The Regina Food Bank –

The Art of Putting Hope on the Table. This past year has been one of significant change and transition for the Regina Food Bank.

For only the third time in 31 years there was a transition to a new future with the retirement of wayne Hellquist as CEO of the Regina Food Bank. On behalf of the community we thank wayne for his significant and tireless efforts over the past 8 years.

The Regina Food Bank began in 1982 as only the second food bank in Canada – and for 31 years we have been fighting hunger and feeding hope in Regina and many surrounding communities. And over the course of those 31 years we have continued to innovate and improve our services as the needs in our community have continued to change. At the heart of all we do is ensuring the Regina Food Bank continues to be there to meet the needs of families and individuals affected by hunger and food insecurity in our community.

Feeding a community is much more than the provision of food however. we continue to provide services and supports that address the complex long term issues that create hunger and food insecurity. we do this through an extensive array of valuable educational programs, training and health services opportunities.

we cannot and do not accomplish this without the support of the community. we have many generous donors and tireless volunteers whose invaluable contributions help to sustain our efforts. The Regina Food Bank is very fortunate to have a significant number of dedicated partners and supporters who contribute food and non-food items, funds, and volunteer hours to ensure that we are able to provide food, education and other necessities to those most in need of our help.

we often speak of the Regina Food Bank as a community asset. It is our privilege to be your steward and ambassador to the community, to represent your support and generosity in helping families and individuals who find themselves in need of a hand up from time to time.

we give thanks to all of you who share in our belief in the possibility of a caring community. Together we can fight hunger and feed hope and make a difference in the lives of our neighbours and friends, many of whom turn to the Regina Food Bank for help.

Thank you for putting hope on the table.

Sincerely,

sMedia media aWard

In 2011, sMedia helped to develop the Regina Food Bank’s social media presence through their unique “1 like = $1 dollar” social media campaign. Numerous Regina businesses pledged to give $1 to the Regina Food Bank for every new “like” on their Facebook pages from November until the end of December. This campaign not only raised much needed funds for the holiday season, but introduced a new audience of supporters to the valuable work of the Regina Food Bank.

As the campaign continues to grow, we are very thankful for all the hard work the dedicated and passionate team at sMedia provides in helping us to fight hunger and feed hope.

TD Bank Group VoluNteer aWard

When the Food Bank is looking for volunteers, TD Bank Group is always ready to help out. The annual Food Drive in October, the 12 Days of Christmas campaign, Christmas Gift Wrapping, the Swinging for Supper Golf Tournament, Stuff the Bus, sorting donations or any other event will include volunteers from TD Bank Group. It is impossible to estimate the hundreds of hours that TD Bank Group staff have given to the Regina Food Bank but their enthusiasm and dedication make them our “go-to” group when we are looking for help! Thank you TD Bank Group and all of your staff.

Loblaw CorPorate aWard

One of Loblaw’s Corporate Social Responsibility pillars is to make a positive difference in our community. The Regina Food Bank has been the grateful recipient of hundreds of thousands of pounds of food and non-food items over the years which we are able to distribute to our clients. These donations make it possible for people who are at risk or living in marginalized circumstances to direct their limited financial resources to purchasing healthier food for themselves and their families. The Loblaw companies have also formed partnerships between their stores and local food banks across Canada, raising funds and food through their semi-annual Extra Helping Food Drives. The Regina Food Bank salutes and thanks Loblaw for their ongoing support.

The Co-operators CorPorate aWard

“Concern for community” is one of the Co-operators’ cooperative principles. They have a rich history of giving back to our community through volunteer time and financial contributions. The Regina Food Bank has been the recipient of hundreds of volunteer hours to assist with events, particularly the 12 Days of Christmas campaign. The Co-operators has been a major supporter of the Regina Food Bank’s annual Youth of Regina Food Drive by purchasing Co-op Mac & Cheese. The Co-operators also provides an annual financial contribution to support our ongoing programming.

The Adult Centre for Employment Readiness and Training (ACERT) was created by the Regina Food Bank to house community-based adult educational programs and training opportunities. Over the past year, ACERT has continued to offer a wide range of programming including Computer Training, Financial Management Workshops, Safeway Career Development Program, and Essential Skills Training for Refugees & Immigrants.

At ACERT we are very proud to embrace people of all cultures. From our Canadian First Nations Peoples, to refugees coming from Ethiopia, Bhutan, and Somalia, to immigrants coming from Ukraine, India, and Vietnam. In May 2012, ACERT won the award for Essential Skills Programming with Canada Safeway at the annual Saskatchewan

Literacy Awards of Merit hosted by the Lieutenant-Governor Vaughn Solomon Schofield. This award recognized the efforts of the Safeway Career Development Program to equip people with employability skills and a guaranteed job opportunity with Canada Safeway. We are grateful to Canada Safeway for this partnership opportunity.

ACERT has also continued to expand partnerships with other educational institutions including SIAST Wascana Campus, and the Regina Trades & Skills Centre. This year SIAST has offered several programs on site at ACERT including Apprenticeship Cooking, Short Order Cooking, and Early Childhood Education Level 1. The Regina Trades & Skills Centre offered a Culinary Arts program for both adults and high school students to prepare people for careers in the food service industry. We are very proud to work in association with these organizations to bring high quality educational programming to our community.

In January 2013, ACERT began the development of the Employment

The Annual Youth of Regina Food Drive is a testament to the commitment of the people of Regina who work together in a common cause to help people in need. The Guides and Scouts, who have been steadfast in their commitment to the event which they spearheaded in 1986, are leaders in the organization of the overall event as well as provide youth to go door-to-door to pick up donations made by the public.

Over 3,000 people volunteered in 2012.Volunteers make the Food Drive possible. Over 3,000 people volunteered in 2012 to ensure its success. In addition to going door-to-door, they collect and sort donations at the Fire Halls, at the Safeway Stuff the Bus campaign and at the Food Bank unloading trucks and then sorting the donations for weeks following the event.

The Annual Youth of Regina Food Drive relies on the support of our corporate community. The 2012 Regina campaign saw an amazing 424,000 pounds of food collected, which represents a $1,060,000 investment in food distribution to Regina Food Bank clients.

Regina has taken the honor of winning the Great Canadian Food Fight for the fourth year in a row.For the fourth year in a row, Regina has taken the honour of winning the Great Canadian Food Fight, beating Halifax and Victoria and adding Waterloo in 2012, in the total weight of food raised in a 48 hour period. Regina’s citizens donated 167,784 pounds of food between October 12 and 13.

A huge contributor to the success of the Annual Food Drive is the FCC drive away hunger tour which first took place in September 2004 when an FCC employee in Ontario drove an open-cab tractor and trailer for eight days. Camping along the way, he collected food and donations for local food banks. Since then, FCC employees continue to partner with local schools, businesses, community groups, residents and food banks to fight hunger in Canada.

The success of the Annual Youth of Regina Food Drive is also due to the efforts of many corporate sponsors who provide the necessary finances to conduct the

campaign: our partners from Purolator and Access Communications who collected food; the City of Regina Fire Department and Transit department for their amazing support; schools, teachers and school children who participate in the school challenges; our many media partners who help to generate excitement and enthusiasm; the thousands of volunteers who help collect and sort the mountain of food; and, of course, the citizens of Regina who generously give food and funds to the Regina Food Bank to fight hunger and feed hope in a very tangible way.

The 2013 Annual Youth of Regina Food Drive will be held October 18 and 19 and we will once again be competing with cities across Canada to win the Great Canadian Food Fight.
