patient care experience Simply put, quality in health care is providing the right care at the right time for the best possible result. LMH’s commitment to quality means patient care is always supported by the latest evidence-based literature, clinical practice guidelines, advanced technology, and of course, a healthy dose of compassion. LMH is held to the same rigorous standards as the nation’s largest hospitals and health systems. Thanks to a hospital-wide focus on quality care, LMH consistently meets or exceeds national averages for nearly every quality and safety measure. From the hospital’s executives and Board of Trustees, to its Quality Committee members, physicians, staff and helpful

volunteers, everyone at LMH is dedicated to performing among the country’s top hospitals…and it shows. For example, 100 percent of cancer patients treated at LMH in 2011 said they would recommend The Oncology Center to friends and family. And, in addition to a wide variety of clinical quality and safety measures, LMH consistently excels in key indicators like how quickly patients receive the care they need, the quality of their outcomes and how satisfied they are with their experiences. The hospital shares quality measures on its website, so patients in Lawrence and surrounding communities can make informed health care decisions and feel comfortable about choosing LMH.

Growth Matters

LMH Opens Heart Failure Clinic

In the U.S. today, more than 5 million people have congestive heart failure (CHF), and the number is growing according to the National Institutes of Health. In response to the steady rise of CHF cases in the community and the need to prevent unnecessary hospital readmissions, LMH opened its Congestive Heart Failure Clinic in 2011. The clinic complements LMH’s high-ranking cardiac services by targeting the health needs of CHF patients. Highly skilled nurse practitioners and pharmacists work together to monitor symptoms, manage medications and provide important education for patients who visit the clinic.

Grand Opening: LMH Eudora Medical Park

With a 45 percent population increase over the last decade, patients in Eudora needed greater access to primary care and outpatient services. In 2011, LMH answered the call with the grand opening of LMH Eudora Medical Park. The 10,500 square-foot facility accommodates new and improved services the old office could not. LMH Eudora Medical Park houses primary care and radiology (Eudora Family Care), physical rehabilitation (LMH Eudora Therapy Services), and an on-site pharmacy…all in one convenient location right off K-10.

As part of the hospital’s efforts

to strengthen the system of care

throughout the community,

LMH added a sixth primary care

practice in 2011: The Internal

Medicine Group (IMG) at the

To increase access to the quality services provided by the Endoscopy Center (LMH’s gastrointestinal lab) and the Pain Management Clinic, LMH moved both operations from LMH South to the main hospital campus in 2011. Consolidated inpatient and outpatient services in one location makes LMH physicians more readily available to patients in need.

Milestones Matterembracing a commitment to compassionate patient care

The Oncology Center at LMH commemorated its first decade anniversary in September 2011. Hundreds of patients, survivors and loved ones joined Center staff, LMH leadership and hospital supporters to pay tribute to the journeys they’ve shared and the many lives touched by cancer in the community. Thousands of patients from all over Kansas and 29 other states have come to The Oncology Center at LMH for treatment. People often travel to Lawrence for cancer care at LMH because The Oncology Center offers more than 150 cancer research trials – advanced, individualized therapy options not available everywhere. The Oncology Center at LMH is equipped with sophisticated diagnostic technology and pathology, enabling specialists to detect many cancers and risks before they grow and spread. The Center also offers hereditary cancer risk assessments to help identify individuals appropriate for genetic testing. In 2011, the Center tested for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome, as well as Lynch Syndrome, which causes an increased risk for early onset colorectal cancer and other cancer types.

Shortly before The Oncology Center’s first decade celebration, LMH became home to Mario’s Closet, a special shop providing custom solutions to help men and women fight the visible effects of cancer. A gift from Mario V. Chalmers Foundation and the LMH Endowment Association, Mario’s Closet offers salon services, wigs, scarves, prosthetics, skin care products, and other gifts and accessories for cancer patients. It is the only shop of its kind in Lawrence. To celebrate the grand opening, LMH hosted a ribbon-cutting

ceremony in July 2011. NBA and former KU basketball star Mario Chalmers and his family attended. “This is very close to me,” Chalmers said about Mario’s Closet and why his foundation was inspired to make the contribution. “My best friend Paul Peterson’s mom died of breast cancer, so this is something we are doing in honor of her now.”

“Lawrence Memorial Hospital gave me options, including the right cancer research trial. They gave me hope and saved my life.”

Innovation Mattersadvancing technology for improved patient care and quality

In July 2011, LMH was one of only 154 U.S. hospitals to be named “Most Wired” in a national survey published by Hospitals & Health Networks magazine. The study assessed nearly 1,400 hospitals and health systems on progress toward adopting more advanced health information technology, including electronic health records (EHRs), wireless networks, computerized physician order entry and more.

“Being named one of the country’s Most Wired hospitals is an honor,” said LMH President and CEO Gene Meyer. “It recognizes our long-term vision that LMH distinguishes itself over other providers through the use of information technology.”

Records

• LMH became the first hospital in the region, and one of only 15 hospitals in the state, to attest to meaningful use of EHRs.1 For meeting 2011 meaningful use objectives in the first year of the federal incentive program, LMH received a $1.6 million Medicare incentive payment.

• LMH is among 304 health systems worldwide that have achieved Stage 6 of the Electronic Medical Records Adoption ModelSM, putting LMH in the top 6.4 percent of 5,337 hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics™ Database. HIMSS reports that most U.S. hospitals (45 percent) are in currently in Stage 3.2

advancing technology for improved patient care and qualityLab Expansion Enables More In-House Testing It was a year in the making, and in May 2011, LMH unveiled its newly remodeled and widely expanded laboratory. As the hospital’s hub of pathology – where hundreds of thousands of tests are performed every year to diagnose and study disease – the new lab and its technologically advanced equipment now accommodate more in-house testing than ever before. The space also includes a new waiting area for patients and more private spaces for blood draws. The laboratory at LMH is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Its 75 employees include highly skilled and accredited pathologists, technologists and phlebotomists, all of whom share LMH’s steadfast commitment to quality and patient safety.

In 2011, the LMH Breast Center reached its goal to offer digital imaging

technology at all three Breast Center locations: LMH South, LMH West and

now, the LMH hospital campus.

LMH Breast Center: Now with Digital Mammography in Three Locations

Digital imaging boosts quality of care by allowing physicians to view results in greater detail. It also enables greater collaboration among care team physicians by allowing radiologists and surgeons, for example, to view the same images simultaneously regardless of their locations.

Connections Matter

LMH Community Care Navigators Reduce Readmission Rates

Since LMH started its community care navigator program, the hospital has lowered 30-day readmission rates among the uninsured, Medicaid and chronic disease population it serves – in some cases by as much as 68 percent. By creating low cost, high impact connections between hospital care, primary care, specialty care, home care and community resources, LMH’s community care navigators are coordinating patient care for better outcomes, lower costs and higher quality health care. The most recent 12-month data shows a 9 percent hospital-wide drop in 30-day readmission rates for acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) and 7 percent for heart failure, as compared to historical rates.

It’s already helped a family as

LMH launched an online course

to help moms and dads prepare

for baby’s birth. One American

couple overseas took the course

last fall when they had difficulty

finding an English-speaking

obstetrician who would answer

all their questions. To them, the

LMH e-course was a “saving

at their own pace in the comfort
