Thanks for your leadership, and best wishes in your retirement
2009 was a year of transition here at Westminster-Canterbury with some changes planned and others unforeseen. To begin with, the economy changed dramatically at the end of 2008 and affected the way we did most everything in the year that followed. We worked to become more effi cient in our own operations. However, while sharpening our pencils, we also continued investing in our future. Specifi cally, we renovated our dining programs and spaces to maintain our leadership edge as the premier retirement community in Hampton Roads.
The fall Nor’easter, devastating to much of Hampton Roads, was weathered by our residents in safety and comfort here on the Chesapeake Bay. The storm encouraged many people to decide to never weather another storm alone in their house again, nor to face alone the headache of cleaning up after one. We sold eight apartments in the month of December alone. This upward trend in sales has continued beyond the winter. Our rate of sales has doubled in the new fi scal year.
We witnessed further transition last year when Erle Marie Latimer, our President since 1990, retired. Erle Marie was here in 1982 when Westminster-Canterbury fi rst opened and she returned in 1990 to serve as President. Through her leadership, she inspired the growth of the Hoy Center (our health care facility). We created our Foundation, and subsequently increased our Fellowship Program. Fellowship funds help us provide residency to as many qualifi ed individuals as we possible, regardless of their fi nancial ability. Erle Marie also oversaw the successful completion of the West Tower Expansion Project, which added 164 beautiful new apartments and improvements throughout the community. The Trustees selected J. Benjamin Unkle, Jr. as our new President & CEO. Ben spent 13 years with a national senior living company, most recently serving as Senior Vice President for Western Operations, in which he led eight Continuing Care Retirement communities.
Our True LifeCare Program and our Wellness Philosophy remain the hallmark programs that defi ne lifestyle here at Westminster-Canterbury. We never waiver in our mission of providing and promoting the well-being of each of our residents. We offer resort-style living, excellent health care, and fi nancial peace of mind. Doubling our sales results this fi scal year demonstrates that many of the wisest Virginians are concluding, especially in hard times, that living at Westminster-Canterbury is truly “Smarter Today Than Ever” as both a fi nancial and lifestyle decision.
J. Benjamin Unkle, Jr.President and CEO
