1. NEHC Presidents Report 2012 After the euphoria of our successes in 2011 this year’s playing results were somewhat disappointing with no premierships to celebrate. We did however have some solid playing results with nine (9) teams playing in finals and still had the same number of grand finalist teams as last year with four (4).

Facilities Upgrade Over my past 8 years I have concentrated on upgrading our facilities which I had identified as being at the poor end of the scale when I took over in 2003/4 season as president. With a very small clubhouse and a 10 year old sand based pitch I thought it was holding back our membership growth. Since then we have doubled the size of the clubhouse and included a covered viewing deck, upgraded the pitch to a hybrid water base national standard pitch, installed water recycling and pitch irrigation, upgraded the lighting to meet Australian Standards, doubled the size of the grandstand and installed seating and disabled access, new shedding and scoreboard, last year we had new change-rooms and this year we have had a new canteen. These facilities were largely funded by the current Federal Government, current State Government and the Tea Tree Gully Council and are the result of a lot of hard work by the Committee. It was important to also have support from our Club Patron and Vice Patrons and we must thank them. Patron - Miriam Smith, Mayor of the City of Tea Tree Gully; Vice Patrons; Tony Zappia, Federal Member for Makin, Frances Bedford, State Member for Florey, Jennifer Rankine, State Member for Wright, Tom Kenyon, State Member for Newland and Bernie Keane and Barry Winter Councilors for Pedare Ward in the City of Tea Tree Gully Council. In my opinion we now have one of best facilities to play hockey at, in the State and we can look forward to further growth of our membership.

Sponsorship Our major sponsors this year included; Ballast Stone Estate Wines (Wally Gradara), Harvey World Travel Elizabeth ( Elisa Gesualdi), Haighs Chocolates, Hockey World, and Carbine Industries/SA Temp Fence (Phil Shaw and Brigette). Other Sponsors were Andy J Sound, Coca Cola Amatil and Prestige Trophies. Through the year significant donations were also received from our Vice Patrons, Tony Zappia (Federal Member for Makin) and Francis Bedford (State Member for Florey) and Life Member Dale Thompson from Thompson Air conditioning also made a donation to Supporter’s Day. I would like to personally thank all who contributed financially as their financial support has enabled the club to keep our membership fees to minimum which in turn helps with club membership growth.

Membership and Player Development This year the club had 26 registered teams. This represents a 10% growth in juniors and thanks must go Judy Spooner who dropped off club brochures to over 30 schools in our area. Our total membership is now about 450 members. I must also thank our Junior Coordinator, Greg Spooner who was in charge of the promotional and marketing programs initiated prior to Registration Day in February. He did a great job as Junior Coordinator all year. I would also like to thank Rodney Thorpe and Emma Axford who ran our Minkey program again this year. Thanks must also go to Meg Thorpe for the work she does with SAPSASA. The key to a successful club is the effort that is put into Junior Player development and this year Junior Development Training was well conducted by Kym Strawbridge and Terry McLoughlin. We have also identified the need to provide development for our senior coaches and while Kym has been developing the junior coaches we have moved to provide additional senior coaching development for the women’s teams through a new Committee position. I would also like to congratulate our state representatives and in particular our national representatives in Holly Evans - Hockeyroos development squad, and Australian Masters representatives; Janet O’Shea - O’50 Women’s; Dale Thompson - O’60 Men’s and Phil Shaw - O’50 Men’s. We also had nine (9) state junior representatives this year. Congratulations to you all.

5

Team Performance We had 9 teams make the finals with four junior teams, and five senior teams. We achieved solid results with 4 teams playing in grand-finals albeit none were successful. We must be proud of our Premier League Men however who have after winning the flag in 2004 under Ian Wishart’s first year as coach, have now played in 5 grand finals in the last 8 years winning 2 flags and we were again unlucky to lose to Port 0/1 last week. Ian must be congratulated on his coaching and playing record. He polled well in the best and fairest awards at the Hockey SA awards night and may have won if he hadn’t had a significant injury through the year. I also understand we will be losing one of our most valued premier league squad members in Guy Bolton next year as he will be returning back to his home town of Perth and maybe retiring. Guy and his family are greatly loved in our club and they will be sorely missed, we wish you all well.

Additionally our Metro 4 Women met the club’s and their own goal, to give the team a chance of promotion to the next grade, Metro 3 by finishing in second place on the table. We await the outcome on this potential promotion.

Club Volunteers This year we were lucky to obtain the services of Noelene Barry as Club Manager. Noelene has been ably supported by husband David who took on the role of Treasurer and also ground management duties. David, Noelene and the Spooner family were also largely responsible for arguably our best ever Junior Presentation night and I thank them for the work they did. This was a fantastic event with over 300 people attending and we would have been lost without their input so thank you to both families. We also had a great band of volunteers who worked very hard through the year and included; Anne Mail, Tania Bower, Dan Barry, Annette Hyde, the Wells, Axford, Jennings, Millar and Gradara Families. I must also thank and congratulate our Junior Volunteer of the Year award recipients in Jordan Glover and Eloise Spooner. With the club growing in numbers and having larger facilities there is much more to be done by our volunteer group so there may be more duty rosters next year. If you able to help in any way please offer your help to Noelene Barry or Carmel Wells. I would also like to thank the 2011/12 Committee on a great job of administering the club. It is pleasing to see the 2013 Committee has seen the appointment of a number of younger members which shows the foundation of our club is strong and I look forward to our continued development on and off the pitch. Jim Hughes President

2. Treasurers Report Season 2012

Having taken over the Treasurer’s role in April from Roy Evans, it has been a period of learning as well as understanding the financial position and operations of the club. The 2012 year to date has been a tough year for the club, with a reduced number of games played, which has an impact on both revenue from match fees, as well as potentially the canteen and bar takings. Having said that, the numbers that we report for the period 1/11/2011 to 08/10/2012 are still solid and promising. In summary – Total Income $ 232,641.80 Total Expenses $ 236,914.26 Total Loss $ 4,272.46 On the face of it a small loss would appear satisfactory with the reduced games that were played at the club, but there are some factors that need to be taken into consideration. Last year we received a grant of $50,000 for canteen renovations, and this was duly accounted for in last year’s profit and loss, however many of the expenses for that grant occurred in this financial period, approximately $42,500 worth of expenses. These expenses included builders costs, carpeting as well as many items of the whitegoods purchased new. Therefore our small loss turns into a sound profit for the period. Some of the highlights include increased player registrations collected, which incorporates around $5000 collected from outstanding fees from last year, a big thank you for the efforts of Greg Spooner. Canteen receipts were actually up, an amazing effort from all our volunteers, with income of almost $70,000 from our canteen, with a profit estimated at around $34,000, fantastic considering the reduced games at North East. In summary, the club remains in a sound financial position, with good cash reserves and some excellent income and profit levels from the areas of the canteen, uniform and merchandise sales and ground hire to external parties. Thank you for all the support received during the year from the Committee and Roy in handing over the role and answering all of my questions. Dave Barry Treasurer

3. 2012 Premier League Men’s Report

The Premier League Men had another fantastic season this year only just falling short of the ultimate goal, the premiership title. This is the fourth year in a row we have made the grand final which is a very impressive record to have. In the last nine years we have won the title twice, been in the grand final five times and only missed the finals in one of those years. The club and players should be very proud of this record. In this year’s preseason we travelled to the Barossa to play two games on the grass fields against the Barossa Team of the Year and the AMU Hockey Club. A return match was also held at Zulu Park. These trial games have proved very successful and were enjoyed by all and may well become a regular occurrence. This year’s minor round results were very good considering we played only three games for the year with the full squad available. We had an unusual number of injuries and absences that tested the side. This also gave others the opportunity to perform in the Premier League and three players require special mention. Peter Nugent held the backline together and played 19 games for the Premier League while Chris Wells and I were injured and then later while Chris was away with the U/21 Men’s state team. Peter was a very solid performer who used his overhead to great effect and he was unlucky that he did not get the opportunity to play in the Premier League finals. The second player who needs a mention is debutant Brodie Cameron, who at 16 years of age, made a brilliant start to his Premier League career. He quickly established himself in the starting line-up due to his uncanny ability to be in the right place at the right time to score goals and began to push for the leading goal scorer award. The final player who needs a special mention is Adrian Cass who is the Metro 2 goal keeper who found himself making his Premier League debut due to the two keepers above him being unavailable. Adrian quickly adjusted to the speed of the game and helped the team to win 4 out of the 5 games he played in. His commitment to the team saw him skip opportunities playing on the field for the Metro 4’s to avoid any possible injuries while being required to play Premier League. We sincerely thank him for his efforts. Congratulations to the following players who reached Premier League milestones this year. Brodie Cameron – Debut Adrian Cass – Debut Jake Shaw – Debut Guy Bolton – 50 Games Ryan O’Shea – 150 Games Rodney Thorpe – 150 Games

9

Scott Machell – 200 Games Wil Telfer – 250 Games Congratulations to the following Premier League players who made state teams this year. Dalton Casey, Brodie Cameron and Jake Shaw were selected in the State U/16 Schoolboys team. Chris Wells was selected in the U/21 Men’s team as well as the Hotshots squad. The 2012 North East Premier League Men’s team consisted of 25 players: Adrian Cass, Ben Sutherland, Brady O’Shea, Brodie Cameron, Chris Toonen, Christopher Wells, Colin Stain, Craig Machell, Dalton Casey, Daniel Barry, Dwayne Rowley, Dylan Evans (VC), Guy Bolton, Ian Wishart, Jake Shaw, Michael Wells, Nathan Jennings, Patrick Hughes, Patrick Sutherland, Peter Nugent, Rodney Thorpe, Ryan O’Shea, Scott Machell, Thomas Gregory, and Will Telfer (Captain) Farewell to Guy Bolton who announced his retirement after our last game this year. He has been a star performer who has dazzled us with his skills, his vision and his ability to eliminate defenders by passing them the ball and then stealing it off them as he runs past! Bolts will be greatly missed and we thank him for his contribution to the club and wish him and his family all the best for the future and their return journey home to Perth. Once again I must thank Jeremy Hopkins for his role as Assistant Coach, without whom I could not coach the team effectively while still playing in the team myself. Jeremy does a great job and I often find myself repeating and reinforcing what Jeremy has said at half time and full time team talks so we are certainly on the same wavelength. Thanks also to David Short who took on the role of managing the team this year and ensured everything ran smoothly on the sidelines. Looking forward to 2013 and continuing our exceptional performance.

4. 2012 PLW Report

After the success of 2011 the 2012 season was filled with promise. We were on our way up the ladder and were surly destined for a finals berth for the first time in more than 10 years. Unfortunately at the end of round 27 it was yet another season that would be chalked up in the “could have been” column. We started the season off well with a victory over Adelaide, something that this club has never done before. In sport though it never takes long to get brought back to earth, a 6-0 thrashing in round 2. We finished 6th at the end of the minor rounds, one place lower than 2011. Whilst our position on the table would suggest that we only fell back one place the real measure should be the distance we are from the best teams in the competition. In 2012 the gap between the best teams in the competition and the Zuluettes grew. A few things did not go right in 2012 such as: 1. I simply got pre-season wrong; 2. Significant and long term injuries tested player depth; 3. Attitude of the group was at times poor. Not wishing to focus on the negatives of 2012 there were many positives. 2012 saw the Premier League Zuluette debut of: 1. Amy Mark (7 games) 2. Tara Woodward (7 games) 3. Leila Mattner (6 games) 4. Mikayla Gradara (5 games) (Mikayla did play one game in 2011 but did not get on the pitch) 5. Sam Hogan (4 games) 6. Madeline Stewart (3 games) 7. Pamela Unsworth (2 games) Amy, Mikayla and Sam certainly being the standout junior performers with Madeline showing that she will have strong PL credentials in the years to come. Much of the credit for the improvement in these players must go to Terry who developed and encouraged them to be the best that they could be. The free flow of information between PL & M1s also allowed for better knowledge of the players coming into PL to assist coaches to get the best out of new players. 2012 also saw a significant improvement of the connectivity between PL & M1. The connectivity is a very long way from perfect but a significant step forward has been taken again thanks in a large part to Terry.

11

The individual performances of Kendra Selvanderan and Alison Stock must also not go unnoticed. Kendra was consistently one of the top performers within our group as has been rewarded with her team mates awarding her the Heggie Trophy as the best Premier League player at North East breaking Holly Evans strangle hold on the trophy. Congratulations also to Kendra for her role in the 2012 u21 State Women who played in the National Final. Ali Stock’s performance especially in the second half of the season was also exceptional. Her work rate, sense of team and willingness to be part of the structure created opportunities and inspired others. Ali’s performance resulted in the closest finish to the Best & Fairest count in many years finishing just 6 votes (out of 232) behind Kendra for top honours. Individual congratulations should also go to the following 2012 representative players: 1. Holly Evans (Australia, AIS) 2. Janet O’Shea (Australian Veterans) 3. Kendra Selvanderan (U21, played in the national final); 4. Jade Ferguson (U21) 5. Alison Stock (U18) 6. Kelsey Squire (U18) 7. Sami Hogan (U18, Victoria) 8. Amy Mark (U16 School Girls) 9. Mikayla Gradara (U15) In 2012 we also were able to work out where we went wrong. The things that we were able to change in the second half of the season were changed and the results started to follow. Some issues such as pre-season we could not fix until 2013 but the challenge and learnings are there. The challenge is the implementation of these learnings in 2013. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Heather Cosh for her support as PL team manager in 2012, Wally for his work as Women’s co-ordinator and Ken Millar as Teams co-ordinator. A special individual thanks must also go to Terry who stepped up to the plate this year and provided invaluable support to the PL & M1 teams through his role as Assistant PL Squad Coach. I owe Terry a debt of gratitude for his desire to succeed and tireless work (especially the summer skills program). I would also like to thank all of the Premier League and Metro 1 players for their efforts in 2012. It was at times a challenging year but one that we can learn from and grow in 2013. 5. NEHC Junior Report - 2012 Directly following the 2011 season a number of Junior players took part in the “Summer Session” Development program conducted by Terry McLoughlin and Wally Gradara during the Oct-Jan summer period. These sessions took place at both the NEHC and a number of country locations including Port Pirie, Kadina and the Barossa Valley. Many Junior Players also took the opportunity to join in the Senior Women’s pre season training sessions. A number of marketing / promotional events were undertaken in the lead up to Registration day in February. These included, press advertising, shopping centre promotions, email broadcasting to existing members & contacts as well as brochure creation and distribution to over 30 schools in the TTG & Salisbury council regions. Continuing promotions throughout the year included support of the TTG schools carnival, TTG SAPSASA Fun Day, TTG Going for Gold program along with the regular follow up and conversion of the resultant new enquiries received. Junior membership currently totals some 180 members, this figure represents a 10% growth over 2011 figures. 15% of the total Junior membership comprising country based players encompassing areas from the Barossa Valley to as far afield as the Riverland, Yorke Peninsula, Port Pirie and Whyalla. Importantly, it is worth also noting that some 15% of the Junior membership is currently playing in both the Senior and Junior competitions. The club entered a total of 12 teams in the Hockey Metro Junior competition for 2012 which places NEHC in the top 2 clubs promoting Hockey in the Adelaide Metropolitan region. The teams entered comprised U9 Black (Mixed), U9 Red (Mixed), U11 Black (Mixed), U11 Red (Mixed), U13 Boys, U13 Girls, U15A Boys, U15A Girls, U15B Boys, U15B Girls, U18 Boys and U18 Girls. While numbers were initially limited in the U13 and U15B teams, continuing promotion and development as a result of the creation of U13-U15B squads resulted in strong numbers being achieved by mid way through the season. In the process many U13 players have been able to play in both the U13 and U15 competitions and in the process, continue their development at an accelerated pace. Final playing numbers for each team are represented in the table below.

Prior to the season’s commencement an update to the “Coaches and Managers Duties, Responsibilities & Information” document was completed and distributed to all Junior coaches. As part of this distribution a dedicated push to promote the need for all Coaches and Managers involved with junior players to obtain a Police Check / Clearance was also performed. A total of 21 personnel now have police clearances lodged with the club. While much effort has gone into managing this requirement it should be recognised that the number of clearances lodged still only represents some 50% of the total clearances required. A continuing effort is therefore required in this area to ensure that all personnel involved with Junior players have lodged an appropriate and current clearance. The Junior Coaching / Management group for 2012 comprised the following; U18 Men Coach - Ben Sutherland Manager – Michelle Cameron

U18 Women Coach - Nicole Mentha Manager - Sharon Campbell

U15A Men Coach - Nathan Jennings Manager – Michelle Cameron

U15A Women Coach - Wally Gradara Manager - Greg Spooner

U15B Men Coach - Chris Wells Manager - Mark Chambers

U15B Women Coach - Kym Strawbridge Manager –Julianne Caust

U13 Men Coach - Michael Wells Manager - Jordan Glover

U13 Girls Coach - Robin & Jake Shaw Manager - Lisa Axford

U11 Mixed Coach - Jacquie Lavis / Simon McElroy

U11 Mixed Coach - Jason Connor

U9 Mixed Coach - Matt Toonen

U9 Mixed Coach - Margaret Grieve

U9 Mixed Coach - Lesley Dean

The club also supported the Independent Schools (ISAA) Hockey competition during Terms 2 & 3 by way of coordination, staffing of grounds and the provision of umpires. Fixtures for the Friday Night Junior Comp for U15 – U18 players left something to be desired by way of skewing match locations away from the three largest contributors of Junior players (North East, Seacliff & Adelaide Hockey Clubs) towards the lowest contributors (Woodville, Port Adelaide & West Beach).

14

Continuing representation on the HME Junior Committee ensured the existence of a B grade comp for both the U15 Boys and Girls and thereby avoided the poor situation of 2011 where there was a wide disparity between various teams in the competition. Further discussions re the grading of teams have occurred to also benefit the upcoming 2013 comp. Many permit applications were created, submitted and approved during the year which ensured that a number of players were able to play at an appropriate level along with ensuring that Team numbers remained viable in all age groups. The club entered the U13 State Championships and coordinated participation of it’s players, coaches and selectors in the U15-18 Zone Championships. 2012 represented a change in Zone distribution with NEHC now becoming part of the “Mariner” group along with the Pt Adelaide, Seacliff, Grange and Woodville Hockey Clubs. While the initial reaction by our members was one of concern, the overall experience was much better than expected. As part of this process the club was afforded a high level of engagement with the opportunity to provide selectors, coaches and of course, players to the Mariners Team. As a result Kym Strawbridge, Ian Jennings & Wally Gradara were engaged as zone selectors with Wally also coaching the U15 Girls Mariners Team which ended up as Grand Finalists. The following Zulu’s were selected to play in the National Champs in the U16 Schools State teams: Amy Mark (Schoolgirls), Dalton Casey, Jake Shaw, Brodie Cameron and Sam Carr (Schoolboys). The following players were all selected in State teams or squads: U13 – Simon Wells, U15 - Matthew Jennings, Mikayla Gradara & Latasha Cugley. The following Junior teams all reached the finals of the Hockey Metro competition in 2012; U13 Boys (Grand Finalists)

U15A Girls (Preliminary Finalists)

U15B Girls (Semi Finalists)

U15A Boys (Semi Finalists)

U15B Boys (Semi Finalists)

Nathan and Matthew Jennings were recognized for awards at the Hockey Supporters SA Dinner this year. Nathan was awarded the Junior Umpire Encouragement Award and Matthew was awarded the Junior Male Athlete Encouragement Award. Area for improvement include the need to resist a developing tendency within some of the teams to forfeit at Seacliff because of the distance of travel required when running at anything less than full strength, this happened on more than one occasion this year and sends out a poor participation message to our own members as well as other clubs who in turn may feel justified in developing a similar philosophy when playing at NEHC. Support and cooperation by coaches, managers and supporters between age groups and grades was poor at times, the development of a squad arrangement certainly

15

helped the U13 & U15B Girls group and proved to be a shining example to others as the season developed. Continuing “policy” development should remain a high priority focus for the club particularly in relation to player numbers / team nomination, Senior Comp involvement by Junior players, promotion / demotion amongst senior teams of Junior players, communication tools for players / parents / coaches, Coaching accreditation / development and membership growth and retention.
