DONOR HIGHLIGHT: SUE S IMONSEN

Born the youngest of the four Cochran girls of Port Arthur, Sue was educated in Port Arthurschools and later the University of Toronto which led her into a teaching career. Sue latermarried Leif Simonsen, a medical graduate of Queen's University. They moved to Port Arthur in1954, where Leif established a medical practice and together they created a family home whichincluded their children, Mary and John. Sue became interested in the Social Planning Council, becoming its chair in the 1960's. This position resulted in her being part of the inaugural boardof the newly formed Thunder Bay Foundation (now known as the Thunder Bay CommunityFoundation) in 1971.

Sue's main interest has always been in education. She served as aTrustee on the Lakehead Board of Education for eight years, taughtfor twelve years at both the high school level as well as the collegelevel. Her interest in education led her to complete her Masters inEducation at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro. Sue hasthe abiding belief that real change in society can occur with aneducated background, which ultimately transforms the influenceswithin our society. As a result, Sue Simonsen is a passionatesupporter of the scholarship and bursary aspect of the Foundation'sprograms.

As a founding member of the TBCF, board Sue has continued to be an active alumni. She hasserved on the Scholarship and Bursary Committee and has assisted wherever needed. In 2015,Sue created the Susan Cochran Simonsen Aboriginal Bursary. She collaborated with a number ofFirst Nation experts including educators to build this heartfelt fund to ensure Aboriginal youth havean opportunity to fulfill their educational dreams. In 2018, this bursary dispersed a total of$1,372.87 to a very deserving student pursuing their academic dreams!

EXCITING YEAR FOR THE VEENA LAMBA SCHOLARSHIP FOR THE ARTS FUND2018 was a memorable year for the Veena Lamba Scholarship for the Arts Fund as the first disbursement was

made to a very deserving student, Brooklyn Ranta!

Mr. Pritam Lamba created the the scholarship fund in loving memory of his wife, Veena, as a remembrance of herlove of art, life and her joy in her family. Veena had an undoubtable passion for nature, which was the inspiration

for many of her pieces of art, including pastures, village settings and portraits, to name a few. In perpetuity,Veena's name and legacy will live on in this scholarship in Thunder Bay, assisting students in finding their

passion in the arts as Veena did.

IN 2018, 29 CHARITIES RECEIVED

$862,966TBCF CELEBRATES LARGEST SINGLE

GRANT IN FOUNDATION'S HISTORY2018 was an exciting granting season for the Foundation. The

Thunder Bay Community Foundation General Grant was thrilled toprovide the Urban Abbey with the largest single grant in the

Foundation's history in the sum of $47,000 towards the costsassociated with their Youth Shelter, the Urban Youth Rescue.

The youth rescue is the first of its kind in the city of Thunder Bay thatfocuses entirely on the needs of youth, ages 16-24, in our community

that are facing homelessness.

The Urban Youth Rescue is expected to have the capacity to houseup to 16 youth, including 8 males and 8 females witha separate space available for transgendered youth.

"It was a project that we felt could make a significant difference in

Thunder Bay. We know that poverty overall and youth poverty is anissue in Thunder Bay. There is no dedicated youth shelter in Thunder

Bay and we knew from the grant application that this amount ofmoney leveraged all kinds of dollars", said Jackie Dojack, Thunder

Bay Community Foundation President. "The funding leveraged themgetting a building donated for the shelter and it also enabled them tocontinue with the renovations necessary to the building so they'll be

able to open the shelter as quickly as possible".

A Word From Mawer

After years of generally rising equitymarkets, 2018 saw broad equity

declines with pronounced volatility inthe final quarter where markets swungup and down by multiple percentage

points on many days. The maincatalysts of the weakness appeared tostem from worries about rising interest

rates, trade actions, slowing globaleconomic growth, and the flattening of

the U.S. treasury yield curve.

TBCF’s benchmark declined by 3.0%over the past 12 months given thebroad equity market declines. TheMawer Balanced Pooled Fund, of

which the TBCF is invested in, gained0.5% before management fees (flat

after fees), outpacing the benchmarkby 3.5%. TBCF’s portfolio performed

as we want it to during a period ofbroad negative market activity.

Notably, the portfolio’s overweightposition in US equities and

underweight position in Canadianequities helped in maintaining themarket value of the portfolio in theface of downside volatility. And the

holdings in Cash and Bonds did whatthey are supposed to do: act as a

shock absorber (or fire extinguisher insome cases) to what can be ugly

performance from equities at times.

TBCF’s portfolio is designed for thelong-term nature of the foundation’s

capital, seeking to prudentlycompound wealth while aiming toprotect against the impairment of

capital. We believe that diversificationby company, sector, geography,

currency and asset class is a logicaldefense in the face of uncertainty andis our main approach to balancing the

growth of capital while protecting itduring stormy weather.
