In September we celebrated the first anniversary of the opening of our Family Center. This warm, welcoming building was the realization of a dream for children and families in Colorado. It was a major accomplishment and we now look forward to new, exciting challenges and opportunities.

Most of you are aware that our former Executive Director, Jo Blum, is a cancer survivor and stepped down from her position this past September. Jo is healthy and strong and eager to continue her commitment to Families First as the Director of Major Gifts. During Jo’s five year battle with cancer, my role has been to assume her duties as the Executive Director in her absence. Today, I am pleased to be following Jo’s example and assume this role on a permanent basis.

Our programs continue to grow to meet the needs of Colorado’s families. The Children’s Treatment Center is home to nine active children thriving in the safe environment created by our staff. With a small population, each child is given individualized treatment focused on their needs. The goal is make the Treatment Center their last placement and a strong emphasis is put on transitioning our kids to permanent placements.

The Family Support Services now have a “home” at the Family Center. We’ve found that parents, neighbors and passersby feel comforted by the surroundings of the Center. Our Family Support Line, weekly support groups, parent education classes and seminars continue to provide valuable information for caregivers in the important job of caring for their children.

Each of us has a role in providing safety for Colorado’s children. I am counting on your support to help Families First continue to provide high quality care and treatment for children and families - our future depends on it.

Parent Education Classes• 30 parent education classes, 8 topic specific

seminars including two in Spanish and 2 massage instruction classes and demonstrations were held. In addition, 46 scholarships were given to parents in need.

• 398 parents learned new parenting tools in parenting classes and seminars.

• 30 parents learned the importance of parent-child attachment and establishing boundaries through massage instruction techniques.

The Children’s GroupWhile their parents attended our groups and classes, 135 children attended our Children’s Program. They participated in activities that were fun and increased their confidence. This program provides an additional incentive for parents by offering a safe, educational place for their children.

Parent Education Classes

Circle of Parents® is the National Network of Mutual Support and Self-Help Programs in Partnership with Communities, a collaborative project of Prevent Child Abuse America and the National Family Support Roundtable.

• 13 groups met weekly where parents and caregivers found fellowship, support and encouragement in the difficult job of parenting. Specialized groups were held for Active Dads, Single Mothers, and Parents of Preschoolers. Seven other groups were open to anyone in a parenting role , three groups were held at Early Childhood Education programs and one in Fort Collins.

• 202 parents and caregivers attended Circle of Parents® Groups.

In 2007:• 4047 parents and professionals called for information, referrals or a listening ear. • Consejos Para Familias intent is to bridge the educational achievement gap by enlisting the active participation of Latino parents. Last year we received 449 calls. Consejos para Familias is a statewide resource for parents and professionals.• We make monthly follow-up calls to determine if the caller found the call useful or helpful. In follow-up evaluation calls:

90% found the Support Line worker helpful and knowledgeable. 87% found the information helpful. 71% found the referrals appropriate to their needs. 60% reported a meaningful change in their situation.

Callers to the Family Support Line get answers and help for the struggles they face today in the challenging job of raising their children. Callers are directed to appropriate services throughout the state.

The Children’s Treatment Center provides a therapeutic community for young children, like Kirra, struggling with the emotional trauma of abuse and neglect suffered in their homes. This community is modeled on healthy family living and provides a unique opportunity for children to recover from their trauma and for families to develop healthy interactions.

Eleven children were treated at The Children’s Treatment Center this year. These children received:• Over 150 group therapy sessions. • 970 individual and family therapy sessions.• 2946 individual days of care, treatment and support.• Of the 11 children served, one went to long-term foster care, one was adopted, two are in transition to adoptive homes and one went to more restrictive residential care.

The Children’s Treatment Center exists as a partnership of treatment staff, children, parents, caseworkers, schools, community providers and volunteers where every interaction is an opportunity for healthy change.

Children’s Treatment Center

Thirteen is a small number for songs on the ipod, and a pleasant abundance of Girl Scout cookies in the freezer. But it was frightening to learn that Kirra, still in kindergarten, had been in 13 placements already. We promised ourselves Families First would be her last temporary stop.

Kirra was with us at the Children’s Treatment Center for almost two years. It took time, patience, learning to trust and courage for Kirra to say yes to a family relationship, but the day finally came. Kirra left Families First to be with an adoptive mother who worked hard to earn Kirra’s trust and provide a safe place for her. It was Kirra’s 14th move, and her last. Kirra was finally going home for the first time.

Volunteers are an integral part of our organization. They provide direct care to abused and neglected children, provide information and referral sources to callers through our Family Support Line, and help plan and implement children’s activities for our Children’s Groups. Last year 49 program volunteers contributed over 3,732 hours of direct services to the children and families involved in our family of services.

This year, FRIENDS recruited 303 members and raised $249,387 through special events. Thanks to the 100 active FRIENDS members who contributed over 2,139 hours of their time organizing the fundraisers, soliciting donations, and making the children feel special during the holidays, their birthdays and all the times in between.

Friends For Families First is a special group of supporters who embrace the vision of creating a community that welcomes the responsibility to nurture children and strengthen families. Our FRIENDS help the Governing Board and staff accomplish our mission by recruiting volunteers, raising funds and promoting awareness in the community.
