CWL ANNUAL CONFERENCEMAY 4, 2018

SAN FRANCISCO, CA

THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS MESSAGE FROM THE CWL PRESIDENTWelcome to California Women Lawyers’ 2018 Annual Conference. Thank you for joining us!

If this is your first CWL event, I hope you feel welcome and comfortable among a group who genuinely want to get to know you and to help you succeed on your path.

For our returning participants, I hope that your day is a re-energizing reminder of why you’re a part of CWL and a chance to re-connect with friends from across the state.

The Conference theme “Inspiration, Achievement, and Recognition - Rise by Lifting Others” is an important one. In an industry known for being adversarial, we are reminded today that success doesn’t have to be at someone else’s expense. A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle. That is what CWL is all about. We provide a support system for members across the state and help each other succeed so that we can advance women in the profession of law and improve the administration of justice.

Throughout the day we will have dual tracks of MCLE presentations. You are welcome to attend any presentation you like. From running for office, to learning about sexual harassment in the #metoo era, to women supporting women, to building your online brand, today’s panels have so much to offer. I hope you enjoy learning and growing with us as we explore these timely topics.

When the learning is over, the fun begins at a networking reception where we will celebrate one of the women on whose shoulders we stand; CWL 2005-2006 Past President Pearl Gondrella Mann, our 2018 Judith Soley Lawyer as Citizen honoree. Pearl has been called the Orange County Bar Association’s “Ambassador of Kindness” and hailed as a shining example of an attorney committed to giving back to their community. CWL is proud to honor her as a leader, role model and mentor who embodies the elements of being an excellent, civil and honorable lawyer.

I would be remiss if I did not thank all the very special people who make today possible:

Thank you to the Annual Conference Co-Chairs Jessica Rowe, Ariel Brownell Lee and Wendy Krog who worked tirelessly to put this event together.

Thank you to our Morning Speaker Beth Mora and Lunch Keynote Speaker Jan Kang, Chief Legal Officer of Chronicle and founder of the Women’s General Counsel Network, and our many panel moderators and panelists for sharing your time and wisdom with us.

Thank you to our board members and association management company, SMA, for your time and effort in supporting this event. Your hard work and commitment always awe me.

Thank you to our Annual and Event sponsors who made today possible. Your generosity demonstrates your commitment to the advancement of women in the profession and society and helps bring our mission to life.

Finally, thank you for attending. I’m glad you’re here and I hope we get to connect.

As you enjoy your experience today, please share it with others on social media using #CWLAC18 and #SheroesInAction. We can’t wait to see the great photos!

Sincerely,

Renee N. Galente2018 CWL PresidentGalente Law, APC

From C-Suite to Boardroom: What You Can Do Today to Become a Board MemberMarina Room(1.25 Elim. of Bias MCLE)The process of becoming a director seems mysterious to many professionals. Many imagine that an invisible hand takes a few select professionals and gives them a corporate board seat. This, of course, is a myth. The reality is much more intentional than magical. In fact, clear intention, educated choices, coherent strategy, time investment, and flawless execution are all you need to eventually make your director dream a reality. This session will address five questions that most professionals have in the beginning of their journey have:1. What does the board of directors do?2. What type of board opportunities exist?3. Why serve on a corporate board of directors?4. How to get a position on a corporate board of directors?5. How to build great relationships that can lead to a corporate board of directors seat?

Thank you all for being here at our 2018 Annual Conference. This year our theme is “Inspiration, Achievement, and Recognition – Rise by Lifting Others.” Many of us are surprised when we learn that our actions have inspired someone to reach for something for themselves. Many of us have faced that all-too paralyzing “imposter syndrome.” Not today. Not this year. Not moving forward. In this conference, our goal for each of you is to not only take inspiration from our distinguished group of panelists and speakers, but to see how amazing you are, and to realize how much you have to offer others. Inspiration and growth can begin from seemingly insignificant circumstances to the most remarkable scenarios; it is just within each of us to recognize and share it. We would like to say a huge Thank You to all of our generous sponsors. Thank you also to our moderators, our panel leaders, and our amazing panelists. Thank you to Jan Kang and Beth Mora, for your inspiring words. Thank you to our Annual Conference Committee, specifically Suzette Torres who is a Rock Star! You are all inspiring, and we thank you so much for attending our conference. -Jessica Rowe, Wendy Krog, and Ariel Brownell Lee - 2018 Annual Conference Co-chairs.
