ART IN HEALTHCARE: PHILOSOPHY

At Art in Healthcare we believe in the healing influence of artwork.

Art in a healthcare setting can:

• Induce positive physiological and psychological changes in clinical outcomes• Reduce drug consumption• Shorten length of stay in hospital• Increase job satisfaction• Promote better doctor-patient relationships• Improve mental healthcare• Develop health practitioners’ empathy across gender and cultural diversity1

Art works transform spaces and area very effective and extremely lowcost way of making life moreenjoyable and stimulating for thosewho spend time in hospitals, carehomes or clinics, either as visitors, staff, or of course patients. Art in

Healthcare aims to enliven environments thatare otherwise lifeless and even intimidating.

Despite difficult financial circumstances, theyear has seen very encouraging achievements. The staff has worked tirelessly to seek morecontracts and stimulate interest in our activitiesOne of the most exciting developments of theyear has been the work of student internshipsunder the guidance of Assistant Director, TrevorJones and the formation of an EdinburghUniversity and Edinburgh College of Art StudentSociety, which will become a model for otheruniversities around Scotland

Membership of the Board has changed duringthe year and some invaluable members haveretired, but new colleagues who bring new skills

have replaced them and I believe the Board isvery well equipped to carry forward next year’sprogramme. This is my last year as Chairmanand I would like to highlight the enormous help and support I have received from theBoard, the staff and Friends throughout theyears. The organisation has changed in this time and activities have grown despite thecurrent economic climate. Our principalobjectives for the future are to expand theprogramme of loans to healthcare servicesthroughout Scotland and to encouragecontemporary artists to develop their interests in this field. Alongside of this we must evaluatethe impact of art works on patient well-being.Margaret Hurcombe and her team have achievedan enormous amount with minimal resources. I am very aware of the gratitude that is owed to the Friends of the organisation and thoseTrusts and other bodies that have helpedsupport us financially, without this none of this work would be possible.

THE COLLECTION

Our mission is to get as much high-quality visual art as possible into hospitals, hospices and otherhealthcare facilities in Scotland. Art, we believe, has a powerful role to playin the health service, from providing a stimulating environment for patients, relatives and staff, to aiding certain kinds of therapy, and even helping to speed up recovery.

We regularly receive gifts of artworks from artists or their families, but this yearwe were thrilled to accept a collection ofsixteen works from the estate of MarjorieIna Campbell. She was born in China, the daughter of medical missionaryparents, but her father’s death during the Sino-Japanese war led to the return of the family, mother and two daughters,to Edinburgh in 1939. Marjorie became a painter, illustrator, teacher, lecturer, quilter, photographer and designer forcopper-wheel engraving on glass. She died in 1999, leaving a rich legacy of her work in the visual arts, textiles, glass decorative design and form, writings and poetry.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Dr Conor Maguire, consultant physician in careof the elderly at the Royal Victoria in Edinburgh,is a contract holder with Art in Healthcare. Butfor financial constraints, he says: “I would fill up every wall in the hospital.” He has evenmanaged to build a painting into the exerciseregime of one of his Parkinson’s patients.

“I said to him: ‘There’s a lovely painting near my office.’ And he now walks to that painting as part of his mobility exercise. To me that’s fantastic”

Acclaimed artist, John C Brown has created the newest Prestigious Print for Art inHealthcare. Inspired by a recent trip to Mexicoand by the life of artist Frida Kahlo, Flowers for Frida exemplifies Brown’s distinctive, colourful and expressive style.

Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter. Perhapsbest known for her self-portraits, Kahlo’s work is remembered for its “pain and passion” and its intense, vibrant colours. Her work has beencelebrated in Mexico as emblematic of nationaland indigenous tradition, and by feminists forits uncompromising depiction of the femaleexperience and form.

Kahlo suffered lifelong health problems, many of which stemmed from a traffic accident in her teenage years. These issues are reflected in her works, more than half of which are self-portraits of one sort or another. Kahlosuggested, “I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best.”

Art in Healthcare’sPresident, Matilda Mitchell, says of this work,“Nothing is sliding out of the image, nothingshouts, everything is measured – the quietelegance of Ian’s work, the essence of thisscene he has come to love, the minimalism, the completeness, everything one could ask of his work is here.”

BUILDING BRIDGES

St Crispin’s School

In partnership with Edinburgh World Heritage Trust and StCrispin’s School we celebrated World Heritage Day in April. We took pictures from our collection that show heritage sites in Edinburgh into St Crispin’s School, a special school forpupils with severe and complex learning difficulties. Pupils atthe school responded to these works to create exceptionallyimaginative and inspiring artworks, which were then displayed in the school and in the St James Centre in Edinburgh.

Tynepark Resource Centre

We worked with the people who use Tynepark Resource Centre in Haddington, which deals with issues surroundingmental health. Centre users and staff selected artworks to be hung in their building and then we ran talks about thepaintings. We followed this with a formal evaluation of theeffects of the artwork on everyone using the building.Reactions were very positive. One service user explained how he found the pictures inspired him to create his own art.Another said it “gave (them) a new perspective on the art.”Now, we plan to run an art course for centre users that wouldoffer a bridge into mainstream arts activities.
