When a life is saved or an illness healed, patients are forced to remember what’s important. A sudden

diagnosis or emergency instantly rearranges our list of priorities. This is when patients tell us they

are relieved to have Lake Forest Hospital as their community hospital. They are grateful for the

exceptional medical care and personal service we deliver, and they look forward to getting back

to their normal life—and the things they cherish. A few of their stories are featured in this year’s

annual report.

We believe our patients deserve the best clinical care from the finest physicians, with access to

the latest technology delivered in a caring and comfortable environment. Our reputation, built over

108 years, remains our hallmark as we continue to receive the top ranking for best quality, best

doctors and best nurses in the county, year after year.

In 2007, we strengthened our position as a quality provider of choice for residents throughout

Lake County with service growth, a continued focus on quality measures, investment in technology,

and a long-range plan to deliver new services, while maintaining a strong financial foundation.

expanded service In 2007, our hospital provided more health care to the communities we serve

than ever before. Admissions were up, as were total inpatient and outpatient visits. We experienced

22 percent growth at our Grayslake Acute Care Center. As Lake County grew with numerous new

residents in the region last year, so did the need for quality health care. To meet the increased demand,

our Acute Care Center extended its service hours to 24 hours, seven days a week. We performed

9,721 surgeries at Lake Forest Hospital and delivered 2,234 infants to parents who experienced

one of life’s most cherished moments in our Waud Family Center for Maternity Services.

New legislation, Senate Bill 1359, sponsored by Sen. Susan Garrett (D) of Lake Forest, was signed

into law on Labor Day weekend by the governor, offering an effective solution for emergency care

across the state of Illinois. This new law will allow Lake Forest Hospital to add emergency center

services in Grayslake.

Quality While our patients measure quality by their experience and outcomes, the hospital is also

measured by accrediting organizations. Last year, the hospital received accolades from several

accrediting bodies and successfully completed reviews by the Joint Commission, the American

College of Radiology, the American College of Surgeons and the College of American Pathologists.

leadership Dr. Joseph Imperato, who leads our Advanced Center for Radiation Therapy and has

served at Lake Forest Hospital for 22 years, was named President of the Medical Staff. We added

new leadership to our highly regarded Emergency Department with the appointment of Dr. Jacek

(Jack) Franaszek as Medical Director for Emergency Services. Dr. Franszek brings 30 years of

emergency medical experience to our hospital.

technology Our investment in medical technology included the opening of our new, state-of-the-art

cardiac catheterization lab, bringing life-saving technology to patients with cardiac and vascular

illnesses. We are pleased to offer a more comprehensive clinical capability in cardiac care and

stroke prevention at Lake Forest Hospital.

Already a fully digital diagnostic institution for seven years, Lake Forest Hospital invested in additional

breast imaging technology, as well as several other diagnostic imaging tools that allow our physicians

to diagnose patients with the highest quality images using the least amount of radiation.

community service As the only mobile health program in Lake County, the CareCoach celebrated

its ninth year of service by breaking the 3,000 patient visit mark. Huge increases in the demand

for care were evident as we added five more locations in the county to treat the uninsured

and under-served members of our community. Our free screenings by the CareCoach team also

identified patients who required immediate care and continued to remind us of our mission to

serve all those in need of care.

Lake Forest Hospital continued its partnership with HealthReach, and provided more than

$400,000 in charity support to its free clinics, which offer vital services to Lake County residents.

generosity From generation to generation, our community members and patients have remembered

Lake Forest Hospital in their estate gifts. In 2007, a record was set for the number of estate gifts

made to the hospital. These legacy gifts, totaling $1.9 million, are greatly appreciated not only for

the critical financial support they provide, but also as a touching reminder of the strong bond between

Lake Forest Hospital and our community. Most poignant of all was the largest gift that came from

the estate of Malcolm M. Walker. His $750,000 gift designated for charity care will impact many.

Generous donors presented an additional $2.3 million in contributions, to give the hospital an

extraordinary total of $4.2 million in 2007 to support our programs and services. The kindness of all

of our donors keeps our mission alive—and we cherish them all.

Ask people what they cherish most in life, and you’ll receive many different responses. Their answers reflect who they are, what they value, how they like to spend their time and what they want to accomplish.

At Lake Forest Hospital, the things you cherish are important to us. Whether you need a routine exam or are facing a cancer diagnosis, we deliver quality health care with compassion and caring.

Every spring I look forward to planting seeds, nurturing the plants and enjoying the healthy harvest from our backyard organic garden with my family.”

I’ve always been a healthy eater, and my

husband and I have enjoyed teaching our

kids about the importance of respecting and

preserving our environment. Each spring, we

enjoy a family ritual of planting a backyard

garden full of healthy vegetables and fruits.

At the start of this year, however, my focus

turned to preserving my own health.>

6

On January 14th of this year, I listened to a presentation that would change,

and ultimately save, my life. As a volunteer for the Lake Forest Hospital

Women’s Health Advisory Council (WHAC), I attended a monthly meeting at

which Dr. Beth Sylvester-Cook, medical co-director of Lake Forest Hospital’s

Comprehensive Breast Care Center and radiologist, spoke. She described the

Center’s capabilities, and discussed the merits of digital mammography, which

is more effective than regular mammography in the detection of breast cancer.

As I sat in the audience, I realized I was eight months past due for my next

mammogram. Instead of going to my previous imaging provider, where older

technology was used, I opted to schedule a next-day digital mammogram at

Lake Forest. The results from my scan were “suspicious” and led to more

testing. Within eight short days—and many supportive phone calls from Dr.

Sylvester-Cook—I was diagnosed with Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS), a

non-invasive cancer. After this diagnosis, a breast MRI was done before

surgical planning. The MRI showed that the breast cancer was far more

extensive than the mammogram revealed. I needed a mastectomy. I met with

surgeons from larger teaching hospitals but ultimately selected Dr. Sonya

Sharpless at Lake Forest Hospital. She spent the most time with me, took a

personal interest in my situation, had boundless energy and was extremely

skilled and meticulous. I couldn’t have made a better choice.

Looking back, I feel very fortunate that I joined the WHAC and heard

Dr. Sylvester-Cook’s compelling presentation. If I hadn’t, I still might not have

scheduled my mammogram. My only disappointment is that I didn’t select

Lake Forest Hospital for my previous mammograms.

Today, just weeks post-surgery, I’m grateful that my cancer was caught early.

As I get back into the swing of my life, my priorities are enjoying my family

and planning our spring garden.

imaging Lake Forest Hospital is dedicated to bringing state-of-the-

art screening and diagnostic equipment to its patients. In fact, our

comprehensive breast care program is one of the best in the Chicago

area. We combine the latest diagnostic technologies—including digital

mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI and multimodality

imaging guided needle biopsies—with leading-edge surgical, radiation

and chemotherapeautic treatments to ensure the best outcomes for

our patients. In addition to having technology that is equivalent to, if

not better than, major centers around the world, our compassionate

environment really makes a difference in the lives of the people we

serve. In addition to breast imaging services, our facilities provide

comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services, including PET/CT,

MRI, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, x-ray, digital mammography and

radiation therapy.

She couldn’t wait to get back to her weekly riding lessons, especially now that the weather is warm.”

Tori, my 12-year-old daughter, missed the last

week of school in February due to the flu.

The following Monday—when we expected to

resume our normal routines—she woke up

complaining that her stomach hurt. I thought

she might be trying to avoid school, so I gave

her some ibuprofen and sent her off to class.>

Page 12: annual report 2007 Things We Cherish - Lake Forest, ILresume our normal routines—she woke up complaining that her stomach hurt. I thought she might be trying to avoid school, so

10

When I came home from work, she was still complaining on and off. After

dinner, when her complaints continued but her demeanor changed, I realized

she needed to see a doctor. As we drove to the Emergency Department at

Lake Forest Hospital, my medical background kicked in. I’m a nurse and a

stickler about only using the ER for true emergencies. I didn’t think Tori’s

situation was serious because she wasn’t doubled over in pain or crying. So, I

turned the car around and headed instead to the Acute Care Center in

Grayslake, where they deal with non-life-threatening health issues.

The acute care physician initially thought Tori might have an ovarian cyst that

was causing her pain, but upon further reflection, the doctor ordered a CAT

scan to rule out a problem with her appendix. Sure enough, the scan revealed

that Tori’s appendix was extremely swollen and at risk for rupture.

We were quickly transferred to Lake Forest Hospital’s Emergency Department.

Dr. William Watson, the surgeon on call, and Dr. Irina Trosman, the Children’s

Memorial Pediatric Hospitalist who was working that day, determined that Tori’s

situation needed immediate attention and rushed her to the operating room.

After the successful surgery, the doctor told me that we were lucky her

appendix hadn’t ruptured. He explained that appendicitis most often affects

people between the ages of 10 and 30, and it is one of the most common

reasons for emergency abdominal surgery in children. Ironically, while we

were there, six other children were recovering from appendicitis in the hospital,

and the very next week Tori’s best friend developed the same symptoms, and

had her appendix removed as well.

After two days in the hospital, Tori completed her recovery at home. In full,

she missed three weeks of school. The whole family was happy when Tori got

back on Ranger, the thoroughbred she rides, and returned to her normal

activities of riding lessons, dance class and softball practice.

—As told by Tori’s mother, Mary

reputation as Lake County’s clear choice for

pediatric care. These pediatric experts have focused knowledge to

deliver advanced care for children in a convenient and compassionate

environment. Starting with our state-of-the-art Level 2+ Special Care

Nursery for newborns, Lake Forest Hospital’s resources address a broad

range of medical and surgical needs for children of all ages, from

infants to school children to teens.

I’m committed to spreading the word about the benefits of live organ donation now that I’ve experienced it first-hand.”

Beyond raising my children, the greatest thing

I’ve done with my life was donating a kidney

to my friend James last year. James is a

65-year-old diabetic who was in renal failure.

He had been on kidney dialysis for about a

year, spending three to four hours a day,

three days a week, hooked up to the dialysis

machine. I knew he was considering a kidney

transplant, so I got tested to see if I was a

match. Luckily, I was a near-perfect match

for James.>

14

James lives in Wisconsin, so the transplant surgery was done at the University

of Wisconsin Hospital. We were in next-door surgical suites and as soon as my

kidney was positioned in James’ body, it started functioning—creating urine

and returning healthy color to his face.

After a few days in the hospital, I returned home feeling tired and sore. By

Wednesday morning, my situation rapidly declined. I could hardly get out of

bed and felt deathly ill. An ambulance rushed me to the Lake Forest Hospital

Emergency Department. By the time I arrived in the ER, I was in a life and

death situation. My blood pressure was down to 50/40 and I was in shock

from blood loss.

Dr. Bob Andrews, the surgeon, and Dr. Dennis Pessis, a urologist, quickly

determined a course of action as I was prepped for emergency surgery. They

assumed, given my history, that I was suffering kidney-related problems. What

they found surprised them—a torn spleen that was causing extensive internal

bleeding. Dr. Andrews removed the spleen and double-checked all the connections

related to my kidney removal before closing me up for good.

Now that I’m fully healed, I work at Lake Forest Hospital as a patient care

technician. My career change was especially important to me after I received

such compassionate care when I was ill. I’m also an advocate for live kidney

donation for the National Kidney Foundation. People don’t realize that they can

live effectively with one kidney (the remaining kidney grows in size to compensate)

and that live organ transplants have higher success rates than transplants from

non-living donors. In addition, both the donor and recipient get to schedule

surgery at a time convenient for both, and the recipient also has peace of mind

from knowing the donor’s personal health history. My mantra now is that you

can’t change the world all at once, but you can make a profound difference

one person at a time.

Retirement should be about family and good friends and the time to enjoy a little adventure.”

On December 1, 2007, I officially retired

after 40 years working as an electrician and

construction specialist. For the first couple

of months, my wife and I planned to spend

quality time with our granddaughter Abby,

and also a good friend and I were going to

embark on a cross-country trip. It’s been a

joke of ours that we would tour the country

together on a bucket trip before we “kick

the bucket.”>

18

But twelve short days into retirement, I did not feel well. I went to bed with

chest discomfort and tightness. A kind of shock ran down my left arm and

my fingers felt like they weren’t working properly. I mistakenly thought I

might have a cold, so I rubbed some Vicks VapoRub on my chest to see if it

provided relief. It didn’t.

The next morning, I felt the same, so we headed to the hospital. In recent months,

many friends and colleagues had assured me that Lake Forest Hospital was a

superior hospital. The doctors and nurses in the Emergency Department proved

their competence as soon as we arrived.

The moment I described my chest pain, I was whisked into an examination

room. The ER doctor and nurse took excellent care of me. They gave me an

aspirin and a nitroglycerin tablet, then conducted an EKG and a chest x-ray

to pinpoint the source of my symptoms. During the chest x-ray, I developed a

debilitating headache and started sweating profusely. At that point, I was

rushed to the new Cardiac Catheterization Lab. Medical Director Dr. Jonathan

Gilbert and his team inserted a stent in an artery near my heart. Technically,

I had a heart attack in the ER, and within 30 minutes, they saved my life.

I feel so fortunate that Lake Forest Hospital’s Cardiac Cath Lab was there

when I really needed it. If not, after arriving at the Emergency Department, I

likely would have been transferred to another hospital for treatment, and

perhaps suffered my heart attack en route.

Now that I’m recovered, I’m taking steps to ensure my long-term health. I’m

participating in the cardiac rehabilitation program at Lake Forest Hospital,

and I’ve quit smoking as well. My health is a priority now—I want to enjoy my

retirement, see the country and watch my grandchildren grow up.

cardiology At Lake Forest Hospital, we prevent and diagnose

early-stage heart disease to help our patients avoid long-term heart

problems. We provide cardiac outpatient diagnostic testing, including

heart healthy CT scans, electrophysiology, cardiac catheterization,

coronary angioplasty, non-invasive cardiac testing, EKGs, Holter monitors,

echocardiograms, GXT and oximetry. For patients with acute needs,

our new cardiac catheterization lab features a state-of-the-art cardiac

angiography suite that provides quick, on-site diagnoses for patients

suspected of having cardiovascular disease and those who are suffering

heart attack. We are also committed to helping patients regain their

health by providing a full-service cardiac rehabilitation program. It serves

both continuously and intermittently monitored patients, through

monitored exercise (blood pressure and telemetry monitoring), risk factor

identification and risk management techniques.

I relish the elaborate, gourmet cooking competitions that my sister and I undertake each Sunday night.”

My sister and I, who are very close, engage

in an intense desire to outshine each other

in the kitchen. Every Sunday, we take turns

seeing who can whip up the tastiest, most

complicated meal, which are oftentimes days

in the making. And yet, as much as we look

forward to these evenings, we were forced to

cast aside our epicurean ways this past fall

when a health crisis loomed large.>

22

I remember watching the ultrasound screen of my breast and knowing

I was in trouble. As I left the larger hospital where I’d undergone a mammogram

and ultrasound, I called Jennifer Tepper, a nurse navigator at Lake Forest

Hospital. I explained my situation and she went to work. She handled

everything—steering me through a next-day biopsy and then consultations,

surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Even more important than her

guidance, however, was that she served as a supportive friend and confidante

when I really needed one.

I work at the hospital as Director of Patient Financial Services, and have been

highly impressed by the professionalism and caring nature of the health care

staff since I joined the organization. Everyone went above and beyond the call

for me. The Patient Financial Services team of 30+ associates surprised me

by wearing pink shirts emblazoned with the words “Shawn’s Supporters”

every time I had chemotherapy. And the doctors and nurses in the outpatient

oncology and radiation departments made me feel like I was visiting friends,

rather than coming in for a medical treatment. These non-extraordinary, and

yet very powerful, events made all the difference in the world to me. They gave

me hope and fortitude.

I never second-guessed my decision to undergo cancer treatment locally. With

my stage of cancer, the drug protocols are standard across hospitals. I know

other cancer patients who were treated at bigger hospitals, and by far, my

experience at Lake Forest Hospital was vastly superior. I’m happy to report that

a few short weeks after my chemo regimen ended, my sister and I reinstated

our Sunday night dinners. While we enjoy the cooking, it’s really our family

spending Sunday evening together that we enjoy most.

cancer care At Lake Forest Hospital, a diagnosis of cancer is

met with a wide range of state-of-the-art treatment options and a

compassionate and personal treatment team. Board-certified medical

oncologists, surgeons and radiation oncologists, as well as nurses

specifically trained and certified in cancer care, rehabilitation therapists

and nutritionists coordinate your care. They reach beyond their specialties

and work together as a total support team that includes the patient and

their family as partners in the decision-making and treatment process.

By coordinating an integrated approach, we ensure that the patient’s

physical, emotional and spiritual needs are met—and that every effort

is made to eradicate the cancer and manage or slow the disease’s

progression. We believe that our personal approach to cancer care results

in patients who feel more supported, more acknowledged, more hopeful

and, most important, more prepared to return to their active lives when

treatment is completed.

When the weather warms up, I enjoy heading to the golf course. For me, it’s a great way to relax, get some exercise and enjoy the outdoors.”

Last summer was not typical. I was in a car

accident and suffered injuries that caused me

to miss months of work and an entire season

of golf, which is one of my favorite pastimes.

The bulk of my summer was spent in physical

rehabilitation so that I could return to my job as

a truck driver. When fall came, I was relieved to

complete my rehab program, return to work and

seemingly put my health problems behind me.>

In February, I noticed the Lake Forest Hospital CareCoach at the Open Arms

Mission in Antioch. On a whim, I decided to get my blood pressure and blood

sugar checked. To my surprise, Terri Klowden, the CareCoach nurse, said my

blood sugar reading was very elevated at 365. She suggested I go directly to

the Emergency Department for treatment because I could be at risk for serious

complications from untreated diabetes. On my day off, I took her advice and

visited the Acute Care Center in Grayslake. I don’t have health insurance, so

I showed them my CareCoach reading and they took care of me—by giving me

an IV to make sure I was hydrated and rerunning the blood test. It confirmed

my blood sugar was still too high, and the physician recommended I make an

appointment to see Dr. Shuba Lodd, a family practice physician who works at

the Grayslake location.

Two days later, I saw Dr. Lodd and she confirmed that I had Type 2 Diabetes.

I was put on two prescriptions that are designed to lower my glucose levels

and advised to cut sweets out of my diet and start a regular exercise program.

She explained the importance of losing weight by saying my diabetes could

worsen and eventually I could end up needing insulin injections as well if I didn’t

get my weight under control.

My diagnosis has led me to make some positive changes in my life. I’ve lost 21

pounds so far and my blood sugar levels have responded well to the medication

and the lifestyle changes I’ve made. I work out at the gym four times a week, and

now that spring is here, I cannot wait to make up for lost time on the golf course.

CareCoach Lake Forest Hospital’s mobile health unit hits the road

in Lake County to serve medically under-served populations, including

children and older adults, who are uninsured or under-insured. In

operation since 1999 and underwritten in part by Abbott Laboratories,

the CareCoach visits 26 regularly scheduled community locations each

month, as well as two dozen health fair and special events each year.

Its services include screenings, counseling with a registered nurse,

immunizations, school physicals and referrals to physicians if needed.

The CareCoach staff also educates patients on making positive changes

and adopting healthier lifestyles. While most patients’ needs are not

urgent, the CareCoach does identify patients with life-threatening health

complications, such as high blood sugar and blood pressure readings,

which can signify diabetes or cardiovascular disease, and refers them

to Emergency Departments or physicians who can help them better

manage their health.

community

Lake Forest Hospital is committed to caring for its community and extending health care services

to under-served populations. Our community health and education initiatives include the provision

of free care in the community for those in need, educational opportunities led by medical and

health specialists in a classroom-style learning environment, and screening programs, such as the

popular Dare to C.A.R.E. cardiovascular program. We also host two health and safety fairs each

year—one for children, the other for seniors. Last year, 477 people attended the fairs and 768

seniors attended our seniors’ lunch program, which is held monthly in two convenient locations.

CareCoach, Lake Forest Hospital’s mobile health unit, treated more than 3,400 patients last year,

an increase of more than 11 percent over the prior year. Staffed by a registered nurse and a

program coordinator, the CareCoach provided free routine medical care to patients who are

uninsured or under-insured at 23 sites, including screenings, health counseling, immunizations,

school physicals and physician referrals. We also offered immunizations on a convenient, walk-in

basis monthly at Lake Forest Hospital’s Health Education Center.

In 2007, 1,700 community members attended our community education classes, programs and

support groups. Led by experts, our classes cover health education, family life, clinical diagnostics

and treatments, healthy aging, wellness and prevention, women’s health, health screenings, CPR

Lake Forest Hospital launched a free cardiovascular screening program called Dare to C.A.R.E.

(Carotid Artery, Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm, Renal Artery and Extremity Artery) that enabled

240 local residents to be screened for vascular problems and identified several who required

urgent care. Our ability to better educate our patients about their health risks is paramount to

our mission.

volunteerism

Volunteer Services, which manages the efforts of hundreds of volunteers at Lake Forest Hospital,

is vital to the hospital’s ability to provide quality health care in a caring environment. Last year,

356 volunteers contributed a remarkable 31,388 hours of service, an increase of 23 percent over

the prior year, and offered a welcoming and compassionate presence at Lake Forest Hospital. Our

volunteers bring a wide range of diverse backgrounds, interests and talents to our hospital as they work

to give back and enrich the lives of others. We benefit from student and adult volunteers who greet

and escort patients and their family visitors, assist at nurse’s stations, help with special events

and provide reception and clerical support throughout clinical and non-clinical departments.

Women’s auxiliary Board The Women’s Auxiliary Board of Lake Forest Hospital supports the

hospital through fundraising, volunteerism, education and advocacy. Its activities seek to enhance

the facilities and services of the hospital, helping to ensure that the highest quality of health care

is available. The Women’s Auxiliary Board dates back to 1942, and is comprised of 107 talented

and committed women who raised more than $350,000 in 2007 to benefit the hospital. These

women also volunteer in nearly all hospital departments and contributed a combined 8,885 hours

of service—beyond committee hours—to Lake Forest Hospital last year. This influential group also

runs The Resale Shop in Lake Forest, and awarded $30,000 in scholarships to students and

professionals who are pursuing or furthering their education in health care.

Women’s health advisory council The Women’s Health Advisory Council promotes the importance

of women’s health issues through education, events and activities in the community. The Council’s

40 volunteers organize courses, such as the G.R.O.W. (Girls Reaching Out to Wellness) program,

that educates teenage girls on topics like self-defense, lifestyle choices and the importance of

regular exercise and nutritious eating. They host a House Calls event, where medical experts speak

about health issues in a small, personal setting. And they organize a speaker series, Choose

Health—Choose Happiness, that features experts who give timely health-based talks to women in

the community. Last year, 400 participants attended these informative events.

30

philanthropy

As a nonprofit hospital, we rely on philanthropic support to bolster our ability to provide top-quality

health services. Every gift, no matter the size, helps improve our hospital, the care we provide and

the compassion we deliver to each and every individual who enters our doors.

In 2007, the hospital received $4.2 million in gifts, more than $1.5 million dollars over our goal.

Estate gifts, which reached a record-breaking $1.9 million, were a major source of our funding.

The largest gift came from the estate of Malcolm M. Walker and totaled $750,000. Virginie

Isham, a long-time Women’s Auxiliary Board member and past president of the board, left an

estate gift of $193,000. These two gifts helped to double the hospital’s charity care funding to

$7.6 million last year. Lucille Heine, who spent countless hours volunteering for the Volunteer and

Philanthropy Departments, left a $50,000 estate gift earmarked to support radiation oncology.

And the estate of Peter J. Kearney, M.D., a retired obstetrician-gynecologist who delivered hundreds

of infants at Lake Forest Hospital over the years, gave $50,000 to support nursing education.

The annual fund, which serves as the backbone of our philanthropic program at Lake Forest Hospital,

generated more than $853,000 last year, an increase of nine percent from the prior year. This fund

provides unrestricted gifts for ongoing operations that help support our programs in all areas.

A Christina Schulte Fisher endowment was created in 2007 to fund employee scholarships for

careers in health care. Initial funding reached more than $78,000. Chris, a past president and current

honorary member of the Women’s Auxiliary Board and a former Board of Directors member,

spearheaded fundraising efforts for the Hunter Family Center for Women’s Health by serving as a

campaign chair.

We recognize donors in a variety of ways. By making a planned gift to Lake Forest Hospital, donors

automatically become members of the A. Watson Armour III Legacy Society, named for an original

benefactor of Lake Forest Hospital. And The Pillar Society is a philanthropic league that promotes

both restricted and unrestricted gifts to Lake Forest Hospital. Membership in The Pillar Society is

based on cumulative annual support to the hospital with eligibility beginning at $2,000.
