In 2019, The Women’s Center celebrated its 40th anniversary.

For almost half a century, we have helped people in our

community overcome the devastating impact of violence,

crisis and poverty. As we look back, so much has changed.

Yet, so much remains the same.

We love to read the first Women’s Center annual report

given by founder and executive director Karen Perkins to

the board of directors at the completion of 1979—a year we

ended with $1700 in the bank, having served 1500 women,

and owning an inventory consisting of four typewriters, one

calculator (remember those?), three desks, four folding

tables, 20 chairs and a projector with five 16 mm films.

Today, The Women’s Center’s mission remains the same,

and we are committed to the same work in which we

started. But, we have come so far and learned so much! In

2019, we served 155,000 women, men and children—8,000

in our counseling, crisis, and employment services; and

147,000 in our violence prevention work. Instead of $1700

dollars in the bank, we operate with a budget of almost

$5 million. And instead of having a staff of three plus 10

volunteers, we now have 80 staff and 500 volunteers who

provide services to and on behalf of our community’s most

vulnerable people.

We have become recognized experts in our fields of work—

work that:

helps children and adults heal from the trauma of sexual

assault and child sexual abuse;

 teaches children how to reduce their risk of abuse;

helps individuals and families resolve serious problems,

develop skills and find resources to move out of crisis;

and,

helps women and men find jobs that break the cycle of

poverty.

What has not changed is our opportunity and privilege to

work with and alongside people coming from situations

most of us cannot imagine, as they muster the courage and

strength to change their lives. In doing so, we are constantly

reminded of our most important lesson of the last 40 years...

the resilience of the human spirit is a miracle, and people

can overcome anything with hope and help.

If you are receiving this annual report, it is probable that

you have been a volunteer, board member, supporter or

program partner at some point along our way. As such,

you are an integral part of The Women’s Center’s history of

changing the world—one person and one family at a time.

Forty years later, we hope you are as proud of the work

outlined in this annual report as we are.

Greetings from the

BOARD CHAIR & PRESIDENT

With Gratitude,

Laura Hilgart Janeen Lamkin

President/CEO Board Chair

RAPE CRISIS & VICTIM SERVICES

“It is so incredible to see the difference from when a sexual assault patient enters the rape exam room and when they leave after the process is over. A patient may come in with her or his head hung low, eyes to the ground in shame or despair. With the support from the Victim Advocate and SANE, a survivor often leaves with their head held high with hope.” ~ Connie, JPS Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner

FROM PAIN TO POSSIBILITIESShelby was a childhood sexual abuse survivor. When she started counseling at the age of 5, like many children who’ve experienced trauma, she was fearful of unfamiliar environments. At her first visit to The Women’s Center, she hid under a table in the lobby, refusing to leave her parents’ side. Her therapist spent that first appointment just visiting with her and her parents in the lobby, helping Shelby feel comfortable and safe. As sessions progressed, she began to make eye contact with her therapist and eventually left her safe “hiding” space under the table for the children’s play therapy room.

Over the course of 2 years, Shelby found healing through art therapy. Her confidence grew, and she eventually found the courage to testify against her perpetrator. Her testimony was instrumental in a conviction and subsequent incarceration.

Two years after she began, Shelby completed therapy hopeful and transformed.

4,339CHILDREN & ADULTS SERVED

2,455 people called the Rape Crisis and Victim Services 24-Hour Hotline.

VIOLENCE PREVENTION & EDUCATION

FROM SILENCE TO SAFETY

“The training I received at The Center has greatly expanded my knowledge. Now, I’m better able to help support victims of sexual assault with compassion and care.” ~ Cole, law enforcement officer

“Play it Safe!® was truly an eye opening experience for my students! They were completely engaged and ‘dialed into’ every word the trainer was saying. I’m thankful for messages that give our students the knowledge to help them make wise choices, especially in regards to dating, and be an advocate for others. These topics are so very important for young adults!”

~Laneece, Crowley ISD teacher

“I told, and I got help. I’m so glad they come do Play

it Safe!®. This is good, really important information

and people need it, and they need to hear it.”

~ Kaia, 5th grade childhood sexual abuse survivor

“Play it Safe!® is fabulous! Our students felt empowered, and the program gave them a voice to communicate with appropriate knowledge and vocabulary.”

~ Malise, FWISD teacher

147,469CHILDREN & ADULTS SERVED

138,947 children and adolescents participated in the Play it Safe!® child abuse and sexual assault prevention program.

286 disclosed their current or past abuse to a Women’s Center trainer. This does not include children who may have disclosed to another trusted adult. 5,613 adults received sexual assault prevention training.

2,909 professionals were trained in issues regarding sexual assault and child abuse.

GENERAL COUNSELING

FROM CRISIS TO CONFIDENCEChloe grew up witnessing family violence, abuse, adultery and, eventually, the abandonment of her father. Because of the trauma, her mother became unable to care for her siblings. Eventually, Chloe—a single mother herself—became the caretaker for her mother, her younger siblings and her child.

The trauma she experienced and pressure to provide for her family—both emotionally and physically—took a toll on her. When Chloe came to The Women’s Center, she was suffering from depression and struggling with suicidal thoughts.

Through individual therapy, Chloe learned coping skills to help combat her depression. She also began attending the Women’s Support Group, where she met a network of peers and received emotional support as she coped with her crises.

Today, Chloe has a career she loves, a valuable support system, a stable home environment and feels hopeful about her future.

3,141CHILDREN & ADULTS SERVED

2,401 people called the Helpline for crisis counseling and problem solving assistance.

201 people received therapy to address crisis and improve emotional well-being.

341 homeless children and their 161 parents living in shelters received support to meet emotional and physical needs as they transitioned out of homelessness.

107 people received assistance through the Legal Clinic.

98 older adults received in-home support through the PEARLS Program to reduce isolation and depression.

“At my age, I thought it was too late for me to change, that there was no more for me. I was so discouraged with my life until I came here. I’ve experienced so much tragedy, and I felt so hopeless. Therapy has been wonderful. My friends have seen a huge change in me!”

FROM STRUGGLE TO SUCCESS

EMPLOYMENT SOLUTIONS

Ashley came to The Women’s Center emotionally depleted after a 2-year job search. She had applied for over 1,500 jobs and was struggling with motivation and focus. After a few weeks, her Career Coach found that anxiety and depression were contributing factors in her failure to be successful in her job search. He referred her to the General Counseling program.

Ashley received counseling to help her overcome her depression and anxiety and to boost her confidence. She worked with Women’s Center Employment Advisors to refine her resume and improve her interviewing skills. Ten weeks after starting the Jobs NOW! Program, Ashley received an offer for the position she wanted at her desired organization making the salary she needed to provide for her family.

The comprehensive services she received at The Women’s Center were the key to her success.

“I applied for so many jobs and couldn’t even get an interview. I remember crying the first time my Career Coach asked me what I wanted to do, because I was just so lost, hopeless and down on my self-worth. The Center helped boost my self-esteem and focus on future goals. With your help, I found a job that provided income for my family that we could not have lived without.” ~ Lilah, Employment Solutions client

Victory Over Violence Walk/Run = 22

Texas Weather = 1

For the first time in its history, the Victory Over

Violence Walk/Run was cancelled due to

inclement weather. However, through the

generosity of the community, we still raised

money to support our anti-violence programs.

We eagerly anticipate the 24th Annual Victory

Over Violence Walk/Run, which will take

place on Saturday, April 18, 2020.

Created in honor of Women’s Center founder Karen Perkins, the Legacy Society recognizes individuals who have included The Women’s Center in their estate plans. Many long-time supporters are proud to call themselves members.

“There is great work taking place at The Center, and I love to give others the funds to do great work! I mean, what better place to invest?” said Legacy Society member Elizabeth Ray.

Jude Ryan echoes her sentiment, “I ask myself, ‘Would I want to live in a community that did not have a Women’s

Center?’ And the answer is, ‘No!’ So, for Terry and me, it wasn’t a matter of will we give a portion of our estate, it was more a question of how much?”

The Legacy Society continues to carry out Karen’s vision of helping people who come in the door of The Center broken or in crisis leave transformed and hopeful. “That’s what we have done—made a commitment to the continued success of The Center as it continues to change lives in our area,” said member Bob Herchert.

For information about joining the Legacy Society, please call 817.927.4006.

Now in its third year, The Women's Center Young Professionals are helping further the work of The Center through volunteering, advocating, fundraising and friend-raising.

This year, members enjoyed several events including networking happy hours, a reception with current board members, lunch and learns with CEO Laura Hilgart, and volunteer activities such as holiday gift wrapping and Valentine’s care package assembly.

“Our legacy is not The Women’s

Center building, but is instead

all the people that came

through these doors broken or

in crisis, and who left better.”

~ Karen Perkins

“I joined TWCYP because I was

new in town, and it has been a

great way to connect with others.

I’ve enjoyed being a part of

something that is meaningful to

me, for a mission I support.”

In 2019 we took baby steps, and in some cases giant steps, towards turning those opportunities into reality.

As part of our continuing commitment to excellence, we trained every staff person at The Women’s Center in Trust Based Relational Intervention and led the community in training other professionals in this trauma-informed, evidence-based model of care.

We added new staff in Rape Crisis & Victim Services to address the need for more counseling, case management, and trauma training in the community.

We added new staff to expand the evidenced-based PEARLS in-home counseling program for isolated, depressed older adults in Tarrant County.

We secured funding to continue implementation of the evidence-based Working Family Success model of employment and financial stability services in Tarrant County and continued to consult with others in Texas who are moving toward this model of service.

We engaged University of North Texas Health Science Center to establish The Women’s Center’s Play it Safe!® program as evidenced-based for reducing the risk of child sexual abuse.

We began a space redesign/renovation project to address existing program needs and future growth, including an investment in technology to increase our capacity to provide programs and training in a digital format.

We established an employee Diversity & Inclusion Team to help The Women’s Center become a more diverse, inclusive and culturally competent agency, with an initial focus on identifying ways to improve recruitment and retention of bilingual staff.

We are proud of our accomplishments in 2019, and indeed over the last 40 years, which have propelled us into a new decade—a decade in which our goal will always be:

 To secure enough resources to sustain our important work;

 To be the most effective and efficient organization possible;

To earn the confidence of people who invest their time and resources in our programs and services; and,

Most importantly, to earn the confidence of those who entrust us to help them. They deserve nothing less than our very best.

BEING BETTER

DOING MORE

As we stand on the foundation of 40 years of work in Tarrant County and look toward the future, we are energized by the opportunities we have to do more and be better in the service of people striving to overcome violence, crisis and poverty.
