1. THE YEAR 2011 IN RETROSPECT A new year, a new beginning. Prof. Dr Bart HME Vinck started as our new Head of Department, after a long selection process. The Department would like to express their gratitude to Dr Maggi Soer, who kept the Department running as acting head for a long time. The new Head of Department implemented right at the beginning of his term a lot of important changes and measures: A new format for the postgraduate programmes, a reduction of the existing high administration load, a revision of the time tables to increase the research output, and a new approach to optimize the personal development of all staff. The year 2011 was also the last year that the dual program, where students can graduate as both Audiologists and Speech-Language Therapists, was offered by our department. We are very happy to welcome are new Audiologist staff member Ms Anel Visser, who will be involved in the field of central auditory processing disorders and cochlear implant. Anel will be added to the cochlear implant team. Prof. Vinck also was appointed as the new Director of the University of Pretoria Cochlear Implant Unit. The team wants to thank Prof. dr Swart for his many years of service to the team. Fortunately his contribution will continue. The name of the team was changed to the University of Pretoria Cochlear Implant Unit (UP-CIU). Following a UP-CIU Bosberaad, the decision was taken to change the management structure and to optimize the visibility of the team to the outside world. The decision was taken to give the department full access to the budget cost-centres of the team. We also feel sorry that our Dean, Prof. Sandra Klopper left the University of Pretoria, the end of the year 2011. She was appointed as new deputy Chancellor at the University of Cape Town. We thank her for all the support she gave to the Department and we wish her a very good time in Cape Town at UCT, and with her family. My first year, was a year of challenges, a year of learning, a year of living without my family, a year of great joy. I would like to thank every single staff member for their support and help. I belong here now! Thank you all for being such a wonderful team. Thank you so much, Baie dankie,
Bai e d
