AHMEDABAD MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT 2013-2014 lllll 1
From the President
I am glad that your Association has completed yet another
year with panache. The year 2013-14, like previous years,
has been a very eventful year replete with broad a spectrum
of activities. The organization launched many new
initiatives charting out new directions while continuing its
endeavors to forge ahead in tune with emerging trends in
the arena of management. AMA has consistently pursued
the goal, achieving excellence and exceeding expectations
both of its members and the civil society at large.
Over the years, it has offered certificate and diploma programmes as an alternative
route for business executives. AMA has built up a strong reputation for itself by
providing services not just for members and the business community, but also for
reaching out to a wide spectrum of people. School and college children, teachers,
trade, industry and commerce have all greatly benefited from the specialized
programmes conducted by the AMA, which are looked upon as the premier choice
for management development, training and education.
During the year AMA organized 124 Lectures. The number of training
programmes conducted rose to 571 on different topics. More than 20000 people
attended lecture programmes while 11125 persons successfully completed
training programmes. The year under review also saw 66 in-company
programmes being conducted.
A dozen major conferences were held. This included the very popular annual
Innovation Conference followed by the year’s HR conference and IP Summit. The
other special conferences included the conference on ‘Entrepreneurial
Opportunities in Agriculture; Biotechnology. A conference on Entrepreneurial
Opportunities in Animation attracted a large number of people. The Vikram
Sarabhai Memorial lecture by eminent Scientist Dr. Sivathanu Pillai proved to be a
grand success.
Keeping in view the emerging trends in Entrepreneurship Development, AMA
training programmes focused subjects like work improvement; building efficiency
and starting new ventures. A highlight of these programmes was that they were
attended by people from different parts of Gujarat.
Gujarat has now become global investment hub. Many foreign investors are
scouting business opportunities in the state. Notable among them are French,
Spanish, German, Japanese and Chinese. To facilitate smooth interactions the
AMA has started these language classes besides English.
2 lllll ANNUAL REPORT 2013-2014 AHMEDABAD MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION
New Initiatives
AMA conducted two batches of diploma programmes on International Business
Management, Human Resource Management and Finance. Both the batches were
conducted in collaboration with California State University, San Bernardino. This
apart, as many as 132 training programmes in the area of International Business
were organized in which 3164 people participated.
A unique one day training programme was organized for Municipal School
Children covering 82 schools. As many as 485 students and 234 teachers
participated and benefited from these programmes. So far AMA had conducted
training programmes for 144 schools.
AMA has taken another initiative of compiling study reports on doing business
with different countries. Programmes are being held on the basis of these
reports. AMA is also contemplating to have an economic data centre at the
Library for easy access on Trade related data for Industry at the click of the mouse.
Environment protection in the wake of Global Climate Change has become
imperative to conserve our national resources and preserve our ecological
bio-diversity. One important aspect of this is the energy conservation by taking
recourse to non-conventional energy. AMA organized two seminars on Solar
Energy and Renewable Energy - Gujarat perspective under the aegis of PDPU-
AMA Centre for Non-Conventional Energy. You will be glad to know that the
Centre was established by Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University at AMA for
promotion of Non-Conventional Energy.
The popular AMA week on “Indian Wisdom for Management” completed its
21st year. Each day there was a record turnout of over 1500 persons.
We at AMA are aware that over the remaining part of the current decade, the
globalised world will be confronted with two major challenges. One is the shifting
of Economic Power from the West to East. The other is the revolutionary changes
anticipated in the realm of higher education globally with countries making
speedy efforts to transform themselves as a Knowledge Hub.
AMA has taken many initiatives to make its contribution to the evolution of a
knowledge-based society as it firmly believes that competitiveness depends on
making the most of its distinctive and valuable assets which are skills, innovation
and creativity. AMA’s initiatives in on-line education, International Management
Programmes, On-line Library, Skill Development, Vocational Programmes etc.
would provide valuable contributions to this effort.

American Corner (May 2004 - April 2014)
The American Corner in Ahmedabad
was a partnership between the
American Library, U.S. Consulate in
Mumbai and the host institute i.e. the
Ahmedabad Management Association
(AMA) from May 15, 2004 to March 31,
2014. There are more than 400 American
Corners across the World. The mission of
each American Corner is to be a partner in
promoting mutual understanding with the United States of America and to provide
accurate information about United States history, education, government, society,
and values; to maintain an open dialogue with host country publics through
programs that build bridges of understanding; to provide access to English language
resources, computers, and the Internet; and to leverage United States assistance and
exchange programs in the host country.
The American Corner in Ahmedabad facilitated a window to information about the
United States for about ten years. A large number of wide ranging audiences made
use of the facility and used as a center for learning and exchanging information
about the United States not only through its library resources and services, but also
through frequent programs organized by the Corner independently and in
collaboration with the Public Affairs Section. The Corner actively promoted the
American Library services and connected key contacts with the Mumbai Public
Affairs Section. The
services included
answering reference
queries (in person, letter,
emails or phone); providing
information about the US
including some basic
information about higher
education in the US;

Development, audio-visual and periodical collections; organizing programs, events
and activities like author readings, lectures, films, workshops, and exhibits.
American Corner Ahmedabad was the first and most successful American Corners

language learning workshops, film screenings, and expert briefings on a variety of
topics over the past nine years. The American Corner attracted Students, Academics,
Researchers and Professionals. However, due to certain administrative constraints,
the Corner’s actvity was discontinued with effect from 1st April 2014.
