The Story of Kripa

In 1981, in the simple environs of a church com

pound in Bandra, K

ripa (a Sanskrit word m

eaning “grace”) w

as born with a priest, a doctor, a recovering alcoholic and three patients in attendance. In

just over two decades, K

ripa has grown into the largest non-governm

ental organization in India help-ing people suffering from

chemical dependency and H

IV infection. Today there are 59 facilities in

11 states in India – Maharashtra, K

arnataka, Goa, G

ujarat, New

Delhi, U

ttar Pradesh, West B

engal, A

ssam, M

anipur, Nagaland and M

eghalaya. There are dem

ands for services from other states like A

ndhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Tam

il N

adu, Arunachal Pradesh and U

ttaranchal. M

other Teresa, one of the guiding spirits of Kripa blessed the C

alcutta and Vasai C

enters and had alw

ays been a source of strength and support to Kripa over the years.

Kripa’s strength has been its unique blend of W

estern techniques e.g., the 12 Step programm

e of the A

lcoholics Anonym

ous, the Minnesota M

odel of Therapeutic Com

munities and Eastern disciplines

like Yoga and m

editation, Vipassana practice, C

hinese T’ai Chi C

huan and Japanese Shiatsu. Kripa

today enjoys one of the highest short and long-term recovery rates in India and the K

ripa model is

being replicated in centers around the world.

Kripa inculcates a change in lifestyle and highlights the need to study risk perception, effectively as-

sist in harm m

inimization and train affected individuals to m

onitor life as an ongoing process of spiritual grow

th. K

ripa’s broad spectrum of services to the com

munity includes Training of Trainers in C

hemical D

e-pendency &

Rehabilitation, and facilitating the w

ork being carried out by law enforcem

ent agencies, educational institutions and other academ

ic institutions involved in human services. A

major area of

work involves supporting organized industry through the Em

ployees Assistance Program

me (EA

P) / O

ccupational Health C

are for employees, under the aegis of the International Labour O

rganisation (ILO

), New

Delhi O

ffice, using a Com

munity B

ased Rehabilitation Program

me m

odel. Currently w

e are also conducting enhanced Peer Led Intervention program

mes for Prevention of H

IV am

ong In-jecting D

rug Users in D

haravi (Maharashtra), K

ohima (N

agaland), Shillong (Meghalaya) and Im

phal (M

anipur) with funding support from

the United N

ations Office on D

rug & C

rime (U

NO

DC

), Re-

gional Office for South A

sia, New

Delhi.

Since 2002, Kripa’s involvem

ent with its inclusive approach to H

IV/A

IDS care has been clarified

through various projects under the Kripa-A

IDS initiative. Initiated through a H

ome B

ased Care ser-

vice with support from

the Catholic R

elief Services in Vasai Taluka in Thane D

istrict, The Vasai R

e-gion A

IDS C

ontrol Society (VR

AC

S) was born to cover a target population of around fifty thousand

people and soon added a Targeted Interventions component w

ith support from the A

VER

T Society (funded by U

SAID

). Through a Netw

orked Initiatives for Com

munity Em

powerm

ent (NIC

E) model,

VR

AC

S provides Surveillance, Managem

ent & C

are, Aw

areness, Research &

Training (SMA

services to the comm

unity. After seven years of field-testing, the response and results are extrem

ely gratifying. It is K

ripa’s intention to see this model reproduced in other areas of the country keeping

in mind the need to allow

variations based on specific sociological and ethnic needs in other comm

u-nities.
