  • SECRETARY MESSAGE

This unique institution started in 1986 with just 5 students and one classroom. The flagship Akal Academy Baru Sahib today has students, all boarders, on its 1248rolls. Till 1990 there were no transportation services to Baru Sahib and today we have about 20 buses of the State Transport Corporation in service and Baru Sahib has also been selected by Himachal Tourism for promotion as a tourist spot due to heavy footfalls.

We have children from 24 countries and 22 Indian states covering all parts of the world and all ethnicities. This wide representation provides great exposure to our children, who learn to welcome diversity, to be tolerant and kind, to imbibe the best values of various cultures and to have love and respect for people of all communities and all races.

The Trust has now established 129 academies in North Indian states of Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab and I am glad to inform all that with 20 new rural schools to be commissioned next year, the total numbers of Rural Schools in North India managed by the Trust shall reach the figure of 141 academies.

  • ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

The Kalgidhar Trust are not for profit charitable organizations working for the cause of Rural Transformation' by promoting quality low cost Education, Healthcare, Women Empowerment, Social Welfare, Rural Economic Uplift and Disaster Response & Rehabilitation to the deprived sections, in far- flung rural areas of North India. They have been instrumental in bringing about silent but sure reforms to uplift the socio-economic status of the rural poor. The rural areas of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, backward hilly areas of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab are being covered with 129 outstanding Schools affiliated with CBSE. These Schools are catering to 62,000 students.

The rural areas of northern India lack modern scientifIc education and employment opportunities because of the widespread illiteracy and lack of quality education, since it is only available in the urban areas. The girl child in these areas is even worse off, due to son-centric societal attitudes; girls aged from 8-25 years are generally forced to remain at their houses for sharing hands at domestic works and are discouraged to go for education. Most of the districts in North Indian states are 'gender critical'. The gender ratio has dipped to as low as 750 girls for every 1000 boys in many areas because of the

poor social status of women and high level of female feticide.

The poor educational prospects, especially for women, makes the rural people more susceptible to poverty, drug & alcohol abuse, which in turn leads to more violence against women and marital discord. The states of Rajasthan and Punjab in North India, for example, border Pakistan & Afghanistan, which is the largest producer of Opium. This has lead to Punjab being the number one transit point for opium in the world (World Drug Report by UNODC, 2007). The trafficking of drugs has impacted the local population with one in every three males and two out of three school going students now taking drugs (source: The Tribune, June 2009 report).

Good value-based education and good job prospects is a defense against drug & alcohol abuse. While The Kalgidhar Trust operates drug/alcohol de-addiction centers, it hopes that in future such centers would be unnecessary. But in the present scenario, such centers would continue to bring back the addicts to the mainstream of the trust. It is a call for action since education will prevent the future generations from becoming drug addicts.

  • RURAL EDUCATION

Rural Schools, established and managed by The Kalgidhar Trust , are low-cost co-educational English medium schools, affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education, which is the largest educational board in India and is duly recognized by the Department of Education, Government of India.

The Rural School at Baru Sahib, Dist. Sirmaur, HP (amongst India's most backward 100 districts) is the flagship residential school for its 129 day-boarding branches. In coming years more number of schools is expected to start.

The Kalgidhar Trust has developed a value-based education system combined with modern scientific English language based curriculum. The schools are set up in remote inaccessible areas, which are generally missed out by government and private education system, who find them unviable.

By motivating local donors to donate their lands and encouraging local volunteers to actively help in setting up the schools, the organization manages to create a sense of ownership and accountability within the community.

After completion of the school programs, the students are well equipped for higher education and employment. The organization lays emphasis on educating the girl-child and believes that by educating a girl child, not only the entire family but 7 other families get educated.

The organization provides quality education and serves all people, regardless of religion, race, ethnicity or gender, in the remote rural deprived areas of Northern India and believes that imparting value-based education not only meets the demands of the present time but also trains students to use their skills for the welfare of humanity.

The organization aims to make good quality schools accessible and available to all in remote rural areas. The target is to open 500 value based modern scientific schools.

This educational system would produce productive citizens, which in turn would be a bulwark against social evils. It will lead towards sustainable employment for both men and women, which will bring prosperity and social harmony to the nation.

  • E-SMART CLASSROOMS

The organization feels that it is the high time to bridge the tech education gap between the urban and rural youth.

The rural youth, despite being talented, is deprived of the learning opportunities driven by the technology. This divide would make the rural student incompetent, thus impacting the economy of the country.

If India is looking to become one of the top three economies globally, can we actually achieve that goal without empowering the 600 million people who live in rural India. Rural India lives in a different time warp and will continue to do so. Unless we fix rural India, we can't be a rocking or robust economy.

It is an innovative product which is easy to use and proven to enhance learning for students. Ease of use ensures teachers can quickly start using SMART products and experiencing the benefits they bring to teaching and learning.

E-SMART Classrooms are revolutionizing the world of education. Teachers and students are applauding E- SMART Classrooms and the utilization of visual learning. The blackboard, chalk and eraser may become obsolete with this new technology that is so

advanced that it retrieves information, notes and lessons with a simple click. This would enable children to peek into the world sitting in their classrooms. It has been observed that science experiments done in the E-SMART Classrooms have better student results than before the E-board was introduced into the classroom.

Viewing presentations and videos makes understanding subject matter easier. Inquiry based learning, which displays a situation on the board, creates numerous questions and answers that enhance learning.

Students like it because it's attractive; it satisfies their curiosity and is novel. It's visually appealing and that's a completely different way to learn, it's a good educational tool. Teachers are able to access the internet and show the material to the class without the use of an individual laptop for each student. E-SMART Classrooms enhance the understanding of material and have opened up a very interesting gallery that we could not have before.

This technology has truly enhanced teaching and learning. Having the material presented visually and more creatively, as well as being able to write material on the board, copy it and erase it, is a tremendous asset for student learning.

  • policing their own behaviors, appearances and roles. This is especially prevalent in disadvantaged communities where girls and women are often expected to be at home undertaking domestic works.

There is a general lack of respect for the rights of girls and women amongst Indian men which at its worst manifests itself in high levels of domestic and sexual violence against women including murder and rape.

Unequal power between men and women is a root cause of a number of issues that impact on girls and young women including a lack of access to education, a higher burden of poverty, and high levels of teenage pregnancy and the incidence of HIV/AIDS.

The Kalgidhar Trust envisions a trust where women have equality and are valued and desire to build a trust free of gender inequality; as a result, the percentage of female feticide will also decline in the future years.

The poor educational prospects, especially for women, makes people more susceptible to poverty, drug and alcohol abuse, which in turn leads to more violence against women, the organization' strategy focuses on setting up new schools, mainly in the rural areas.

In the past the organization has successfully demonstrated that nearby access to value-based quality education attracts locals in very high numbers to send their children especially girls to these schools. English education is seen as the means to upward mobility of the local population.

Besides providing direct employment, generating economic prosperity for the downtrodden, restoring their self esteem this program also fills up the serious shortage of quality Teachers in rural North India.

free of cost in these camps. Some of these operations would cost more than Rs. 125,000/- if they were performed in any private hospital in a city.

The first free Eye Camp was held at Baru Sahib on 5 June 1984 in which 51 eye operations were performed successfully. A Free Medical Camp was organized at the Charitable Hospital Baru Sahib. Patients and their caretakers used all modes of transportation available at their disposal besides of The Kalgidhar Trust's to reach the Camp.

A team of 100 medical and para-medical professionalscomprising ENT specialists, Surgeons, Physicians, Dental Specialists, Child Specialists, Psychiatrists, Gynaecologist, ortho (Bones and Joints) specialists put forth their laudable expertise and valuable time for this noble cause to help the poor and underprivileged people of this remote area of the Himalayan region, where there is hardly any service available in the name of medical aid.

The faces of the patients reveal and Doctors say it is TRUE – The magic is YOU, your LOVE & SUPPORT!

Doctors strongly believe that besides medical treatment, it is the support of volunteers & generous donors, in terms of both services rendered & the finance for this noble cause of charity.

“It's a force so great, so noble… It can strike a magical thunder of healing upon the patient's heart even before & more effectively after the surgeries, especially in critical cases”, told a psychology expert, who was also present during the medical camp to observe a case.

He also explained that donating for someone's health & treatment is the simplest yet most effective of all gestures because it is this great gesture of “Love & Compassion towards humanity” that actually acts as a natural magical force that helps and supports the psychology of the patient the most, with a sense of care & support that sets his psychology carefree. This in turn, plays the most important part in the healing process that may begin or get triggered well before the actual medical treatment has started.

Amongst volunteers from Jalandhar, the team of doctors present on the panel for the camp included Dr. G.P. Singh, Dr. Gautam S. Sikand, Dr. Col. Rajinder Singh and Dr. Surjit Singh, who performed medical check-up & identified cases for Free Surgeries/Operations & also distributed free medicines; and several other specialized surgeons who later performed operations over the 2 days during the camp.

Dr. Davinder Singh, Principal of Akal Academies (run by Kalgidhar Trust), from Baru Sahib, reveals, “We are located in a very remote part of Uttar Pradesh, where medical services are practically non-existent, our hospital, Akal Charitable hospital, is mainly providing the medical services; around 4 times a year we organize Free Medical Camps, we advertise well all over the place & people from as far as 300 kms travel

here, undergo surgeries & get their smiles back.”

The patients are counseled by Doctors with a lot of love, personal touch & care. They are encouraged to openly share their pains & sufferings to the doctors, added a local volunteer who serves alongside the paramedic team & actively helps spread the awareness about the camp before & during the drive. Those who believe that serving Mankind is serving God, may come forward to support this noble mission of the Kalgidhar Trust.
