A Night Of Celebration and Song
An evening of fun and music at Hideout Chicago raised more than $15,000 for the Tuesday’s Child programs. 2008 Oscar winners
Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova charmed the crowd with their music
on this special night.
Everybody Dance!
More than 120 Tuesday’s Child friends and family put on
their dancing shoes for the 2007 Parent’s Night Out Gala.
Dinner, dancing, and an
auction were the highlights of this bi-annual event that
raised funds for the Tuesday’s Child programs.
2007 Highlights 9
Speech Therapy
In 2007 Speech Therapy was introduced at
Tuesday’s Child. This program helps children who are experiencing issues with either a
speech or language delay.
Speech Therapist Pam Conway is leading the program, and due to
overwhelming demand a second Speech Therapist will be added early next
year.
Play Ball!
In Summer 2007 Tuesday’s Child clients enjoyed an afternoon at the friendly
confines courtesy of the Chicago Cubs. Thanks to a ticket
donation from the Chicago Cubs Community Affairs Department, 50 children and parents enjoyed
a great game.
History
Tuesday’s Child originated in 1980 at Chicago’s Children’s
Memorial Hospital as a family service developed by mental
health care and early education specialists to help families of
young children who had conflict-ridden relationships with their
parents. Many of these children also had significant emotional/
behavioral difficulties or developmental disorders. In 1984
Tuesday’s Child was established as an independent 501 c(3)
nonprofit organization.
Mission
The mission of Tuesday’s Child is
to “help families establish and
maintain strong, positive
relationships with their children
from the earliest stages and to help
children, especially those at risk for
failure, to enter school ready to
learn.” Vision
♦ That all parents will help their children recognize and achieve
their highest potential.
♦ That every child will approach life with a strong sense of
importance to family and community...
♦ And that our parenting and early childhood programs can
serve as a strong model for national education policy and
social and school programs.
History, Mission & Vision 2
In 2007 Tuesday’s Child celebrated its 27th year of service. This year we added new faces to the staff and Board of Directors, and we are proud to work with all of the dedicated individuals who make up the Tuesday’s Child team. In addition to our regular programming, a new Speech Therapy program was added this year. Due to overwhelming demand for the new program, by early 2008 the program will be expanded to serve even more children with an additional Speech Therapist. Our leadership sees the addition of a Speech Therapy program this year as an initial step towards helping Tuesday’s Child create sustainable program development and growth as we gear up for the next 27 years. At a time when many social service organizations are facing a challenging economy, Tuesday's Child continues to provide quality services to children and parents with sliding scale fees to accommodate families of every income level. While Tuesday's Child is not immune to the effects of the economy, our generous alumni families, Circle of Friends, Corporate supporters, and Foundation grantors help make it possible for this organization to continue its commitments to our clients and our mission. Our donors and friends are pillars of support as our organization works diligently and carefully to weather the changing economic climate. In these tough times we are so grateful for their support. As 2007 comes to an end we want to extend our heartfelt thanks, on behalf of the Board of Directors, staff, and families at Tuesday’s Child, to all of our donors, supporters, and friends. Tuesday’s Child not only builds happy families, it IS a family, and this organization would not be what it is today without all of the individuals who continue to express their passion for our mission and our work in so many ways. Please enjoy looking through this annual report as we celebrate and remember 2007 and everyone who made this a wonderful year for Tuesday’s Child! Sincerely, Bruce Balfe Dr Ramon Nieves Chairperson, Board of Directors Executive Director

The approach of Tuesday’s Child is two-fold. First, children who are either displaying risk factors for behavioral issues, or diagnosed with a developmental delay, receive
intervention in a therapeutic environment. Second, parents receive training individualized feedback on issues pertaining to their children’s development and
behavior. Tuesday’s Child has programs appropriate for children from approximately 12 months (“walking age”) through age 6.
Parenting Program Parents work on individualized behavioral and goal planning activities, with group sessions led by a Clinical Child Psychologist, and individual time with trained peer parent mentors. Both weekday and Saturday programs are available to address the needs of single parents, co-parenting situations, and the problems parents face when each parent is working full time. The Child Center The Child Center compliments the parent education programs by using the same developmentally appropriate, behavior management strategies taught to parents. Emphasis is placed on cooperating with the teacher, interactive games with peers, and play. The four areas of concentration emphasized and observed in the Child Center are:
♦ Socialization (ability to interact appropriately with others) ♦ Time on Task (ability to focus and concentrate) ♦ Participation (ability to cope with a variety of situations) ♦ Compliance (ability to recognize limits and follow directions)
Early Intervention: Birth to Three Specialized onsite intervention of young children with diagnosed developmental delays such as speech, physical and social/emotional issues. Intensive parent training is also provided. Familias Felices An, 8-week Spanish-language parent training program combined with Spanish-language Child Center activities for children. Outreach Program Parent training is offered to community organizations in workshop formats. These programs are offered in multi-week or one-day sessions in Spanish and English. Summer Camp The Camp provides children with the opportunity to experience educational field trips and camp settings while continuing to offer intervention and behavior management. Speech Therapy A program for children who are exhibiting signs of either speech or language delays.
