Word from the President

This has been another exciting and productive year at

our Church Community. Again, much has been

achieved. I feel proud, and blessed therefore, to be

heading the Church Community over the past year as its

President especially this year which is the year of its 30

year existence and service to our community. Yes, 30

years Saint Dimitrij has been among Macedonians in

south eastern regions of Melbourne. It is the year for us

to remember and pay tribute to all our members who

gave the initiative to establish a church community and

the subsequent steering committees. Since that group of

people gave the initiative to establish a church

community the idea was whole-heartedly embraced by

Macedonian Community. We have seen it grow slowly

becoming a beautiful place to all of us, Orthodox

Macedonians. It became a place as our Most Venerable

Bishop said which now gathers our hearts and inspires

us to live in God's ways.

I would like to thank the members of the Initiative

Committee, the first Administrative Committee and the

subsequent Administrative Committees over the past 30

years, my fellow members of the present Administrative

Committee and those of the Executive Committee as

well as our parish priests of the past and our present

parish priest Fr. Mile Taleski for the constancy of their

efforts over the past 30 years. Yet, I would like to make

a reminder that the new programs and activities for the

future of our Church Community introduced by Father

Mile few years ago should be considered well and put

up in first place of our priorities. That was and is to

provide help to those in need and to show and highlight

the true nature of the Church Community. It is right

time for the Church to drive the best research towards

the needs of the people. We need to increase our

advocacy profile and capabilities and to enhance our

public relationship and communications. We need to

gain more supporters. Over the past years much has

been done. For the years to come we need some more

and new investments for the benefit of the people. The

building project to refurbish and to expand the

Community Centre is in place and if God’s willing with

a significant Government help as our application for a

grant has been approved the proposed works are ready

to start. This will benefit our people with better facilities

and better service. This project should be finished by

30th

June 2014. Health promotion sessions will continue

and the elderly service and help as well. Our volunteers

have given countless hours of help and support in the

past and they are ready to continue in the future. Our

Youth Section has grown significantly and slowly

become a way for young Macedonians to come together

and to have a greater voice within the Church

Community. We think this is an important development,

and will hopefully bear fruit into the future for the

young Macedonians and the community more broadly.

I have no doubt the Church Community will go from

strength to strength in its future as our people and

especially our youth hit their stride together. Once again

I thank all and I pay tribute to the Initiative Committee

for their excellent work and guidance. Without their

help there would not have been a Church Community

and we would not have been celebrating the 30th

Jubilee

of “Saint Dimitrij”. I would also like to thank all our

people for their support all over the past years and

presently enabling us to deliver such results to date.

Budimir Sekuloski,

President

St. Dimitrij 30 Years among Macedonians in South Eastern Melbourne Pavlinka Georgiev

A few words about the church service we attended that evening of 9 February 2013.

Besides His Grace, Bishop Peter and Very Reverend, Mile Taleski, the service was co-officiated by

Right Reverend, Abbot Gavril, Very Reverend, Prelate Tone Gulev, Very Reverend, Dusko Spirkoski, Very

Reverend Trajko Mojsov, Very Reverend, Mirko Pesovski and Very Reverend, Gligor Kiselinov. They led us

through prayers. As the service progressed the sonority of their voices and the chants lifted us to some higher

regions. Yes, we felt that the Holy Spirit is with them!!! And yes, they took all of us on this journey as well!

That evening in the Church Hall, we met some

young people. Stefan Milevski and Stephanie told us

about the youth initiative MYI, which is providing

free tutoring to primary and secondary school students

in the Church premises. Marta Elefteriadis gave us a

pamphlet about Macedonian language study at the

Victorian School of Languages. As teachers, my

husband and I were glad to hear of their efforts. "Time

is more valuable than money. You can get more

money, but you cannot get more time." (Jim Rohn,

America's business philosopher.) These young people

unselfishly give their time to our children to achieve

more and to prosper in the Australian Society. We saw

here a young generation raised as true Christians by

the Macedonians in the South Eastern parts of

Melbourne. We are proud of them and applaud their

efforts. Yes, we can say they continue the good work

started by another generation 30 years ago!

The next day, 10 February 2012, there was a

solemn celebration with many guests and parishioners

attending. The Parish Priest, Father Mile Taleski gave

an overview of the events from the buying and

adapting the property in 1983, the construction the

Church, as well as the extention of the building on two

occasions. The first consecration of the Church was

done in 1986. In 2006 his Grace, Bishop Peter

appointed father Mile Taleski as parish priest of St.

Page 5: ANNUAL REPORT 2013 - Microsoft€¦ · ANNUAL REPORT 2013 And Full Financial Statements for the year ended 30 June 2013 Presented at the AGM on 27th October 2013 . This is an Annual

Dimitrij, then he tasked him with the project of the

second building works on the Church. The final

consecration of the new and spacious Temple took

place on 11 February 2012.

Official Recognition Documents were

presented or sent to the priests who served in St.

Dimitrij Church: Father Radoslav Atanasovski, Father

Atanas Stankovski, now Metropolitan Agatangel, and

Father Tomislav Ilievski. Recognition Documents

were also presented to the members of the church

committee, which gave the initiative to establish a

church and the subsequent steering committees.

Father Mile said: “Their service, contribution

and help are highly appreciated by all of us and the

coming generations. May God give to all heavenly

blessings!

Word from the Parish Priest

Let us thank God for He kept us, to be witness and

participants to this wonderful celebration, the 30 years

of the establishment and existence of the Macedonian

Orthodox Church Community (MOCC) “St Dimitrij

Solunski” in Springvale, Victoria. We are so joyful in

God for the act that in God’s Name is done, which is

the purchasing and adapting, as well as double

extension to the church dedicated to Saint Dimitrij

Solunski at Springvale.

This Macedonian Orthodox Church was bought for

the needs of our faithful at this part of the city in the

year 1983, since somewhere towards the end of 1982

the idea was born to establish Macedonian Orthodox

Church Community. And let always be blessed that

initiative and those men who before God have

declared establishing of this church, and who with

God’s blessing called themselves Initiative

Committee. Let these people accept heavenly reward

for their act from our Lord. We are always grateful to

them and remember them in our prayers. May our

Lord always remember Nikola Peshut the first

President to the Initiative Committee, and Slobodan

Nikolovski, Ilija Kuzevski, Lambe Stefanov,

Aleksandar (Aco) Jovanovski, Josif Milevski, and

now deceased Vasil MIlevski, Vasil Trpkovski, Jordan

Ivanov, and Josif Lembovski. These brothers of ours

at the end of 1982 received the blessing from the Holy

Synod of the Macedonian Orthodox Church through

the decision made by the Holy Synod of establishing

of MOCC “St. Dimitrij Solunski” for Springvale and

surrounding areas. After that, the Initiative Committee

at the end of the year took over all necessary activities

for organizing of the Church – People’s Assembly,

which was held on 30th January 1983. At this

Assembly some very important conclusions and

decisions were brought down and most of all: To elect

the very first Church Administrative Committee.

The first elected Administrative Committee

Alongside the members of the Initiative Committee

(mentioned above), the Assembly within the first

Administrative Committee has elected: +Janko

Georgievski – President, Tony Trajcevski, Goce

Kalajdjievski, Naumce Tasevski, Simeon Trifunov,

+Spase Ristevski, Mladen Damevski, Tode Damevski,

This Administrative Committee has continued with

activities and towards the end of the year an executive

contract has been made with the Serbian Orthodox

Church in Springvale. The temple and the church hall

together with the house, recognized by all as the

apartment, were wooden structures.

The church in 1983

In the year 1994 the temple and the church hall were

completely renovated on the existing foundations,

though now with solid construction materials. In 1995,

the new building was blessed and put to use.

The church in 1995

According to the testimony of the people permission

for the structure had been obtained only if it is built on

the existing foundations. Due to this the temple was

again left to be turned with its altar facing south. This

continued to be a handicap for the church and from

what I understand bishop Petar continuously insisted

for there to be found a solution for this and that the

temple to be positioned with its altar facing east. Some

variations were proposed as solutions but remained

unimplemented. Towards the end of 2006, His Grace

appointed me, my humbleness, to the parish of Saint

Dimitrij and entrusted me with a task, giving me his

trust over the project of the temple and the status of

the Church Community.

In 2009, the last construction endeavor was completed

this time with an extension to the church towards the

east. We have it today completely furbished and with

its beautiful architectural appearance. We became

preoccupied with the project. In other words, we

wanted the completion of the building and extension

of the church which in itself contained the final

objective of the pious people from this region, for the

temple to receive in its completion its necessary

splendor.

The church today

And, here it is. Through its beauty once again, and on

this place in Springvale, Victoria, on God’s land of

Austalia, we testify and confirm the priceless values,

traditions, love of God, devotion, diligence, and the

rich church and national culture of the Macedonian

people. The final consecration of the new church took

place in February, on the 11th day, in the year 2012.

We have one more building to be build, a bell tower,

as the temple will finally be complete.

Giving thanks to our God the Holy Trinity, the Father,

the Son and the Holy Spirit, on this given opportunity

and favorable moment we express our ultimate respect

and appreciation to the Initiative Committee, to the

first Administrative Committee, to our priests, father

Radoslav Atanasovski, father Atanas Stankovski (now

Tone Gulev who served this parish, and to all who

served as presidents, deputies, secretaries, treasurers

and members of the Church Committee, our

volunteers, and all the faithful – the parishioners of the

church, who to this day fervently put effort in and

help.

Their service, contribution and help are highly

appreciated by all of us and the coming generations.

May God give to all heavenly blessings!

A BRIEF REPORT ON THE PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES

The Church runs sessions for women on how to reduce the risks of developing breast cancer or in the case of

the existence of the disease on how to take positive steps to handle or to treat the illness. These sessions are

organised monthly and in Macedonian language due to our awareness that the older generation of Macedonian

women does not speak or understand English well. These sessions will help them to develop knowledge and

understanding (and in the cases with early detection or regular appropriate tests) to prevent the onset of the

disease.

The Church also runs sessions for our students, youth, women and elderly on how to identify and resolve issues

of bullying in schools and community, emotional abuse, sexual or physical abuse, and promotes the harmful

impact of gambling and drinking habits and as well as the use of drugs. We run about 12 sessions for each

Page 10: ANNUAL REPORT 2013 - Microsoft€¦ · ANNUAL REPORT 2013 And Full Financial Statements for the year ended 30 June 2013 Presented at the AGM on 27th October 2013 . This is an Annual

group a year for our youth, women and elderly to help them with knowledge and understanding on how to

prevent or to control behaviour that is harmful or abusive.

The Church fully supports these programs and activities by providing facilities for the information sessions, and

for educational programs and help. The Church prints all the informational material and provides refreshments

for all sessions. Takes care and carries on the maintenance of the facilities, and pays all the insurances and

energy. The Church also organises the collection plate for those who need help materially.

The church provides home to a homeless older couple (Ongoing). The church pays for the insurance, land taxes,

Council’s rates, interest on the loan and maintenance. Yet, the church assists the couple with half of the rent.

Through the Welfare section the Church provides material help to the poor. Cares and provides relief to the sick

and elderly. This includes friendly visits to their homes or aged care institutions and hospitals. Elderly who do

not drive or due to illness are picked up from their places and are brought to the church services and to other

social activities in order to be taken out of isolation. A “Table of love” is always prepared for them. Our

volunteeres talk to them and help them with their shopping and all other needs. These activities are on a daily

basis as required. The Welfare Section has 12 people working in this program and each of them gives 10 hours

weekly. Yet, one member of our Welfare group is assigned with the Salvation Army giving up 16 hours of

work every Wednesday and Thursday throughout the year.

Social Support

Social support assists our elderly to participate in church and community life. Activities include:

visiting

telephone based support

assistance with their shopping needs and other related activities.

Counselling, support, information and advocacy services

Counselling and support provides assistance to understand and manage situations, behaviours and relationships

associated with their need for care. This service type also includes interventions such as advocacy, providing

advice and information.

Mentoring program

The Church provides free tutoring sessions to disadvantaged primary and secondary students. These sessions

are carried on for two hour sessions every second Friday.

There аге significant numbers of disadvantaged youth throughout Australia. The problems аге widely

recognised, but attempts to resolve the various issues have resulted too often in the expenditure of enormous

resources with minimal success.

Macedonian Orthodox Church Community “Saint Dimitrij Solunski” Springvale, Inc. (MOCC “Saint Dimitrij”)

with its Youth Section the “Macedonian Youth Initiative” (MYI) is focused on creating sustainable

opportunities for disadvantaged youth. MYI is particularly active in using the tutoring platform to create and

sustain opportunities for young people. MOCC “Saint Dimitrij” is driving а new vision in order to effectively

support youth by establishing an integrated model that will support MYI to provide programs, which encourage

long-term sustainability, self-determination, self-reliance and self-esteem.

Through this program the youth will be given the opportunity to:

• Gain skills and experience

• Undergo accredited training

• Pursue further education if they wish

• lncrease and sustain self-esteem and self-worth

• Contribute positively to their community

• Work аѕ а team towards а common goal

• Establish friendships with а wider community

• Establish mutual respect

• Develop communication and interpersonal skills

• Encourage and support youth going back to school

For the purpose of persuing the program the

Administrative Committee decided to authorise

installation of computers, internet connection and

printing facilities within the premises/offices of the

Macedonian Orthodox Church Community “Saint

Dimitrij Solunski”.

MYI involves all its members to engage actively as

this brings great benefits and creates а sustainable

future for young people. This project will empower

youth to take responsibility and give them the tools to

take accountability for their own future. It also

provides a culturally appropriate forum which meets

the expectations of parents and supports youth in their

local environment. This then gives them opportunity

for wider community participation and engagement

thereby facilitating their independence. We believe

that this social activities model will increase and

sustain self-esteem and self-worth and will contribute

positively to their community promoting them into

respected individuals in the community. Recognition

of effort is significant in motivating and inspiring

youth. By setting individual goals, providing

leadership opportunities and the platform to assume

responsibility and be given a voice in their local

community this then motivates further success of

young people. This project aligns perfectly with the

education focus of the National Strategy for Young

Australians in that it provides individual support to

young people to maintain a connection with

education. By supporting young people to make or

maintain these connections it fosters a sense of

belonging to their wider community and belief in

them. By strengthening families through provision of

this support in a culturally relevant context it

overcomes many of the barriers that young people

face and thereby supports transition into independence

and adulthood. This project has the expected outcome

of strengthening the partnership between youth and

adults and is a key strategy for promoting youth

development in the Macedonian and wider Australian

community. This collaboration provides young people

with the practical experience that reinforces their role

as active citizens. In addition giving young people a

key role in addressing their community needs,

strengthens and promotes positive perceptions of

youth.

The Macedonian Youth Initiative (MYI) project aims

to achieve substantial academic improvements to

primary and secondary students of parents who do not

speak English well and do not understand the

education system in Australia (recently migrated) and

those students who cannot afford tutoring fees. MYI

initiated the idea of addressing the importance of

education and developed the program in the form of

Page 12: ANNUAL REPORT 2013 - Microsoft€¦ · ANNUAL REPORT 2013 And Full Financial Statements for the year ended 30 June 2013 Presented at the AGM on 27th October 2013 . This is an Annual

mentoring and tutoring sessions. This model requires

team work towards а common goal and establishes

friendships and mutual respect. It develops the

communication and interpersonal skills of young

people and encourages and supports youth either

going back or remaining in school or choosing other

educational pathways thereby fostering engagement

and participation. By creating self-reliance and self-

determination for youth and providing future

opportunities for youth and the community to interact

it gives them the opportunity to take responsibility

and accountability for their own actions and future.

Their involvement with the project will provide

connection асгоѕѕ generations and hopefully with

future support and leadership give them the

opportunity to achieve a longer term goal and vision

of overtaking leadership of the community

organisation. This project involves youth taking the

reins of implementation of the project giving them a

voice and creating positive and supported

opportunities and fostering connection between young

people, families, older generations and the wider

community. Involving young people directly and

taking a holistic approach by recognising the

intersection of youth, families, schools and

community and giving young people the opportunity

to take part in decisions that affect them has wide

reaching benefits not only for the youth themselves

but also for the wider community they live in. Young

people are the focus of this project and will be

involved at all levels. Tertiary students will be

involved through receiving leadership training thereby

enhancing their skills to deliver and plan tutoring and

mentoring to younger students at primary and

secondary level. Primary and secondary students will

be the recipients of the tutoring and mentoring. This

type of collaborative work fosters development of life

skills such as confidence, goal setting, decision

making, and cooperation. All students will be

involved in decision making regarding the youth

camp and expected outcomes. The expected linkages

of this project is promoting and working in

partnership with local schools in the South Eastern

suburbs to identify and refer students in need of

support thereby strengthening community ties

between the Macedonian and wider Australian

community.
