Science Slam competition, won 2nd place and €200!

Lieven Machiels of the HiTemp Research group won the IOF Leuven Da

Vinci award for his research on “Zero−waste valorization of low−grade

industrial residues through metal recovery and mineral valorization in low

carbon binders and high−added value building products”.

Fei Zhang was granted “The 2015 National Award for outstanding

selffinanced Chinese students study Abroad”

Thomas Lapauw’s ‘MAX phase-based materials for nuclear

applications’ won first prize at the Heavy Liquid Metal (HLM)

summer school took place in the Belgian Nuclear Research

Centre (SCK•CEN) in Mol (13-18.06.2016)

MTM and research• Awards Jef Roos kreeg van de Vlaamse regering het Groot Ereteken

van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap.

Prof. Bikramjit Basu (MTM PhD 2001) formally received the

Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar award (announced in 2013) on

September 26, 2016 at New Delhi. This award is considered as

the highest recognition in the Indian Scientific community. He

received the award from the Science Minister of India (see

picture).

At the 34th International ICSOBA conference (3-6.10.2016, Québec,

Canada), the “Best Bauxite / Alumina Paper Award” was given to

Tobias Hertel for the paper: “Large-scale Valorization of Bauxite

Residue for Inorganic Polymers”.

The promotional video of ETN DEMETER starring Gwendolyn Bailey

was highlighted as best practice during yearly EC MSCA-ITN

coordinator day, 12.12.2016

• AwardsMartine Wevers and Els Verstrynge received the IIIAE

paper award for their outstanding and original paper on

‘Monitoring of Crack Growth in Masonry with Acoustic Emission

and Fibre Optic Sensors’ (7 December 2016, Kyoto, Japan).

• Nele Moelans received a prestigious Starting grant of 1.5

million euro from the European Research Council (ERC). She will tackle an important challenge in engineering and technology, namely to understand and

predict the microscopic evolution at material interfaces.
