To use water more efficiently, the homeowners removed 2,500 sq. ft. of lawn from the front yard of their corner lot and replaced it with drought tolerant plants.
Homeowners’ concern that it not look like “...here’s where the lawn used to be vs. other existing plant material” was solved by the design of Landscape Architect Mark Bowers (Resource Design). In addition to planting drought tolerant trees, shrubs and perennials, his design included adding berms, Sonoma field stone boulders and a
unique basalt rock birdbath. Atlas Tree, Inc. did the construction/installation.
The homeowners worked with the City of Santa Rosa to earn the maximum “Cash for Grass” rebate as well as an additional rebate for the installation of high-efficiency sprinkler nozzles and a rain sensor for the irrigation controller in the back yard.

This Junior College neighborhood garden with California native and Mediterranean plants demonstrates that a drought tolerant, low maintenance garden can be very beautiful and offer a lot of seasonal interest.
There are a variety of manzanitas, toyon, coffeeberry, buckwheats, grasses as well as a few Mediterranean plants (fruitless olive and pomegranate). The picket fence is lined with Rosa ‘Sally Holmes’ to echo the other plantings in the neighborhood.
A flagstone pathway runs through the garden using flagstones that were repurposed when the main walkway was remade. The garden was prepared using sheet mulching to kill the old grass and weeds and help prepare the soil for planting.

This residential garden was installed in 2005 and includes California natives, Mediterranean perennials, vegetable beds, and a removed lawn. No pesticides or herbicides are used on the landscape. Other environmentally friendly aspects of this garden include composting, vermiculture (worm compost), a 3,300-gallon rain water catchment system (with filtration to potable water standards), and a graywater (laundry-to-landscape) system (both permitted). This landscape offers excellent wildlife habitat.

A 660-gallon rainwater catchment system was installed in March 2014. In spring 2013 a laundry-to-landscape graywater system was installed that waters dwarf cherry trees, blueberry bushes, elderberry bushes, and other plants. The front yard garden is watered with drip irrigation from the rainwater system. Part of the garden is evolving into edible perennials, with areas outside the garden (and not on irrigation) planted with drought tolerant species.

Over the past decade, the owners have gradually transformed a thirsty front lawn and parched Petaluma adobe backyard into a food-producing, eco-friendly homestead. Now, thanks to the many individuals who’ve shared this house with the owners over time, (including a landscaper, artists, photographers, musicians, psychiatrist, naturopathic doctor, biomimicry specialist and two Daily Actors), 841 Western Ave has a beautiful backyard permaculture garden with raised beds, hugelkultur mounds, fledgling fruit trees, and more to come.

Following a Daily Acts workshop, Chuck and Elaine Newman installed a laundry-to-landscape graywater system to provide irrigation to the backyard. In 2013 the Newman’s added a second graywater system to provide irrigation to the front yard. The new system is a permitted system to divert water from the shower. Installation of the landscape in the front yard was achieved with the help about 40 members of the community, coordinated by Daily Acts.

After becoming a volunteer with Daily Acts in 2012, Judy determined to make their property even more water-wise and to increase food production. That year the Mazzeos transformed the front yard into an edible garden irrigated with a combination of graywater and potable water using in-line drip. The front downspouts were also routed directly to the graywater mulch basins to reduce runoff and provide additional irrigation. The front yard includes six fledgling fruit trees, a raspberry patch, herbs, and seasonal crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and beans.

22000 Burndale is a groundbreaking demonstration site of an imperative symbiosis of luxury and environmental literacy. The property has the first permitted graywater system in Sonoma Valley. This beautiful, productive, and sustainable garden resides on an operational vineyard and is a showcase of cutting edge conservation technologies and dynamic plant communities. The site features: an ultra high-efficiency satellite controlled irrigation system; 3,800 square foot sub-surface drip irrigated lawn; whole house graywater irrigation system; rainwater catchment earthworks; and over 100 different
varieties of edible, medicinal, insectary, native habitat and dynamic accumulator plants. The site also includes a sustainably managed vineyard of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes, as well an emerging market garden to grow non-GMO organic fruits and vegetables. The property’s hardscaping features historical reclaimed and recycled materials and lumber from forests certified to a third-party forest standard. The property is powered by solar. While still in its infancy with barely 6 months in the ground, this garden is a local model for a new era of green consciousness.

St. Clare’s Garden is an excellent example of a lawn conversion. This drought tolerant garden with large heritage Oaks features California native and Mediterranean plants with a patio of decomposed granite. The garden is low maintenance and has very low water use to protect the roots of the Oak trees. Located at St. Francis Episcopal Church, it provides an inviting space for outdoor services in the summer, including weddings. The garden is next to a playground and pre-school and was designed with children in mind.

This garden was designed and planted to enhance the habitat value of the 2-acre oak woodland property. A front border is open to deer and other wildlife. Flowers and larval host plants for butterflies attract lots of insects. Nesting boxes are hung throughout the property; almost a dozen different species of birds breed here every year. Cascading ponds attract even more life, and dry-stacked stone walls provide overwintering sites for reptiles and amphibians. Areas under the oaks are planted with natives that have established without irrigation.

The traditional front and backyard landscaping of this lagoon-side residence have been completely transformed into a serene, modern, eco-friendly environment. The water thirsty lawn in the front and back areas of the garden were removed and replaced with drought tolerant plants that include California natives, succulents and other low-water, Mediterranean plantings. Plants were chosen that provide year-round appeal and can stand up to the waterside elements.
The backyard landscape features a new Cumaru deck with built-in benches and modern planters. A raised garden bed for edibles was constructed with recycled wood from the old deck. The front landscape was updated with modern concrete pavers, a new driveway design and a variety of low water use plants to replace the lawn.
Drip irrigation was installed throughout to conserve water and decorative black grape seed compost was applied as a mulch.
