ANNUALREPORT
FROM OUR CHAIR & CEO Dear friends,
We are happy to share with you Artscape’s annual report for 2016. It was a year of
tremendous momentum and change for us with abundant activity happening in our existing
projects and construction beginning on four new ones. Over $4.2 million in combined savings
on occupancy costs and event rentals for Artscape tenants, owners and clients were
generated through our properties. Additionally, at least half a million (457,600) people came
through our doors to attend events and activities.
In addition to our regular activities, Artscape embarked on two special projects. The first was a collaboration with the United Nations and more than 20 local partners to build empathy and support for refugees and resettlement through The Sidra Project. The second involved helping to incubate an extraordinary creative placemaking project called, The Bentway, which has the potential to do for Toronto what the High Line has done for New York.
As you peruse the highlights of our projects, programs, exhibitions and events profiled in this report, you should know that virtually all of them have happened through partnership and collaboration. Our work at Artscape happens at the intersection of arts, culture, activism, urban development, philanthropy and public policy. We would like to thank our many tenants, owners, clients, participants, funders, partners, donors, volunteers, public servants and neighbours who helped make 2016 another terrific year for Artscape. Our collective efforts are helping to keep art at the centre of city-building in Toronto.

EVENTS & EXHIBITIONSUNFORGETTABLE COMMUNITY-DRIVEN EVENTS In a year of notable Artscape community-driven events, some were unforgettable. The tenant organizations of Daniels Spectrum presented the 3rd Spectrum Collective Summer Arts Lab, engaging 27 youth aged 10 to 17 in a one-week multidisciplinary camp.
The Wee Festival from Theatre Direct, the new Pop-Up at the Barns and the weekly Farmers’ Market of The Stop Community Food Centre were ever-popular attractions to the Artscape Wychwood Barns, as was a March event that crowded the hub with children participating in performances, parades and camps offered by tenants.
We welcomed new visitors during Doors Open Toronto 2016 with the Artscape Wychwood Barns and Daniels Spectrum, where we teamed up with Regent Park photographer Yasin Osman on tours.
Big occasions at Artscape Youngplace were full-facility events including Nuit Rose, Nuit Blanche, the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival and our own RECESS and Art of Darkness Community Open Houses.
ART GALLERIES ACROSS ARTSCAPE There are many galleries within the Artscape portfolio, from dedicated spaces Koffler Centre of the Arts, Propeller artist-run centre and Gallery 1313, to smaller display spaces and pop-ups in tenant spaces at Artscape West Queen West, the Artscape Distillery Studios, Artscape Gibraltar Point, Artscape Younglace and other facilities. The Peter MacKendrick Community Gallery is an intimate community space at the Artscape Wychwood Barns. In 2016, our Hallway Galleries at Daniels Spectrum and Artscape Youngplace presented shows representing 263 artists including artist Meera Sethi, whose artwork was purchased by the Royal Ontario Museum during her Upping the Aunty show at Daniels Spectrum.

EVENTS THAT GIVE BACK In 2016, our Performance and Event Venues team worked with over 500 clients to present thousands of fantastic events and exhibitions through our social enterprise performance and event venues business that helps support the Artscape portfolio.
The Artscape Wychwood Barns hosted dozens of popular annual events and welcomed attendees of multiple large-scale fundraisers hosted by prominent charities and non-profits. Artscape Gibraltar Point was booked solid with private ceremonies, conferences, movie nights, festivals and retreats.
Daniels Spectrum was characteristically busy with gatherings, performances and special presentations, from Rebels and Rascals to the Pride Toronto Post-Festival Townhall to the 11th Annual Fashion Art Toronto week-long show.
Artscape Sandbox capped its first full year of operations in October. And what a year it was! Our newest venue hosted an incredible array of presenting organizations and was an official site for multiple festivals. We were also proud to have our venues selected as the site for several high-profile meetings and special announcements by multiple levels of government.

PROGRAMSARTIST RESIDENCIESIn 2016 our island retreat Artscape Gibraltar Point hosted 647 artists in residence and returning islander artist collective The Fake Art School. Brightening our darkest season, Artscape presented Winter Island, a residency series that also involved talks, dinners and performances by some of Toronto’s most celebrated artists, including Jim Monroe, Andrew Harwood and Yuula Benivolski.
ENTREPRENEURSHIP We continued to offer our Launchpad programs for artists and designers planning, launching and running their own businesses, including workshops with guest facilitators and our signature offerings, the Creative Business Design Workshop and Creative Entrepreneurship Program.
YOUTH AND COMMUNITY ARTS The fourth Ada Slaight Youth Arts Mentorship Program at Daniels Spectrum launched with the most applicants to date. The final showcase, Unified, displayed phenomenal young talent following six months of hard work and mentorship. Summer Series at Daniels Spectrum was a smash hit again with creative workshops, block parties, bubble soccer and much more. We also launched The Journey Academy, a one-week intensive in music, dance and acting for local area youth, and welcomed our first
artist in residence: researcher, visual artist, activist and educator Syrus Marcus Ware.
At Artscape Youngplace, seven recipients of the Artscape Youngplace Community Fund presented accessible arts programming ranging from creative movement for young people to networking for newcomers involved in the arts.
THE JOURNEY STUDIO Artscape has mounted with its partners several performances of The Journey, a spirited musical based on the story of three young people living in the Regent Park neighbourhood. This year, Artscape was pleased to expand this project to include an arts mentorship component for youth in Regent Park and surrounding area, The Journey Studio.

SPECIAL PROJECTS
Artscape, The United Nations and more than 20 other partners created The Sidra Project in 2016 to respond to the global refugee crisis. The concept behind The Sidra Project was simple: build empathy for refugees and spark engagement in resettlement efforts at the community level through leveraging the power of an immersive virtual reality experience named Clouds Over Sidra.
Created by Gabo Arora, Senior Creative Advisor to the United Nations, Clouds Over Sidra tells the story of Sidra, a 12-year old girl living in the Zaatari refugee camp of Jordan. Artscape brought together over 20 partners to deliver screenings to over 7,000 people. The project travelled to boardrooms, classrooms, public venues and people’s homes. After each screening, participants were given a menu of options they could use to help with local resettlement efforts.
With this project, we learned a new way that art can be a catalyst for change. The Sidra Project proved effective in battling fear and apathy toward refugees. Artscape CEO, Tim Jones presented these results with Gabo Arora at Meet the Media Guru in Milan in February 2017.
Project Partners: CivicAction, COSTI Immigrant Services, DMZ at Ryerson University, Dubarah, Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, Institute for Canadian Citizenship and 6 Degrees, Lifeline Syria, National Arts Centre, NATIONAL
Public Relations, Refugee 613, Toronto Foundation, U.S. Consulate General Toronto.
The Bentway (thebentway.ca) is an exciting new project supported by The City of Toronto with Waterfront Toronto and kick-started by a generous gift from prominent city-builders Judy and Wilmot Matthews. A 1.75-kilometre trail and series of public spaces located underneath the city’s iconic Gardiner Expressway, The Bentway will be a new civic and cultural space and attraction for Toronto residents and visitors that aims to do for the city what the High Line does for New York City.
The partners involved in The Bentway project hired Artscape starting in June 2016 for an 18-month engagement to incubate The Bentway Conservancy, a new non-profit organization set up to manage, operate and program The Bentway. Through our Creative Placemaking Lab, Artscape delivered planning, project management and operational support, contributing to the Bentway’s staffing and successful start-up.
Artscape released a Request for Expressions of Interest (REOI) related to The Bentway in October 2016, inviting arts, culture and creative organizations to propose ideas to animate the future Bentway. The call was hugely successful, resulting in a number of viable potential partnerships and projects.
The Bentway is made possible by a range of city-builders and experts, including: the City of Toronto; Waterfront Toronto; Judy and Wilmot Matthews Foundation; Ken Greenberg Consultants; PUBLIC WORK; Fort York National Historic Site; and Artscape.

PROJECTS IN DEVELOPMENT
Artscape Daniels Launchpad is a brilliant response to a major gap in the entrepreneurial infrastructure of the Toronto region.” – MERIC GERTLER,
PRESIDENT, UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO
Artscape Daniels Launchpad is a full-service entrepreneurship hub for artists and designers set to open in the Fall of 2018. This first-of-its-kind project recognizes the struggle to sustain a career as an artist, and brings together multiple strategies to help creatives thrive. It will provide affordable access to space, technology and tools of the trade; build a new culture around entrepreneurship for creative people that aligns with their values and aspirations; and become the go-to place to plug into programs, services, funding, collaboration, mentorship and business opportunities.
Our transition to operations includes developing Launchpad’s programming, membership model and partnerships, and articulating our facility management plans and priorities in branding, marketing and communications.
Launchpad programs have been underway since 2014. The Creative Entrepreneurship Program is an A-to-Z primer on business planning and management for creative businesses, and is Artscape’s newest signature offering.
Launchpad programming is supported by: FedDev Ontario; the Ontario Trillium Foundation; Ontario Media Development Corporation; the City of Toronto through Start Up Here Toronto; the Metcalf Foundation; and the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation.
PARTNERSDevelopment: The Daniels CorporationInterior Design: Quadrangle Architect: RAW Design, Rafael + Bigauskas ArchitectsArtscape Daniels Launchpad is named in recognition of the outstanding financial support of The Daniels Corporation and the John and Myrna Daniels Foundation, whose leadership gift of $5.75 million includes a gift of $625,000 made by ‘City of the Arts’ development partner WJ Properties.

ARTSCAPE HUB AT WESTON COMMON This project, a community cultural hub for Weston, is our first project outside Toronto’s downtown core. Feedback from community members tells us this hub is vitally needed. Artscape Hub is a major feature of Weston Common, a project of The Rockport Group, that will help to revitalize this underserved neighbourhood. Weston Common was recognized as Best New Community (Planned) at the 2017 BILD Awards.
To date, we have been hard at work developing the project’s model and vision, working alongside local residents and community groups, sharing information via our website, newsletter and over 50 local gatherings.
After completing a consultation process that involved the creation of a Community Steering Committee and a community survey, we were pleased to share the foundational vision for the hub in January 2017. We will be announcing our program partners in early 2018.
PARTNERSDevelopment Partners: City of Toronto, The Rockport Group together with Woodbourne Capital Management

Developing Weston’s first and only community cultural hub
This is an amazing opportunity to revitalize Weston. I believe the arts is a keystone to this change…I feel that if more artists come to Weston and see the potential, that they may aid in the continued revitalization of Weston as a whole.” – WESTON RESIDENT
Located in the East Bayfront District, this collection of 80 rental units is situated within a larger condo development built to LEED™ Gold standards. The Artscape Bayside Lofts are designated for artists and their families for as long as the units exist.
PARTNERSDevelopment: City of Toronto, Hines Management Company, Tridel Corporation, Waterfront Toronto
Design: Arquitectonica
Artscape Lofts at Waterworks are collection of 15 housing units for artists and their families within an innovative mixed-use development that revitalizes an historic building in downtown Toronto. The development will include 299 housing units in total, plus a new YMCA, a public food hall, a space for community organization Eva’s Initiatives for Homeless Youth and more.
PARTNERSDevelopment: Build Toronto, City of Toronto, MOD Developments, Woodcliffe Landmark Properties

ARTSCAPE BAYSIDE LOFTS ARTSCAPE LOFTS AT WATERWORKS
If you’re going to build a community, social
infrastructure is critical, particularly if you want
families to live downtown...This is what city
building is all about.” – COUNCILLOR JOE CRESSY, WARD 20 TRINITY-SPADINA
Hines and Tridel are pleased to have Artscape
on board. Understanding the need for affordable
housing, we think we have achieved a building
design that benefits all future residents of the
Bayside community, both owners and renters.” – LEO DELZOTTO, PRESIDENT OF TRIDEL
Expanding our affordable housing options for artists and artist-led familiesArtscape’s role in these projects is to operate affordable rental housing units within the greater development—80 within Bayside and 15 within Waterworks. With affordable housing in short supply in the GTHA, these units will provide much-needed support to the artistic community.

Employment Partnerships & Student Placements
Artscape engages in employment partnerships with the City of Toronto’s Employment & Social Services, Ontario Works and YMCA’s Youth Eco Internship Program.
Always a supporter and encouraging development opportunities, we have been pleased to host various student placement programs from widely recognized post-secondary institutions across Ontario over the past seven months: OCADU’s Experiential Learning Placements Program, Humber Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning’s Arts Administration & Cultural Management Program, Ryerson University’s School of Creative Industries Program, University of Waterloo’s Masters in Economic Development & Innovation Program, Western University’s Non-profit Arts Management Continuing Studies Program.
We extend our best wishes to the following students as they develop their careers in arts, culture and city-building: Emma Boyton, Darcie Hagan, Abby Ho, Amanda Lewis, Elaina Pawelka, Colin Richards and Teya Zuzek.
We look forward to continuing partnerships with educational institutions and programs throughout the city. 21 | | 20
Artscape Operating StatementsArtscape operates as three legal entities, Toronto Artscape Inc., Artscape Non-Profit Homes Inc. and Toronto Artscape Foundation. In 2016, Artscape achieved modest surpluses in all its entities while maintaining affordability and accessibility across its properties and advancing three major projects.
All Artscape properties are operated with the objective to be financially self-sustaining once the initial capital investment has been made. Support from the City of Toronto’s Major Cultural Organizations Operating Grant represents less than 4% of Toronto Artscape Inc.’s total revenue. Below-market rents, memberships and user fees comprise the majority of the revenue sources. Grants and subsidies are leveraged to maintain affordability and accessibility for tenants and community-based organizations.
Artscape Non-Profit Homes Inc. administers social housing subsidized through the Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing program and the Affordable Housing Office of the City of Toronto.
Philanthropic gifts help to support charitable programming such as youth arts mentorship and internship programs operated by the Toronto Artscape Foundation.
