Being on the Civic Beautification Committee since its inception has been very fun and rewarding! This year, this generation of Krause celebrates 35 years in business and 28 of those have been as a Chamber member. Why is shopping local important? When you spend $1 in the local economy, you also pay 8.25 cents in sales tax. Of that money, two pennies stay here locally to help keep your property taxes low, fund economic develop-ment and jobs, and it pays for the services you enjoy from the city. The city of Amarillo depends on several sources of reve-nue to operate. The largest amount of income comes from two areas: sales tax and property taxes. Both of these revenue sources need a healthy local economy. That money helps pay for services you depend on, like fire and police protection, parks and recreation, paved roads, and water and sewer service.

CVC Wrap-up Amarillo and the Amarillo CVC had a great year during FY 2010-11. Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) collections are up 8% for the fiscal year. Conventions hosted were even to the previ-ous year in terms of room nights and up in delegate count . The Holiday Inn Medical Center, a full-service hotel, opened this summer and the Courtyard by Marriott Downtown, in the historic Fisk Building, opened New Year’s Eve. The announcement was made this summer about an aggressive downtown redevelopment plan that will include in Phase 1 a new Multi Purpose Event Facility and a new parking garage attached to a new full-service Wyndham Hotel. Both of these projects are expected to be open in 2014. Amarillo also opened a new Austin sales office to better serve the state association market.

Sensible Solution...an Alternative Coverage to Workers’ Comp

The lives covered continues to grow to 1,040 employees in 10 Amarillo businesses that have chosen Amarillo’s Sensible Solution as their coverage for workplace inju-ries. The Amarillo Chamber of Commerce partners with Jackson-Lloyd Insurance Management to provide “Amarillo’s Sensible Solution”, as an insurance choice for workplace related injuries with lower premium payments and controlled claims costs. The plan protects the busi-ness interests of Chamber member businesses by pro-viding real insurance protection with an affordable pre-mium. A select group of local insurance agents are qualified to provide information related to three policies available for Chamber member businesses. Amarillo’s Sensible Solution offers three different policies available to chamber members. Each policy contains dif-ferent pricing levels to fit any budget, thereby enabling not only large employers but small employers the abil-ity to choose their desired level of coverage for on-the-job injuries. Business members can be assured that their employee injury claims will be treated by Amarillo hospitals and doctors with quality care that each em-ployee deserves. Policy highlights and an exclusive panel of local insur-ance agents are available on the chamber website www.amarillo-chamber.org under the HEALTH CARE tab and Workers’ Comp Alternative quicklink. An exclusive panel of local insurance agents will assist the Chamber membership with sales and service.

Health Care Cooperative The Chamber is entering the third year of the health care initia-tive. The primary mission of the coop is still to offer cost-effective health care benefits for Chamber business owners. Par-ticipation in the plan has increased the number of workers with health care coverage to well over 2,500 and renewals were strong through this past year. Providing health care coverage has also improved their well-being and access to care, giving businesses a competitive edge with a healthy work force. Nearly sixty certified agents offer the United Healthcare insur-ance products in Amarillo and the surrounding communities, including Booker, Dalhart, Friona, Pampa, Herford, Lubbock, Perryton, and Tulia. Over eighty companies have renewed policies and another twenty-two have signed up to insure their employees with the United Health Care plans under the Amarillo Chamber Health Care Cooperative. This initiative is still providing powerful health coverage solutions for business owners while emphasizing personal responsibility for health care with a focus on wellness and prevention. This year United Healthcare is adding additional products available through the Chamber Coop including a Wellness module.

Health plans offered through the Amarillo Chamber Healthcare Cooperative are available to all business owners who are mem-bers of the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce. Businesses that enroll with UnitedHealthcare through the Chamber will receive a 7% discount on select medical plans and have an option for sav-ing 5% on their bundled dental and vision plans.

UnitedHealthcare offers a broad network of quality, cost-effective physicians and health care professionals in Amarillo including Baptist St. Anthony’s and Northwest Texas Hospitals and many other facilities in the region.

For more information please call Dianne McClish, 806-342-2002, or check our website at www.Amarillo-Chamber.org under the HealthCare Tab.
