Annual Bethany Mass

The annual parish Bethany Mass & Blessing of the Columbarium will be celebrated on All Soul's Day:

NEXT Saturday 2nd November 2019, 9.30 am

in St Bernard’s Church, Upper Mt Gravatt

This celebration of new life has become very significant to bereaved families.

Parishioners and families who have lost a loved one during the year receive a special invitation.

However, all other parishioners who wish to attend, are most welcome and

asked to bring a plate for morning tea following the Mass and blessing.

God, be merciful to me.

God offers salvation to us; it is a free and total gift of love. It is not something we earn or deserve. It is a gift. In today’s parable, one person realises this. It is the social outcast, the tax collector who knows he needs God, and asks for God’s mercy. The religious person has no need of God; he is striving for righteousness through his own efforts.

The Pharisee exemplifies an early heresy in the Church put forward by a man called Pelagius. Like the Pharisee in this parable, Pelagius placed great importance on do-ing good deeds and thereby being right before God. The Church condemned his teaching as false, for this attitude does away with the need for God and for God’s offer of Salvation in Jesus. We don’t save ourselves. No amount of Masses, Rosar-ies, Novenas or indulgences can achieve Salvation for us. My students then ask, ‘Well, why do these things?’ When someone gives us something wonderful, far be-yond our hopes and dreams, the usual response is one of deep gratitude. When I hand out tickets to heaven, the recipients automatically say ‘Thank you’. This is why we pray, and act generously; our entire life is living out ‘Thank you’ to the God who has given us the gift of Jesus for our Salvation.

Today we come to the end of this Letter to Timothy. As we read or listen to it, keep in mind Paul, a real person, imprisoned in Rome knowing that his time is coming to an end. What would our reflections be in his situation? From Paul we get no sense of fear or despair. On the contrary his words affirm a life spent, poured out, for God – either as a Pharisee, or as a Christian evangelist. His words remind me of the words of Simeon, ‘Now Lord, you may dismiss your servant in peace.’ (Luke 2:29) The sense I have is that Paul knows that he has lived his life to the full; he has recognised the gift he was given, and willingly travelled across Turkey and Greece to share his faith with others. Plenary 2020

Missionary & Evangelising

This National Theme for Discernment is inspired by the voices of the People of God who shared a passion for participating in the missionary nature

of the Church and desire stronger support, involvement and formation among all the baptised who make up the Church. The data also identified the need to reach out and communicate more effectively and to find new ways of living and proclaiming the Gospel in Australia today. There was a call for the strengthening of leadership and ministries in parishes and schools, training to equip leaders for ministry, pastoral support for various groups within parish and faith communities, and a desire for a unified voice in engaging social is-sues such as life and religious freedom. If we don’t have a say, we can’t complain about the outcome of Plenary 2020.

Let’s keep the momentum going! Please join us.

Lord, we come to your table; Lord, we hear your word.

WHERE TWO OR THREE Text & Music: Michael Herry fms © 2008 Where two or three are gathered in my name, Know I am with you, I am with you! Where two or three are gathered in my name, Know I am there to be with you.

SONG OF PRAISE: COME AS YOU ARE

Text & Music: Diedre Brown ibvm© Melbourne Australia

1. Come as you are, that's how I want you. Come as you are, feel quite at home. Close to my heart, loved and forgiven; Come as you are, why stand alone?

2. No need to fear, love sets no limits. No need to fear, love never ends. Don't run away shamed and disheartened. Rest in my love, trust me again.

3. I came to call sinners, not just the virtuous. I came to bring peace, not to condemn. Each time you fail to live by my promise,

Why do you think I'd love you the less?

4. Come as you are, that's how I love you. Come as you are, trust me again. Nothing can change the love that I bear you. All will be well, just come as you are.

RECESSIONAL: BLEST BE THE LORD

Text: Psalm 91; Text & Music: Daniek L Schutte ©1976, New Dawn Music,

PortlAnd Or.

Refrain: Blest be the Lord, blest be the Lord. The God of mercy, the God who saves. I shall not fear, the dark of night, nor the arrow that flies by day.

1. He will release me from the nets of all my foes. He will protect me from their wicked hands.

Beneath the shadow of His wings I will rejoice To find a dwelling place secure.

2. I need not shrink before the terrors of the night, Nor stand alone before the light of day. No harm shall come to me, no arrow strike me down, No evil settle in my soul.

3 Although a thousand strong have fallen at my side, I'll not be shaken with the Lord at hand. His faithful love is all the armor that I need

To wage my battle with the foe.
