To My Readers...........

The fortunes of our great country can be traced to the different attitudes we have adopted towards women throughout history. In the great days they were treated as equals of men and not as their duplicates. There were times when we looked upon them as commodities to be bought and sold. Even Yudhistira pawned his wife Draupadi. When she was dragged into the court hall and insulted by Dussasana not human but a divine intervention saved her honour.

Then came the Indian freedom revolution which witnessed the emancipation of women. They participated on an equal status with men in the freedom struggle. After the achievement of freedom several legislative measures have been enacted with a view to the equal treatment and safety of women in an unpredictable society. But legislative measures are not enough as they have been violated time and again. Not everything we do comes up roses. To expect perfection is cavalier, but to know that mistakes are a part of the journey is wisdom. The climate of opinion has to change and women themselves have to exert their utmost to improve their stature in a country where their feet still remain shackled by the same evil that haunted Draupadi. The recent acts of barbarism that took place in Delhi as well as in many other parts of the nation are tragedies beyond what the human senses can assimilate.

The best thermometer to the progress of a nation they say is its treatment of its women. In this country where the fate of women moves about in a topsy-turvy fashion, their security today precariously hangs in the balance. As Joseph Conard rightly puts it, “Being a woman is a terribly diffi cult task, since it consists principally in dealing with men.”The secure woman is able to separate the chaff from the grain and possesses inner strength and the wisdom to be able to create, change and adapt as necessary.

The yearnings of a woman’s heart and the way of her life are often miles apart. The confi dent and secure woman knows what she wants and goes after it with unfl appable action, undeterred by obstacles that come up along the way. They keep to the moral standard which is innate in their nature. With the winds of change ever blowing, we realize that we may not currently possess all the tools that will take women to their goals, but we are always ready to learn what we need to know in order to get them there.

The articles and poems that you will come along in this issue dwell on such issues of a very contemporary nature prevalent in our society. The English, Hindi, Marathi, Sindhi, French, Punjabi and Gujarati Sections cover a wide variety of subjects and exemplify the words of Virginia Woolf, “Lock up your libraries if you like; but there is no gate, no lock, no bolt that you can set upon the freedom of my mind.” Kudos to these young and budding talents!

We ardently hope that this issue will bear you upon its wings of imagination and emotion and you will cherish these enlightening sentiments as much as we enjoyed in putting them together.

Glimpses of the year 2012-13Every edition of our magazine covers a vast canvas of creativity, pearls of thoughts and the innumerable accolades won by our students in the span of an academic year. Even the least unassuming person wants to be heard, regarded and applauded , especially the youngsters . We believe, this helps to motivate and infl uence them positively in an enduring way and our magazine is an expression of this belief .

Academics is the main stay for any institution and centrifugal to all extra-curricular events as known to all. Standing testimony to this, our score card of this year also has been a notch higher with the amazing results. The number of distinction has gone up and the overall passing percentage has been higher than the university average in every course offered by us . This has widened our horizon and encouraged our institution to add two more segments in the self-fi nancing section,viz., B.Sc. (I.T.) and B.F.M ( Bachelor of fi nancial management).

Mr. Sachin Pendse, our eminent faculty in environmental studies has successfully completed his doctoral degree and quite a few faculty members have either registered for Ph.D. or are preparing to plunge into research . An exclusive section has been included in this edition, highlighting the participation in national level seminars , research and published works of our faculty members.

Apart from a number of faculty development programmes and workshops organized by various departments, our institution has hosted a national level conference on “Women empowerment and entrepreneurship”.The related aspects of the topic were enumerated on by a panel of experts from the respective spheres. The distinguished speakers were Ms. Jenobia Doctor, ( Founder and Managing Director of ‘vision’ ), Dr. Reeta Sonawat (HOD of Human development,S.N.D.T. Women’s University ),Adv. Rajesh Mudholkar (President, Jus Publicum and Legal Awareness Charitable Trust), Dr. Rohini Kelkar ( Principal,Vidyalankar School of Information Technology),Dr.Firdous Shroff (Trainer in Financial Education,Senate member, Pune University) and Dr.Seethalakshmy N.(Prof.,S.I.E.S.College of Commerce and Economics).A workshop on ‘Sexual Harassment at the workplace’ was organized jointly by our college and Tolani

Shipping Corporation Ltd. wherein the noted social activist, Ms. Santhi Mazumdar delivered the keynote address on the legal and social factors pertaining to sexual harassment which is rampant in all spheres and levels of our system.

Symposiums and presentations were organized by the Career and Placement Cell to enable the students to choose a prospective path according to the bend of their minds and trends in the jobfront. Resource personnel from different vocations unraveled to the ambitious youngsters the bumps and gambles encountered in various professions at different facets.

‘Goodwill is the mightiest practical force in the universe’ and this is invaluable when extended to the less privileged and the marginalized lot. N.S.S, C.W.D.C, H.E.P.S.N, E.O.C. and the Rotaract Club of our college have excelled in the art of giving. Sensitising the youth is sensible when it is demonstrated through noble deeds and giving them an opportunity to feel how privileged they are while sharing the pain and poverty of the under privileged. All the above associations have certainly conscientized the youth to be compassionate and caring.

Activities are gymnastics to the body and music to the mind. Our retro section is full of the various unrivalled achievements and activities of our sportsmen.They have won various district, state and national level prizes in various fi elds like boxing, judo, rifl e shooting, archery, etc. and made us proud. The Annual Sports Day was conducted on the Dominic Savio School grounds wherein our students participated with great enthusiasm and vigour. A self-defense course was also conducted for the women of Sher-e-Punjab which aimed at physically empowering the women of the vicinity.

The Talent Pool which provides a platform to the diversely talented students of the college this year managed to set another milestone by bagging 191 prizes in various inter-collegiate activities conducted by other colleges across the face of Mumbai. They have set a new benchmark for the next batch of budding talents. TALENZZIAA – our indigenous inter-collegiate fest with its theme of The Fusion Quest this

year spanned across three days buzzing with a wide range of activities under various heads like Performing, Literary, Fine Arts and Live Events. Sur and Khanak were also taken care of by the Talenzziaa organizing committee. A new addition of baking and make-up workshops acted like icing on the cake. Celsius - the entertainment programme wherein ex-students put up a show for the current students and Jashn – the show put up by the winners of inter-collegiate events were mega hits.

Various other associations like the E.L.A., H.S.M., M.V.M., G.S.M. P.S.M., Sindhi Circle, etc. organized various literary and cultural activities for the students to hone their varied interests. M.V.M’s Sanskruti showcased the vibrant culture of Maharashtra. A new endeavor ‘AGON’ was taken up by the Cultural Association which conducted an intra-collegiate event on a small scale for the self-fi nancing students of our college.The college fest RAZZMATAZZ was another activity among the spray of efforts that were undertaken to keep the spirit of competition and creative abilities alive. Various other departments also ogranised various fun-fi lled events including Eureka. All these activities would not have been possible without

the undying support of our Principal, the faculty members and the non-teaching staff.

The Annual Prize Distribution was like music to the ears of the rank holders and the prize winners. They were felicitated by the Chief guest and the distinguished members of the management graced the occasion with their august presence.

Hope doesn't come from calculating whether the good news in winning out over the bad. It's simply a choice to take action. Even in the darkness, every colour can be found. And every day of rain brings water fl owing to things growing in the ground. Enlightenment thus in the hardest of circumstances is our pathway to growth and success and amicable relations with all.

Achievements of our students as well as faculty in academics and activities have propelled us onto the orbit of eminence and pitched us in a perpetual pursuit towards perfection in all the associated arrays of education. Thus we pledge to pursue progress and build on it by enabling the youngsters to discern their intrinsic talents and strength to excel in this brave new world.

There was a boy who, during his College days, chose

to drop out of the College and join some creative

classes. A very tough choice to make indeed if one

wants to have a stable life. At a

tender age of 21, he along with

his guru Steve Wozniak started,

what now is one of the world’s

most admired companies, ‘Apple

Computers’. And now I don’t need

to name the person I am talking

about for his work speaks more

than one can do of himself. The

point which I want to mention

is that a choice taken by a single

person out of the fi ve billion people

living in the world has made such a

diff erence in the world that the world is still walking

on the road chosen by him even after he is no more

there to show the direction.

Steve Jobs was himself a believer in the power

of choices. He always tried to connect the dots

in the past. When at the age of 30, he was fi red

from the company he created; Jobs found himself

unemployed but he chose it as a freedom rather than

a curse. In fact, he later said that getting fi red from

Apple was the best thing to ever happen to him,

because it allowed him to think more creatively and

re-experience the joys of starting a company. And

with such a radical thinking not just Steve Jobs but

any person would go really ahead in his life.

Most of us in our lives keep wasting our useful time

in sticking to the past and crying over the spilt milk

where in fact we could have gone ahead, taken right

decisions at the right time and made our work

fruitful. Life works in cycles. Once we do something,

it has an eff ect on the next thing we do. The choices

we make result into specifi c actions,

the actions may be right or they may

turn into a mistake, the mistakes we do

become experiences, the experiences

we meet with become attitudes,

the attitude we develop makes our

character and our character is what we

choose to be.

We shall always remember that what

we are today is the result of what we

did in the past and what we will be

tomorrow will be the result of what we

do today. Every moment of our present

life is the result of choices made in the past.

Thus, our choices govern our future and our choices

are based on the experience we have had from our

childhood till now. What all we have learnt, we have

heard and accepted, we have thought and said

aff ect our decisions. If the impact of our previous

experience is a good one, then all well and good,

but if it’s a bad one then it’s a matter of our choice.

We can choose our decision to be a biased one or a

radical one. It will be possible only if we understand

one thing, that at any point in our life, whatsoever

may be the situation, we are free to choose. No one

can force us to do something, if we don’t want to do

something. This may be taken into a positive way or

a negative way, but it is an impregnable truth just

like the existence of life.

Chess is one of the games that very explicitly refl ects

this principle. Every move we play, becomes a

deciding factor on how the game will end. Just like

that in our life, every decision we choose decides our

future, hence every choice should be taken after a

good deal of thought. And even if you decide not to

choose anything, you still make a choice.

We can choose to quit, we can choose to be sad, to

be angry, to live for vengeance, to accept failure,

to get depressed, to stay down, to stop believing

in Him, to deceive, to steal, to hate, to curse or we

can choose to continue, to calm down, to forgive, to

persevere, to be fi lled with zeal, to carry on, to thank

Him, to believe, to give, to love, to benefact, to be

satisfi ed along with a will to grow and most of all, we

can always choose to smile and be happy.

Sissy, Sassy, chancy, classy and freakin’; That’s what defi nes the youth today. In this ever-changing world of diverse urbanity, the youth have started to transgress social and ethical norms. Gizmos and gadgets are our pals! Our hanging junction could be the fave College canteen! Our life runs on a simple funda: follow your heart! Irrespective of the idea of wrong and right doing we have paved another way: What we wish to do! That is the precise reason so as to why a section of society gawks at us with the apprehension of “OH-THESE-YOUTH-OF-TODAY”!

NEVERTHELESS, the world today, looks upon us as the torchbearers of tomorrow! While, our modernistic ideas prevailing the 21st century and infl uenced by the Western philosophy repudiates one faction of the world, this faction portends to see the future in an abyss of darkness. Our hypothesis fi nds slut walk an eff ective methodology of waiving for what is right on the contrary history tends to speak averse of it! The modus operandi of the youth and the non-youth squabbles in every aspect. And the root cause of it is the Change of Eras! Change being the fundamental principle of nature, has bought about counter pole way of thinking in varied age groups. And the youth, as a matter-of-course is the real inheritor of the legacy

handed down by the ancestors! The youth today, living life on its mores and principles a.k.a fundas, happens to work out in a manner not typical and customary but the one that is exceptional. Because of the prodigious chasm in generations, sometimes, the cool notions of youth may not be satisfactory to the old timers.

So how about this! Do we give it a damn? No way! The future is ours! We are livers and artisans of it. Its time that we do our bit. Our eff ectuation is pretty evident and fair enough for the world to rely on us! With the advancement of this techno addict world, a youth’s priority may not be society’s welfare but our personal recreation. However that doesn’t exempt us from discharging the prime duties! Youth is the promise of the nation. For a better tomorrow let us gear up our lives and lay the groundwork to whip and forge ourselves ahead, eliminating all the excruciating, vile and impertinent fl otsam and jetsam. We are the sole arbiter of the endowed present and brainchild of tomorrow’s world! The future beckons us and we are up for it!

It is all very predictable. Who said that stealing something could be exciting? And what is so particularly intelligent about some smart by-stander catching the thief? As far as he was concerned, it merely indicated stupidity on his part. There are half a dozen eyes in the sky and they are all connected to a constantly buzzing nervous system that we call ‘the computer’-omnipresent but psychologically sterile, incapable of initiative and original thinking.

But after all it was man who had invented computers. So, there had to be a man sitting behind the computer and peering through CCTV cameras, like one of those alien-slugs that infested human brains as in one of the pulpy science-fi ction novels that he used to read. In this case, it was a woman-hadn’t he noticed her locked up voluntarily inside a mundane glass and concrete cabin? She was a swarthy woman, dressed in a predictable nylon salwar kameez. Her dark and thick-set face fl ared up in anger as she faced him. On her face was written boldly, like a gigantic advertisement of off ers, a demand for an answer.

‘Why did you walk out with the book without getting it issued?’

He said nothing. There was nothing to say, after all.

Then came the familiar reprimand.

‘Is this what your parents have taught you? Stealing books from the libraries?’

She was obviously disgusted with his act. And somehow, he also felt disgusted with himself.

He loved books. That was what he announced always- when fi lling up those campy and colorful autograph books in his childhood, when registering online to become a part of those burgeoning social networking websites, when talking with his friends and so on. And like most bibliophiles, he had his reservations. He loved the world of fi ction, albeit of

one set in the real world. Recently, he had been thoroughly enjoying the enchanting prose of Salman Rushdie, which he found hidden with realism. He loved to leaf through classics, Arthur Hailey, spy novels, stories and novels of his homeland,

which eventually made him love India even more, biographies, William Dalrymple’s travelogues etc. It was a big and busy world of adventure, romance, and intrigue. It was where he could glide in and out, like a besotted lover savoring the warmth of its inviting arms, like a starry-eyed traveler taking along souvenirs for the way back to reality. Books did not just fascinate him- they eventually came to defi ne him, his actions, ideals and thoughts. And they thought that he was a thief!

‘Now give me your I-Card. Give it to me.’ It was a clear-cut, precise demand and the muscles on that swarthy face twitched. Elsewhere silence reigned. It was if the discovery of the ‘alleged theft’ had broken a bubble beneath which everything went on monotonously with a robotic regularity. Noisy students streamed out and in of bookshelves and racks and peons seated in counters glared at the

crowds lined up with paperbacks and hardcovers. Elsewhere, the scholarly and garrulous alike perched over wooden desks with books and idle talk.

All that was for now paused and all eyes were fi xed on the little scene. He was dimly aware of the attention; his face was fi xed on that of the woman. He said back tersely, ‘Please Ma’am, one last chance. I promise I won’t do it again’. ‘No. Give it to me. No Last chance. You know, I can take your I-Card and suspend you for an entire year’. She was now threatening him. ‘But I am taking it only for two weeks. That would be enough punishment’. He gave up and removed the card hung around his neck. ‘Okay’, she said,’ Come back after two weeks and take it back’.

The activity resumed around him. He felt his cheeks burn with shame. What would his parents think? In the very fi rst year of College, he ruined everything. He felt like crying. Then he reasoned and consoled himself; his parents would not be really angry. It was only a book and it was only his fi rst time.

The book in question was Frederick Forsyth’s ‘The Avenger’. Forsyth was one of his favorite authors. It so happened that a month ago, he had issued another Forsyth paperback ‘The Fourth Protocol’. Normally, students were required to return books within a week. But he had kept the book for reading for a month. According to rules, this meant a heavy fi ne.

He knew it and was bothered by the sheer bureaucratic stupidity of it. So, instead of returning the book ‘offi cially’, he sneaked inside the shelves and placed the book back in its original place. Then, he picked out ‘The Avenger’ and with studied pace, strode out of the book shelves. He was out!

But something made him hesitate. It was his instinct of restraint. He turned back to return the book, when…

Now he had lost his I-Card and what did that mean? Teachers often reminded him and others that the card was a symbol of identity as a student of the College. Is that so? He was still disgusted but no longer with himself. He was disgusted with the stringently binding rules that indirectly made him resort to theft. It was not even stealing! He would return it once he fi nished reading it. Why can’t they understand that?

He strode out defi antly. Bizarre visions crowded his devastated mind- like a melee of spectators crowding a blazing fi re. They would be bizarre for someone else but not for him. To him, they made perfect sense, they excited him. He fondly, perversely, remembered the scenes from his favourite Hollywood movies. He wanted to barge in like thieves in masks with guns and take away the loot. He remembered Al Pacino in ‘Dog Day Afternoon’ and he wished to create chaos, terror and let all hell loose. He wanted revenge!

But as he walked home, he suddenly stumbled upon a clear verdict. Somehow, he felt the defi ance dying out, like the last fl icker of a dimming lamp. Now, everything was dark. Then, like a hellish beam of light, the truth dawned on him. It was his new identity that he had to live with, even as he would get his I-Card back. He was the book thief…

Having read about the Gitanjali, the only thing that came to my mind was how creative the author, Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore is. Words are inadequate to describe this great man- a mentor for many and as some say an inspiration for the deceived. He also pointed out the various social problems through writings and tried to bring about reforms in the traditional Indian caste systems. He really wanted the caste system in India to be eradicated. He often focused on the mixing of Western and eastern cultures. One of his poems in the Gitanjali refl ects this:

“You made me known to the friends which I didn’t know, you made me sit in the foyers which were not mine, then who was far brought them near and you made a stranger a brother”

He also believed that languages play a very important role in our life. It is through this that a sense of unity can be developed. Tagore was a great contributor to the Indian literature and brought laurels to the country and continent by being the fi rst non-European to win the Nobel prize in literature for this fabulous creation- the Gitanjali in 1913 mainly for the English translation of 103 selected poems from his original Bengali collection of 157 poems and also poetries from his other books. The Gitanjali in English was published by W. B. Yeats in 1912who was stirred by the poems. He loved the spiritual, mystical and philosophical writings. He felt it was their inner voice that they could hear through the writings. Rabindranath Tagore is also said to be the fi rst among saints who has not refused to live, but has spoken out life itself. He has conquered most of the genres of literature by writing songs, plays, novels and short stories. During the British rule he used to voice his opinions

against the British through his speeches and writings. He motivated the people to fi ght for the motherland with ‘Vande Mataram’.

Just Gitanjali isn’t enough to praise him. His other works like Gora-about the orthodox Hindus and liberal BrahmoSamaj in Calcutta, The King of Dark Chambers and The Hungry Stones-about the thoughts and feelings of men, women and children are also acclaimed works. That reminds of one of his most famous poems in the Gitanjali which speaks about children playing at the sea shore. They do not know anything of adulthood and still we can learn from them.

One can surely be charmed by the thoughts depicted in each of the poems. However it is sad that children today hardly know or take interest in the Gitanjali or any of his works. It is very important to know our culture fi rst than to know others’. It’s the same here. Just because my teacher told me to write about him, I know so much about him and it also increased my urge to read about him. Had I not read all of this I feel I would have missed an epoch making piece of literature that everyone should know and relate to.

I would like to conclude with a quote of this great luminary, “The highest education is that which does not merely give us information but makes our life in harmony with all existence.”

L’inde, mon pays est bien connu pour sa gastronomie délicieuse. Le gens autour du monde viennent ici à goûter. Ies plats délicieux indiens de chaque region d’Inde qui a leur propre méthode de cuisine variée, qui est totalement unique et, diff érente de l’autre.

La nourriture indien de Nord est délicieuse. Les repas sont lourds. Les Indiens du Nord mangent beaucoup de piments, de fromages, de lait, de yaourt. Iis mangent aussi des sucres comme Gulab Jamun, Jalebi, Bhalu Shahi, Kulfi etc.

La nourriture de sud est magnifi que. Il est épice. Les plats de sud de de L’inde sont Pesarattu, Idli, Upma,

Je m’appelle Lekha. J’habite à viue de Mumbai. Elle est très grande et beue viue. j’ai ma petite famille.

Il y a quatre personnes dans ma famille. Ce sont mon père, ma mère et mon frère. Mon père s’appelle Naresh Mehta. Il a quarante-et-un ans. Il est homme d’aff aires. Il est grande et gentil. Il aime regarder la tété. Il aime manger beaucoup. Je dis, Il est gourmand.

Le riz et le poisson sont la nourritture préférée de l’est de L’Inde. La nourritture est riche en saveuse. Les plats sont Begun Bhaja, Cholar Dal, Momos et les bonbons sont Rasgulla, Sandesh Malapua.

Les plats de L’ouset de L’Inde sont doux et épicés. Les plats sont Khaman, Pav Bhaji, Churma etc. Le plat poisson de Goa est divin.

La cuisine indienne est vraiment délicieuse.
