A Parent’s Love

The speech below was given at Kingsley House’s Annual Friendraising Luncheon in April 2013 by parent Joycelyn Bell.

Myname is JoycelynBell andmy four yearolddaughter Janae is a student in theHead Start program. You cannot imagine the amount of care and love my daughter has received here at Kingsley House.

Attheageof2monthsoldJanaewasdiagnosedwithararebraindisorderbythenameofDandy-WalkerSyndrome.BecauseofJanae’sconditionsheisnon-verbalandnon-mobile.At theageof three,Janae’s therapist suggestedthatweenrollher inachilddevelopmentcentersothatshecouldcontinuereceivinghertherapeuticservices.Asyoucanimagine,thiswasaverydifficultthingformyhusbandandItodo.Janaehadalways been cared for by family at home.

Janae’stherapistrecommendedseveralHeadStartcentersincludingKingsleyHouse.CanyouimaginethattheotherHeadStartCenterswouldnotevenconsideracceptingJanaebecauseofhermultipledisabilities?KingsleyHouse,however,didnothesitate.TheywerenotafraidoftheamountofcarethatJanaewouldneed.Theymadesurethateverythingthat Janae needed was in place, including providing her with a personal chef, Ms. Debra, andapersonalcareattendant,Ms.SusanPorcheor“Ms.Sue”asthekidscallher.WhenIthink about Ms. Sue it is like thinking about family. Ms. Sue is here with Janae today and ItrulythankherforthelovingandnurturingcarethatshegivestoJanaeonadailybasis.Ms. Sue has been working at Kingsley House for the past 41 years.

Noone atKingsleyHouse treats Janae anydifferently than theother children andeveryone treats her like she is a person. What makes me happy as a Mom is that my daughter is included in everything atKingsleyHouse. The staff atKingsleyHousedoes not ever say “oh no Janae can’t do this or Janae can’t participate in that” because of her handicaps. When all of the other children finger paint, Janae finger-paints, when alloftheotherchildrenmakeMardiGrasmasks,JanaemakesaMardiGrasmask.Ifthe children are outside playing jump rope, Ms. Sue puts the rope in Janae’s hand and turnsits.Tosomeofyouthismaynotseemlikemuch,buttousitiseverything.MyhusbandandIarejustlikeanyotherparents.WewantourchildtobeincludedandsheisindeedincludedatKingsleyHouse.ThispastFebruary,JanaewastheArchDuchessintheroyalcourtoftheSweetheartBall.IhaveseenJanaechangeandgrowbeinghereatKingsleyHouse.ShethrivesoffoftheotherkidsandImusttellyouthattheyarevery protective over her and they love her very much. Janae is well known throughout Kingsley House not just in her classroom but throughout the building. Janae has gained everyone’s love and respect.

This summer Janae will transition from Kingsley House’s Head Start program toKindergartenandImustadmitthatitwillbeascarytimeformyhusbandandme.AtKingsleyHouse,IknowthattheylookoutforJanae.WecangotoourjobsandknowthatJanaeiswelltakencareof.IcannotthinkofanyotherplacethatwilltakecareofJanae like Kingsley House has taken care of her.
