The Girl Scout Promise

On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

The Girl Scout Law

I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.

Giving girls opportunities that are girl focused and girl led is a priority here at Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast (GSCCC). Where else but in Girl Scouts can girls work together towards shared goals in an environment that makes them feel powerful, safe and gives them a sense of belonging? It’s a place where girls can become leaders, where girls bloom among other girls – away from school pressures, social cliques and boys. It’s a place where girls say they can be themselves and take risks to gain the skills and confidence they need to become leaders, and benefit from being around adults who encourage and support their efforts.

Throughout our history, Girl Scouts has remained the nation’s best leadership experience for girls. While there are many extracurricular options for girls to choose from, when it comes to leadership building, Girl Scouts is their top pick. In a world where women make up approximately 51 percent of the U.S. population, yet are just 17 percent of Congress, and where women make up only 14.3 percent of the executive officers of Fortune 500 companies, giving girls a place where they can grow into leaders is more important than ever.

No matter which path they select in Girl Scouts – troop, special interest, outdoors or travel – girls will access the keys that open doors that lead them to discover what they can do. A girl can “try on” different leadership roles and grow into the one that fits her best.

Building leaders, one girl at a time. This is what we do in Girl Scouts and what we’ve been doing for over 103 years. Thank you for helping us give girls the tools they need to lead – to find, inside the uncertain girl, the citizen who will make the world a better place.

“I realize that each year it has changed and grown until I

know that, a decade from now, what I

might say of it would seem like an echo of what has been

instead of what is.” Juliette Gordon Low

Maya Garcia of Poquoson was selected as the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Department of Virginia, Scout of the Year for 2015. As a Girl Scout, Maya has earned the Gold Award, served a term on the GSCCC board of directors and traveled to Our Cabaña, the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts World Center in Mexico.

Through Girl Scouts, girls discover the fun, friendship, and power of girls together.

Whether they live in an urban, rural or suburban setting, Girl Scouts is there to serve girls in K-12 grades. Girls may participate in a variety of ways – troops, groups, outdoor

experiences, travel and special events. Whichever way they decide to participate, all girl members become part of a

unique sisterhood who share the Girl Scout Promise and Law.

Outreach efforts empower girls living in underserved areas with the self-confidence to make positive health, education and career decisions. Through

our after-school and community center programs, girls develop skills in leadership, community service, conflict resolution, communication and critical thinking. Because of outreach, so many more girls in need are benefiting from the Girl Scout advantage! From STEM activities to learning about healthy eating and how to deal with conflict, girls found opportunities in

Girl Scouts that they may not have had otherwise. Among the donors who made outreach programs possible were: Alcoa Foundation; Beasley Foundation; United Way of South Hampton Roads Women’s Leadership Council, and the Obici Healthcare Foundation.

Reaching out to girls everywhere to help them become girls of

courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a

better place!

VolunteersGirl Scout volunteers foster a community of discovery and support for girls. They come together to share stories and experiences while making friends that last a lifetime, just like the girls they support! They are important role models that give girls new ways to see the world. The Council offers training opportunities to all volunteers to help them be successful in their positions.

More than 30 volunteer facilitators brought special outdoor programs to girls and helped train other adults to lead girls in outdoor activities. These lead volunteers are members of the Outdoor Adventure Team, the Wild Things and the Blue Herons – all teams that focus on special outdoor activities. Whether it is rock climbing, biking, archery or canoeing, they provide the kind of behind-the-scenes support that makes it possible for girls to make amazing memories.

“There are so many benefits for being active outdoors, both physically and mentally, and outdoor activities can help

familiarize young girls with their neighborhoods. For me, and I know for other volunteers who’ve become involved, it has contributed to my self-confidence and given me a way to build civic pride. It’s also given me opportunities for social interaction which resulted

in a sense of community and belonging.”

Gold Awardees for the 2014-2015 membership year:

Girls’ Voices Girl Scouts is dedicated to ensuring that girls have opportunities to make a difference in their communities. We strive to promote cross-cultural learning opportunities that educate girls on relevant global issues that inspire them to take action. Girls do this through participation in travel opportunities, through special learning and leadership opportunities, and by accepting the challenge to earn the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award earned by a Girl Scout that requires approximately 80 hours of community service on a sustainable project.

Girls earned the highest awards in Girl Scouts.

Physical Well-Being in the Outdoors According to More Than S’mores, a report done by the

Girl Scout Research Institute (GSRI), more than 70 percent of girls surveyed said Girl Scouts allowed them to have an outdoor activity for the first time. Girl Scout outdoor programming allows girls to build healthy attitudes toward exercise, allows them to explore

solutions to environmental issues and develop an increased understanding of the natural sciences, natural

resource management and STEM careers. The report also revealed that the effects of

monthly outdoor exposure on environmental stewardship and

leadership traits were even more pronounced for underserved girls.

Emotional Well-Being According to the GSRI’s State of Girls report, about 30 percent of girls have experienced some form of bullying or relational aggression from their peers. Girl Scouts gives girls the skills to develop healthy relationships and prevent bullying behavior outright. The BFF (Be a Friend First) bullying prevention program offered by Girl Scouts, helps middle-school girls deal with bullying behavior while learning healthy communication skills.

Leadership Through STEM As cited in the GSRI Generation STEM report, 74 percent of teen girls show interest in STEM; however, they have low exposure to STEM fields. That’s why Girl Scouts offers girls STEM programs and exposure to STEM role models and mentors. Research shows this can have a huge impact on a girl’s decision to pursue a STEM course in school or a possible career path. With a hands-on approach and in an all-girl environment, girls are building confidence and interest in STEM through Girl Scout program opportunities!

TravelFrom field trips taken by Girl Scout Daisiesand Brownies to Girl Scout Juniors hitting theroad, landing in such places as the Girl Scout headquarters in New York or the birthplace of Girl Scouts in Savannah, Georgia, girls participated in a variety of Girl Scout travel opportunities. Girls broadened their horizons, made memories, explored new places, practiced team work, gained more self- confidence, and grew more self-reliant. 2,245

Girls participated in Council sponsored STEM events and activities.

2,062 Girls had outdoor opportunities

through Council directed programs.

578 Girls took part in special

programs that focused on building healthy living skills.

“Girl Scouts has provided me with phenomenal opportunities and mentors. Going to the White House Science Fair and sharing my Gold Award project that focused on flight was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.” Lauren Prox

A global trek to Europe was taken by 17 teen Girl Scouts from GSCCC in 2015. Among the highlights was visiting Girl Scout World Center Pax Lodge in London.

Financial Literacy In a Girl Scout Leadership Institute (GSRI) report, Having It All: Girls and Financial Literacy, 90 percent of girls say it’s important for them to learn how to manage money; however, just 12 percent feel confident in making financial decisions. Girl Scouts is giving girls the skills to become more confident in this area by making financial literacy an integral part of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Today 23 of the 132 Girl Scout badges are related to financial empowerment.

Girl Scout Cookie ProgramThe Girl Scout Cookie Program is the largest girl-run business in the

country. More than 8,000 girls participated in the membership year’s cookie season. Much more than a fundraiser, it’s a unique, hands-on

program that is part of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. It allows girls to learn skills from real-life experiences that last far beyond the cookie season, such as goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics.

Inve

st in Girl ScoutsLast year, one-third of the Girl Scouts registered in our

Council received financial assistance to cover the cost of membership, camp or programs. Contributions from our donors helped us give that special gift to girls, one that keeps on giving throughout her life! At Girl Scouts, we believe that when a girl succeeds so does society. We provide her with a place to discover her passion, find her voice and make a positive impact in her community. Girl Scouts are building a better world for all of us! And with the help of our donors, we are able to offer awesome program opportunities that impact girls’ lives. An investment in Girl Scouting is broader than a cause or a cure. It is a commitment to the next generation of self-sufficient and capable women. Thank you for supporting Girl Scouts!

Thanks to a gift from Sharon Durrette-Hunt, 10 GSCCC teen Girl Scouts were able to attend the National Girl Scout Leadership Institute.

Communications With the use of a broad-based communication plan, the Council communicated with Girl Scout volunteers, families and donors. Messaging helped educate the public that Girl Scouts is more than cookies, camps and crafts – we’re about building girls of courage, confidence and character!

GSCCC WebsiteGSCCC re-tooled the Council’s strategic plans and sharpened the business plans to focus more on realistic, sustainable strategies for our growth and success. This included a website refresh and steps to phase into a national customer engagement initiative which will be fully launched in 2017.

Community Service Girl Scouts at GSCCC gave more than 130,000 hours of community service this year. They participated as individuals, with a troop, or chose to participate in a Council-sponsored service project. These acts of kindness helped teach girls the importance of giving back.

More than 344 girls participated in the Council-wide Helping Hands Food

Drive. The spring collection helped replenish community food pantries and programs during a crucial time when their food donations were

the lowest.

10,000+ E-newsletters were delivered to

members monthly.
