club had a solid year. It is with great appreciation and thanks that I mention the work of John Pemberton and Ryan Kiddle. Without these two club people, my job would be so much harder and the club certainly wouldn’t be in the position it is in today, if it wasn’t for John and Ryan, so thank you for all your hard work and dedication. It doesn’t go unnoticed. Finally, I would like to wish Mitch Calder all the best with his new plans in Darwin. Mitch has been my Assistant Coach for two years now and has carried out this position with great distinction. He has been a fantastic leader on and off the field. We have had many disagreements over selection, training and tactics but we have both done so with the best interests of the club at heart. Mitch is a fantastic bloke and I am sure that he will be successful where ever cricket and life may take him. Bring on 2015/16 and another exciting and challenging summer! Tim Carter

1ST GRADE REPORT The Flagship's season of 2014/15 when I look back and reflect upon it was one of the more complete seasons we've had in a number of years, albeit finishing the season in the semi-finals. Across the season as a whole, we were much more consistent than in previous years, with a number of players putting their hands up with some big performances that they hadn't previously done before. Having lost a handful of key members from last season's grand final team, I was interested to see how the make up of the side would look come round 1. Coach Carter approached me during the pre-season with numerous plans and theories for the season ahead, (mind you I'm convinced he dreams about UOW cricket and how to get the 7 points), we discussed how we would tackle the season tactically. As always with UOW, a strong recruitment process allowed a number of very talented cricketers to come back into the mix and make selections, strategy and line ups very difficult. Prior to Round 1, we had about 26 players who could all comfortably play 1st and 2nd grade, and this isn't even including the standout performers from 3rd grade. Tough times for the selection panel, but in 1st grade we had a strong side worked out and ready to take on the season. With a few players coming and going from 1s, we remained consistent throughout the entire year, picking up 8 wins (2 of which were outrights) and 2 draws due to wet weather. Possibly one of these draws was a saving grace for myself, having sent Balgownie into bat on a belta and watching them score 340 before the heavens opened up and cyclonic conditions hammered down on UOW#1, I will never complain about the rain again. I was pondering around Christmas time about where our strengths lied, how we would approach finals cricket and what brand of cricket we would like to play. Once again our strength was our bowling cartel. With our triage of fast bowlers Simon Irish (18 wickets @ 9.81), Rhys Voysey (36 wickets @ 11.42) and the forever unlucky Tarun Muthanna (110 overs, 15 wickets @11.73..economy rate of 1.6 runs per over), this was an area we had to focus on in our surge towards the premiership. It's not very often all 3 of your lead seamers average under 12 runs per wicket and it's a just reward for all the hard work at training these guys have put in throughout the season (or the week before the semi's in Simon's case). Congrats fellas. At the start of the season, Tim and I had initially discussed having spin as our focal point for our bowling. We certainly had the calibre for a dominant spin attack, however the facilities probably didn't allow spin to play as big of a role. Vijay Karthik (15 wickets @ 13.20) and Murray Crowe (21 wickets @ 18.10) played the spin role very well throughout the season, balancing out our attack with two very different styles of bowling, both equally effective. Unfortunately James Chappell did not get the chance to bowl his leg breaks this year, and I will cop the uproar for this decision personally. Following last season's overall batting woes, this season we certainly took a positive step towards improving this. Last year we crossed 200 only once, whereas this year we achieved the target 4 times, a very good outcome with our batting group should be proud of. Consistency with the bat could still be improved, from all 11 players, with numerous collapses throughout the season, but if the boys can continue to embrace the challenge of fielding pressure and look to build partnerships, this will definitely improve. I commented in last year's annual report regarding one of our long standing clubmen Taun Stanham, "If he can switch between the frames of mind at the right moments in games, his consistency will improve and he will churn out a mountain of runs and be an unstoppable force in this comp". Whether it be coincidence or not, Taun did exactly this and the results showed. 406 runs @ 50.75 to claim the UOWCC and Cricket Illawarra batting awards demonstrates a greatly matured approach to his game and he became our most reliable batsman, well done mate. Now to convert a 90 into a ton.... On top of this, solid seasons from Amit Balgi (249 runs @31.13), Shaun Thompson (152 runs at 25.53, proving very valuable at number 7 with at least two match clinching knocks) and the returning Andrew Page from a horrific injury (129 runs at 21.50) bolstered the side which was invaluable throughout the year. Vijay Karthik had a breakout season with the bat, scoring his first 100 in 1st grade, and smashing 341 runs at 31.00 to add some statistics to the increasingly obvious talent he presents.

Our T20 game typically isn't our strongest suit. With the aggressive side that we have, there is a lot of potential for a successful side if harnessed correctly. Our new recruit James Chappell shone in the T20s, and having only ever hit 2 grade 6s, belted numerous bombs on his way to 104 T20 runs in 3 innings at an average of 52. Unfortunately there weren't too many other great performances in the competition with us bowing out in the round stages. A huge congratulations and thankyou to our head coach Tim Carter. Your work behind the scenes is something that does go unaccounted for, and your development of the club as a whole has been an integral factor in what UOW cricket is becoming. The premiership you're after isn't far away, the beers will taste ever so sweet on that warm afternoon at Dalton Park in late March of next year. It saddens me that I won't be a part of the club next year, and looking back over the season now it has struck me how much I will miss the club. UOW Cricket isn't like other clubs. No other club has the same level of support that people such as Bruce Tosswill or the Pemberton's provide. No other club has the same level of companionship between people of all grades and so regularly hang out with outside of cricket. UOW Cricket will be a force to be reckoned with for a number of years. If there's one passing wish I want to leave, is that everybody stays loyal to the club and cherish every moment playing cricket with your mates, they will be the best times you have on and off the field. Until next time, Mitchell Calder captain

2ND GRADE REPORT Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank those people who work industriously to ensure we get to enjoy a game of cricket on Saturday afternoons. A big thank you to the UOWCC committee, coach, team captains and those who found a way to pitch in without a title. Thank you to Geraldine who supplies the team with a cheer squad every week and also ensures our afternoon tea is tasty and

nutritious. Thanks to Lee Sproal for the continued support and doing a stellar job when I was unavailable. Thanks to Covers Captain Dean Henderson for ensuring the covers were tightly rolled without incident or injury. Finally thanks to the players for setting up, packing up and all the good times in between. Unfortunately the team could not improve on last year’s effort and fell short of making the finals. Lucky for us, cricket is not only about winning and spending an afternoon in the sun hanging out with your mates more than makes up for losing. Consistent underperformance with the bat proved to be our major shortcoming; we were constantly 50 or more runs from a competitive total. 2014/14 proved a disappointing season for many batsmen with great potential. However, there were some innings worth mentioning. Kurt Majoor – 79 not out Vivek Nandigam 79 Andrew Page – 70 Alex Prudence – passed 50 twice with his best score 69 not out Our bowling line up was one of the best in the competition, we regularly held teams to, or bowled teams out for defendable totals. Only once was a score of more than 200 (202) posted against us and we bowled the opposition out for less than 150 on 6 occasions. The best individual performances were: Matt Opie – 5/39 Bhanu Ravichandran – 5/34 Four other players took 4 wickets on at least one occasion. This is a reflection of the depth of our bowling attack that this year had 18 players taking wickets. Thanks again to all of the players on another enjoyable season. Michael Williams Captain

3RD GRADE REPORT Overall we had a great year, Cricket was a distant second to hanging out with a bunch of good blokes and Glen Lee. On the field we were dominant, winning more games than Carter has been fined. The best thing about this year was everyone chipped in, gave their best and fit into what Uni Thirsties is all about. We missed out on the grand final; however, we were the best team in the competition and we did get the highly coveted T20 championship. While no one set the world on fire statistically or literally our batting performances were very good. We played a lot on really poor decks and long outfields, some longer than Pez's chest hair. However, unlike Pez's catching (right Brother Douleye) we got the job done. We had 1 century maker, my brothers mate who rocked up with no pants or undies and smashed a cool 130, 50s were made by Simon 'dog a ton' Abbott, Brother L 'Punctual' Douleye, Gavin 'Whoops this is a typo, he didn’t actually' Barlow, Ryan 'Don’t play important games' Kiddle, Glen 'how was presentation night' Lee, Daniel 'Awesome' Morris, James 'Mums sambos welcome anytime' Perry and Pete 'schwarzenegger' Sommerville. Our best bat was Daniel Morris but circumstances and ability stopped him from winning our averages, that went to Glen Lee, scoring 258 at 32. Notable run scorers, Pembo with 129, Kiddle 129, Douleye 136, Abbott 136, Harry 153, and Captain America 257. Our biggest strength this season was our looks and charisma, but after that we were great in the field - sans Perry, and great with the ball. We only had the one 5fa, with Stevie J Jancetic taking 5-26 and was comfortably our most dangerous bowler taking 22 wickets at 10.77. Besides Steve we only had 2 other players take over 10 wickets, which shows our all round strengths. Most weeks we would only have the one pace bowler and rotated 4-5 spinners around him. Tom 'How f#$king hard is it to hold a ball when

running in' Opie bowled really well and took 14 wickets at 16 and idiots got our to my moon balls 16 times at 12. We had contributions from a lot of people this year and a big thank you to anyone who played with us, apologies to players who missed out due to the strength in our club. Personally I loved every bit of the year and I would much rather hang out with mates and enjoy a beer after every game than worry about results and what could have been. It’s been a pleasure having the honor of leading us around the park (mainly cause I can bat and bowl whenever I want) and I hope to run around again next year. 4TH GRADE BLUE REPORT First match was against Keira Red at Beaton Park and we batted first with a great innings from Cameron Brown and MK Shahzad with Cameron on an unbeaten 40 and Mk on 37 not out. We lost 6 wickets for our total of 6 / 169 after 45 overs. Keira seemed to be doing it easy or so they thought but Thorney’s excellent bowling with 4 for 13 and MK’s return of 3 for 42 saw Keira all out for 166. Somewhat close but we felt we had it in the bag. We then played the eventual winners of the competition, Northern Districts, in the next round on the turf at home. We sent them in and they managed 135 all out with one batter scoring 68 of those runs. We fielded and bowled as well as we could and we felt we could chase down this total but alas we were about 19 runs short. I blame myself for going for a rather extravagant shot to a spinner only to be bowled. If I had managed maybe 10 runs or so we would have won this match easily but they fielded and bowled well and it was not to be. All of our batters scored only a handful of runs each and on that performance ND’s were worthy winners. We did unleash Abhay, 3/36 and Babar, 4/13 to keep their score low but we could not overtake their runs. Round 3 pitted us against another Keira team and this was a demolition job against the hapless team. We scored an impressive 177 runs with Lee Doulis managing 45 runs to take us to an imposing total on the slow surface. Kewira never looked in the hunt to be all out for 120 with Babar again claiming a match winning 3/18. 2 wins, 1 loss. We had a bye the following week only to follow up in round 5 with the match against Corrimal Green who were in truth, hopeless. Again we batted first and amassed 210 for 5, with honours shared between

Page 17: ANNUAL REPORT 2014 2015 - UOW Cricket Club · ANNUAL REPORT 2014 – 2015 ... Their level of enthusiasm is unbeatable; they ... In saying this coach Tim Carter’s ongoing vision,

Brian Everett 47, Mitch Cohen 40 n.o. and Cameron 39 n.o. and then Abhay destroying them with 4/11 to have then all out for 60. Game 6 was against the Reds at home where we managed to score 122 runs with Dave Kampers on 36 and a great bowling spell by Nick Anderson 3/19 to have the Reds all out for 108. We now moved on to play Wests and witness Pushpinder Singh score an excellent 92 runs and being caught on the fence going for another smash, along with Dave Kampers 46, Glenn Lee 41 and Cameron another not out on 35 to take us to an impressive 273 off 45 overs at an average of over 6 runs per over. West at least made a credible total of 8/176 but were never in the hunt with Jim taking 3/24 with his finger spinners. We were now at 5 wins 1 loss as we moved onto Warrawong to play against the Calypso kings from the Corrimal Red team. We won the toss and batted with a great innings from Brian Everett at 81, ably assisted by Babar on 52 for a pretty good total of 180 which was probably worth about 200 on the lush outfield. Corrimal Reds never die wondering and we needed to keep ourselves together during their big hitting and eventually if we bowl well enough we should have enough runs to defend. We got them all out for 148 and yes there were some flurries but we fielded well and with Abhay 4/37 and Thorney 3/24 the job was done. We moved on to play the Corrimal Whites and the less said the better as they were all out for 31 and we lost 1 wicket in the chase. Our next stop was Dapto which according to all who played was a very tight and tough match which we managed to just win. Dapto were all out for 98, with Babar claiming a match winning 5/11 off his overs. We just managed to win this one on run rate with us being 8/98 in many fewer overs than they. We were all primed for round 11 with a strong team only to be thwarted by a forfeit by Wollongong. Round 12 saw us having to travel to Helensburgh and the skipper and some others in our team declined the trip and what a great victory it was with Helensburgh being all out for 161 again with Babar claiming 4/37. Our turn to bat and we only lost 3 wickets chasing the meagre total on the postage stamp of a ground. Babar scoring 61, Cameron 37 and Vic Kosiak 30 n.o. An impressive victory at the Burgh. We were now up against Corrimal Reds again and this time we rolled them for 122 with Abhay being the destroyer at 4/23 and Babar scoring an impressive 67 n.o. to have the match safely tucked away at 4/124 chasing. This now placed us at 10 for 1 and the team was playing very well. Another game against Corrimal Green saw us score an impressive 6/238 with Dan Baker making an excellent 83, Babar with another half century on 55 and an excellent late flurry of boundaries by Brian Everett on 41n.o. In fact 200 seemed to be difficult but such was the power hitting and fine shot making by Brian and Dan that we moved the total to a very imposing one for the opposition to beat. Abhay with 4/15 and Babar with 3/17 made the task impossible for Corrimal who only managed 119. A rained out draw followed against Keira with the next match against the other team at the top of the table, Northern Districts at the Thunderdome. We were all looking forward to this match. We won the toss and sent them in and soon had their best batsman out by a brilliant Abhay delivery that took the top of off stump. They did however hold on to score 159 runs which on the turf can be a difficult total to chase. We had a very good batting team for this match but alas all did not go to plan. For a while it seemed as if were we well into the match but a few quick wickets to their slow bowlers had us reeling and apart from 37 by Babar, the rest of us faltered and we only managed 122 runs with Brian the pick of the bowlers at 3/38. We finished the season proper with 11 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses, which now placed us against the Corrimal Reds in the Qualifying semis at Dalton Middle. We scored 159 runs which always felt about 20 short of where the skipper wanted to be with Brian Everett again making 48 and being caught by one of the better catches that I have seen and it was about 10 metres from my square leg umpiring position. They say catches win matches and I believe that had not this catch been taken, Brian was on fire and no doubt he would have secured the extra 20 that we needed. Andrew Clark also scored an impressive 33. Once again we knew we had to hold onto our nerve as they came out swinging and connecting.

Page 18: ANNUAL REPORT 2014 2015 - UOW Cricket Club · ANNUAL REPORT 2014 – 2015 ... Their level of enthusiasm is unbeatable; they ... In saying this coach Tim Carter’s ongoing vision,

They had reached about 90 at drinks with the loss of only 4 wickets but we were playing well and only needed to break up a partnership or two to have the match under control. Wickets did start falling after drinks but they were getting very close to our total. The ninth wicket fell at 154 and this was a very tense time for all. Thorney should have clean bowled the tail enders on a number of occasions but the edge of the bat triumphed and they passed our score with another edge. They were 9/160 and we had played ourselves to a standstill. We tried everything but it was not to be. A great season by the Blues. It was both a pleasure and an honour to have been with the Blues this year and a stratospheric thanks to all 29 players who ended up playing for the Blues this year. See you next season. Jim Scardanas Captain

4TH GRADE RED REPORT From the day I got the message from Ryan and Bruce asking to Captain the Reds side to the final match against Keira Reds which was a crucial game that decided our finals fate, it was an absolute pleasure to have a team that put in 100% week in week out. With the majority of the team being new to UOW Cricket, it was a challenge at times but with the help from the likes of Ravi, Phil and later in the season Pembo, we seemed to get the balance right and everyone started to enjoy their cricket and it showed with the results and it meant we had a great run we had in the back half of the season. Although personally I missed a few games at the start of the season due to work and horse commitments, Ravi was able to step up and look after the side for a few games whilst the boys were still getting used to the Aussie Cricket conditions. We had a topsy turvy start to the season and by the Christmas break for the T20 season we had played 9 games which consisted of 2 Wins, 1 Tie, 1 Draw and 5 Losses. It wasn’t the start we were looking for but there was some highlights and unfortunately lowlights that made it a very interesting start for the boys. The tied game against Keira Gold was a game we really should have lost as they were chasing 130 and at 2 for 90 they were cruising along until Dan Jeffrey and I were able to take 6 wickets in 14 overs and with an almost perfect last over from Abdul Rauf (the tying run came off the very last ball) we managed to salvage a draw. Only two wins followed in the next five games, one of which was a great performance by the boys lead by Ravi against eventual finalists Corrimal Red. Also during this run, the local derby (I unfortunately missed this game) with the Blues went down to the wire with the boys falling short by 14 runs in a tightly fought contest. Our only other highlight and lowlight came in the game against Helensburgh up at the postage stamp on the Phil Hughes weekend of games. With a gritty batting performance from the boys who were being bombarded with some great bowling, we were able to score 190 runs for the loss of only 6 wickets, the final wicket being Ravi getting run out on 99 after a dominant display with the bat. I am still to this day getting criticized by him for not telling him what score he was on in the final few overs as he claimed he would have got a century if he knew, oh well we will never know. Helensburgh got off to a terrible start when we had them at 2 for 9 within the first few overs and then they had their number one and two batsmen at the crease who seemed to be scoring at will. When we finally dismissed the Districts leading run scorer for 87, they were 6-158 and we still had hope. The game basically came down to the last few overs which were an absolute debacle and after having 2 stumpings and a plumb LBW decision not go our way in just one over, the game got very ugly and the game was over with yet another dubious caught and bowled decision and after having words with their umpires and batsmen I was threatened to get my head beat in by the non-striker who took it upon himself to umpire the game, all in all it was a high scoring game which went sour on a day of remembrance and respect for the game. The year ended with a crippling loss to Northern Districts (the eventual champions) and the only thing of note in the game was Richard “Rowdy” Baker who went off the field in disgust after being run out by Karthik Shetty (not his first nor his last for the season) and we didn’t see Rowdy again for the rest of the 2014/15 season which was a shame as we really struggled on the batting side of the game. Over the Christmas period, we had the T20 comp and after losing 2 of the first three games, we were able to win our final 2 games and get through to the Semi-Finals which we lost again to the eventual T20 champions in Northern Districts. We definitely had some highlights in the T20 Series, these being a 93 not out by Phil Drenkhahn against Wollongong, 62 runs by Mick Guy and a another not out score of 48 by Phil in a big win over Dapto, and a gritty bowling performance to defend 108 runs with Dan Jeffrey standing out with bowling figures of 4-10 to defeat Keira Gold and make the Semis. Phil’s efforts weren’t in vain as he ended up taking the Batting Honours for the whole Club with the most runs in the

Page 19: ANNUAL REPORT 2014 2015 - UOW Cricket Club · ANNUAL REPORT 2014 – 2015 ... Their level of enthusiasm is unbeatable; they ... In saying this coach Tim Carter’s ongoing vision,

T20 Comp with 193 runs at an average of over 48 (over double that what he scored in the normal season) so his efforts were definitely Warner or Maxwell like in the T20’s. Great effort Phil, hopefully we see more of the same next year. The new year and the second half of the season brought a renewed vigour to the team and it was reflected in the results we were getting. Although it was a weekly battle with Ryan and the selection of recognised batsmen when he returned from his Christmas Holiday, we seemed to have extra players every week but no one was ever willing to open the batting and give the team stability up top. I used our bowling strengths to our advantage and every toss we won, we bowled first and every toss we lost, we bowled first as well coincidentally. After our first game of 2015 which was a Bye, we easily accounted for Wests Illawarra with a bit of a mish mash team (Balamurali, who was affectionately known as Bala during the season took 3-13 off 9 overs and I took 3-8 of 5 overs with Dave Kampers staring in the field with 4 catches, 3 of which were off my bowling). We scraped home against Wollongong on UOW 2 when chasing 111, we got there with 17 overs to spare and with Abdul’s 19no, we got the runs 9 down. Other notable contributions in the game were 16 runs each from Mick Guy and Sander Kroes (his highest score for the first season of cricket ever played in his life, well done Sander), and Phil’s 24 runs, this along with Mick’s 4-16 with the ball mad ethis a very exciting game. The next week we easily accounted for a depleted Helensburgh side (oh what sweet revenge that was) and with 4 games to go, I calculated that we need to win 3 of the last four games to qualify for the finals. Round 14, mission accomplished against Wollongong on a newly turfed Dalton North, wise heads prevailed at the end with Pembo’s 23 runs providing a few good partnerships to get us home, also special mention for Phil who again bowled well for his 4-14 off 9 overs. Round 15, Dapto at UOW 2. 5 overs in and the rain came and stayed for the rest of the day, a draw and 3 points a piece which was not on the agenda. Now the calculations all changed around and we needed to beat Keira Gold and take points off Keira Red in the final round to get there. Round 16, we easily accounted for Keira Gold with fine bowling performances all round including Bala’s 4/20 off his 9 overs. The Batting was by far our best of the Season in this game with Nick Anderson 33no and Sundeep Sai 46 making a 76 run opening partnership which helped the team easily account for Keira’s 101 runs. With the form we were in, we went into the final round game against Keira Red with confidence and needing at least 2 points to secure a spot in the finals. Nothing went to plan. Keira scored 183 runs and we could only muster a paltry total of 75 runs after 37 overs, the only upside of the game was that I was able to secure 5 for 12 off my 5 overs late in the Keira innings to secure the Reds first 5 wicket haul for the season. All in all, a valiant effort from a great bunch of blokes who put there all in week in week out and I must make special mention of those who helped me during my first ever season of captain for the UOW. Thanks to Ravi, Phil and Pembo for all their assistance on and off the field. When it comes to stats, Ravi won the Batting with 246 runs for the season and a high score of 99 against Helensburgh. Phil ended up with the most wickets for the season with 20 wickets at an average of 14. Other notable batting stats were Sundeep who accumulated 159 runs and Amit who totalled 154 runs for the season, and with 111 runs from Alan Jangid in only 6 games, oh what could have been if Alan was available for the whole season as our opener. On the bowling aide of things which I must admit was out strength during the season, special mention must go to Dan Jeffrey with 18 wickets, Bala with 16 wickets, Abdul with 14 wickets, Ravi with 13 wickets and myself with 18 wickets. Again, I thank everyone involved in the UOW Cricket Club for another successful year and although we weren’t able to get a 4th grade side to the finals, Unlucky Blues, you deserved better for the season you guys had, I think we have a strong base for a couple of good sides to cause some grief in the 4th grade comp in 2015/16. Until next time, this is Arif the rookie captain signing off on a great year of cricket. Arif Mehmet Captain

UNDER 14S REPORT

The University of Wollongong junior cricket team remained in the under 14 competition for the 2015/15 season and it turned out to be quite a successful one. The team set out with the same focus on fun and maximum participation and the results speak for themselves with the team improving on last year and

making the finals for the first time. Unfortunately, a very strong team surpassed the boys in the semi final.

To go with the team success a number of players reached individual milestones this year: Ty Kroes 101 not out/81 not out/63 not out (a tribute to Phil Hughes) Aiden Cook 72 Drew Bryant 61 Angus Rawlinson 52 not out Jacob Miners 51 Joel Spiers took 4/9 On the back of fantastic seasons with the bat, Ty Kroes and Aidan Cook played representative cricket and made the 2015/16 development squads. Congratulations must be given to them both. Special thank you needs to be extended to Sander Kroes who has taken the reigns with the behind the scenes work and has been fantastic. A big thank you goes to Greg Walker who did a great job of coaching the team on Saturday mornings. Also, to the many parents who have helped with game day set ups, scoring, warm ups, training sessions, seeking/providing sponsorship, club and district committee membership. It is you guys who keep the team on the field and your efforts are noted and greatly appreciated. Once again it was a year of playing cricket with good mates and having a great time participating in a sport for the right reasons with the right attitude. Thanks for a cracking season!
