STAY

I recently viewed Andy Stanley's message, Fix Your Eyes, based on Hebrews 11. Intently engaging his audience he said,

“All of you who are 45 and older, look up here.

Many of you have grown weary and lost heart and the reasonis–you have fixed your eyes on a political system… and you are

growing weary. And you need to knock it off. And I’ll tell youwhy… because you are scaring the children!”

At this stage in my life I have experienced many elections and Imust agree with Andy, if you are attentively watching the politi-cal ads and debates you are going to become anxious and dis-couraged. Can you relate?

More importantly, what really caught my attention was his state-ment to quit being wearyand faint of heart ... "be-cause you are scaring thechildren!" In other words, when we lose heart and be-come weary we are bearinga weak testimony to thosearound us. We are causingour children to abandontheir faith in God as well.

I love the eleventh chapterof Hebrews. My NAS Bibletitled the chapter the Tri-umphs of Faith. Take a mo-ment and read about ourpredecessors in faith. Whatyou see is that regardless of the world falling apart aroundthem, these men and women didn't succumb to weary heart-lessness.

· Regardless of never seeing rain, in faith Noah built aship on dry land and saved his family and the animals.

· Regardless of not knowing where he was going, Ab-raham gathered his family and journeyed in faith underGod's direction to an unknown destination.

· Regardless of having only one son, Abraham in obe-dience lifted his knife to sacrifice his only son Isaacand God provided a ram in the thickets!

· Regardless of her age Sarah, as an old woman, borea son.

· Regardless of the risk of being caught, Rehab hid theJewish spies and kept them safe.

· Regardless of the size of Goliath, David selectedthree little stones and hurled one in faith! That's all ittook!

· Regardless of being threatened Peter and Johncould not be kept quiet about Jesus.

· Regardless of being imprisoned Paul and Silasprayed and sang in faith and their chains fell offand the cell door opened and most important of allthe jailer and his family got saved!

· Regardless of the grave wrappings Lazarus cameforth at Christ bidding.

· Regardless of Christ being nailed to a cross, placed in a borrowed tomb, wrapped in a burialcloth, a huge rock placed in front, with guardswatching the door...and STILL Jesus came aliveand got out! And He is coming again!

Can you just imagine how thefaith of the children and grand-children of these men and wom-en grew as they heard thesestories? Can't you see theirfaith bolstering as they passedon these testimonies to theirchildren?

Our world has become restlessand unsettled and the dailynews is disheartening, but wefix our eyes on Jesus who is incomplete control of it all.

"Fixing our eyes on Jesus, theauthor and perfecter of faith,

who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despisingthe shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throneof God." Hebrews 12: 2 NASB

We don't have to understand or like what's happeningaround us, but we do have to keep our eyes on the perfect-er of our faith, Jesus Christ the living Son of God. We mustnot become faint hearted and cause our children to stum-ble. We must live as a people of faith and hope knowingthat God will take care of us. To despair is to distrust God'sability to care for us and finish His great work in us.

"And all these, having gained approval through their faith, did not receive what was promised, because God had pro-vided something better for us, so that apart from us theyshould not be made perfect." Hebrews 11: 39-40 NASB

Don't scare your children by worrying about the worldaround you, but give them a strong testimony of faith as youstand firm in difficult days declaring the truth of God andtrusting that He is in charge of everything including yourself.

Much Love,Dennis

Appreciating Your PastorNot Just This Month but All Year

When I served on staff in a church in Arkansas, I had the joy of coordi-nating events for our senior adults. On one of our first outings, I usedthe traveling time to get to know some of the saints. As I chatted withone particular lady named Brenda, I asked her about her service in ourchurch and what she specifically enjoyed doing. I’ll never forget hersmile and genuine heartfelt words, “I just want to be a blessing to mypastor.” I was a little stunned. Growing up in a pastor’s home, and thenserving on staff at churches, too often I had experienced the oppositeattitude: “I just want to be a thorn in my pastor’s side.” So Brenda’swords were like a fresh breeze. And she backed them up. She trulywas a blessing to our pastor, and to all of us on staff.

I wonder how different a pastor’s ministry would be if every memberhad Brenda’s attitude? Perhaps it is your heart to be a blessing to yourpastor, but you’re wondering how you can do that. Here are a few tips:

Be a prayer warrior for your pastor.

Perhaps the best way to bless your pastor is to intercede for him. Butdon’t just throw random “Bless our pastor” prayers toward heaven.Instead…

Pray specifically. Ask your pastor how you can pray for him and hisfamily. Write down his requests. Then follow up.

Pray intentionally. Too often we say we’ll pray for someone, then nev-er get around to it. If you tell him you’re going to pray for him, then prayfor him. Mark it down. Set a time. You might do this daily, but at leastweekly.

Pray holistically. You may lean toward praying for the seen needs ofyour pastor and his family – their health, safety, schedules, physicalneeds, etc. But I encourage you to also battle in prayer for the spiritualneeds of your pastor – that he would hear clearly from God, have clearvision for the church, be diligent in preparation and bold in preaching, and so forth.

One more note about praying for your pastor: When you’re praying for him,it’s hard to be critical of him. Praying for someone keeps our heart tendertoward that person and helps us see them through the eyes of Christ.

Show your appreciation.

There are ways you need to tangibly encourage your pastor and showhim your appreciation.

Write it. Appropriate texts and emails are great ways to communicateyour appreciation. But I encourage you to put pen to paper and writehim a note. A handwritten note speaks deeply. I personally have a cou-

Appreciating Your PastorNot Just This Month but All Year

ple of files full of encouraging notes that people sent to meduring my years as pastor. Many times those notes came atjust the right time – in a stressful time of ministry, a difficulttime in my personal life, or a troubling time in my family. Manytimes they followed a time of harsh criticism. Refresh his heartwith a note.

Give it. What are some appropriate gifts for your pastor?

● gift cards

● tickets to sporting events or the arts

● free baby-sitting

● treat he and his family to lunch out or a meal in yourhome

● a sack of groceries or vegetables from your garden

● Speak it. What are some words you’re pastor wouldlove to hear? How about… thank you, we love you, weappreciate you, we’re praying for you, what can I do tohelp, and more. Verbalize your appreciation.

● Love his spouse well.

One of the most meaningful things you can do to be a bless-ing to your pastor is love and encourage his wife. How?

Don’t put unreal expectations on her. Not all pastors’ wivescan play piano, sing, or teach … but all are gifted. So…

Affirm her gifts. Allow her to thrive in the places she’s calledto. Encourage her in this.

Don’t hold her at arms length. Be a friend. Invite her to lunch.Discover her needs and pressure points and help find ways tomeet those needs.

Watch your words.

You have the opportunity to speak life or death over your pas-tor and his ministry. Choose life.

Don’t be an originator or channel of criticism, gossip, or slan-der about your pastor. Just don’t. Nothing good comes of it.

Squash the harsh words that you do hear. If you hear some-one criticizing or gossiping about the pastor, ask if they havediscussed this with him, and if not, encourage them to stoptalking about it until they do.

Talk to him. Pastors aren’t perfect. There will be times youdisagree with him and need to share your heart in a seriousconversation. Please do so. Just do it in the right spirit, withthe right words, at the right time. Shouting at him during apublic business meeting is not it. Neither is pulling him asidebetween Sunday School and worship. Set up an appointmentand go visit with him.

Most pastors are God-called, Spirit-led, men of integrity wholove Christ and love the church. They bear a tremendousweight in leading God’s people on His mission. Come along-side him in this effort. Love him, encourage him, and be ablessing!

Do you consistently seek God in the word and prayer? Orhave you tried again and again, become discouraged, andgiven up? We are deep enough into January that this is thestory for many us. Resolutions have began to stall. And evenif you do get time with God, is it life-giving? Or is it just goingthrough the motions, reading an assigned passage, prayingthrough your list, and being relieved when it’s over?

It's not too late to make some good changes. So if you arestruggling to spend time with God, here are five promises thatcan help:

1. God Is My Exceeding JoySend out your light and your truth; let them lead me …Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceedingjoy. (Psalm 43:3–4)

God promises to be your exceeding joy, not because of whathe gives, but because of who he is. When we behold andworship him we have infinitely more joy than we have in any-thing else.

So why would we rather sleep in than seek God? It’s becausewe’re not trusting that God is our exceeding joy. So what can wedo?

Don’t just grit your teeth and try harder. Do what the psalmistsays — ask God to send you his light (the heart-enlighteningwork of the Spirit) and his truth (the Word of God). Then prayover promises describing God as your joy, like Psalm 43:3–4;Psalm 16:11; Matthew 13:44; and 1 Peter 1:8.

As you do, God will send his light and truth so you see andfeel that he really is your exceeding joy. Then, when you seethat infinite joy is found in him, you’ll want to spend time withhim.

2. Hearing God’s Word Will Increase My FaithSo faith comes from hearing, and hearing through theword of Christ. (Romans 10:17)

Many mornings I’m tempted not to seek God because myfaith feels weak. But that’s like not going to the doctor be-cause my body feels sick. Just like doctors heal sick bodies,so God strengthens weak faith, as we hear his word.

Weak faith is like a weak battery. But God’s word is a batterycharger. So when your faith is weak, open his word, and plugin your weak faith. God promises that as you do that, he willrecharge you.

Five Promises for Your BibleReading and Prayer

3. God’s Word Is the Only Perfect Source of GuidanceYour word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. (Psalm119:105)

The world is like a pitch-black cave in which we can’t see anything. But God has given us the high-powered flashlight of his word.

So if we head into our day without pondering God’s word, it’s likestumbling through a cave without turning on the flashlight.

But starting the day in God’s Word is like turning on the flashlight,so we can see the crevice to avoid, the rock to duck under, theturn we want to take. Don't head into your day without turning onthe flashlight.

4. When You Pray, God Will AnswerAsk, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find;knock, and it will be opened to you. (Matthew 7:7)

One reason we don’t pray is because we believe Satan’s lie thatprayer does nothing. But that’s not what Jesus taught (Matt. 7:7).

Jesus promises that every time we pray, God will answer. He willeither do exactly what we ask, or something even better, whichhe would not have done had we not prayed.

So if I start the day praying about my heart, marriage, children, work, and ministry, then God will do things in my heart, marriage, children, work, and ministry that he would not have done had Inot prayed. Trust Jesus’ promise about prayer — and pray.

5. This Is the One Thing Which Will Not Be Taken Away“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about manythings, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen thegood portion, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke10:41–42)

Martha had busied herself in the kitchen, while Mary sat at Je-sus’s feet, listening to his word. And Jesus said Mary had madethe right choice, because she had chosen the one thing whichcould not be taken from her.

Everything else can be taken from you. But time with Jesus willnever be taken from you, because the heart you nurture for Jesusnow will bring you increased joy in him forever. And ever. Andever.

So if you haven’t spent time with God, and you are tempted withthe newspaper, Facebook, or a phone call, stop. Ask yourself:what will bring me joy that will never be taken away?

Then set everything else aside to join Mary at Jesus’s feet, listen-ing to his word.Tomorrow MorningThe alarm goes off.I’m tired. Maybe just a little more sleep. But wait. . .God is inviting me to exceeding joy.His word will strengthen my weak faith. His word will shine light on the darkness around me.When I pray, God will work. This is the one thing that can’t be taken from me.I think I’ll get up.

Before I became a pastor, I heard people in ministry joke abouthow they wanted to quit almost every Monday. I laughed, butdidn’t really understand. I then became a pastor and the light bulbcame on. Or should I say the reality set in. We have seen in re-cent days ministers who have quit or are no longer serving inministry because of burnout, emotional pain, moral failures, andalcoholism to just name a few. The list could go on. The realityhurts even more.

What do you do when those moments come andyou’re ready to throw in the towel? It may soundlike the following statements. I know becauseI’ve been there.

“I’m not cut out for this.”

“I’m exhausted and don’t have anything left togive.”

“No one really understands what I’m goingthrough.”

Here are five reasons to keep going when youwant to quit:

1. You are doing better than you think youare.

Your emotions will lie to you. We are meant todoubt our doubts and feed our faith. The enemy will lie to you. He’ll whisper you aren’t making a difference. No one notices. Godnotices! You were His child before you became His minister. Heknows what you are going through.

When King David was discouraged, He found strength in the Lord(1 Samuel 30:6). He stopped looking outward and looked up-ward. He remembered who he was, but more importantly whoGod was. Never forget who you are in Him.

2. You are further along than you think you are.

I’ve heard over the years to enjoy the journey because the desti-nation is a mirage. Church planting has made us face that realitytime and time again. Though you aren’t where you want to be.Thank God you aren’t where you were.

Thank God for what He has carried you through. If you don’t haveone already, start a gratitude journal. This has made the singlegreatest difference in my life the last several months. I make my-self write in it every day. Even the days I don’t want to do it! Itchanges my heart and reminds me of what God has done.

3. God is doing more than you currently see.

Our world loves to glorify finished products. God is in the busi-ness of magnifying a work in progress. Don’t let what’s wrongwith the circumstances around you keep you from worshiping theGod who is alive within you. He is doing more than you can see.His current work in you is His preparation for what He is about todo through you. God is always doing more than you can see!

4. There are people in your community that need what youhave.

It’s why you entered ministry in the first place. To reach thosewho haven’t been reached. To see one more life changed byChrist. When we are hurting or discouraged, we forget this. It’snot that we don’t care. We just tend to get lost in the details.

We will lose our WAY when we lose our WHY. Remind yourselfof your first love (Revelation 2:4-5). Remind yourself why you en-tered ministry in the first place. You are where you are becausepeople around you need what you have.

5. Stop carrying the burden. Share the burden.

It’s not the burden that will crush you. It’s how youcarry it that will make all the difference. Jesus said,“My yoke is easy and the burden I give you is light”(Matthew 11:28-30). That doesn’t sound like what Icarry most days.

We aren’t meant to carry our burdens, but to shareour burdens with others (Galatians 6:2).

As pastors, we must be there for each other. Let apastor friend know today if you need the encour-agement from others who have been there, donethat, and have the scars to prove it.

Hebrews 10:35-36 says, “So do not throw awayyour confidence; it will be richly rewarded. Youneed to persevere so that when you have done thewill of God, you will receive what he has promised.”

Don’t give up. Don’t give in. The resistance is oftenthe fiercest right before the breakthrough.
