Indianola Garden Club NewsThe Indianola Garden club will have their annual Holiday potluck luncheon and gift exchange on December 17th.  We will meet at the clubhouse at noon with our potluck  dish to share with the group.  It can be an appetizer, main dish, salad, bread, or dessert, whatever you want to share with the group.  The hostess committee is already busily planning everything, and they would like us all to wear our festive and fun Christmas sweaters, if we so wish.  Also, they would like to know how many are actually coming, so an RSVP would be very helpful.  Remember that we will also have our fun gift exchange, and the theme is either food or garden items with a top limit of around $15.  The hostess committee for the December meeting includes Marilyn Moller, Cindy Logan, Kathy Caldwell, Darley Holmstrom, Susan Hancock and Susan Bowers. We had a good turnout for our November meeting with Bob Smaus as our speaker. We hope to have a great turnout for our holiday party.   If you have any garden club questions, call Hollace at 297-3250.

Join the IBIC Bridge ClubThe IBIC Bridge Club meets every Tuesday at 10:00 to approximately 2:00. This is a sanctioned game by the American Contract Bridge League and the game is directed by Gene Alberts. Partners will be provided and all folks are welcome to join us.

To all boat owners who store boats at Rose Marie McClung Park please temporarily relocate your boats by January 7, 2015. We have an Eagle Scout candidate who has accepted a project for the IBIC. He will be building a boat rack to store more boats in the park.

Also- if you have any interest in helping with portions of this project (unclaimed boat removal, vegetation removal, debris removal, rack construction) please contact [email protected].

Any boats not relocated by January 7 will be temporarily relocated.Thank you for your help with this exciting project!

Attracting birds to our yards during the dreary, wet months can lift our spirits. As we endure the rainy season, it is important to keep our feeding stations clean and dry to prevent disease-causing mold from forming within our feeders. Just remember that the health of the birds should be our top priority and is always worth the extra effort. The following are tips f rom the Ki tsap Audubon Society’s President Janine Schutt.- Hang your feeders in a pro-tected location such as under house eaves or a porch over-hang.

- If you hang a feeder from a pole or a tree branch, place it under a weather guard.

- Feeder Fresh is a non-toxic product that can be mixed with the seed and absorbs moisture. It can be purchased from any local wild bird supply store.

- When it is rainy and windy and fewer birds are visiting, diminish the number of feeders you hang up and fill them with just a day’s worth of seed.

- When the weather is really nasty, bring your feeders in at night to keep them dry.- Use white proso millet seed to feed native ground-feeding birds instead of cracked corn which spoils quickly when it becomes wet.- And don’t forget to refill bird baths daily with fresh water. Even when it is rainy, birds still frequently visit bird baths and

sometimes leave their droppings behind which contaminates the water.

For more tips and information about our local birds, go to kitsapaudubon.org

Got an iPad? Got an iPhone? These are wonderful devices that are lots of fun. But, only once you're comfortable with them do they become really useful tools. This three session class is designed to help everyone who has an iPad or iPhone or even an iPod Touch.

Whether you're brand new to the iPad or a struggling beginner, maybe need help with something specific, or just want to get more out your iPhone or learn about what's new in iOS8 this class is designed to help you. We'll cover all the basics; installing and using apps, s y n c h r o n i z i n g t o y o u r computer and the cloud, photography, messaging, FaceTime, and pretty much anything else you'd like to learn about.

We'll start with the basics at session one and progress from there. Each class will be different and we really suggest that you attend both 2-hour sessions. Like last year, we’ll spend part of the first session making sure students are on track with getting their device to work for them. Then

we’ll show what’s new in the world of the iPad and iPhone. In the second session we’ll break out into

groups focusing on differ-ent interests and applica-tions.

What you need to do is bring your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch fully charged and be prepared to take notes the old fashioned way. What? You don't have an iPad or iPhone yet? There's still time to ask Santa for one for Christmas. He might be able to help with that. Your gentle and under-standing instructors are Tim Celeski, Leslie Newman and other most excellent teachers. One-on-one help will be available.

To help us plan ahead add your name to the signup list at the Post Office.

This class is for beginners, intermediates and the truly gifted. There’s always much to learn and do.

There is no cost for the two session class.  But, a suggested IBIC donation of $5 per session is requested. And, maybe bring along some cookies and tea to share.

Port Update • Looking Back at a Busy Year2014 has been a very busy year for the Port. We started the process of piling replacement. We also started a deck maintenance pro-ject which will be an on-going effort. We have a solid structure for all to enjoy and it will only get better.

I see many people, both residents and visitors, on the dock every day. They marvel at our views, watch the wildlife and meet for a good talk or cup of java. It is a great place to get in some fast paced walking. Six lengths of the dock equals one mile. If you have not been out there since the completion of Phase I take a leisurely stroll and enjoy our natural beauty. The Port of Indianola thanks you for your support. Without you we would not be where we are today. 2015 looks to be a busy year as

well. We are currently formulating plans for continued upgrades to the sub-structure.

The Port Commissioners meet the third Tuesday of every month. Take a look at our Port website, www.portofindianola.com, for the exact dates. We would love to see you there and want to hear your ideas.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and Prosperous 2015,

Your Port Commissioners,Jeff Henderson, Eric Cookson & John Lane

Fundraising for the new decking for the Indianola dock is now underway. This is an excellent opportunity to complete early holiday shopping by purchasing planks for all those friends and family members who love the dock. • The decking will be replaced with untreated, locally sourced Douglas fir, affording the same life span as the pressure treated decking currently in place.

Thank You to Our FirstHonorary Plankholders!

Minutes of the IBIC Trustees Meeting, Dec. 4, 2014Trustees Present: Dennis Kilpatrick, Lisa Fitch, Catherine Freeman, Craig Jacobrown,Kathy Caldwell, Pat Hatchel, Bridget Young, Ryan Duckworth, Emily Reckord, Jackie Wood

I. President Dennis Kilpatrick called the meeting to order at 7:30.

II. The minutes of the November meeting were approved.

III. Committee Reports:• Treasurer – The IBIC budget is on track and our bank accounts healthy.• Membership - no news to report. Membership drive for 2015 will be coming up in January with a

mailer to all former members.• Merchandise –Our gross income is $12,162 and gross expenses $6,892. Inventory is low but Christmas

shopping is still possible. Madison needs volunteers to help sell on Saturday mornings. Contact her at [email protected]

• Clubhouse Rentals – There were three rentals in November netting $500, and 5 rentals scheduled in December. Contact Jackie at [email protected] for renting our facility.

• Properties –We are still working on trimming the maple tree and painting the stripes at the PO. Nagging difficulties are making these hard to get done! Discussion of our landscaping needs for next year included talking about what used to be done by volunteer work. Ryan will fix a rotten picnic table at the beach landing. There was discussion about having a simple form that property owners would fill out and sign when we do volunteer work on their property.

• Eagle Scout Project- Our scout will be starting his project of building a rack for boats at the landing in early January. People with boats/kayaks being stored there or under the dock need to remove them by January 7. Craig will be assisting the scout- work will include trimming ivy and blackberries, pruning a tree, fixing a fence in addition to building the rack.

• Security- no report. • Website – no report

IV. Old Businessa. Policies and Procedures i. Committees policy- A draft Proposed IBIC Board Policy on Committees was discussed, with a few recommendations made for improvement. The policy will be finalized for the Feb. meeting, and submitted to the Board for approval. ii. Policy voting method- Trustees discussed a proposed Three Reading method for voting for policies. The first reading is when the proposed policy is presented; second reading is the next meeting when changes can be incorporated; third reading is the following meeting when the policy is voted on. A pro for this method is that it gives us all time to think about the policy and get feedback from members; a con is that it can take up to two months to carry out. MSP.

VI. New businessa. Budget- Lisa reported on her meeting with Moe, our bookkeeper, and Dennis. Trustees are asked to pay cash if buying items for the club or getting petty cash to pay for them. Lisa walked us through the proposed budget for 2015 that incorporates a number of changes in individual line items. Trustees were asked to make sure their committees all have adequate budgets. Jackie is hoping to buy a BBQ for the clubhouse, and is hoping to work towards improvements for the interior of the clubhouse. Money was added to buy a ceiling mounted LCD projector, and the budget includes a heat pump for the post office.b. Closure of Union Bank- MSP that we start banking at Kitsap Bank due to Union Bank only having one branch on Bainbridge Island starting in February.c. Stone pathway construction request- tabled until February until more information can be gathered.d. Mutt Mitts- Catherine Freeman volunteered to take care of the Mutt Mitt boxes.

Thank You Indianola!!Thank you for sending Lila Gerrish cards for her 105th birthday. Opening the 87 cards was a treat! All the cards were thoughtfully chosen. She got handmade cards, singing cards, funny cards and many cards depicting beautiful photography and artistry. Most of the cards were from Indianola, but she got a few from Seattle and even out of state. She especially enjoyed the stories that many of you shared about your families and experiences. Thank you for making Lila’s 105th birthday so special!!!

b. Indianola Days- Will be August 1, 2015 (lowest tide)

VIII. Member comments- Sarah Runnels asked if there was any movement on having an audit done. Dennis and Lisa said after gathering some facts, we are implementing some of Don Armstrong’s recommendations, and not doing an audit.

Meeting adjourned at 9:28. Next IBIC meeting is Feb. 5, 2015.Respectfully submitted by Kathy Caldwell

Indianola Warming Station Volunteers NeededThe IBIC Warming Station needs more volunteers, who are within walking distance of the Clubhouse when driving may not be an option. Though this is our 7th year as a group of volunteers, we have only had to open the Clubhouse as a warming station once (in 2011), during a pre-Thanksgiving power outage that lasted for several days, so, as you can see, time commitment is minimal.

If you are able to help, or need more information, please contact Gael Owen (297-3738).
