PREFACE
Farm mechanization facilitates faster agricultural growth through efficient utilization
of inputs by ensuring timeliness of agricultural operations, reducing cost of production as well
as reducing drudgery in carrying out various agricultural operations. It is generally believed
that the benefits of modern farm technology have been availed of by only large farmers. The
fact, however, is that even small farmers utilize selected farm equipment for efficient farm
operations and value addition of their farm produce through custom hiring.
The high cost of machinery and shortage of quality machines and manpower should not
deprive farmers of the opportunity to modernize production agriculture. In this direction, this
Institute has been engaged in the training for human resource development and testing of farm
machinery for ensuring quality machinery since 1963. During 2008-09, this Institute has
trained 2048 trainees on various aspects of farm machinery i.e. operation, maintenance/repair,
energy conservation and management of farm machinery and it has tested 77 machines which
includes combine harvester, tillage implements, I.C. engines, components, irrigation pumps,
harvesting and threshing equipments.
I am pleased to release the annual report of the Institute for the financial year 2008-09
which gives brief information about the training and testing activities. I am thankful to the
co-editors of this report and other staff of this institute for their help. I hope, this report shall
be useful to all those who are engaged in farm mechanization
Himat Singh.
HIMAT SINGH Director Northern Region Farm Machinery Training & Testing Institute, Govt. of India (Ministry of Agriculture) Sirsa Road, Hisar-125 001 Haryana
INSTITUTE
The modernization of agriculture through progressive use of modern
agricultural machinery and improved farming techniques, will promote higher
productivity and production better quality agro produce and in turn, higher economic
growth, income and employment besides alleviation of drudgery associated with farm
operations. Tractors, combines harvester, power tillers, irrigation pumps and other farm
machinery are now being extensively used all over the world. Yet, there is a lack of
knowledge and experience in the proper operation and maintenance of farm machinery
and in selection of machinery and implement combinations best suited to various
farming conditions. To derive maximum benefit from the use of farm machinery, trained
manpower is needed in the field of selection, operations and maintenance of farm
machinery and techniques of mechanized cultivation is of utmost importance. To meet this requirement, the Govt. of India established an Agricultural
Machinery Utilization Training Centre at Budni (Madhya Pradesh) in 1955.
Subsequently, the task of testing of tractors and allied farm machinery was also
entrusted to the Centre. On augmented demand from various sectors for trained man
power and need for quality improvements on equipment, Government of India
established three more Farm Machinery Training and Testing Institutes at Hisar
(Haryana) in 1963, Garladinne (Andhra Pradesh) in 1983 and Biswanath Chariali
(Assam) in 1990.
Location The Northern Region Farm Machinery Training & Testing Institute, at Hisar is located
in Haryana State on National Highway No. 10 and is about 170 Km from Delhi by road and 185

TESTING
Govt. of India set up the testing wing of this Institute in the year 1972. It acts
as an important link between manufacturers and users of Agricultural machines as well
as other agencies responsible for the introduction and popularization of farm
equipments. Two types of tests i.e. commercial and confidential are carried out at the
Institute. Commercial tests are aimed to verify the declarations / claims of the
manufacturer / applicant for performance characteristics of machines that are in or
ready for commercial production
Confidential tests carried out are for providing confidential information on
the performance of machines, whether ready for commercial production or not or to
provide any special data that may be required by the manufacturer / applicant.
The testing wing of this Institute is equipped with specialized and modern
scientific equipments / instruments for conducting various tests on a wide range of
agricultural machines. Bureau of Indian Standards also accredits the laboratories of the
Institute for testing of the samples under BIS central certification marks scheme. BIS
accredit following laboratories.
1) Engine tests laboratory for testing of stationary diesel engines as per IS-10001
and petrol / kerosene engines as per IS-7347.
2) Centrifugal pump test laboratory for testing of centrifugal pumps as per IS-6595.
Apart from the accredited laboratories, the testing wing have following
operational laboratories for testing of other Agricultural machines.
1) Plant Protection Equipment test laboratory.
2) Implement test laboratory.
3) Fuel filter test laboratory.
4) Design and drawing section.
5) Instrumentation cell.
6) Computer cell and Reprographic section.
This Institute is also authorized by the Ministry to test Self-propelled Combine
Harvesters. The testing wing is fully commissioned to take up the tests on Self-
