Sundarban People
Main occupation of the people of Sunderbans is agriculture
and pisciculture. All agriculture is mono crop agriculture
and nearly 55% of the population is landless and hence
dependent on daily wage from agricultural or related labour
activities. 44% of the effective area is under pisciculture
with participation of women being higher in this activity
than the men. Fishing on the high seas with larger boats is
few and far between owing to restrictions on number of
months in which high sea fishing is permitted and lack of
equipment. There is also a limited income obtained from
forest produce such as honey and medicinal plants.
Migration to the cities for economic reasons is common
both for adults and children.
Due to the geographical location, transport is limited, with
boats and van rickshaw as main mean of transportation.
Conditions of village roads are bad and only a few parts of
the roads are brick-paved.
Indian part of the Sundarbans covers around 9630 square
kilometers in West Bengal, spreading across 106 islands in 19
administrative blocks of its two districts – 6 from the North 24
Parganas district (out of 22 blocks) and 13 from the South 24
Parganas district (out of 29 blocks). About 55% of the
inhabitants are Hindus, 30% Muslim, and about 15% pertain to
scheduled castes and tribal communities.
The Sundarbans is one of the most disaster prone areas in the country being regularly
affected by cyclonic storms and tidal waves. Earthen embankments and loss of life and
destruction of crops and property is being devastate the region regular basis. The effects of
the cyclone AILA in 2009, which was responsible for massive destruction in the Sundarbans,
can still be felt in the remote villages and stands to huge recovery by .

Case Story Niranjan Mondal; Eye Cataract Operation beneficiary Village – Kochuberia, Block - Sagar Age – 66 Sex – Male Education – Can Sign MR No. 5505/14 OT date – 19.11.14 Niranjan Mondal lived with wife, Son, Son`s wife and
three son`s daughter. Two daughters have got married.
He has no cultivable land but homestead land. Earlier he
has paid some rupees to buy land but due payment the
registration yet to complete. He is day labor by
occupation. The labor rate in the area is rupees 300/- per
day. Now and then he cultivated vegetable in other land
for household consumption. Other than that Niranjan
Mondal do work to earn money net cleaning of the
fisherman, winnowing and basket binding, labor work in
betel field (PANER BOROJ), paddy cutting. Now one betel
and tea shop is going in Kochuberia Jatey Ghat where he
cooperates with his son to run the shop.
But in the home there is no peace in family. The quarrel
between mother in law and son`s wife is daily work in the
family. Because the daily work of Niranjan Mondal has
stopped due to eye problem and gradually income of the
family is not sufficient to survive. Now the income of the
family has stopped. The son has made one betel shop. By
the income of the shop the son`s wife did not share the
whole family. Every month two or three times son`s wife
has separated from the family and after few days later
they joined together. Niranjan Mandal blames his fate
because due to eye problem he cannot work hard as
earlier. All his work has stopped now. No one call on to
do work.
One day the CHW of Sagar told that in Sundarban Eye Hospital there has facility of cataract operation. The CHW send Niranjan Mondal to Hospital for cataract operation being screening. The Niranjan Mondal came to the Sundarban Eye Hospital for cataract operation. The Doctor advised for cataract operation. After operation he is seeing fine. He told whatever I do not see, I am seeing fine now. Everything is glitter in front of me. Getting rest one month now he has started all work in the field. He spends more time in the betel and tea shop. Without any hesitation he now prepared betel and tea for sell. Villagers are call on to do work. Now in the home he is not liability. The son`s wife has stopped quarreled. Now I am happy. I offer my gratitude to the Sundarban Eye Hospital for my operation.
“We on behalf of School Management committee would like to express thanks to SSDC for assist on hand washing facility and for conducting continuous hygiene education sessions for the students. This hand washing station is now in proper use by the children. They are washing their hands before taking mid-day meal. It has also possible to ensure hand washing with soap use after every time toilet use. Hope that this practice will impact to lifelong follow by the students’’. …….. Sri Arup Dinda, head teacher, Mahendranagar FP School, Patharpratima .
Dharani Patra, a toilet beneficiary, with happy experience has expressed his words as “We are from poor family and we had no toilet of our own. We, the male members usually used to go for open defecation and for female members there was a temporary pit to use at our pond embankment. One day when SSDC worker came into contact with us, we get valuable information from them and encouraged to make a permanent toilet at home. Now, we all are happy to use out newly constructed toilet. This has also saved us from the shame that we had at earliert”.
“I never thought that our human
excreta may use for kitchen garden? .
Our fecal may used as manner. We
used urine as manner but after Toilet
volt open and getting lab testing report
of our decomposed material, we use it
at our kitchen garden with better result
for growth of vegetables. Hope to
develop an improved kitchen garden
in future” …… Sri Sudam Barui from

to express our heartiest gratitude to SSDC
WASH Project team. As like other activities
on constrictive as well as behavior change
initiative, construction of community
garbage bin is an innovative action we
think. These are now well maintained by
the user committee and mostly useful for
market and gathering places. This step may
be considered as a best effort to keep our
environment neat and clean’’……… Ms.

Gram Panchayet
Sri Jagadish Maity at garbage bin site when
they were burning the market waste at
garbage bin has said that, “before having
this community garbage bin, we were not
serious about the market waste
management. Whole environment was
quite dirty with thrown waste materials
here and there. Now we are strict about
market waste management and all are
using the garbage bin properly.
Periodically, we are burning the waste
materials in a week. Now the market place
is clean than before. We are happy to keep
our contribution towards environment
protection.”
