Annual MBV Homeowner VerificationThe MountainBrook Village HOA database is the foundation of

the online and printed directories, as well as, website access to the private, members only pages.

Home sales impact this database the most. Over the last two years, more than 250 homes changed hands. As a result, it has been determined that an annual membership audit must take place to assure the validity of the database information.

The audit mandates all homeowners review and confirm or update their contact information. Only homeowners can provide this information.

Unfortunately, homeowners, who do not provide this information, will not be included in the 2019 MBV Directory as it would be irresponsible to publish this information without verification.

The membership drive commences on March 15th and culminates on August 15th. Those homeowners who have provided their email addresses to the website during the 2018 membership drive will receive an email on March 15th with information on the process of confirming or updating their information. Another reminder will go out on June 15th. Watch for these emails as it will make verification of information easier than anything we have done before. If you do not receive them in your Inbox, check your Spam or Junk emails.

Those who do not have access to technology or do not have an email address can call Chris Bukovac, Website Administrator at (480) 577-4309 for assistance.

If you didn’t submit your information into the membership database during the summer of 2017, you can do so now by going to the website, mbvaz.org. Point your mouse on About MBV, scroll

down the list and click on Join. Fill out the form. You will get an email from the website system with details on setting your private password.

First Service Residential, our management company, also requires your information updates. This information must be submitted via a specific form which can be obtained at the office. It is used for mailing items like HOA Dues or Email Blasts.

Thank you in advance for your contribution to this process. We appreciate your support of our community directory and website.

Community CornerBOARD HIGHLIGHTSSubmitted by Peter Cavoto, President

Retirement can be a time to try something new and serve others. We welcome new Board members to the Board! We are excited

you have offered your time to serve the community. The new Board members are Chris Bukovac, Janet Christopherson and Audrey Morganegg. The Board would also like to extend a sincere thank you to Wayne Walworth for his service the last two years on the Board.

This BOD’s are trying hard to have user input and multiple bids for expenses. Some expenses this month were erosion control at several sites, a new condenser for one of Sunset’s air conditioning units, and fans and bypass dampers for the Fired Arts building. The two concrete walkways and recycle refurbishment were tabled until March for more bids.

The Planning Committee presented the architectural drawing for the Sunset remodel which will be on display in the office. They had input from over 1500 residents and 49 groups. The greatest needs were temperature, sound, light and space. Windows provide the greatest sound loss. User rooms have increased. The kitchen and bathrooms and two exits will be ADA compliant. The next step is to go to bid and compare the end of year financials and reserve study for funding. No additional parking is necessary and the large windows to the outside will not have barriers.

The design for Pickleball was received from the Architect. Building and Grounds advised the BOD to plan for the future as pickleball is growing. B&G will be looking at further court development as well as design “option A” with input from Pickleball players and make recommendations to the Board.

Steering committee members of Activity, Architectural, Budget & Finance, Building and Grounds, Communication and Planning were approved. Budget and Finance and Building and Grounds submitted charter revisions that were reviewed and approved by the Board. Budget and Finance, Planning, Communication and Activities also had reviewed their charters last year. Thank you to our committees

and committee chairs for mentoring those on your committees. We express our gratitude for your service and providing research and recommendations to the board. If you are interested in serving, please reach out to your committee chairs. Their names and numbers are located on the members website at mbvaz.org.

Pottery club requested a wheel to be used by members and the instructor at classes, which is funded out of future development for $1700.

The Mesquite Center Canyon Cookout has been well received. Big thanks to Ed Butler and Jack Twa and their wives for volunteering to help with this every Wednesday.

As always, please feel free to email the board at [email protected] with anything.

Those Pesky HOA’sChanges in your Back, Front & Side YardBy Debbie O’Brien

Many homeowners are making some beautiful improvements to the exterior of their house, yard, driveway, sidewalks, windows, fences and walls. A reminder--You must get prior approval from the Architectural Committee for anything and everything you add, change or delete from your BACK, FRONT and SIDE yard.

Yes, anything and everything you do in your back yard must ALSO be approved. This is not new, contrary to rumors that are going around. If you add or change a hot tub, pavers, patio cover, plants, fountain, etc. in your back yard the Architectural Committee needs an Architectural Request submitted prior to starting the work. The Committee meets every other Thursday and you will have an answer right away. The Architectural Request form is available in the Activities Office and on the MBV website. Need help or have questions? Call or send me an email [email protected]

Community Association Living

Your Commitment as a HomeownerThe association is glad you’ve found a home in our community.

We presume it has all the amenities you were seeking and you’re settling in nicely. This is the time the association likes to remind new homeowners that common-interest communities like ours create some unique obligations to the community and to other residents within it:

Read and comply with the community’s governing documents. You should have received a package of documents well before you closed on your home. If you didn’t, check the association’s website or ask the manager for copies. Make sure you understand what’s included in them, particularly the rules about pets, parking, your home’s exterior maintenance, architectural guidelines and when you must pay association assessments.

Provide current contact information to the association management office. Make sure they know how to reach you in case of an emergency, and ask them to notify you of annual meetings and other important events.

Maintain your property according to established standards. The community’s appearance can add value to all the homes within it—including yours—so it’s important to keep landscaping neatly groomed and your home’s exterior well-maintained and in accordance with the guidelines.

Treat association leaders honestly and respectfully. Board members are homeowners—just like you—who have volunteered to give their time and energy freely to govern the community. While you should share your concerns about the community with them, do so in a way that’s constructive, informative and helpful.

Attend board meetings and vote in community elections. Board meetings are open to homeowners who wish to sit in and keep up with issues under discussion.

Pay association assessments and other obligations on time. Your regular assessments pay for common-area maintenance, amenities and other shared expenses. If you don’t pay on time, the burden for paying your portion of the association’s bills, like water, electricity and trash removal, falls on your neighbors.

Ensure that tenants, visiting relatives and friends adhere to all rules and regulations. If you are leasing your home, you’re liable for maintaining the condition of the home and for the behavior of those who live in it. Make sure to screen tenants thoroughly, and familiarize them with the community’s rules.

April’s Flashback Dance – FREELynn Cochrane

It is never too early to start thinking about our upcoming ‘Flashback Dance’ on Friday, April 13, featuring the variety band, Southern Drawl. For some residents, this may be the last opportunity to reminisce with old and new friends about this year’s fantastic dance season and the numerous terrific bands who played for us. We will have a collection of photos from all the dances. Come and see if you are in the gallery. As a thank you for your outstanding attendance, this will also be a FREE dance. Just sign up at the activity office to receive your free ticket for admission. Elton John’s 1972 song, Crocodile Rock, may come to mind, “I never knew me a better time and guess I never will” .... well at least until our next dance.

“Well, yes - and in a way, no”. YOU CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU, but you can take Grandpa’s philosophy of life: “don’t do anything you don’t want to, because we don’t have much time - any of us”. The cast of 18 actors, the Director, and the many behind-the-scenes volunteers extend a million “Thank You’s” to our audiences who packed the house for our three performances. The cast offers a very special recognition to its Director RANDY RATCLIFF who had the vision, confidence and patience to direct a play with 18 actors, 10 of whom were on stage for their first times. The plays only faux pas was when Penny had a wardrobe malfunction with her grey wig which was quickly replaced with much laughter from both Penny and the audience. We hope you enjoyed the new faces on stage who may become the MBV players of the future.

Next year’s play will be MOON OVER BUFFALO. Kathy

Buelow will Direct. She held auditions in early March and will award roles to lucky applicants. “The longest day in an actor’s life is waiting for a phone call the day after auditions”. And to those who received roles, remember “There are no such things as small roles, only small actors”.

2nd Annual Lin Bartlett Golf Classic

Gold Canyon Golf Resort6100 S. Kings Ranch Rd. | Gold Canyon, AZ 85118

By Pam BurksPlease join us in honoring our dear friend and

colleague, Lin Bartlett, in the “2nd Annual Lin Bartlett Golf Classic” on Sunday, April 8, 2018. The Benefit will take place on our beautiful Sidewinder Golf Course. Lin was the Restaurant Manager at Gold Canyon Golf Resort & Spa since 2002. Sadly, Lin passed away on February 14th, after fighting a very courageous battle against pancreatic cancer for 4 years. Her willpower and endurance have been an inspiration to us all. The Medical bills continue to be a constant battle for the family, so let’s come together as a Community to help.

The format for the Tournament will be a 4-person scramble (Registration Opens 3/1/18.) Tournament typically sells out very fast, and we are expecting a sellout crowd again this year. We strongly encourage early signup. There are multiple ways golfers and non-

golfers can help in this cause. The success of this Event is extremely important. Please consider signing up for a Sponsorship or donating a Silent Auction prize. For more information on Sponsorship, Silent Auction Donations or signup please contact [email protected] or 480-671-5566.

Entry Fee is $105 Inclusive of tax. Tournament Includes: Donation, Green fee, Cart w/GPS, Range

Balls, Luncheon, Drink Ticket & Prizes. “The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by

the compassionate actions of its members.” Coretta Scott King

March 2018

1950's E-Mail...

Long ago and far away,In a land that time forgot, Before the days of Dylan,Or the dawn of Camelot.

There lived a race of innocents,And they were you and me,

For Ike was in the White HouseIn that land where we were born,

Where navels were for oranges,And Peyton Place was porn.

We longed for love and romance,

And waited for our Prince, Eddie Fisher married Liz,

And no one's seen him since.

We danced to 'Little Darlin',And sang to 'Stagger Lee'

And cried for Buddy HollyIn the Land That Made Me, Me.

Only girls wore earrings then,And 3 was one too many,

And only boys wore flat-top cuts,Except for Jean McKinney.

And only in our wildest dreamsDid we expect to see

A boy named George with Lipstick,In the Land That Made Me, Me.

We fell for Frankie Avalon,Annette was oh, so nice,

And when they made a movie,They never made it twice.

We didn't have a Star Trek Five,Or Psycho Two and Three, Or Rocky-Rambo Twenty

In the Land That Made Me, Me.

Miss Kitty had a heart of gold,And Chester had a limp,

And Reagan was a DemocratWhose co-star was a chimp.

We had a Mr. Wizard,But not a Mr. T,

And Oprah couldn't talk yet,In the Land That Made Me, Me.

We had our share of heroes,We never thought they'd go, At least not Bobby Darin,

Or Marilyn Monroe. For youth was still eternal,

And life was yet to be, And Elvis was forever

In the Land That Made Me, Me.

We'd never seen the rock bandThat was Grateful to be Dead,

And Airplanes weren't named Jefferson,And Zeppelins were not Led

And Beatles lived in gardens then,And Monkees lived in trees,

Madonna was MaryIn the Land That Made Me, Me.

We'd never heard of microwaves,Or telephones in cars,

And babies might be bottle-fed,But they were not grown in jars.

And pumping iron got wrinkles out,And 'gay' meant fancy-free,

And dorms were never co-EdIn the Land That Made Me, Me.

We hadn't seen enough of jetsTo talk about the lag,

And microchips were what was leftAt the bottom of the bag.

And hardware was a box of nails,And bytes came from a flea,

And rocket ships were fictionIn the Land That Made Me, Me.

T-Birds came with portholes,And side shows came with freaks, And bathing suits came big enough

To cover both your cheeks.

And Coke came just in bottles,And skirts below the knee, And Castro came to power

Near the Land That Made Me, Me.

We had no Crest with Fluoride,We had no Hill Street Blues,

We had no patterned pantyhoseOr Lipton herbal tea

Or prime-time ads for those dysfunctionsIn the Land That Made Me, Me.

There were no golden arches,No Perrier to chill,

And fish were not called Wanda,And cats were not called Bill.

And middle-aged was 35And old was forty-three,

And ancient were our parentsIn the Land That Made Me, Me.

But all things have a season,Or so we've heard them say,

And now instead of MaybellineWe swear by Retin-A.

They send us invitationsTo join AARP,

We've come a long way, baby,From the Land That Made Me, Me.

So now we face a brave new worldIn slightly larger jeans,

And wonder why they're usingSmaller print in magazines

And we tell our children's childrenOf the way it used to be, Long ago and far away

In the Land That Made Me, Me.

In The Territory.........By Mike Karr

LAKE HAVASU CITY, from the Mojave name “blue-green water”, is a city of 53,000 residents located on the Colorado River. It started in 1963 when Robert P. McCulloch, of the Milwaukee chain saw company, envisioned starting a new community, and purchased 26 square miles of land at a public auction. In 1968, he purchased The London Bridge for $2.4 million to make it the centerpiece and by 1971 it had been dismantled, transported via the Panama Canal and reassembled in its present location. Interesting side note: McCulloch was also the developer of Fountain Hills, AZ

If you’re into hiking, RV’ing, boating, camping, ATV and OHV trail riding, this is the perfect place for you to spend a few days. You can rent boats, jet skis, jeeps, kayaks, bicycles and all types of off-road vehicles, or bring your own. It’s definitely a place for the outdoorsman with 88 miles of river, numerous RV parks and campgrounds and more desert trails than you can imagine.

Since we’re not involved in those types of activities, a week at the London Bridge Time-share Resort was a little too long for us, but everyone should spend at least a couple of days in Lake Havasu. We sampled several of the recommended eating establishments like Barley Brothers, The Red Onion, Mudshark Brewery, McDonald’s, Kokomo’s, Turtle Beach Bar and Burgers by the Bridge with the

last two being our favorites. Golf at the Island Golf Club and Olde’ London was mediocre, but Emerald Canyon in nearby Parker might be worth a trip in itself. The Havasu Landing Casino was a smoke-filled disappointment, but an hour’s trip to Laughlin and a visit to Harrah’s Casino was a highlight as we stopped to visit the donkeys in Oatman enroute.

Unless you’re the outdoorsy type, my recommendation would be to check out www.goLakeHavasu.com and make your trip there during one of their many special events such as a ballonfest, Renaissance Fair, Bluegrass Festival, boat show or rodeo. Remember, not every place “In The Territory” is the perfect vacation spot for everyone.

Lost Dutchman Marathon Water Station # 8

Under the leadership of Roy Sordi, 22 MBV members staffed Water Station #8 for the Lost Dutchman Marathon. The Station was located on Superstition Mountain Blvd. across from Basha’s. We were set up by 7:45am on Feb. 18th with water & Gatorade for the 380 runners. MBV Volunteers have staffed this station for the last 13 years. We all had a good time and it is always greatly appreciated by the runners.

TENNIS TALK

Tuesday National Mah JonggFREE LESSONS will be offered

on Tuesdays at 9:30am, beginning November 28th in the Sunset Room, led by the excellent guidance of one of our players. It’s a fun and interesting game with its own beauty and excitement, and is very popular in MountainBrook. (It’s not the same matching game you may play on your computer!) You are also welcome to come observe the game any time before the lessons begin. We play using the National Mah Jongg League card and rules. All of us who play Mah Jongg on Tuesdays invite you to join us in the Sunset Room, beginning at 9:30am. Come in the morning, the afternoon, or bring your lunch and play all day. We welcome all newcomers and any Mah Jongg player who may feel a bit rusty. We promise to make it a fun time for all. If you have any questions about the game, the lessons, or the group, please call Janie at 480-258-2336.

Tennis Talk by Betsey Baker

MBV Tennis Club is accepting used rackets and tennis balls for donation to Apache Junction High School Boys / Girls Tennis teams. They are in need of, and grateful for, the 5 rackets and many tennis balls given to date. If you have any items to contribute, contact Deb Thompson 480-223-2158. Players from MountainBrook participated in a tournament at Trilogy this month. We played 23 matches and appreciate the hard work Sally Lickar put into this enjoyable event.

Tennis Tip-Dealing with lob’s - Start taking balls out of the air that you would typically let bounce. Either as a volley, overhead or drive volley. These volleys/overheads from deeper in the court (behind the service line) are more challenging, but with practice become real weapons against the lobber. Taking balls out of the air rushes the lobber and makes them more uncomfortable. Just remember to close the net for weaker lobs/groundstrokes.

Pickleball News by Bud Morrison

The 2018 league play is complete. We had a lot of fun and spirited play in both the “A” and “B” groups.

“A” league results...Chuck Wenzel and Roger Schmittling first place. Sheldon Lessard and Mark Howard second place. “B” league results...Flight 1, Mark Heinz first. Randy Holtz second. Harley Sivertson third.

Flight 2, Steve Blikre first. Dennis Burky second. Randy Holtz third. Thanks to all who played and supported our club. We’ve purchased two new paddle queues to replace the PVC pipe. These new queues add a bit of class to our courts while eliminating the need to move paddles for “next up”. Additionally, the queues are manufactured by a 30-year army veteran. MBV was represented in several valley area tournaments last month. Our players brought home several new medals. Our two courts were cleaned and look much better. Thanks to the MBV maintenance staff. Well done gentlemen! See you on the courts!

Ladies Bible Study GroupInviting all ladies to join the Ladies’ Bible Study Group that meets

every Monday at 9 a.m. in the Palo Verde Room. We will be augmenting our study with Joanna Weaver’s companion Bible study book “Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World.” You are welcome to join us in the study of God’s Word. If you have any questions, call Eunice at 480-983-1665

DartsBy John Kloosterman

Never under estimate a beginning dart thrower. Fred Greenway played darts for about a month before leaving last summer and has been back now for 4 months. When Fred returned to darts he got a healthy beginner’s handicap. Fred’s team has won games that have come down to the wire against experienced players. He has now earned a new title as the current “Bulls Eye King” by finishing a game with 2 single bulls and a double bull. Congratulations, Fred!! And our own experienced dart player, Stan Condell, has proved himself with just three darts. Stan popped a triple 20, triple 19, and a triple 18 closing half the numbers in a game of “Dirty Cricket”. Wow! World class darts happening right here in MBV. Join us for an evening of fun. TUESDAY evenings at 6:30 pm in the Ocotillo Room. See you there!!

MountainBrook Chess ClubLove the game? Want to Learn? Please join us for friendly Chess

Pinochle ReportBarb Hofmeister

The Thursday evening group starts to gather in the Sunset Room about 6:30 and play begins at 7 p.m. If you would like to learn the game or brush up please call me at 480-288-9745 and I will meet you in the Sunset Room at 6 pm and we will have a class and practice before play starts. We are a fun and very friendly group. Last month I reported a very high score of 700 but that record was quickly surpassed by Rich Huseman and his partner Nancy Schmidt when the pair had a very rare double run hand which scores 150 points in meld alone. Rich’s score for the evening was 750 which is a record. Other high scores for the month were Bonny Nielsen (655 and 564), LaVoice Nolan (634), Ken Amundsen (605), Raquel Jones (605), Nancy Schmidt (599) and Rick Rupiper (579).

The Tuesday Ladies’ Pinochle group meets at 1:00 PM in the Sunset Center, Rm A. We are a friendly group and welcome new members. Contact Sharon Hanson at 480-415-0859 if you have any questions.

Friends of the Libraryby Nancy Bozek

The Library Worker Bees were really buzzing in January. They handled 2006 items. That included books, DVD’s, Audio books and Puzzles. Not to mention all the other duties that go along with keeping the library shipshape. Talk about a Herculean effort. It is so tempting to go througjh the return box or the donation box to take books from there before the library workers have a chance to process them. We respectfully ask that you not do that. If someone is in the library, they will be happy to process the book for you. This is the way we can determine how many times a book is checked out. One other request is this: please do not cut addresses from the magazines, just scribble them out. Cut out covers get raggedy real fast. And we always check the covers to be sure no address is visible. If you have women’s’ magazines that are not more than 3 months old, the library would love to have them. We hope you all have taken advantage of the library and continue to enjoy it. “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies.... The man who never reads lives only one life.”

Bocce BallIf you want to make new friendships,

have fun and hear laughter, then come to the Bocce Ball Courts on any Monday, Wednesday, or Friday from 9:30a.m. to 11:30a.m. You need not be experienced to play! For additional

information: Call Carol Adkins, (303) 881-4857

Book Discussionby Peggy Malsom

The April MBV Book Discussion has been cancelled due to conflicts in the schedule. At the March meeting, suggestions for the 2018-2019 line up of books to be read were considered. The final determination is not available in time for this edition of the Mountaineer. Please look for the list in the next issue in time for your summer reading pleasure. The suggestions were great, and it looks like another super year of reading for MountainBrook. Keep watching this space for updates and see you in November.

Supper ClubHave you ever make a ground chicken meatloaf? Have you ever stuffed

a chicken meatloaf with a variety of cheeses and spices? You ought to. You’ll be happy that you did. That was the entree for February’s supper club and it was delicious. The side dishes were nummy and dessert was Bananas Foster! I kid you not. If these dishes sound hard to make, I can assure you, they are not. Welcome to the new people who have joined Supper Club. We sincerely hope you are learning to enjoy the food and company of other eaters as much as we “oldies” do, because we really enjoy meeting you. If you’d like to join us just give Marcia Ritenour (480-577-5466) or Ruth Parker (253-278-2759) a call and you’ll be all set. “Food is not about impressing people, it’s about making them feel comfortable.” (Ina Garten)

MBV Pottery ClubThe mission of the MBV Pottery Club is to promote and support

MBV residents in the pursuit of artistic expression in the field of pottery. Individuals create their own works beginning with a lump of raw clay through the processes of designing, creating, drying, bisque-firing, glazing, and high-firing. Potters range in skill level from novice beginners to experienced artists. The MBV Pottery Club meets in the Fired Arts Building on Monday, Wednesday & Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Residents are welcome and encouraged to come down and check out the studio to see if pottery is for them. Introductory and advanced classes/workshops are offered on various Saturdays at a cost of $10 to cover materials. These half-day workshops are given by volunteer instructors and cover both hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques; and are open to all MBV residents. The Club also offers opportunities for field trips and studio tours of various studios/programs in the Phoenix-Mesa area. Annual membership fee to join the Club is $25.00. For more information contact John Backes at 218-573-3626 or [email protected] or stop in during club hours.

On The BallTry a ball class with us this spring. It’s fun and it’s FREE! This

class consists of toning, cardio, and some light weight training. All moves are done on the ball, under the ball, beside the ball, or just holding the ball. It’s a super fun class, choreographed to upbeat music. Students will need a mat, ball, and two sets of hand weights, one very light, and the other a little heavier. Beginners will probably need 2 three-pound weights and 2 five-pound weights. More experienced students can bring heavier weights, according to their fitness level. When purchasing a ball, remember, you should be able to sit on it just as if you are in a chair. If your knees are under your chin, the ball is too small. If you are semi standing, the ball is too large. Most balls have height charts to help you decide. Class will be held in the Ocotillo Room Thursday at 10:00, right after Pilates. Come have fun while burning calories, toning, and strengthening muscles. Any questions please call or email: Fran Strickler (317)797-9224 or [email protected].

KnittingWelcome to knitting! We are a group that meets every Tuesday

at 10am in the Mesquite Room. We welcome all levels of knitters and even people who think they might like to learn how to knit. Sometimes we have a new pattern that we are all knitting, and other times we are all working on different projects. We offer help in understanding patterns and learning new stitches. Feel free to join us any Tuesday morning, meet our knitters, and decide if the Knitters Group appeals to you. If you have any questions please call Judi at 314-435-1552.
