America SCORES 2009: From Strong Roots, Greatness Grows
A n n u a l R e p o r t
Letter from the CEO:
From Strong Roots, Greatness GrowsI am thrilled to have joined the America SCORES team in February of this year. When I first learned about the organization, its potential impact on the lives of urban children immediately caught my interest. From first glance, it was clear to me that America SCORES has all the components of a model youth development program.
The America SCORES curriculum is comprehensive and addresses four major dimensions of children’s growth: physical, intellectual, emotional, and social. By using the students’ teachers as coaches, America SCORES also strengthens the relationships between children, teachers and parents, and helps build supportive systems for the children it serves. These two strategic components make America SCORES unique among after-school programs.
Reading through this report, you will get a real sense of the transformative nature of America SCORES. Mireya’s story, page 5, demonstrates how America SCORES LA helped a shy girl blossom into a true leader. Similarly, America SCORES Bay Area Board Chair Mark Talucci’s story, page 11, shows how a lifetime of philanthropy grew from a childhood in Mexico. Both Mireya and Mark’s stories are fine examples of the kind of passion and commitment inspired by America SCORES throughout the nation.
This is an exciting time in the history of America SCORES. We are building the organization’s infrastructure, raising its brand awareness, and increasing its financial base. Our goals are to build on the legacy of America SCORES to increase its impact and reach and to become a thought leader in the area of youth development. With more than a decade of experience in bringing out the best in urban youth, America SCORES is ready for the challenge.
Thank you for your continued support as we take America SCORES from good to great. You make it possible for us to empower urban youth to be healthy, think creatively, and become agents of change.
With gratitude,
Norma Barquet, Ed.D.Chief Executive OfficerAmerica SCORES

From Strong Roots, Greatness Grows
Letter from Board Chair Fred Popp
Teamwork. Leadership. Commitment. These are the key values that America SCORES teaches to urban youth. They are the same values that guide the America SCORES network of staff and volunteers.
For more than ten years, America SCORES has been a leader in after-school youth development working to fight childhood obesity, increase literacy, and promote community service in partnership with public schools.
As CEO of SME Branding, I have had the privilege of working with top players in professional sports and with organizations including Real Madrid, the New York Yankees, and the US Olympic Team. The qualities that create success in the field of sports and in business are the same qualities we instill in America SCORES poet-athletes: Teamwork, Leadership, and Commitment.
America SCORES’ new CEO, Norma Barquet, aspires to these values as well. A respected leader in the fields of education and youth development, Norma comes to us with more than 25 years of experience helping youth achieve academic and personal success. She is the right person to help us take America SCORES to the next level.
Leadership is ultimately about creating a way for people to contribute to making something extraordinary happen. With Norma at the helm, America SCORES is poised for an extraordinary future, reaching more children, changing more lives, and improving more communities. Thank you for your continued support. You make America SCORES’ innovative and effective programs possible for children from coast to coast.
Best regards,
Fred PoppNational Board ChairAmerica SCORES
Seeds of an Idea: The Start of America SCORESAmerica SCORES began in 1994 as the brainchild of a DC public schoolteacher named Julie Kennedy. Faced with the dilemma of how to keep her students on track and out of trouble after-school, Julie turned to her experience as an athlete and began teaching her girls soccer. In bad weather, she chose to introduce another outlet to her students: poetry. These two basic skills, in combination, began to have a dramatic effect on her class – bringing out their natural confidence, leadership, and creativity, all while encouraging active, healthy living. Julie recognized the power of this model and added a service component that would take her students’ leadership skills even further. Schools around DC took notice, and the program began to spread district-wide. In 1999, Julie and her growing staff piloted an affiliate program in Boston, and America SCORES as we know it today was born. Now serving communities in 15 cities coast-to-coast, America SCORES has touched the lives of more than 39,000 children.

An Idea Grows
A National Network Springs from Local RootsAmerica SCORES would not have the capacity to reach students from Boston to Los
Angeles without the vision of our earliest stakeholders. Their enthusiasm for our kids, belief
in our model, and commitment to their communities took America SCORES from a local
experiment to a national movement on behalf of underserved youth. Organizations such
as The US Soccer Foundation, Starbucks, adidas, Bestfoods Educational Foundation,
and Major League Soccer provided crucial operating, capacity-building, and in-kind
support from our earliest days. These commitments helped build a nationally-recognized
curriculum, train thousands of teachers, and build partnerships in hundreds of school
districts. We salute these early champions for helping us lay down strong roots from which
our future is still growing.
Alumni Feature Eight years ago, Mireya Mateo enrolled in America SCORES LA as a shy, fourth grade
student at Palms Elementary School in Los Angeles. She had not played soccer before
and wasn’t particularly interested in poetry. But Mireya’s interest was sparked early in that
first season as she quickly bonded with teammates and coaches, and became enthusiastic
about playing soccer and writing poetry.
Through America SCORES, shy Mireya began to blossom into a creative, outgoing young
leader. Today, Mireya is a high school junior at Alexander Hamilton High School. She is
captain of her soccer team, holds a 3.6 GPA, has completed four LA marathons, served
as a Yahoo! Junior Journalist, and is one of eight High School students in Los Angeles
nominated for the Youth Hero Award. In addition, she was accepted into the Youth
Leadership Program at the Neighborhood Youth Association and she continues to volunteer
regularly for the elementary school program at America SCORES LA. To date, she has
given over 100 hours of community service back to America SCORES!

Focus on Commitment:
Founding Sponsor, US Soccer FoundationFrom 2000 through 2003, America SCORES received a crucial endorsement: a three-year
matching grant program from the US Soccer Foundation to support the establishment of
affiliate programs in new cities. In addition to providing nearly $1 million in direct support
as we grew – first to New England, then Denver, then Chicago and beyond – this pledge
enabled us to leverage hundreds of thousands of additional dollars of support each
year. It is no exaggeration to say that, without this early commitment from the US Soccer
Foundation, America SCORES as we know it would not exist today.

Standing Tall
America SCORES TodayS T a n D I n G T a l l a S a T R E E
In this world people do bad things.
not me, I’m standing tall as a tree.
People want to steal, and kill.
not me, I’m standing tall as a tree.
People want to lie, and don’t believe in God.
not me, I’m standing tall as a tree.
People want to drop out of school and not get a good education.
not me, I’m standing tall as a tree.
none of those things make us big I see.
So I’m going to stay rooted and grow,
tall as a tree.

Helping Kids Grow HealthierThrough our soccer curriculum, America SCORES poet-athletes get 10 times more moderate-to-vigorous exercise than the average American elementary school student. Based on the results of pre- and post-program running and Body Mass Index tests, America SCORES effectively helps urban youth increase their physical fitness levels and lower their Body Mass Index (BMI) – a key indicator of chronic disease and obesity later in life.
Helping Kids Grow as LearnersThrough our poetry curriculum, America SCORES poet-athletes write more than 20,000 original poems every year. Results of pre- and post-program writing rubric tests indicate that America SCORES programs improve the writing achievement levels of students in the following categories: clarity, creativity/ideas, voice, mechanics/structure, use of adjectives and adverbs, insight, description, and use of other poetic devices. The Child Trends Databank notes that, in addition to increasing success within the classroom, “… writing well is necessary to express ideas, persuade, create, advocate as a citizen, and increasingly, it is a skill that is highly valued by prospective employers.”1
Helping Kids Grow as Leaders America SCORES service learning curriculum provides our poet-athletes the opportunity to engage in more than 50,000 hours of community leadership every year. The US Department of Education National Center for Education Statistics reports that “Service-learning allows young people to explore and develop skills for a range of ways to serve, including acts of kindness and caring, community stewardship, and civic action.”2

Ready to GrowMeet America SCORES CEO Norma BarquetNorma joins the America SCORES team with more than 25 years of experience in the education and nonprofit fields. A native of Cuba, Norma immigrated to the United States at age 14. In addition to her executive experience with Girl Scouts of the USA, Detroit Public Schools, and the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), Norma holds a B.A. in French and Spanish from Marygrove College, a Master’s in Spanish and Latin-American literature from the University of Iowa, and a doctorate in education from Wayne State University. Norma is passionate about improving the lives of children, especially the underserved, through high quality educational and leadership experiences.
What inspired your interest in education? My mother was a teacher and I recall her dedication and love for the profession. In 1999, I returned to Cuba to visit family and met two medical doctors who had my mother as their first grade teacher. They told me how they still remember the difference she made in their lives.
Why do you think america SCoRES works so well?America SCORES is a very successful program because:
• America SCORES is a holistic approach to youth development. It targets the physical, intellectual, and socio-emotional growth of children and youth.
• America SCORES develops supportive communities for urban children. Teachers are hired as poetry and soccer coaches in the after-school programs. The special relationships they develop with students and their families transfers into the classroom as teachers become more involved in their students lives.
• America SCORES fills a critical time gap for urban children. We provide a highly successful after-school program giving urban children a meaningful and enriching alternative after school.
• America SCORES gives children opportunities to express themselves physically and creatively. Soccer provides children with a sense of freedom and achievement in the field. Poetry gives them the opportunity to express what is in their minds and hearts. By giving back to their communities children feel purposeful and their lives take a different meaning.
What are your top priorities for the stability and growth of america SCoRES?At the National Office in New York, and throughout our network of affiliates, we are concentrating on the followingpriority initiatives:
• Building Our Infrastructure• Creating and Enhancing Strategic Partnerships• Developing Financial Resources• Enhancing our Brand Recognition• Facilitating More Frequent National Communications• Growing Our Reach in New Communities
Colin SchmidtExecutive DirectorAmerica SCORES Bay Area
“I’m as excited and motivated as I was nine years ago,” says Colin Schmidt, Executive Director of America SCORES Bay Area. Since founding the affiliate in fall 2001, Schmidt has led its growth from 150 students in five schools in San Francisco to more than 1,000 in 25 schools across San Francisco, Oakland, Richmond, and San Pablo.
While the Bay Area program has grown exponentially, certain things haven’t changed: the affiliate retains two staff members and two board members from its inception nearly 10 years ago, and two staff members and three board members whose tenures span 5-7 years. “It’s basically just respect for the people and the talents they bring, and working with them to make sure their job continues to be interesting and exciting given their aspirations,” says Schmidt. Schmidt cites the relationship between himself, Executive Board Chair Mark Talucci, and the development committee as another key to success: “That triangle of leadership keeps board members engaged and brings in new energy.” Looking ahead, he is excited by the potential of the America SCORES Junior program, which serves kindergarten through second-grade students, and by the White House-led “Let’s Read. Let’s Move.” campaign. “Once we catch those tailwinds, this organization is going to roar.”

Mark TalucciExecutive Board Chair America SCORES Bay Area
Mark Talucci, chair of the Executive Board of America SCORES Bay Area, was three-years old when he first tried to climb the 8-foot stone wall around his family’s house in Mexico City, and five when he first succeeded. “I was surprised to see, on the other side, a family with six or seven little kids living in a mud-and-straw house,” Talucci recalls. He became friendly with the kids and eventually joined the youngest two as they walked, balancing two pails on a stick across their shoulders, the one-or-two miles to a river to retrieve water for the family’s corn crop. “I said, ‘Hey guys, I will take my hose and throw it over the wall,’” says Talucci. “Then, sometimes, I would take loaves of bread and throw those over.”
Talucci, co-founder and CEO of The Sak Brand Group, joined the Executive Board of America SCORES Bay Area in 2002. “I looked into [other organizations] but I didn’t want politics. I just wanted to help,” he says. Talucci, who has chaired the Board for the past five years, cites Executive Director Colin Schmidt as the number-one reason for the affiliate’s success. He also gives a lot of credit to the Executive Board, which has three governing principles: lead by example, set clear expectations, and hold members accountable. “We say, ‘Being a Board member is not a right, it’s a responsibility.’”
“Since my introduction to america Scores, Mark has been a source of constant inspiration. His Board leadership has been about cultivating an environment that brings out the best and inspires others to do what is required for the benefit of all,” says Fred Popp, america Scores national Board Chair.

1994: Julie Kennedy begins teaching soccer and poetry to her students after school. It becomes so successful that she develops a curriculum and DC SCORES is born.
1999-2000: DC SCORES serves 12 schools. An affiliate program opens in Boston and America SCORES becomes a national organization.
2001: Programs open in Denver and Chicago.
2002: New York and Bay Area open programs. A formal Affiliate Agreement is ratified.
2003: LA and Seattle open programs. The first national soccer curriculum is published.
2004: Programs open in Cleveland, Milwaukee, and Dallas. America SCORES develops its first middle-school programs as well as a Replica-tion Manual to guide future affiliate growth.
2005: St Louis opens an affiliate; Bay Area expands from San Francisco to Oakland. DC SCORES opens full middle school programs. The national organization expands teacher-training program.
2006: America SCORES Atlanta opens. National Day of Service is added to the America SCORES service-learning curriculum.
2007: Middle school programs expand to Bos-ton and LA. A national evaluation by Philliber Research proves the program is effective in fight-ing obesity, promoting literacy, and increasing school engagement among urban youth.
2009: Expansion talks for a Portland, OR affiliate begin. Leaders from Portland Public Schools and other Portland area youth services pledge to serve on Advisory Board to bring America SCORES to the region. Grants are secured from adidas and Portland’s new MLS team, the Portland Timbers.
2010: Middle-school programs grow, and a new “SCORES Jr” initiative brings the America SCORES curriculum to K-2 students.

The Playgrounds of LifeBy Anthony Spears, Jr.Age 10
Swings of sadness
Swings of gladness
Today I am a rusted swing
Tomorrow I am a swing that sings
Some days it’s waiting on the bench
Other days it’s playing ball all day
Little kids play in the sand
It’s like they are playing in a band
Big kids can reach the bars
Later they reach for the stars
Teens play on the courts
So they can get better at their sports
Adults sit and talk
When they should probably take a walk
Children need to remind the adults
how to play
So they feel young for another day.
When kids play they scream
And for the adults it’s like a dream
There is no other place like the
playground of life…
Thanks to champions like you, my ten-year old son, Anthony, in the fifth grade at ER Taylor Elementary school, has access to the America SCORES Bay Area program.
Anthony didn’t speak to his teachers or anyone other than my wife, his sib-lings, and, on occasion, his grandmother, until he was in the first grade. We called it selective mutism. Since he’s been involved in the America SCORES Bay Area program, he’s developed into the kid I know he is. He talks to other kids at school, and to all the teachers and principals. He once struggled with doing his homework, and now he’s on the honor roll. He’s developing in all areas because of the interaction he has with his teammates and America SCORES coaches.
Last year, Anthony was selected to read his poem in front of an audience of hundreds at the America SCORES 2009 National Poetry SLAM! at the New York Stock Exchange. Anthony proudly read a poem called “The Playgrounds of Life.” It expressed how kids go to the playground to play, and the adults are just sitting around.
Well, for our family, that’s no longer the case.
On Saturdays, it’s our family’s ritual to go to the America SCORES Saturday game day together, where Anthony is playing, I’m playing, and we’re all inter-acting with each other and the other families. A few years ago, I really didn’t know any of these parents; and now we’re on a first-name basis and we talk all the time. Anthony’s poem is a reminder for us to play together!
- Anthony Spears, parent America SCORES Bay Area
