Education is foundational to Sunnybrook’s core mission: inventing the future of health care. At an academic health sciences centre like Sunnybrook, not everyone conducts research, but everyone is a teacher and a learner. Being an outstanding learning organization is one of the main reasons why Sunnybrook is one of the top employers in Canada. We are proud to be the destination for 4,015 learners from approximately 25 health disciplines. Our aspirational vision is to become the destination of choice, a magnet, for all health professional learners in Toronto. To achieve this vision, our primary goal is to lead in innovative methods of teaching and learning.

We have already had some success. Since 2014, we have embarked on an ambitious two-year plan to enhance the presence and profile of education at Sunnybrook.

In order to work more effectively and more synergistically across our three campuses, Sunnybrook education has become organized into four committees that reflect our priorities: Education Research Unit; Technology-Enhanced Teaching and Learning; Education Capacity Building; and Education Excellence and Wellbeing.

The Education Research Unit has championed education research at Sunnybrook and is working closely with Sunnybrook’s Practice-Based Research and Innovation Team. This past year we awarded approximately $60,000 in education research seed grant funding and launched an education research rounds for the hospital.

Our Sunnybrook Canadian Simulation Centre—the first in Canada—has developed unique curricula in high-fidelity and in situ simulation, and trains more learners than ever before. Over the next year, our centre will develop novel curricula that will directly engage patients and families to provide feedback to medical students about their communication skills.

Our Learning Management System myEducation provides staff easy access to learning opportunities and comprehensive management of education records. Since being rolled out in 2012, myEducation has massively expanded to include 7,000 learners.

We have built capacity in several ways. Through our partnership with Organizational Development and Leadership, we have strengthened our support for employees, physicians and volunteers through professional development and leadership training.

Finally, we emphasize excellence in teaching and creating a culture of caring. With the support of our Senior Leadership Team and Sunnybrook Foundation, we are embarking on a two-year $7-million renovation to enhance

our physical learning environment. Next year we will purchase and deploy an online student registration system to enhance the learner experience and move us closer to our goal of creating an interprofessional student centre.

Ultimately, the soul of education is our teachers. I would like to thank all of our teachers, supervisors, preceptors, instructors and staff who educate our learners, patients and families. Without your passion and dedication Sunnybrook could not be the world-renowned academic health sciences centre that it is.

I have mentioned only a few of our exciting recent developments. I encourage you to learn more by reading this report and visiting www.sunnybrook.ca/education. If you have any questions, I welcome them at [email protected].

SIMULATION

The Sunnybrook Canadian Simulation Centre—the first such in Canada, and one of only 10 accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada—underwent its first significant expansion and opened the Sunnybrook Simulation Skills Centre on Sept. 6, 2013.

As technology plays a steadily increasing role in the practice of health care and required skills become much more demanding, the educational environment has to adapt. We responded by establishing the Sunnybrook Simulation Skills Centre as a program for safe, reproducible and measurable practice.

Our new accredited educational space allows students, staff, physicians and researchers to practise skills in a realistic environment toward improving patient safety, quality of care and emergency preparedness.

The Simulation Centre Skills Program offers high-fidelity, technology-enabled training in many areas, ranging from minimally invasive surgery to psychiatry. This is paramount in our continued role as educational and clinical leaders within the University of Toronto, provincially, nationally and internationally.

The acquisition of new and advanced synthetic materials and simulation equipment will allow us to expand our program and increase learning opportunities for users. Our new programs will promote error reduction through skill acquisition, practice and impact measurement.

The last two years have seen several notable achievements, which are highlighted on the following page.

In Situ Simulation Program Ebola Strike Team

TORSO Technology Conference for

General Surgeons

In February 2014, the Simulation Skills Centre hosted the first TORSO Technology Conference for General Surgeons from across Ontario. Participants completed a full-day, accredited, interactive workshop using technology-enabled simulation to learn a novel approach for minimally invasive colon cancer surgery.

In December 2014, our simulation activities expanded beyond the physical boundaries of the centre, bringing simulation to where it matters most through the In Situ Simulation Program. Staff brought simulation to the operating room, where the cardiac surgery team could manage a simulated critical event in a “real-life” setting.

In 2014 and 2015, the Ebola Strike Team underwent intense preparation for possible encounters with Ebola as the crisis rapidly evolved. Along with the Sunnybrook Patient Safety Department, we created an interprofessional educational protocol, which 54 staff completed. Our ability to initiate a learning program on an emergency basis was recognized by government and disseminated widely.

LIBRARY SERVICES

St. John’s Rehab staff library, which is located at the St. John’s campus, opened as a virtual library on April 7, 2015. This is the first library within the Toronto Academic Health Science Network (TAHSN) to offer solely virtual services, thereby enabling 24/7 access with a simple swipe of a card.

The virtual library service provides seamless access to essential electronic resources, including premium databases. In addition to modern resources, the virtual library offers flexible hours, semi-private study carrels, computer workstations, a direct telephone line to the Sunnybrook library help desk and on-demand video-conferencing support.

We will conduct a needs assessment to understand the usage behaviour of the new model of library services. This survey of St. John’s Rehab staff will also identify initiatives to improve the services and facilities further.

Additional achievements include further reducing print archives and adopting more electronic resources, toward our ongoing goal of delivering the most up-to-date technology-enhanced education. It will also enhance the physical footprint for independent study and collaboration in the upcoming library space reconfiguration project.

Adoption of new, alternative clinical research tools resulted in an annual savings of $80,000 for library operations.

LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Organizational Development and Leadership has a unique partnership with the Sunnybrook Medical Education Office in enabling the enhancement for the Learning Management System (LMS).

The LMS administrators developed a process that gives Sunnybrook staff physicians 24/7 access to myEducation.

myEducation provides all Sunnybrook staff with 24/7 access to an expanding catalogue of mandatory, accredited and special-interest learning content. All staff physicians have access to the LMS to comply with mandated training. New online curricula have also been developed in partnership with mdBriefCase, the largest provider of accredited online medical education in Canada.

Since being rolled out for the Department of Nursing in 2012, myEducation has massively expanded to include all Sunnybrook health professionals, including

physicians, and now reaches 7,000 learners. Now that we have successfully connected our staff physicians to myEducation, our aim is to partner with Medical Education to expand access to medical students and fellows.

eLearning Alliance of Canadian HospitalsThe eLearning Alliance of Canadian Hospitals (eACH) Committee is an executive planning committee that started as a small group of eLearning professionals from teaching hospitals in Toronto who got together to purchase a shared LMS system and pool their expertise. It meets monthly to discuss issues around course development, LMS implementation and incorporating eLearning into hospital culture.

The committee, co-chaired by Christopher Townsend of Sunnybrook, has also planned the eACH conference for the past six years. eACH membership includes eLearning professionals from the hospitals shown below.

2015 Annual Education Report • 13

education capacity building One of the most effective ways to influence the patient experience and clinical outcomes is to teach patients and families effectively. More than 60% of Canadians have low health literacy, which affects hospitalization and chronic disease management, and increases the cost to the health care system. By understanding how to mitigate low health literacy, staff and physicians can adapt how and what they teach to make it stick, which will have a positive impact on outcomes.

To this end, Sunnybrook has developed and implemented a health literacy competencies curriculum to ensure best practice teaching to patients and families.

The Patient and Family Education team has facilitated the training of a group of patient education champions, including clinical educators, organization development associates, and members of the Patient and Family Education Committee, to deliver health literacy workshops across the organization. This training provides staff and physicians with knowledge and strategies to mitigate low health literacy with the goal of engaging patients in illness understanding, treatment management, decision-making and safety.

CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT/EDUCATION

In December 2014 we launched two policies related to Continuing Professional Development/Education (CPD/E) for all 10,000 staff learners at Sunnybrook. These policies have received significant attention from peer hospitals for their inclusiveness and comprehensive approach.

Supporting Life-Long Learning

The aim of this policy is to ensure a transparent, consistent, values-based approach to support all Sunnybrook learners engaged in CPD/E, and to enable continued competency and accountability of staff. It is Sunnybrook’s expectation that all learners and managers will follow this policy for the mutual benefit of the institution, staff learners, and patients and families. The policy outlines key accountabilities, procedures and guidelines for decision-making.

Professional Staff Paid Education Leave This policy recognizes that certain professional groups have legislated requirements for continuing education. Paid education allowances are outlined within this policy for staff members who are required to maintain professional designations or credentials through legislated continuing professional development.

We will analyze the operational aspects of the policies, as well as their usage. This latter activity will help us evaluate return on investment for supporting CPD/E in terms of patient outcomes, satisfaction, retention, recruitment and organizational learning.

Results from a pre-policy survey conducted in September 2011, some of which are shown below, informed the development of policies and will be used as a comparator for effectiveness.

EDUCATOR DEVELOPMENT

We introduced three inter-related projects to support our hospital’s ongoing commitment to develop those who have educational accountability to both students and Sunnybrook staff.

We launched a Learn to Teach Educator Resources Portal to provide ongoing evidence-based information to our educators about the

processes of education and learning, anytime and anywhere.

We registered 30 applicants to earn training and development certification from the Canadian Society

for Training and Development (CSTD), now called The Institute for Performance and Learning.

We piloted five workshops for staff who want to enhance their formal or informal teaching and education practice.

How SUNNYBROOK EDUCATION Is Making A DIFFERENCE

This project is focused around our unique partnership with Organizational Development and Leadership and the CSTD. We were one of the first health sciences centres in Canada to partner with the CSTD and we are the first TAHSN hospital to adopt the CSTD learning and development competencies framework. The CSTD framework is recognized as the “gold standard” body of knowledge for learning and development professionals in Canada.

These competencies also allow learners to apply ideas and tools in various stages of adult learning practice with a specific focus on the areas listed above.

This partnership will help us ensure that the fundamentals of teaching and learning are available to our staff, and support Sunnybrook’s strategic goal of leading the development of innovative methods of teaching and learning.

The Learn to Teach Educator Resources Portal provides 24/7 online access to Sunnybrook educators and is accessible to all staff. The portal provides educators with learning content, information and tools and is outlined within the five educator competencies:

Assessing Learning Needs

Designing FacilitatingSupporting Transfer of Learning

Evaluating

Next steps

• We will begin the 12-month process of certification for all 30 applicants in 2015/2016.

• We will continue to develop and promote our Learn to Teach Educator Resources Portal to reach more of our Sunnybrook family.

• We will support our 30 Sunnybrook staff to help them achieve either a Certified Training Practitioner or Certified Training and Development Professional designation beginning in the fall of 2015.

• We will deliver two complete Educator Development Workshop series to any staff member who wishes to enhance their training and learning skills.

I was able to attend three pilot educator development workshops. All three workshops not only provided me with new tools, but also inspired me to learn more about how I can enhance my current practice as a formal educator for nursing staff and interprofessional team members.

STUDENT EXPERIENCEThe Student Experience Committee is dedicated to enhancing the experience of learners at Sunnybrook. We monitor the feedback we receive through our Student Experience Survey and identify opportunities for improvement.

At Sunnybrook, we listen to the student voice. Based on ongoing feedback from our students, we designed a special Transportation Survey and used the results to advocate and secure extended hours for the Sunnybrook shuttle service for students travelling to Women’s College Hospital via the Holland Orthopaedic & Arthritic Centre.

This year, we will continue to monitor the feedback from students and use this to make strategic improvements. For example, going forward, one area of focus will involve

Student Experience Committee Co-Chairs Elizabeth McLaney (left) and Sinthujah Santhirasiri

students and trainees in choosing food services that are nutritious and affordable.

The committee has also developed a Student Experience Survey communication plan to share feedback with key stakeholders. Highlights from the survey are shown on the right.

Since 2012, we have been celebrating our more than 4,000 learners across 25 health professions at our Annual Learner Appreciation Day during Education Week in October. This year, we will be launching a second Annual Appreciation Event in the 2016 calendar year. Sunnybrook is proud to be one of Canada’s largest teaching hospitals and we recognize all of our interprofessional learners.

Sunnybrook Shuttle Service

48% of learners use the shuttle service

75% of learners leave Sunnybrook after 5:30 p.m.

51% of learners are likely to use the shuttle service if an earlier service was available

students SPOKE. we LISTENED.When students told us the shuttle hours didn’t always fit their needs—they often start their days early and leave late—we listened.

Our first shuttle now leaves downtown at 6:00 a.m. Our last shuttle now leaves Bayview at 7:00 p.m. And, because TTC subway service doesn’t start until 9:00 a.m. on Sundays but students are often on-call, we now operate a Sunday morning shuttle starting at 7:30 a.m.

Sunnybrook education advisory council

At Sunnybrook, education matters! As part of this ongoing commitment, the Sunnybrook Education Advisory Council (SEAC) was formed in 2010 to provide a forum for leaders across all health professions at Sunnybrook to drive education strategic planning and implementation.

The council is helmed by the Vice President, Education and comprises the four committees detailed in this report, along with students and patients.

Members of SEAC attend a meeting.

Fatima da Costa is the SEAC Coordinator.
