MESSAGE OF WELCOME

I wish you a very warm welcome to the 2013 Irish Society of Urology Annual Scientific Meeting held this year in conjunction with the Urological Club of Great Britain and Ireland (UCGBI). The UCGBI is the oldest of the Urology Travelling Clubs and is composed of Members from both of these islands who work in University Hospital Urology Departments. The ISU is delighted to have them at our meeting this year.

Amongst the UCGBI’s founding members in 1948 was the ISU’s own Terence Millin. This year, I am very pleased to personally welcome my good friend and UCGBI member, Mr Adrian Joyce, the President of the British Association of Urological Surgeons.

I also want to particularly welcome you all to Wicklow, my adopted county of the past 20 years. Even though I am a mere “blow-in” as far as the Wicklow natives are concerned, I am immensely proud to show off to you one of the most beautiful places on the planet. I hope your time in Powerscourt will give you some sense of that pride.

Our Annual Scientific Meeting this year has adopted the same academic format introduced last year in Hollywood, County Down, by our Past President, Ron Grainger. That meeting was scientifically most successful and I trust this year will be equally successful. This year we had a large number of submitted abstracts, and I am so grateful to all who sent us their hard work for consideration. I am sorry that not everyone was successful in having their papers accepted. The quality of papers submitted was astoundingly high for an island of a mere 6.3 million inhabitants.

Our Guest Speakers for this year’s meeting, Mike Naslund from the US and Ian Eardley from the UK, are each two of the nicest men you would ever want to meet, both are excellent surgeons and both have great scientific minds. Mike was my senior in the training programme in Baltimore, and Ian and I have worked together for many years on the Board of the BJU International in London. You will enjoy watching them both in action over the next few days.

I would also like to express my deep appreciation to my colleagues presenting and chairing programme sessions at the meeting.

I am delighted to announce the introduction of two innovations for this years meeting; first and foremost, the abstracts this year will be kindly published by Mr Ian Pearce, Editor of The Journal of Clinical Urology, an organ of The British Association of Urological Surgeons, secondly the ISU main identity badge was re-created and as a result of the improved resolution we were in a position to introduce compulsory ISU branded templates for our poster and podium presentations.

I invite you to join us for next year’s meeting which will take place in the Malton Hotel, Killarney on Thursday 25th of September & Friday 26th of September 2014.

PROFESSOR MICHAEL NASLUND

Michael Naslund is the Professor and Chief of Urology at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. He received a Bachelor of Science from Davidson College and a Doctorate in Medicine from The Johns Hopkins University. Mike completed a Residency and Fellowship in Urology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and was on the Staff of Hopkins before moving to his current position at the University of Maryland. Unusually for a Urologist, he has completed a Masters in Business Administration from the Wharton School of Finance. He has published widely on Prostate Disease and Health Economics. Mike is a Texan. He has never lost his Texan accent and has never lost that innate ability to take a complex problem and make it very understandable. He is a great communicator.

MR IAN EARDLEY

Ian Eardley qualified from Sidney Sussex College and Addenbrooke’s Hospital Cambridge in 1981, undertaking surgical and urological training in Portsmouth, Cambridge and Norwich. He became a Consultant Urologist in St James’s Hospital in Leeds in 1993, where he has developed a general urological practise with particular interest in sexual dysfunction, genital surgery and genitourinary reconstruction. His research has included work on the quality of life after penectomy, urinary tract infection and sexual dysfunction.

He has written or co-authored seven urological textbooks and published over 175 chapters or scientific papers. He was the Director of the Office of Education for the British Association of Urological Surgeons between 2002–2006, Chairman of the Specialist Advisory Committee in Urology between 2007–2009 and a BAUS council member between 2000–2003. He was Surgical Director of the Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Programme 2009-2011 and is current Chairman of the Joint Committee for Surgical Training. He is an elected Member of Council of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Council Lead for Training. In addition he is the Immediate Past President of the European Society of Sexual Medicine and Associate Editor of the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
