LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Multiple sclerosis is a life-altering disease that affects each person in a unique and different way. And because MS short circuits the central nervous system, it divides minds from bodies, pulls people from their lives and away from one another. MS is a destroyer of connection. But it is possible to build connections that MS cannot destroy. Our connections raise questions, find answers, bring knowledge and provide hope to the millions of people affected by MS worldwide. Every connection we make is a small victory, and together, our small victories will create larger ones that will help end MS forever.

The National MS Society’s Greater Delaware Valley Chapter is a prominent force in forging connections among local people with MS, their friends and family who raise awareness and funds; health professionals who treat those with MS; and, researchers who work to stop the disease, restore the function it takes and end MS forever. In just over two decades since the FDA approved the first treatment for MS, it has moved from being an untreatable disease to one where there are at least nine treatment options for those with relapsing MS, the most common form of the disease, with even more new therapies speeding through the pipeline offering hope to people with all forms of the disease.

The theme for this annual report is a Year to Celebrate and in 2012, we had plenty of reasons to feel positive. Just five years ago, there were only five treatments for people living with MS. By the end of the year there were nine. This is big news – it wasn’t that long ago that there were no treatments for people living with MS.

The Society’s investment in research has laid the groundwork for the treatments we currently have and it is playing a critical role for those that we will become available very soon.

At the local level, we devoted over 30%, more than $3 million dollars, of the funds raised locally to research projects, a higher percentage than any other chapter in the country. We devoted these additional funds to

research projects while still providing day-to-day support for people living with MS right here in our chapter area.

That support included direct financial assistance worth nearly $400,000 to 485 different clients in need including home health care, rehabilitation services and counseling. In addition, more than 1,700 MS clients and family members attended a variety of programs in 2012 including a wellness program, two treatment updates and a program on the financial and relationship realities of life with MS.

A major focus of ours in 2012 was taking the MS Society to the people we serve. To that end, we held 29 community outreach days where we were able to work with more than 140 clients in person, and supported 31 self-help groups with more than 400 active members.

It is important to note that none of these victories would have been possible if not for the financial commitment of the local MS community. This past year saw some successful very events, in fact our largest fundraising event, Bike MS: City to Shore Ride, raised $5.6 million, just shy of the all-time record we set in 2008 of $5.8 million.

So yes, it is a year to celebrate – a year that would not have been possible without the hard work of our volunteers, staff, event participants, donors and most importantly, people living with MS and their families. Your connections keep us moving towards a world free of MS. Thank you for all you do.

Sincerely,

Tami L. Caesar President

We educated the community through the “MS Experience”, a program that enables participants to experiment with the symptoms of MS. Presented in 13 venues at our major fundraising events, two chapter programs, three community events, and three sites during MS Awareness Week, the MS Experience is helping us grow our movement of supporters by increasing understanding of the disease

We conducted 12 presentations to chapter service providers and community groups, providing an in-depth understanding of MS to a total of 250 people

15 allied health professionals enhanced their understanding of MS through the support of the Know MS Professional Education Scholarship. This service provides funding for certification fees or attending an MS-related conference

We held 17 social and educational programs for people living with MS, families affected by MS and service providers including family fun days, a series for the newly diagnosed and informative updates on disease modifying therapies

We provided four scholarships to first-time college students living with MS or who have a parent living with MS

The HomeAble project provided major home modifications for 28 clients who needed to make their residences more accessible, totaling $100,000

Through our counseling program, we served 52 clients who could not have afforded counseling without the chapter’s support

Through our care management program we served 78 people with one-on-one in person support tailored to each person’s individual needs

The chapter awarded $250,000 in community impact grants to MS Centers and other collaborative partners that provide care for people living with MS

Our chapter was host to 31 MS Connections Groups (self-help groups) throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania and South Jersey. In addition, we also hosted three professionally-led and this year also heralded the development of young couples group which focuses on social outings

29 community outreach days and a community resource fair were held at varying locations within our chapter boundaries, allowing our clients ready access to our knowledgeable services staff. Our events this year focused on serving rural and underserved communities with 16 of these events held in urban underserved communities and seven of them held in our more rural communities

The Greater Delaware Valley Chapter in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Chapters of the Society expanded MS Works, an employment program for individuals living with MS in Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey. More than 70 employment consultations were provided through MS Works. The program provides career counseling, job seeking skills training, explanation of legal rights, referrals to local and federal agencies, resources, symptom management techniques, and programs to help make informed decisions about employment situations

Addressing the daily challenges of everyone living with MS is at the core of the National MS Society’s mission. It is our goal to connect people living with MS and their families to an array of programs and services to meet their individual needs.

2012 HIGHLIGHTS

Page 4: ANNUAL REPORT 2012 - National Multiple Sclerosis Society · Multiple sclerosis is a life-altering disease that affects each person in a unique and ... pipeline offering hope to people

The National MS Society continues to propel research forward with a comprehensive strategy aimed at stopping MS, restoring function and ending MS forever. This year we invested $44 million in over 350 new and ongoing projects from discovery research to the Society’s drug development efforts through Fast Forward®. Lives were changed in 2012 with the introduction of a second oral MS therapy, the launch of new collaborative research efforts, and significant results of recent studies promising more options in 2013 for people living with MS. RESEARCH

The approval of a second oral therapy for relapsing forms of MS and other emerging treatments progressing through the development pipeline

The launch of the International Progressive MS Collaborative, the largest effort to date to speed research to stop progressive forms of MS

The discovery of the possible immune attack target in people with MS, which may lead to new understanding of the disease

The completion of the first human trial of an experimental therapy targeting myelin repair

Progress in restoring functions using innovative rehabilitation techniques, including memory enhancement using a technique involving stories and imagery to solidify learning, and improving balance and mobility

Advances in uncovering MS triggering factors, bringing us closer to finding ways to prevent the disease

THIS YEAR SAW

Vitamin D Research CampaignAt the local level, our chapter devoted over 30% of funds raised locally -- more than $3 million dollars -- to research projects, a higher percentage than any other chapter in the country. We are happy to report we have received donations and pledges to fulfill our two-year campaign to fund a $1.3 million Vitamin D clinical trial. This trial aims to determine if taking high doses of vitamin D can reduce the frequency of MS attacks and whether they are a safe addition to standard MS therapies.

Multi-Year Research Commitments by Strategic Priority The Society’s funding portfolio reflects the scientific community’s recommendations on the most promising and meritorious research to fund. Funding allocated to each priority area fluctuates annually depending upon promising research progress and direction.

ADVOCACY

The past year was an extremely active one for MS advocacy at the state and federal levels. Our government relations

committee was hard at work lobbying for the rights of people living with MS with elected officials at every level.

Some highlights include:

NJ Governor Chris Christie was selected as the National MS Society’s 2012 Governor of the Year

In 2012, Governor Chris Christie signed the New Jersey Multiple Sclerosis Task Force Bill, a statewide task force that will look at the impacts MS has on residents living with the disease and will make recommendations, both regulatory and legislatively, to address those issues

Buena Vista Township Mayor Sue Barber was named the chapter’s representative to the MS Task Force

MS Task Force served as a national model of legislation and was selected as one of the three state platform issues

The chapter hosted an open house with service provider, Total Rehab and Fitness, with Congressman Jon Runyan to begin a conversation about the importance of on-going rehab for people living with MS

Congressman Runyan and his chief of staff who lives with MS, Stacy Palmer-Barton, were featured in an advocacy video produced by students from the Art Institute of Philadelphia on behalf of the chapter

PA launched its first MS Proclamation Blitz across the state with over 14 towns and cities offering MS proclamations to raise awareness and build relationships with local legislators

New website, Facebook and Twitter pages were launched in PA and NJ to engage new activists

DEVELOPMENT

In addition to raising the funds needed to provide a diverse range of programs and services for our clients, our fundraising events in 2012 also raised awareness of multiple sclerosis throughout our community. Activities included demonstrating the “MS experience” at several large Walk MS sites; the MS champions program at Bike MS: City to Shore Ride; mission updates at all bike ride meetings; and advocacy volunteers at Walk MS sites in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Bike MS: City to Shore Ride 2012 generated $5.6 million in revenue, celebrating its second most successful year to date. The 2012 ride brought the event’s fundraising total to more than $55 million in its 33-year history

In only its third year, MuckRuckus MS, now known as MuckFest MS, raised over $1 million. Held in Newtown Square, this boot-camp style obstacle course drew almost 4,000 runners, most of them new to the Society; and forged several important new community and volunteer partnerships

Another relatively new event, Zumbathon for MS, raised nearly $90,000 and drew 300 participants in only its second year

Walk MS generated nearly $2.1million in revenue and attracted 12,000 walkers and volunteers making it the largest and most accessible event

Challenge Walk MS celebrated its 10th anniversary by raising $260,000 with only 118 walkers. A committee is currently analyzing trends and looking into the future of Challenge Walk MS

The MS Leaders Circle recruited 40 Philadelphia area leadership volunteers to raise $95,000 and launch a new annual community service project to help families with MS. As a result, 10 families coping with the challenges of MS received help with yard work and household maintenance while an additional 40 families affected by MS were able to take part in a new program about the Hidden Effects of MS

The Women Against MS (WAMS) Luncheon honored Dr. Amy Gutmann, president of the University of Pennsylvania and featured a keynote speech by author and motivational speaker Zoe Koplowitz. The luncheon generated more than $150,000 in revenue

ENGAGING OUR

COMMUNITY

In 2012, the chapter continued to integrate volunteers in meaningful roles at every level of our organization. Volunteers support the chapter in many ways: fundraising events, office work including phone calls, mailings and filing, inventory, packing and unpacking supplies at the warehouse, driving trucks, photography, leadership roles, speakers and educators, committee members and special projects in marketing, human resources, education, event planning and more.

More than 2,000 volunteers assisted in our fundraising events and almost 500 volunteered on committees, as self-help group leaders, as activists, at our office, warehouse and on special projects

The Business Advisory Council continues to help shape and implement employment services. Members contribute to the bi-monthly Inside Employment e-news and MSWorks LinkedIn Networking group.

More than 20 people volunteered to share their stories in meeting with legislators and their staff members

The PA Government Relations Committee members helped map legislators to help identify and build key relationships

The chapter’s intern program continued to grow in 2012 with 17 undergraduate and graduate-level college students working alongside our staff in every department, gaining valuable work experience and supporting chapter initiatives

Youth groups such as the National Honor Society, Key Club, Jr. ROTC, fraternities, sororities and other service clubs helped set up and clean up at events, assembled mailings and rider numbers for Bike MS and brought youthful energy and enthusiasm to their assignments

Students from the Art Institute of Philadelphia collaborated with chapter staff to produce a video about advocacy featuring Congressman Jon Runyan and his chief of staff who lives with MS
